Lena and the kids made it back to the hospital on time. As soon as they got to the 3rd floor, they made their way to Callie's room. Right before they all walked through the door, Lena peaked in. What she saw was heartwarming. Stef was in bed asleep with Callie passed out on her chest. She turned around and looked at her kids and told them to be quiet. They all made it into the room and Lena went straight to the bed to wake her wife. "Stef, honey? I'm back." Lena said quietly. She didn't want to wake up her daughter.
Stef opened her eyes and looked a little disoriented. She looked down at Callie and saw that she was still sleeping, then she looked at her wife. "Oh, hey love, you're back already? Hi babies. How was school?" Stef whispered.
The kids all waved at their mom and started to settle around the room. Jude looked a little desperate to get to Callie but he noticed she was sleeping so he let he be.
"Stef, it's almost 2pm. I'm here with the kids. And I brought Callie's lunch. Should we wake her up?" Lena looked at their daughter and she wasn't sure she wanted to wake her up. She had bags under her eyes and looked so peaceful. But she knew that she had to eat and this was what she wanted.
"Yeah let's wake her up. She needs to eat something substantial. All she's had today is a doughnut." Stef said while trying to move from under Callie while waking her up quietly. "Cal?" Stef tried to wake up the girl gently. "Hey Cal. It's time to wake up. Mama's here. Can you open your eyes for me? I want to see those beautiful eyes." Callie started to stir but didn't open her eyes. "Come on Bug. Can you wake up for me?" She started to lightly shake the teen to try and waker her without stattleing her. Callie?
At the shaking Callie started to wake up. She moved around in her bed and accidentally bumped into Stef while trying to stretch and yawn. "Oh, sorry mom. I didn't mean to kick you." She said groggily.
Lena makes her way to Callie's bed and gives her daughter a kiss. "Hey Cal. I have your lunch with me. Are you still hungry?" Lena asks her daughter while she starts to pull out Callie's food and set it up on the tray.
"Yeah. Actually I am." She said while trying to sit up in her bed. She was then able to get a good look around the room and noticed all her siblings were there. Jude looked about to burst if he wasn't able to get to her soon. She went ahead and signaled him to come closer and then greeted her siblings. "Hey guys!" She said as Jude made his way to her bed and sat down next to her.
"Hey Callie how are you doing?" Mariana asked. She made her way over to Callie as well and gave her a hug.
"Hey." Brandon and Jesus said together from the end of the bed.
"How are you feeling?" Jude asked her quietly.
"I'm fine. I just had a physical done today and so far everything is good. We are just waiting for my blood test to come back. Right mom?" Callie said with a smile.
"Yeah guys." Stef said. "Your sister is doing a lot better. And if she keeps improving she will be home on Thursday when you get back from school." Stef said while moving the bed tray towards Callie so she could eat.
"Really?" Jude asked excited.
"Yeah baby. I'll be home soon. Don't worry." Callie answered for the moms.
"That's great because I really miss you. The room is so lonely and empty without you." Mariana said.
"Ok, come on you four. It's time for the allergy test." Lena said to the others. When she saw that they started to gather close to the door, she looked over to Callie. "Cal I'm going to go with the others to their appointment, I'll be right back. Your mom is going to stay with you and when were done we will all eat dinner."
"How long is the test supposed to last?" Callie asked while she ate her lunch. She dipped her sandwich in her soup and took a bite. She closed her eyes and hummed at the flavor.
"Good?" Stef asked smiling
"Mhm! Thanks mama. It's really good." Callie said smiling.
"Better than hospital food?" Lena asked smiling.
"Way better." Callie said taking another bite of her food.
"Well if you eat it all, the icecream is in a bag in the kitchen freezer." Lena said. "But only if you eat it all. You haven't been eating enough lately."
"Ok I'll try to eat it all." Callie said. Truth was that her throat had been hurting and it bothered her to swallow any kind of hard food.
"Ok well let's go kids." Lena made her way to the door and
"Bye Callie." all the kids said
"Later." Callie said waving at her siblings.
"See you in a little bit"
"Bye guys, I hope everything comes out great and that none of you have allergies like me." Callie said quietly.
"Bye Callie." Jude said giving her a hug.
"Come on, finish eating. I'm going to put on a movie and we can watch it while you finish your food." Stef started setting up the laptop for a movie while Lena left the room with the kids
"Ok." Callie waved at Lena as she closed the door and then made space for Stef on the bed next to her.
Lena started for the elevators. The kids were all very nervous and quiet, once the elevator opened and every one was in she pressed the number 3 on the panel. "Don't worry guys, everything is going to be alright. There is nothing to worry about. Everything is going to be fine guys. Don't worry." She then put her arm around Marianna and Jude's shoulders. As soon as the doors opened, she moved over to the nurses station to talk to a nurse. "Excuse me, do you know where the allergy tests are performed? All of my kids have an appointment to get allergy tests done today. The doctor just told me to bring them here."
"Oh, um... yes which doctor was it?" The nurse asked.
"Dr. Leslie Carlson. She made the appointment but, I have 4 kids that are having this test done and she said she would take care of the details." Lena responded. She wish she knew more of the info to give to the nurse, but with everything that has been happening she didn't.
"Oh, yes, of course. I talked to Dr. Carlson. Her and one of the other allergists are going to be administering the test. Please just take a seat until we call the children to the back." The nurse pointed to the waiting area.
"Thank you." Lena said to the nurse. Then she turned to the kids. "Ok guys let's sit down. And maybe you can all start your homework. It looks like we're going to be here a while. She watched as all the kids sat in a circle and started pulling out there homework. She sat nearby keeping watch in case any of them needed help." they all made their way to the chairs and started to pull out homework.
After about 15 minutes, she was in the middle of helping Jude with some math work, when a nurse came out and called all of them to the back. All the kids packed up all their stuff and followed the nurse to 2 different rooms. They had the twins in one and Jude and Brandon in another. She explained the process and had them all change into gowns, then left the room after telling them that two techs would be on shortly to administer the tests. Lena spent the whole time going back and forth between rooms and distracting the kids when needed.
After about 20 minutes she was called into the twins room so the doctor could get with her about the results. When she entered both kids were already dressed and Leslie was there with another doctor.
"So Jesus and Mariana Adams Foster." the doctor read off the chart. "Well It looks like you two are good. All we have are very slight allergies to common dust and pollen but not anything that would cause any troubles."
"And if they did any over the counter medication should suffice." Leslie finished.
"So we aren't allergic to anything?" Jesus asked.
"Well not any of the normal basic allergens. Have you guys experienced any reactions to anything?" Leslie answered.
"Not that we know of." Mariana said.
The doctor then looked at Lena. "How about you? Have you noticed anything?"
"Not since they have been in our care, no. And they have eaten nuts and citrus, berries and wheat, gluten and eggs. They also have contact with the outside everyday. They help with the yard work and at least Jesus has been stung by bees. Lena commented.
"Ok, then how about animals?" the doctor asked.
"We don't have pets."
"Oh, but I have been in contact with cats and dogs before. My friends have pets." Jesus said.
"Me too." Mariana said nodding.
"Ok then I think you both are good to go. The only thing that you guys really reacted to was the controlled histamine injection to make sure that the test was conducted correctly. If you have any kind of itchiness just rubbing some lotion after a shower should be enough." Leslie said, then left the room.
"Ok well kids looks like you are both in the clear." Lena said to the twins as they made their way out of the exam room. "See it wasn't so bad."
"No it wasn't. It didn't really bother me." Mariana said. "And the book I was reading was interesting enough to keep me distracted."
"Yeah." Jesus said too. "I spent the whole time listening to music."
"Well why don't you two go ahead to the waiting room while I go to Jude and Brandon's room?" Lena said when they were in the hallway. "We will meet you both there."
"Can we go to Callie's room?" Mariana asked.
Lena thought about it for a minute. "Text mom. If she says yes, then go ahead and let me know."
"Ok, thanks mama. See you in a few." Mariana said smiling. She then grabbed Jesus arm and dragged him to the waiting room so she could test Stef.
Lena went over to the door where Brandon and Jude were and knocked before entering the room. When she walked both boys were still laying on their stomachs. "Has the nurse been in here to check on you guys?"
"Yeah, she looked at our backs, I guess measured something and took notes. Then she said she had to get some stuff that she would be right back." Brandon answered her.
"Did she measure you both or just one?" Lena said while looking at the boys back. She noticed that Jude had a few big welts on his back. Some bigger than others and Brandon had about 3, but they weren't as big as the ones on Jude.
"Both" Jude said squirming a bit.
"Does it itch?" Lena asked him
"Yeah kinda." Jude said squirming some more. "it felt like she poked me more than Brandon though."
"Really?" Lena asked concerned.
"Yeah mama she kinda did." Brandon agreed with Jude. The nurse only did one tray of needles on him, but he saw two for Jude. He just didn't want to scare him.
"She put some kind of cream or gel on our backs before she left. I can barely feel the itchiness anymore." Brandon told her. She wanted to know what they gave them for the itchiness. It would be a good idea to have some in the house.
Just then the nurse came back in the room with a tray. "Hello I'm here for round two with…" She looked as her papers. "Jude?"
"Yes, this is Jude right here." Lena said while holing her youngest sons hand.
"Alright how about you come over to this chair and put your arm right here." She motioned to the chair that was by a desk. "This test is a few more allergens we want to test on you. This is to cover all the bases."
"How do you test these?" Lena asked.
"These we inject directly under the skin. These are none normal allergens. We already tested those on his back. These are more rare. They include insects and foods." The Nurse explained. She took the cloth she had covering the tray and lena noticed that there was an Epi-pen on it.
So what's the epic-pen for?
Oh that? Well since his sister has two severe allergies, we wanted to be prepared just in case.
At that Jude paled considerably. Lena gave him a little squeeze on his thigh. She wanted to make sure he knew he wasn't alone.
So it's just in case then. So far nothing has reacted to that extent?
No not yet. But that's something the doctor will discuss with you guys later. She started by cleaning the area on Judes arm that she was going to work with with rubbing alcohol. Then she, one by one started to inject the allergens into his skin. She kept an eye out for severe reactions and stuff like that.
Jude was nervous. He didn't want to have an allergy like his sister. It was scary. But he knew that the bee one was going to react. Maybe not as bad as Callie, but it will definitely react.
"Are any of these bee's?" Jude asked.
"Yes I have bees, ants, mosquitos and shell fish, eggs, bananas. Then I also have some medications like penicillin and codeine." The nurse said as she worked.
"Ok. Well, let's wait and see what happens." Lena said. She squeezed her sons hand again. Do you still need Brandon? Or can he go wait with my wife?" She watched as the nurse finished injecting Jude with all the syringes.
"The doctor still has to see the results of his test and discuss them with you." The nurse said as she started to pack up all her supplies. "Would you like me to talk to her and see if she will discuss them with you while we wait on Jude's test to finish?"
"Sure that would be great." Lena said smiling.
"Ok I'll be right back. Keep an eye on him for me and if something happens while I'm gone just call out for help in the hall way." She didn't want to leave but she knew she wouldn't be gone long. She picked up all of her stuff and after receiving an affirmative from the mother she excused herself.
"How are the twins?" Jude asked to try to distract himself.
"Good." Lena said to him. "They already finished. I sent them out to wait for us." At that moment her phone chimed. When she looked at it she saw a text from Mariana that they were with Stef in Callie's room. "Well it looks like the twins are with Callie and mom. So as soon as you two are done, we will make our way there."
"Hey mama?" Jude said hesitantly.
"Yeah bub?" Lena said looking at him.
"Is Callie really going to be ok?" Jude asked. "And is this the test Callie has to take later?"
"Yes. this is the same test Callie has to take later, but hers is going to be a little more in depth." Lena said. Then she stood up and looked at her son in the eyes. "And you saw her a little while ago. How did she seem to you?"
"She looked better." Jude said worriedly..
"She is better. The type of allergic reaction that Callie had is very dangerous." Lena said carefully. She didn't want to scare him but he needed to understand the condition of his sister. "I'm not going to lie to you. She could die if it goes untreated. But we are going to do everything in our power to make sure she doesn't have anymore. And if by any chance she does, we are going to make sure it gets treated on time. I know it's scary but we can't live in fear. We have to move on with our lives. Yes, Callie is going to have to make some lifestyle changes but it won't be anything that should affect all of you to much. And she is going to be ok." Lena said and gave him a squeeze on his hand.
"What kind of changes?" This question came from Brandon. He was a little worried that this would change a lot of their summer plans. They always did stuff for the summer. Camping, the beach, the lake and stuff like that. He really didn't want that to change but if it did he knew the twins would be more upset than he would.
"Well, like we told you all at home the first time we came back from the hospital." Lena said carefully. "She has to carry her medication with her everywhere. And me and mama are going to keep one with us at all times too. I'm going to leave one with the school nurse, just in case. She will probably have to take a little bit of medicine every day like Jesus does. And wear a medical alert bracelet. But beside that not much will change." Jude was nodding his head. She knew that he was scared for his sister and thought that she might be mad because he told them about everything else. "You know she's not mad at you right?"
He just nodded but didn't make eye contact with her. "Jude honey, look at me." She said as she lifted his head with her finger on his chin. "She's not mad. If she were mad do you think that she would have just hugged you like she did?" Jude just shrugged. "Everything is going to be ok. You need to stop worrying about things you can't control, that's our jobs as moms. And if you and Callie do all the worrying what are mom and I going to do? Huh?" She said trying to lighten the conversation.
At that moment there was a knock on the door and the two doctors came in. "Hello everybody!" Dr. Carlson said. "We come bearing results. So how are you guys feeling? Did the itchiness go away Brandon?"
"Yeah it did." Brandon said. He just wanted to be done with this.
"My arm is starting to itch really bad." Jude said while looking at his arm. "But my back is better."
"The boys said that the nurse put some kind of gel on their backs?" Lena asked the doctors. "I would like to know where I can buy it."
"Oh that's just a benadryl gel that we have." Leslie said. "You can buy it anywhere."
"Oh good, I will probably stop by the store and buy some today then." Lena said making a mental note of the brand.
"Ok, well then we already talked about the twins. Let talk about Brandon." The doctor pulled out a chart and started to read all the information. "He has a dust mite allergy, it's not life threatening, obviously, but it's there.
"So what can happen and what do we have to do?" Lena asked. She hadn't seen Brandon ever have any kind of trouble. So she felt unprepared.
"It can cause some reaction. Probably sneezing, watery eyes and itchiness." Dr. Carlson started to type in her computer everything she was saying so that when they got there summaries at the end they would have all the information they needed. "Now I'm assuming that you don't have dust mites in your home because he hasn't been having any kind of reaction, but on the off chance that he does, we recommend that carpets be removed, air purifier in his room at least and allergen protection bed covers. They sell them for mattresses and pillows. Aside from that, same as the twins. If his allergy becomes troublesome even after making all the changes. Then we can talk about adding an antihistamine, but that is a last resort kind of thing." She finished.
At this Brandon spoke up. "Wait, so for me it's a last resort kind of thing, but Callie has to have it?"
The doctor sighed. "Callie's situation is different from yours. Where you might sneeze, she has severe reactions, besides, we haven't performed this test on her yet and the one we will perform is going to be a lot more extensive. Plus so far the only things Callie needs to be using that injection for is bee's and penicillin. Aside from that she would do the same thing as you."
"Oh I get it. So because of the way Callie reacts to stuff she has to take medicine and carry that injection with her all the time, but if it's not the bad reaction, like sneezing and stuff then it would be the same as us." Jude said understanding what the doctor said thanks to Lenas explanation.
"That's right. But it doesn't mean that she's going to be sick all the time. As long as she's careful she should be just like always." The doctor finished. She then started to look at Judes arm.
"Callie likes to take pictures of nature. Will she be able to keep doing that?" Jude asked. He wanted to know if his sister was going to be able to do all the stuff that she likes to do.
The doctor smiled at the question. It always amazed her how much these two looked out for each other. It was heart warming. Even though they have been adopted for a while now they still had a special bond. "I don't see why not, as long as she's careful. And for now I wouldn't recommend her going alone. Not until she gets used to carrying around the Epi-Pen and she wears the medical ID bracelet." She pulled out the measuring tool and started to measure the reaction that was starting to show on Judes arm.
The boys nodded and since no other questions were asked she took it as her cue to continue. "Now with Jude we are doing a more extensive test than with the other three. Since we know that biologically he has a certain disposition to allergies, we tested for more things. His test is similar to the one Callie is going to have."
"I don't know if she's going to let you inject her in the arm like me… she's scared of needles, you know." Jude wanted to make sure that they knew Callie wasn't going to let them. She really didn't like needles.
"Yes, I am fully aware of your sisters needle phobia. Don't worry we will help her and make sure she is as calm and comfortable as possible." She said smiling. She has had to battle with Callie multiple times in the past couple of years since Callie moved in with the Fosters. "Plus at least one if not both of your moms will be with her during the whole thing."
"Can I be with her too?" Jude said and tried to scratch his arm. It was really starting to itch.
"Sweetie you will probably be in school when she has her test." She noticed him squirming and saw his arm move toward his forearm where the test was being done and she caught his hand. "Does it itch?"
"Yeah it's really starting to itch bad." Jude scrunched up his face trying hard to resist scratching.
Let me see. The doctor said. "Ah, look!" She said pointing to some little red spots on his arm. "You're showing reactions to some stuff."
"Like what?" Lena asked looking.
"Well, looks like the penicillin, and codeine so far." The doctor said while looking at his arm and the list of allergens they injected. "But it looks like the bee one is going to react. You can see that its starting to get red and its raising. I don't see any of the foods reacting."
"So he's allergic to penicillin too? And codeine?" Lena just realized how unprepared all these foster homes were to take care of these kids. How can anyone not notice that they were allergic to any of these things? And how did their mom not know? They were young when she died but not that young. And all those years in foster care and nothing in there files said anything about allergies or conditions.
"It looks like it. He's already reacting to it. He's testing positive to everything that we know for sure Callie is allergic to." The doctor kept measuring and making notes. "The reaction might not be as severe but its there. With these two medication allergies, I recommend a medical ID bracelet like Callie and we will have to note it in his chart."
Lena nodded and looked a little worried. What if they had taken him to the doctor and they prescribed penicillin or codeine? They wouldn't have known no to give it to him. Just like they didn't know not to give it to Callie. "What about the scratch test on his back?"
"Well, that he showed up allergic to a few things." She pulled up the paper from the scratch test so she could list them off and tell them which ones to look out for. "The most prominent one is cats. But we already know you don't have any. He's allergic to dogs, dust mites and pollen. He also has Callies Monkey flower allergy but it's mild. Let me look at your arm really quick Jude. Yes, I see the bee reacting but its no where near Callies reaction. From what I have seen he's not deathly allergic to anything. He has allergies but nothing as sever as his sister."
"So what does this mean for Jude?" Lena asked nervously.
"It means that he might have to take allergy medication or if it doesn't help we might have to give him allergy injections. But he's been with you guys for a while now and nothing seems to bother him too much." The doctor explained. She didn't think that it was going to be anything too bad for Jude, she was more worried about Callie.
Lena nodded and thought for a second. "Well, we do keep the yard weed free and we don't plan on getting any pets. Now the monkey flower, we just won't plant in the garden."
Jude was very thoughtful during the whole time they were talking. He all he could think a bout were the results of his test. "So if I'm allergic to all this does that mean Callie is allergic too?" He asked worried.
