Black Hayate's Narrative

Hayate might not be an official member of Team Mustang but he certainly is treated as one. It is rumoured that his attendance is more impressive than Colonel Mustang's and Lieutenant Hawkeye makes certain that the Colonel is aware of it.

Being in the office each day puts little Hayate in a very powerful position. His observational skills often come in handy. For instance, when the Colonel procrastinates instead of doing his paperwork, Hayate makes sure that the Lieutenant is informed immediately. This has lead to a bit of rivalry between Hayate and Cl. Mustang. Some speculate that the rivalry might have also risen from the fact that both Hayate and the Colonel are in a constant battle for the first lieutenant's attention.

But there is more to this competitive relationship than what meets the eye. Hayate has caught the Colonel staring at Lt. Hawkeye several times. It's a common occurrence for the Colonel to gaze at her when he believes no one is looking. He always flushes when he notices Hayate regarding him curiously. However, a sly wink from him is enough to quieten Hayate.

When at home, Hayate is a lot less guarded and a lot more playful, and no matter how tired Lt. Hawkeye is, she makes sure to take him out for a walk. They often run into colleagues and Hayate respectfully wags his tail as a greeting. Mostly its Rebecca or Jean but sometimes the Colonel also makes an appearance. Hayate tries his best to behave but he finds it rather annoying that his time with Riza is cut short by the Colonel's unending chitter-chatter.

Hayate likes to believe that he is a good boy. He tries to live up to this title but its hard to do so when your nemesis shows up at your door with a bouquet of flowers. To console himself, he imagines that Riza finds such things unnecessary and that she only smiles as a curtsey. He even tries to warn her about the Colonel's womanizing ways by barking but is always shushed.

But no matter how much he disapproves of the Colonel, even he must admit that the Lieutenant seems happier when he's around. The biscuits that the Colonel gave him might have helped convince him, but that fact is still awaiting confirmation.
