She takes in a deep breath, wills the butterflies in her stomach to ease, and waltzes right into his office with her head held high. "Hey, Harvey, can we-"
"Not now, Donna," she frowns at his gruff reply, his voice sharp as he looks down at the array of papers on his desk.
"What's wrong?" She sits down on one of the leather chairs in front of him, eyebrows knit in concern.
"Louis," her boyfriend grits out, his eyes still cast down.
Harvey heaves out a sigh, his jaw set when he finally looks up at her, "He dismissed the idea- our plan- to settle with the Cromwell case."
Her eyes widen, "He did what?"
Harvey nods, shuffling the papers in front of him, frustration deepening when he can't find the file he was looking for. She nearly flinches when he throws the stack of papers on the floor next to him, his hands coming up to cover his face.
"But we had a plan, why the hell would he-"
"Because he's Louis!" Harvey rages, "And he has a goddamn chip on his shoulder and an apparent death wish because now we have to go to court and-"
"Harvey, calm down," Donna tries to offer, "I know you're pissed and I understand, but-"
"Are you shitting me right now? The last thing I need is for you to tell me to calm down about this," Harvey swivels his chair around, standing up to walk out. Donna anticipates his move, however, blocking from exiting the room in a flash.
"Okay, I'm going to let that slide because I know you're not upset with me," she pauses, her hand raised against his chest. He visibly deflates then, and she feels the slight guilt appear in his eyes, yet doesn't say anything, "But you can't see him right now."
"And why the hell not?" He asks with a quieter tone to his voice.
Donna narrows her eyes at him, "Because you're pissed, and I get that," she stops him when he tries to interrupt, "but you and I both know if you waltz in there right now with the way your heart is pounding, you're going to rattle him until he loses it and make this situation a hell of a lot worse, so, why don't you go cool off?"
Harvey purses his lips, watching as his girlfriend stands her ground, arms crossed before him as if she were acting bodyguard against the one man he wanted to beat to a pulp in the moment. After a minute, he resigns with a sigh, his hands landing on her arms, "I hate when you're right."
"Really? Because I love it," his resolve slips at her words, lips twitching ever so slightly.
"Okay, I'm gonna go get some coffee, you want anything?"
"Uh, just some tea," when he gives her a quizzical look she shakes her head, "my stomach's been acting funny lately."
He sends her a concerned glance, but only nods at her request, "I'll be right back." With a final squeeze on her arm, he disappears out the door. Donna heaves out a breath, her hands automatically landing on her stomach.
Yeah, she'll tell him later.
…
"Harvey?" Donna calls out as soon as she enters the apartment- their apartment now. A frown sets in when she hears him grunting in the distance, mumbling a few expletives. She flinches when she hears something crashing, "Harvey what the hell are you doing?"
She deposits her purse on the kitchen island, sauntering her way over to his office, the noises from the inside leading her to the small room.
"I can't find it," Harvey grumbles. Her eyes grow wide once she steps inside. Harvey was seated on the floor, a pile of records and books strewn haphazardly all around him. He was digging through the shelves, head buried between a collection of albums.
"What, your mind? Because you seem to have lost that," Donna scolds, carefully walking over to him, trying not to step on any of his records.
Harvey sighs, "I really don't need your sarcasm right now, Donna," he mumbles, letting out a shit and a hard slam against the shelf in front of him.
"Okay, that's it, come on," she places her hand on his arm, gently pulling at him to stand. When he glances up at her, she fixes him with a glare and he resigns, following suit.
"Listen, Donna, I really need to find-"
"What you really need to do is talk to me, okay. What's going on? Is this about Louis?" Her gentle voice makes him sigh, and he takes his hands to rub at his temples. After her talk with him earlier, he seemed to have calmed down, but despite her best efforts, her stubborn of a boyfriend still blew up at the other name partner, nearly causing a scene until she had stepped in between them. She hadn't stayed to make sure they didn't wreak havoc, however, needing to leave to get to her late appointment.
"No," Harvey exhales, finally looking up to meet her eyes, "I mean, yeah, that doesn't help, but… I can't find dad's album."
"Which one?" Her eyebrows furrow, comprehension starting to seep in.
"The one I listened to right before he…" his voice trails off and she nods, sliding her hands up his chest.
"We'll find it," she promises.
Harvey throws his hands up, "I'm not so sure about that, I've already looked twice and," he kicks one of the books at his feet, and her hand immediately grabs onto his arm, steadying him once again.
"Whoa, Harv, what's gotten into you? I know how much this means to you, but-"
"The anniversary of his death is tomorrow, Donna," his voice wavers at his reminder. Her eyes widen then and he lets a full frown set in his face, "You forgot?"
She winces at his words, knowing how messed up it must sound. She never forgot. She had been the one to break the news to him in the first place, and she was Donna, she never forgot about- well, anything.
"I," she swallows back the guilt, "I've been a little- preoccupied, with my doctor's appointment," she mumbles, fixing her eyes on the floor before looking back up at him. His face softens at her words, his concern from earlier returning.
"Is everything okay? I- shit, Donna, I completely forgot about that, I'm sorry," he steps closer to place his hands on her waist, "I'm a goddamn idiot."
"It's okay," she squeezes his hand, "And uh yeah, everything's fine, I just have a stomach bug," she lies through a smile. Well, it wasn't a complete lie.
Harvey nods slowly, his forehead still knit in concern, "You sure?" At her own nod, he heaves out a sigh, "I'm sorry I've been- acting like an ass lately. It's just with Louis being- Louis, and then I got here looking for my dad's album, but then I couldn't find it, and what with tomorrow being-"
"I get it," she whispers, inching closer to him, her hands landing on either side of his waist.
"I'm sorry," he mumbles, leaning down to kiss her forehead, "He would've been happy about us, you know?" He whispers after a beat, "Always joked about wanting to have little redheaded grandchildren," he chuckles lightly.
His words bring a sudden sting to her eyes, and she clears her throat to swallow back the lump that forms, "Why don't you go make us some tea and I'll help you look? I know it has to be here, because you never kept that one at the firm," she placates gently.
Harvey nods, leaning down to kiss the corner of her mouth, her words already asserting a calmness within him. "Okay, I'll be right back."
Donna watches his retreating form, a surge of guilt and nerves starting to eat her from the inside out. She sighs then, placing her hands on her abdomen, "We'll tell him some other time, bug."
…
Donna wakes to the sounds of what she can decipher to be yelling, the familiar voice of her boyfriend shaking her out of a deep sleep. She stirs in bed, her eyes squinting open against the light that shines through the room.
"Are you shitting me right now, Louis? No- I wasn't supposed to come in today, I told you this-"
Donna frowns at his words, worry seeping in further. They had spent half an hour looking for his dad's album before they found it, placed in a pile he had already set to the side. Still, he had seemed off for the rest of the night, and she knew his concern over their case was already adding to his uneasiness of having to go through yet another anniversary of his father's death. His words from the night before kept replaying in her mind, the soft admission having caught her off guard.
He would've been happy about us.
Always joked about wanting to have little redheaded grandchildren.
She knows he would be happy with the news, they had briefly talked about having kids, but still, she didn't want to add the ever growing pile of things that were adding to his stress. And she knew he would start setting a protective shield around her, but today wasn't the day for that either.
Sitting up in bed, she swings her legs to the side when a sudden wave of nausea takes over. She closes her eyes on instinct, trying to breathe through the uneasiness in her stomach, willing the revulsion to stay at bay. When she feels her stomach settling, she inhales one more time before standing up. Making her way to the living room, she hears the tail end of Harvey's conversation.
"I knew you were an asshole, Louis but this is pretty fucking low even for you." With a hard press on his phone, he's throwing the device against the couch, a heavy grunt leaving his lips as he does so.
"What's going on?" Donna takes a tentative step toward him, watching in concern as he paces the small area, his fists clenched at his sides.
"He's baiting me, he's-" Harvey grits his teeth, shaking his head.
"Louis?"
"Who else!" He snaps, raising his hands as his agitation comes to fruition.
"Okay, Harvey, just- take a deep breath, what did he do now?" She tries for a gentle approach, taking another small step toward him. Her hand settles on her stomach in instinct, a slow wave of new nausea starting to wash over her again.
"You know what today is, you know what we had planned," he starts, watching her nod, "And he knew, I told him we weren't going to come in today, but being the five-year-old that he is, he set our meeting today."
"With Cromwell? I thought he didn't want to settle."
Harvey shakes his head, "He didn't, but," a humorless laugh escapes him, "he changed his mind and after miraculously changing Cromwell's, he decided to set our meeting for today."
Donna takes a breath, blinking back the slight dizziness that shakes her, "So, what are you going to do?"
"I'm going to the firm because he didn't really give me much of a damn choice," Harvey seethes, hitting the leg of the couch with a swift kick, "I swear, Donna, I feel like beating the shit out of him today."
"Okay, Harvey, I know you're upset, and believe me, I am too, but you have- whoa," the room around her starts to spin, her legs suddenly feeling like jello, and before she can reach the ground, Harvey's by her side in a flash.
"Hey hey, are you okay? What's going on?" His arms are holding her upright, forehead creased with unbridled worry as he holds her against him.
Donna closes her eyes, her hands clutching his biceps in a visceral grip. He barely winces at the sharp pain of her nails digging in through his skin, no doubt leaving angry marks in their wake.
"I just-" she breathes out slowly, willing the fog to clear long enough for her to be able to open her eyes.
Harvey brings his hand up to cup her cheek, feeling her skin clamming up, "This is a little more than a stomach bug, isn't it?"
Donna shakes her head, "No, no it's fine, I'm- shit," she tightens her hold on him, another wave of dizziness hitting her hard.
"Donna, hey, talk to me, what are you feeling?" He angles her head gently until she's facing him, her eyes still closed.
"I'm fine, just- I haven't eaten anything yet, is all," she heaves out a weak laugh, her eyes finally opening to watch his concerned ones looking into her.
Harvey purses his lips at her words, and she swallows thickly, already knowing he wasn't buying her futile attempt to reassure him, "You're not telling me everything, Donna. What's going on?"
Her eyes search his for a moment, trying to come up with an excuse that would buy her more time, but when his gaze doesn't falter from her own, she's looking down on a sigh, "I didn't want to tell you today," she mumbles.
"Tell me what?"
She opens her mouth to speak before closing it again, shaking her head, "It's nothing. It can wait," when she moves to step away from him, he's grabbing hold of her again, firmly yet gently all at once.
"Donna, what's going on? What did the doctor really say?" She bites her lip when the visible fear in his eyes doesn't waver, and she feels that familiar guilt bubbling up through her again.
"I-" she clears her throat, a lame attempt to prolong the moment, when his forehead creases further, she expels a breath, the words falling out of her in a near whisper, "I'm pregnant."
The room seems to grow still in that moment, Harvey freezing in his spot, his hands still holding onto her slim form. She notices the creases in his forehead relaxing, his mouth parting ever so slightly at her words.
"Harvey?" Donna prods gently after a moment, her nerves making her stomach churn.
"You're-?" He doesn't get the rest of the words out, his throat constricting and his palms growing sweaty against her.
Donna nods, a quiet "yeah," leaving her lips.
"We're-" he glances down at her stomach on reflex before his eyes meet hers again, suddenly shining with unshed tears, "we're having a baby?"
At his small and timid voice, Donna lets her lips curl up in a slow smile, "We are," she croaks out.
His lips tighten at her confirmation, a fresh wave of tears clouding his vision, "We're having a baby?" She nearly laughs at the wonder in his voice, and she feels his hands shaking slightly against her, but his hold never falters.
"I uh, took the test two days ago, but I went to the doctor's yesterday to confirm, even though I already knew," she gives him a nonchalant shrug, and he shakes his head, the disbelief evident in his voice.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I almost did, twice, actually," she gives him a small laugh, "but uh, you were upset, first with Louis, and then about your dad's record and then today- I didn't want to tell you like this, when you were upset, and- today."
"Donna," he steps closer to her, his voice steadier now with his hands falling down to her waist, "You should've told me."
"I know," she defends herself, "but I also didn't want to tarnish the news with you being upset."
Harvey only shakes his head, a smile crossing his features as the excitement starts to settle in him, "This is- I can't even remember what I was upset about right now," he admits with a light chuckle, his thumbs starting a low caress against her.
Donna mirrors his mirth, "Really? You're happy about this?"
He furrows his eyebrows at her words, "You thought I wouldn't be?"
"No no, I did, just- today, what with it being the anniversary of your father's… and then Louis called… I knew you'd be happy, but I didn't want this to add your heavy load of a day already," she shrugs.
"Stubborn, stubborn woman," Harvey cajoles playfully, "Right now, the last thing I'm thinking about is Louis, and as far as my dad goes… I told you, he would've been so happy for us," he finishes quietly, and his eyes continue to water at the memory of his father.
Donna nods, her own eyes clouding over, "He would have."
They remain quiet for a minute, both cherishing a moment of silence for the older Specter no longer in their lives. Harvey is the first to break the silence, clearing the emotions out of his throat with a slow grin. "So, you're really- pregnant?"
Donna tilts her head, her lips twitching in amusement, "What, you think I'm joking?"
"No," he lets out a watery laugh, "I'm just- I'm trying to wrap my head around this."
Donna winds her arm around him then, "Well, believe it, Specter. You knocked me up."
His cheeks stretch completely at her words, and he's cupping her face to reel her into a bruising kiss. The move takes her by surprise, and a squeal leaves her mouth. His hands wrap around her protectively, holding her flush against him as their lips continue to move together, a languid caress as he playfully nips at her, his grin making it impossible to continue.
"God, this is-"
"A shock?" She provides with a quirk of an eyebrow.
Harvey chuckles, "To start with, yeah," his eyes soften again, raking over her form, "I'm so happy."
That familiar lump in her throat returns, and she can merely nod in response, pulling up on her tiptoes to give him a hug, "Me too," she whispers against him.
"What else did the doctor tell you?" He asks once she pulls away, his hold still firm against her.
"Nothing much, I just made an appointment for an ultrasound next week, and she told me to expect more morning sickness and dizzy spells."
Harvey frowns at her cringe, his hand coming down to rest on her abdomen, "How are you feeling now? I know earlier…"
"I'm fine, still a little… woozy, but, better," she gives him a reassuring smile, bringing her hand up to smooth the crease between his eyebrows, "don't worry too much, I'll be fine."
"I know," he kisses the inside of her wrist when she slides her hand down to cup his cheek, "but I'm still going to worry about my pregnant girlfriend."
Donna chuckles, "You're going to spoil me, aren't you?"
"I thought I already did," he playfully quips.
She rolls her yes, the move diluted by the smile on her lips, "Just wait until I'm sending you off to buy me ice cream in the middle of the night because we don't have any."
"I'll make sure to always have the fridge stocked," he promises, bringing her hands up to his lips.
"And what if I eat it all?" She challenges.
"Then I will haul my ass out the door in the middle of the night to buy you some chunky monkey." Harvey pulls her in then, his arms in their earlier position, placed on her lower back, "Did I pass the test?"
Donna ponders his words for a moment, "Not sure yet, I'll remind you again when this actually happens."
"You're not going to make this easy for me, are you?" He mumbles against her lips.
"No," she chortles, watching as his own eyes crinkling, "but where's the fun in that?" She pulls him down for a kiss then, their teeth clashing in the process. And as she kisses him, her tongue snaking out in a gentle tease, he knows he's ruined, but he already knows it's worth it.
