Look forward to more and thanks for reading.
Chapter 50:
"She what?!" Freya stood before Katara and Aang shocked, the avatar was still looking a little dizzy from his attack on the Fire Nation fleet with the Ocean Spirit.
"She gave up her life for the moon." Aang repeated
"Yue became the moon spirit." Katara admitted.
Freya blinked shocked, her eyes pricking sadly.
"Oh…" she whispered
"What about you?" Katara questioned "You went running after Zhao without any bending powers."
Freya bit her lip.
"I actually found Zuko fighting Zhao." she confessed
"What?!" the two chorused. She shrugged
"Zhao hates… hated, Zuko. He had those pirates blow up his ship in an attempt to murder the prince." the two looked stunned by this.
"But then how did Zuko get here?" Katara questioned
"He stowed away on Zhao's ship with his uncle."
"And he just told you this?" Aang asked
"Course he did, Iroh loves me." Freya smirked. The two looked at her like she was mad.
"What?" she asked
"Well what happened to Zhao?" Aang asked
"Well, after it dropped you off the Ocean spirit arrived and… it dragged Zhao down into the ocean." Freya admitted
"It drowned him…?" Katara asked with her hands over her mouth.
"No… I think it dragged him to the spirit world…" Freya said "Trapped him there forever for his crimes against its companion." Katara and Aang shared a look as Freya shrugged.
"How's Sokka doing by the way?" the two frowned and they turned to see him and the Chief.
"He's okay. He needed to talk with Chief Arnook." Katara said "He took it rather hard."
"I wouldn't blame him." Freya nodded as they watched him. "It was very brave of Yue though." she believed "Very selfless." the two nodded.
"What do we do now?"
"Now, you continue your journey." The three turned to see Pakku. Aang lowered his gaze and the two girls glanced at him as he turned to move towards Momo who was playing in the snow.
"Continue?" Katara asked
"We need to head back to the Earth Kingdom." Freya nodded "Aang needs to learn earth bending next."
"I've decided to go to the South Pole. Some other benders and healers want to join me." Pakku said as he looked over the damage of the city and then turned back to the girls. "It's time we helped rebuild our sister tribe." the girls smiled
"What about Aang?" Katara asked as they looked at the airbender "He still needs to learn waterbending."
"I think he's got what he needs to do so." Pakku smiled and the girls shared a look "He better get used to calling you "Master." The girls smiled as Pakku looked satisfied.
"Thank you for your help Master Pakku." Freya said and Katara followed her lead as she bowed to the man.
"The pleasure is all mine." Pakku said, returning the bow.
The girls watched him as he left and Freya looked over the ocean.
Hope they're okay… she shook her head and Katara glanced at her.
"By the way, what happened to Zuko?" Katara wondered. Freya didn't looked at her but she just shook her head and said nothing. Katara watched before she turned to Aang, Freya sighed as the waterbender walked over to the airbender. Aang turned to her and they shared a look before embracing one another. Freya chuckled as Momo looked at them sadly.
"You too, Momo." Katara allowed.
"Come here." Aang chuckled extending his arm for the Lemur to jump onto. Momo circled Aang's shoulders and Katara scratched the little guy as Freya walked towards them and took Aang's hand in her's. Sokka appeared beside her and put his hand on her shoulder and they shared a smile.
"Are we ready for the next step?" Freya asked and the three shared a look before they nodded.
"Bring it on." Sokka grinned and Freya chuckled as they looked out at the moon still hovering largely in the sky. Appa rose up beside them and the four grinned.
"We'll take you part of the way to the Earth Kingdom on our way to the south." Pakku said as the four stood by a map with the Master. "Here you'll take Appa and continue on your journey."
"The problem is you'll need an earth bending teacher." Arnook said. Freya and Aang shared a grin.
"We already have someone in mind." Freya said
"King Bumi in Omashu is an old friend of mine." Aang explained "We already met up with him on our journey here."
"He did a pretty good job of giving us wisdom." Freya said "In his own mad way."
"That makes the job one step simpler." Pakku smiled.
"So you say, but let's be honest, nothing's ever easy for us." Freya sighed as Katara chuckled.
"We just need to chart a course straight for Omashu." Sokka shrugged
"Sure when's it ever that easy?" Katara asked and Freya nodded.
"There's an Earth Kingdom base just off the western shore of the Earth Kingdom. We can send a message there for the general to escort you to Omashu." Pakku pointed across the map.
"That way you can come to as little amount of conflict." Arnook nodded
"Let's hope so." Freya mumbled.
"The ships will be ready in a few days. But the journey by boat may take a while."
"Uh, question," Freya began "Do you guys have a boat that can hold Appa? We got to you in two days on him but he can't fly to keep up with the boats without getting tired." Aang looked at the Chief and Master bender as they thought.
"We may have one that can hold your bison." Pakku thought
"We can always extend it if need be." Arnook decided and the four smiled in appreciation.
"Until then, rest up. We've been through much these past few days." the four nodded and bowed to the Chief and Master before exiting the war room.
"I can't believe we're leaving already." Katara said
"Well we don't really have a reason to stay." Freya admitted
"What about me learning water bending?" Aang asked
"Pakku believes Katara's experienced enough to teach you." Freya smiled and Aang turned to the girl who smiled.
"And let's not forget Freya. We all know she teaches better than she thinks." Katara pointed and Freya rolled her eyes.
"The only problem is once we leave we have less of an advantage." Freya said as she indicated to the ice. "In order for Aang to practice we're going to have to station most of our stops around water."
"If we do that too often someone will be able to track us." Sokka thought
"And we can't carry water barrels around, that'd be too much for Appa." Aang nodded
"We'll just have to leave our water stops erratic." Freya shrugged. "I'm sure we'll be fine. Zhao's not a problem anymore so,"
"And what about Zuko?" Katara asked
"Well he and Iroh were still here when Aang sent the ships fleeing, and Zuko's ship was blown up. I doubt they'll have much in the way of resources to catch up straight away." Freya thought
"It should give us an advantage for a while." Sokka nodded. "The fact that Aang defeated an entire fleet by himself might cause them to rethink attacking us right away." he grinned
"That was only because of the Avatar State and the Ocean Spirit though." Aang frowned
"Yes but do they know that?" Freya wondered as they reached their hut and moved inside.
Freya collapsed onto the fur rug and sighed in contentment as Katara sat herself down as well.
"You know, I feel rather good now that we get a bit of a break from everything." Freya admitted "We've got one element down, the Fire Nation wont be returning here for at least a while, we know exactly where we're headed next, how to get there and where it is." she listed
"Don't jinx us!" Sokka snapped
"Sokka, shits gonna happen to us whether we jinx it or not." Freya believed with a roll of her eyes.
Aang looked at her and caught the movement before he sat up. Freya noticed his gaze as he stared at her and looked confused.
"What?" she asked. Katara and Sokka looked at Aang and then Freya but he just shook his head.
"Nothing."
"Yeah right, what's up?" she asked sitting up
"I was just wondering, the Ocean spirit captured Zhao after the moon was back, which mean you had your waterbending. How'd Zuko escape?" Sokka and Katara turned from Aang to Freya, now curious themselves.
Freya stared at the avatar before she took a breath. They'd probably hate her if they knew she'd helped them leave… but clearly there was no way to get out of this without a lie of some sort…
"I…" she thought "Let him go." Freya said. It's not a full lie.
"What?" Sokka and Katara demanded
"He protected me against Zhao, I kinda owed him." she shrugged, which also wasn't a lie.
"You saved him in a blizzard, he owed you first." Sokka confessed. Freya sighed and slumped her head into her hand.
"Aang would have done that anyway." she mumbled
"I can't believe you helped the enemy. He's tried to kill us!" Sokka scolded
"No. He's tried to maim us. There's a difference." Freya said and Sokka's mouth was dropped open at her.
"I can't believe you're defending him." Katara joined in
"He kidnapped you!" Sokka reminded her
"But he didn't keep me locked away." Freya added
"Are you seriously insinuating that the guy who's chased us all over the world and tired to kidnap the worlds only hope has a nice side?" Katara asked
"Well… he does have a nice side…" Freya said quietly
"What?!" the siblings questioned again. Aang looked at Freya and she glanced at him.
"Zhao tried to blow him up and yet Zuko still tried to save him from the ocean spirit." Freya admitted "Plus he cared for me when I came down with a fever and he saved—" Freya stopped and she pursed her lips before glancing at Aang. The airbender blinked before down casting his gaze as he realised where she'd been going.
"Zuko just wants his dad to accept him and let him get back home to his people, that's why he wants Aang. He doesn't care for winning the war."
"He tattled to me about wanting his honour." Katara snapped
"Yeah, I think it's more his father's acceptance and love he wants, and he thinks this will somehow let him have it." Freya frowned "I tried to convince him that he shouldn't need to earn his father's love but he's so focused on it that it didn't really work."
"Of course it didn't work! He's Zuko, he doesn't care about anyone but himself." Sokka thought. Freya shot him a glare and the three looked surprised before she got up and left the tent.
"Why did she glare at me?" Sokka questioned
"And why is she defending him?" Katara asked strongly. Aang got to his feet.
"I'll go talk to her." he decided before following the water bender.
Freya sat on the top of a pillar away from the ground and stared at the rising sun with a scowl. It changed into a frown though as she rethought the water tribe siblings words.
You're being silly. You can't defend Zuko to them after all he's done. And you know he wont change completely while he's so focused on his goal. Freya huffed "If it was that easy I would have done it already." she grumbled
"You okay?" Freya turned to have Aang land beside her. She sighed and hung her legs off the pillar so there was enough room for Aang to sit beside her.
"I'm fine."
"You didn't seem fine." Aang thought "I didn't think I'd ever see the day you'd defend Zuko."
"Yeah. Me either." she admitted "Guess he's just done enough to make me feel there's some hope for him after all."
Aang said nothing and he looked out at the ruined city.
"Silly thing to think." she whispered
"No. It's good that you can believe there's hope for him." Aang said
"Well, the fact that he saved you from Zhao helps." Freya smirked
"How'd you know about that?" Aang wondered
"Zuko told me." Freya shrugged "I think he wanted me to see he was an okay person or something. He knew how much I worried about you too. Though I knew he just wanted to do it so he could kidnap you himself." she rolled her eyes and Aang chuckled
"Probably." he nodded.
Freya sighed and Aang turned to her.
"I noticed your eyes changed?" Freya nodded
"I had no bending. And although Zuko did protect me I didn't stand around while the two fought." Freya said "The doctor on Zuko's boat said I had to use my bending to release the pressure that was building up. I had no water bending so when I faced Zhao, I fire bended instead." she explained
"You fought with Zuko?" Aang asked surprised and Freya nodded again.
"Yeah…"
"So Zuko knows you can bend two elements!" Aang realised
"Yeah." the girl repeated
"Why would you do that?!" Aang questioned
"I was too angry at Zhao for killing the moon! He took my water bending from me! My bending is the only thing I've got left of my parents, the fact that my water bending was gone felt like my mother had completely vanished." Freya admitted "I was so furious at Zhao that I didn't care that Zuko found out." she mumbled.
"Do you… trust him?" Aang wondered. Freya looked at the airbender as she debated over that question.
"I don't know…" she said, her eyebrows furrowing "I trust we'll see him again. I trust he'll continue in his quest. I don't know if I trust him with information… but I do trust that he's rather lonely and lost in this world. His mother and uncle were the only people who cared about him until his mother vanished. Now he has to compete with his sister for his father's affection. And Fire Lord Ozai is the one who burnt Zuko's face…" Freya explained. She sighed and turned away from Aang.
"I don't know what to think about that Prince…"
"What about how you feel?" Aang wondered. Freya rose an eyebrow and looked at him. "Just, the way you were defending him back there…"
Freya said nothing for a minute as she looked down and then back at the sun.
"I don't know." she whispered. "What I do know is that getting you to Omashu is our next task." she said looking at him and Aang nodded in agreement "We can worry about the rest when we get there." Freya stood up and helped Aang to his feet before her.
"So…" she began "Race you back to the hut!" and she launched off the top of the pillar.
"Hey!" Aang complained before he spun his glider and launched into the air to fly after her.
