King William nervously paced outside of he and his wife's quarters.
William and his wife, Queen Alissa, ruled over the kingdom of Elenberg. They were kind and just rulers who well respected and loved by their subjects. But despite this, they had longed a family of their own. And on this day, William and Alissa were expecting a child.
Every time William touched his hands, he could feel the sweat from his palms.
"Relax, William ole boy. There's nothing to be nervous about. I mean what do I have to be nervous about. I mean I'm only bringing a child into the world-well technically, my wife is but that's besides the point. But I have nothing to worry about, I can be a loving father. How hard is it to raise a child?! Honestly! You just need to feed it, wash it, dress it, take it out for walks, no! That's what you do with a dog! You're not expecting a dog, William! You're expecting a boy or a girl for Heaven's sake! But that's OK. I can do this. Taking care of a child can't be any harder that ruling a kingdom of over a thousand people, right? Right! So again, there's nothing to worry about, nothing to be nervous about," William said to himself as he paced.
Just then, a nurse maiden emerged from the doors door of William's quarters. "Your Majesty?" she said.
"I SAID I'M NOT NERVOUS!" William shouted, causing the maiden to jump.
"Oh, oh, of course you're not, Your Majesty. I-I-I didn't mean to..." the maiden said nervously.
"Oh no, I'm sorry. Just have the child on the brain," said William.
"Well then you'll be happy to know that said child has been born," said the maiden.
William gasped with shocked and his eyes widened with happiness as the maiden motioned him to his quarters. The king happily made his way inside while the maiden wiped the sweat off her forehead, still in shock from William earlier outburst.
Inside more nurse maidens surrounded the bedside of King William's wife.
William slowly approached her.
Alissa's golden blonde hair was slightly messed up and her beautiful face was sweaty with exhaustion, but had a beaming smile attached to it as she held in her arms, her and William's newborn baby.
"Are you alright, my dear?" William asked his wife.
"As alright as any woman giving birth can be," Alissa answered.
William sat by his wife's side and held the baby along with her, getting a good look at it's face.
"It's a girl," one of the maiden's said.
"A girl," William said softly. "She's so beautiful."
"Yes...obviously, she doesn't take after her father," Alissa teased.
"Well hopefully, she won't have your stubbornness," William teased back.
The new mother and father nuzzled each other, beaming with joy and pride at what they considered to be their newest treasure.
"So what shall we call her?" William wondered.
"How about Alexandria?" Alissa suggested.
"That was your mother's name," said William.
"So?! What wrong with that?!" Alissa asked.
"It has to be something original, like...Brunella," said William.
"That's the name of one of the cooks. The one with the buck teeth," said Alissa.
"What about Gretchen?" suggested one of the nurse maidens.
Both William and Alissa shook their heads, agreeing that that was a terrible name for their child.
Finally, after some collaboration, the two had come to a decision and gave the child the name, Odette.
Soon after, the king and queen held a celebrating in honor of Odette's arrival, inviting many monarchs from different kingdoms. Alissa spared no expense for the occasion with the finest silk rugs, tables decorated with diamond plates and cups, and a golden crib for the baby.
"Think this is 'enough,' my dear?" William asked sarcastically.
"You know me by now, William," Alissa answered.
"Yes, unfortunately," William said with a smirk.
"This is our baby. Nothing but the best for her," said Alissa.
William placed a hand on his queen's. "I know. You're right. You're crazy, but right," he said.
Alissa responded by pushing her husband on the arm.
Among the royals that had attended were two of William and Alissa's best friends; King Maxwell and his wife, Queen Uberta.
The two approached the new parents, giving them both curtseys of respect.
William stood from his throne and gave his longtime friend a hug. "Ah! Maxwell, my friend! It's been too long! I haven't seen you in ages!" he exclaimed.
"You mean since I once again bested you in poker?" Maxwell said.
"Correction, It hasn't been long enough," William said.
The two shared a hearty laugh before William rubbed Maxwell's bald head.
Meanwhile, Uberta and Alissa shared a kiss on the cheek.
"Oh! Alissa! Congratulations! I'm so happy for you! Good thing too. I didn't want to be the only one giving birth! How embarrassing would that be?!" Uberta teased.
"Oh stop, you!" Alissa said.
Around the same time of Odette's birth, Uberta and Maxwell had also been blessed with a child; a baby boy named, Derek. They had brought their child with them to celebrate the event as well as get acquainted with the newly born princess.
William and Alissa noticed Uberta carrying the baby in her arms.
"Oh my goodness! Is this the Derek you wrote to me about?!" Alissa asked Uberta.
"The very same," said Uberta.
"Oh! He's so cute!" said Alissa.
"Yes, a strapping young lad, I'd say," said William.
"Watch out. He may give you a run for your money," Alissa teased.
William gave a sarcastic laugh before he and Alissa nuzzled each other on the nose.
Unknown to the king and queen, another observer was watching from outside the castle doors. An enchanter known as Daigon. But he wasn't as enthused as the others.
Meanwhile, Uberta insisted that the new infants get to know one another better and sat them on the floor just opposed to each other. The parents watched as the two babies gently touched each other on the nose and lips.
"Aww! They're so cute!" said Alissa.
Uberta shared Alissa's compliments, which is why she felt that this moment needed to be made even more special than it already was. With a snap of her fingers, she summoned one of her servants, who had a trunk full of baby clothes that she wanted Derek and Odette to try on.
"Oh! I brought they just for the occasion!" exclaimed Uberta.
"Really, you didn't have to," said Alissa.
"You REALLY didn't have to," William said upon getting a good look at one of the clothes.
"I told her that, but once she gets started, you can't stop her. Just like when we were dating," Maxwell said to William.
Uberta had Odette and Derek try on many different outfits; ones with ruffles, puffy shirts, giant wigs; etc. She snapped her fingers again and summoned the royal painter to paint their portraits, much to Alissa, Maxwell, and William's embarrassment.
As this was happening, Daigon looked on with disgust and anger before he took his leave.
In the midst of the painting, seeing the two babies together, Uberta came upon an idea, that she proposed to her husband, as well as William and Alissa. And that idea was Derek and Odette be brought together each summer in the hopes that they would become friends and maybe, just maybe, fall in love and be married, joining their kingdoms together.
Alissa was skeptical about this idea. "Hmm, I don't know, Uberta. It would seem like we would be forcing them upon one another," she said.
"Oh, absolutely not! I would only be one summer a year! That would give them enough time to get to know each other quite well!" said Uberta.
"Spending a little time wouldn't be so bad, I suppose," said Maxwell.
"And getting to know each other would be nice for them," said William.
"Way to be on my side," Alissa said before she elbowed William in the chest.
It took some convincing, but eventually, Alissa agreed to the arrangement. There couldn't be anything wrong with some friendly interactions between Derek and Odette, as long as the others didn't try to overblow things.
So now it was unanimous, once they were old enough, Derek and Odette would spend the first of what would be many summers to come.
