I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe out there.
This chapter is Padmé centric. It's not nearly as long as its predecessor, but lots of good stuff is on its way.
Chapter Ten
Thin Ice
Hours later...
Empress Padmé Amidala-Vader heard the door to Ruwee's click shut. She took a deep breath and sighed as she leaned back against the door. Padmé wanted to go to bed, but she had one more thing to do before bed. Several more things actually, but they would wait until tomorrow.
Padmé did her best to gather herself and walked down to Arabella's room.
She took another deep breath. She was already tired. Padmé would check on Arabella and then go to bed. While she needed to speak with her husband, but she didn't have the energy. Tomorrow, she told herself, they would talk tomorrow.
Padmé arrived outside Arabella's door.
Knock, knock.
"Arabella," The Empress called out. Not a good idea, using that tone of voice, but she had been attending to Imperial matters all day. She knocked on the door two more times. "Arabella, it's your Mother." She said more gently, maternally. "Arabella, please open the door." She waited some more. Pacing around a few times, trying to stay awake. Over one minute passed. "Arabella, open the door now." She said very calmly, but firmly. "Open the door or I will have the droids break it down."
"Alright, alright, I'm coming. I'm coming." She heard Arabella repeat bitterly.
Padmé sighed as she looked down. This was not going to be pleasant. Why did he do this? Why didn't he send Ruwee and Arabella away as they should have been?
Arabella opened the door. Her hair was a mess, her dress wrinkled, and her eyes were puffy.
"Mooomm..." She wailed.
Padmé took her daughter into her arms. "It's alright, shhhh! It's going to be alright."
"Oh," Arabella sobbed and sobbed some more. "How...oh, how could he?"
Padmé rubbed circles along her daughter's back, "He's angry. He's..."She could feel a pair of eyes on them.
Two pairs.
Ragnar and Reinhard.
They looked confused and worried.
Judging by their confused faces, they didn't know about the day's events, nor did they need to know.
"Boys, go watch that series on the HoloNet," Padmé tried to think of its name. "Uh, that space series," What was it called? She could not recall.
"You mean Galactic Rescuers?" Reinhard asked.
"Yes," Padmé said reluctantly. It wasn't the series she had been thinking of, but perhaps they had a new favorite. She couldn't keep up. She usually wasn't home to watch them with the children.
Padmé watched them slowly walk to their chamber and shut the door. They were clearly wondering what was happening.
Satisfied, she closed the door to Arabella's room. She led Arabella to the foot of her bed.
Arabella sniffled, "I've always heard Daddy...Dad could be...but I never, h-he never..." Fresh tears ran down her face.
"Shhh... I know," Padmé pulled her close. "I know, shhhh. I'm sorry you and your brother had to witness that. It should never have happened."
"Even if we had..." Arabella shrugged, "It's wouldn't have made it any better."
"No," She kissed her forehead and stood up for a few moments. "Your Father can be...very difficult. He's sometimes... he has to be cruel to keep the Empire. To keep the power we have. Otherwise..." Padmé's voice trailed off. She was unsure how to continue.
Arabella nodded as she brushed her hair behind her ears," They would lock us up."
"Yes," Padmé said quietly. Actually they would likely lock them away, then execute them after some sham of a trial. Though they might keep the younger children alive to use as puppet rulers.
"But how can he do such a thing to his own daughter?" Arabella did not understand.
"Your Father went too far, but so did your sister. Leia broke a very important alliance." Padmé felt the world spinning in circles. She closed and then reopened her eyes. "As for your Father, he doesn't handle..." Padmé searched for the right words. "He doesn't handle things...not going his way well." She felt she could phrased that better, but how? And she was too tired and drained to care.
Thankfully, Arabella seemed to understand. Though she went on, "B-but to banish her..."
Padmé plainly replied, "Leia has made her bed." Now she had to lie in it. "But your Father, he will relent." Padmé did not see him staying mad at Leia forever. Yes, they were both very stubborn, but loved each other very deeply. Why else would he act out in such a way?
"No," Arabella crossed her arms. "No, he won't," She shook her head. "Did you see him? See the way he acted?"
Padmé felt like they were going in circles. How could she make Arabella understand? At least Ruwee seemed more calm, hurt, but relatively calm. "Yes, but I've also been married to him for nearly twenty years," She stated. Had it really been so long? "I know him," She added. "In time, he'll relent."
"No...no, he won't," Arabella said again. "He won't." She sounded so certain.
Padmé held her tongue. "Arabella, will you trust me? Okay?" She placed a hand on her shoulder. "Darling, I will deal with your Father and sister. For now, please leave everything to me."
"But—"
"No, no buts. Stay out of it." Padmé ordered with her index finger held up. "Do not try to speak with your Father or Leia about this. Do not try to make peace between them. It won't work," She warned. "Understand?"
"Well..."
"Ara."
Arabella looked up, "I understand."
Padmé nodded in approval. Hopefully her message had gotten through.
Arabella hesitated, "I mean..." She was thinking something over, "So Leia got married. So what?" She shrugged with a smile.
Padmé remained silent. She thought about explaining the ramifications of Leia's decision, but there was no point. Arabella didn't understand, listen, or both.
Padmé shook her head.
Arabella had so much to learn about politics and life in general. Arabella probably saw Leia getting married as something great and romantic.
She and Vader had tried for years, but Padmé knew schooling and politics would never be her second eldest daughter's strength, though thankfully Leia had those skills. Even Luke had some potential. Ruwee had the intelligence, but lacked the confidence and charm. She was unsure about Arabella, though she supposed she had beauty, grace, and charm thanks to her dancing lessons.
"There's far more to it." Padmé shook her head.
She had briefly considering a match between Arabella and Isolder since Leia was no longer an option, but it was impossible. No way they could allow that to happen. Yes, she was still only a girl and such a marriage would not take place for years. Regardless, the Queen Mother would eat her alive. If only Animé were older. Though there was another possibility Padmé was considering. Her younger niece, Senator Pooja Naberrie was still unmarried, but she doubted the Queen Mother or Isolder would accept.
"I'm sure Mr. Solo has his...charms," For lack of a better word. "But he is not...he is not for your sister. Each of you must marry a noble or Royal, someone to help further our goals, our line, and to protect the family." Padmé explained. She had hinted at such things over the years, though not quite as bluntly.
Arabella nodded eagerly, "I am prepared to do my duty."
Padmé smiled. She and Vader had tried to instruct duty and such values into their children. At least they managed to get that right with Arabella. "Yes, but hopefully not for another five to seven years." Padmé ran her fingers through Arabella's honey-golden hair. "Enjoy being young and free." She kissed her forehead.
Arabella shrugged as if she did not know what that meant.
Padmé supposed it was that in between stage in her life. She was no longer a child, but not quite a woman either. She wanted to be an adult, but often enjoyed being a kid too.
Padmé put a hand on her shoulder, "Now, are you better?" She asked.
"I suppose," Arabella said quietly.
"If you to speak with someone, speak to Ruwee or me, but do not mention this in front of Reinhard and Ragnar." She did not need two upset eight year olds.
Arabella nodded.
"I'm turning in," Padmé covered her mouth as she yawned. "Try to get some sleep."
"I'll try," Arabella said with something of a nod.
The pair hugged each other and Padmé left the room.
Padmé went down the hallway, running into a familiar protocol droid.
"Threepio, have you seen the Emperor?" She doubted he had, but just in case.
"Uh, no, mistress Padmé," Threepio said with an empty tray.
Mistress Padmé?
She could not recall the last time he called her that.
"If you see him," Though she doubted he would join her tonight. "Tell him I do not wish to see him tonight. Tell him we will speak in the morning," She said cooly.
"Yes, mistress Padmé," Threepio replied as Padmé closed her bedroom doors.
The next morning...
"AAAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHH!"
Vader had screamed and let out a wave of Force energy. He had hoped it would help.
It did not.
Like the entire week, it had failed.
Vader had failed. He had failed his wife, his children, and the Empire.
Leia had failed them.
Even he was struggling.
Failing...
They were all failing.
What was he going to do?
If Luke failed...
No, if Luke...died, their backup Leia was no longer an option.
She was married.
Leia is married.
His little girl was married.
Without his permission or consent.
How could he let this happen? Vader could have done more. He should have done more. If he had done more then she would have been home sooner. He had not pressed finding her too hard. Vader felt given time, she would come home. He was showing her that he trusted and believed in her. What a fool he was. She was only eighteen years old. What did she know about life? Vader should have done more. If he had then she would not have been swindled and tricked into marrying him.
He would not even dare think his name.
That rogue...
That liar...
Swindler.
All out traitor.
He was not Royal, wealthy, or even Force sensitive. What could Leia possibly see in him?
She was only doing this to anger him and her mother.
Vader growled as he clenched his fists. He had not felt such anger in such a long time. Vader screamed again, "AAGGHHHHH!" He flung another weight across the room. "GRRrraah!"
If only he could kill him!
Maybe he should...
But would Leia truly betray them?
He slammed his fists down on the floor.
Damn it.
Sith hell!
If his two eldest children were out of the line of succession, what then?
Ruwee was no leader or Emperor. Even if he had shown such strength, he was not sensitive to the Force. Vader could not pass the mantle of Dark Lord of the Sith onto him. He had once tested Ruwee's midi-chlorians, they were only about 2,000. Roughly the same count as Padmé or the average being. For a long time, Vader could not understand how Ruwee could be his child.
Vader had been born so strong in the Force. How could he have a child not be Force sensitive? He had even oh so briefly wondered if Ruwee was not his son. Vader even had Ruwee tested, but threw the results away before ever opening them. In his heart, he knew Ruwee was his son.
Eventually he accepted the notion that non-Force sensitive beings had children strong in the Force everyday so it made sense it could happen the other way around.
As for Arabella, she was lovely, but silly and carefree. He adored his second daughter, but she could never be Empress or the ruler of the Empire. Nor were the Sith arts in her nature. She was powerful in the Force, but the Dark Side was not in her nature.
He and Padmé should have been firmer with both of them, but they were third and fourth in line. There had never been a reason to worry. Though they had thought again when Luke and Leia were nearly killed years ago, but their reaction had resulted in Ragnar and Reinhard, but they were currently only eight. They were so young. They were not ready for further training.
Vader also understood he was not growing younger. They were days he felt his every 44 years. Yes, he was not really that old, but he took off his right glove and touched his bald head. Thanks to his burns and old injuries, his body was failing more and more.
They were fewer things he was permitted to eat and he was taking more medications.
Vader was also wearing the respirators more. Right now, he was wearing the smaller one. It was fairly snug and comfortable, but he was starting to wear the larger, heavier one more. Vader knew he would eventually have to wear it all the time.
That or he would have to have another lung transplant.
Secretly, Vader wasn't sure if he really wanted to go through that again.
He exhaled and rubbed his eyes.
He was so tired.
Yes, he should have prepared Luke, Leia, and even Starkiller more.
At least Lord Starkiller had come through. His lover, Captain Juno Eclipse was with child.
While he had many Force sensitive disciples, Starkiller was one of the strongest in the Force. The boy, no, he was a man now. The young man was like a son to him. Vader wanted to have a reserve in place should Starkiller fall. It was also cheaper than cloning. Force sensitive clones were also said to go mad.
Then again, would a clone elope?
Vader heard soft footsteps.
Padmé...
Vader looked up and met her brown eyes as she entered the training chambers. It was only him. Vader had sent the droids and two Force trainees away. He was not in the mood for company. Truthfully not even his wife.
He was sitting on the crimson mat, leaning against the wall.
Vader had wondered when she would find him.
He was sitting down by the lifting machines. He had knocked down the machines and the weights.
Vader wondered if she noticed his bloody, swollen knuckles, or the hole in the wall.
Padmé went ahead and skipped any greeting, "You missed this morning's council meeting," She began.
Vader remained still.
"The conquest continues to go well."
Vader rubbed his injured hand. "Hm," He did not care. Besides, he already knew of Thrawn's victory. His victory meant almost sixty percent of the Outer Rim was now under their control. Vader supposed they should celebrate or make further plans, but he couldn't concentrate on such matters right now.
He even wondered if he would live to see the conquest complete, assuming it could be done.
Yes, the pirate attacks were becoming more frequent, but it also meant they were becoming more desperate.
Padmé said something else, but again, Vader did not care.
The same thoughts swirled around in his head.
How could this have happened?
His daughter...
His son...
Vader leaned his head against his uninjured hand.
Again, he had failed, failed as a father.
His victories would one day mean nothing if his legacies were...
"...you listening to me?"
"Hm?" Vader looked up.
"I'veHadENOUGH!" Padmé raised her voice.
"What?"
Padmé began pacing around, arms waving, "Damn it, Anakin, WHY? How?" The fury rolled off of Padmé in waves. "How could you treat Ruwee and Arabella that way? And Ruwee worst of all? Your son, your own blood? By the Force, why? WHY?" She screamed.
Vader sprang to his feet, "Because he is weak."
"You've bullied him for years. I should have done more about it years ago."
Vader felt he had done nothing wrong. Ruwee had needed someone to be firm with him. He pointed an accusing finger at her, "You're the one who coddled him." He then went on about Luke, Leia, and the line of succession. Specifically how Leia was no long a part of it and how that was going to change things.
Padmé's eyebrows made a v. "We are not taking Leia out of the succession. Even if something were to happen to..." A brief look of horror swept across her face. She obviously did want to think about such a thing. Especially when they had once come very close. "You don't give Ruwee enough credit."
"If something ever..." Vader shook his head, "If—if Luke departs without an heir..."
"You mean if you kill him," Padmé countered.
Vader just stared at her. "HowDareYou—"
"What am I supposed to think?" Padmé spat, "I haven't seen him in over two months. You took him away from me. No contact, nothing."
Vader was growing more frustrated and angry.
Had she forgotten?
"I told you it would be like this."
Padmé was not listening, "Now you're taking Leia away from me too."
Here we go, Vader thought. "You knew that I had to take Luke away for his training. It won't be forever." Besides that was why they agreed to raise Animé as their daughter. "And Leia...she has betrayed us. Spat in our face. Threatened matters of security. And Ruwee, he is no Emperor. He's a coward, weak, that's all he'll ever be." The Empire would not last a day under his command.
Padmé did not move, "I think Ruwee could surprise you."
"Hm, still weak," Vader grumbled. When would she give it up? She was always singing his praises. Again, coddling him, maybe after Luke came home, they should send Ruwee away. Maybe a far off university would help, but even if they kept his location secret, would Padmé allow it? No, she would not allow one of her children to go so far away again.
"Look, unless you need to tell me something." Her voice trailed off. "If something has happened..."
"No," Vader said. Not in that way.
Relief washed across Padmé's face, "Then I don't want to talk about the succession anymore. Let's focus on the matter at hand, Leia and the elopement. This marriage won't last, Anakin," She pointed out. She truly seemed to believe it.
Vader would have liked to believe such a thing, but even if and when the marriage ended it didn't change Leia's actions.
Padme continued on, "From what I know of this...Han Solo, he won't be happy. She won't be happy. They'll both grow bored. In time, we can make it look like it never happened." Just like Luke and Anime, though hopefully this marriage did not result in any offspring.
"Maybe," He said quietly. "...maybe."
"I don't want to fight you. Let her come home."
"No." Vader spat. "As long as she's married to that...that swindler, she is not welcome here. When she is ready to leave him, get down on her knees and beg for my forgiveness, I will reconsider."
Padmé began to chuckle. "You really think Leia would beg?"
Vader eyed her.
Padmé's laughter died down, "Do you not know her at all? Did she beg Jabba the Hutt? Those assassins that tried to kill her and Luke?"
Vader looked away.
"She's you. She's us."
Vader said nothing, but he looked even sadder.
Padmé then told him her plan. The plan that she hoped would work and the backup in the event the swindler did not take the bait.
"NO," Vader said firmly. Waving his arm in the air in protest. "Over my dead body."
"Coruscant is dangerous, filled with our enemies. Do you want your daughter to be killed?"
Leia could take care of herself. The past several weeks proved that.
"She's not my daughter," Vader said coldly. "Not anymore." Not since she married him. Gave him that look in the Throne Room. Threatened to reveal Animé's paternity.
Padmé swallowed. "You don't mean that, you're just...angry. I think that was her goal."
Vader was certain Padmé would go see Leia later. "Be sure to congratulate her. She succeeded," He said bitterly.
"At least she will be safe," Padme pointed out. "You won't have to see them."
Vader tried to think a way around her plan.
"Annie, please," Padmé said gently.
Vader sat there very still for several moments. "I have work to do." He would try, but he hoped to fall asleep.
"Anakin..."
He rose and pulled down his hood. "Keep them out of my sight," He stalked away.
Later that day...
Han Solo paced around the cell. He thought about banging on the holo shield again, but to what point? It was either sound proof or they were ignoring him.
They were probably ordered to not bother with him until they were given further orders on his trial or fate. Would there even be a "trial"? To his knowledge he had not broken any major laws. Though yes, marrying the daughter of the Emperor and Empress did him no favors, but it wasn't illegal. At least not to his knowledge. History and Government classes were never his strong suit.
Besides, Han had tried to perform his duty by informing his superiors about the Princess, it wasn't his fault they didn't believe him.
He was a citizen of the Galactic Empire. He had rights. Wasn't he supposed to get one communication? A lawyer? Something?
Han looked around. He swore the walls were closing in on him. Though it could have been fatigue and hunger. He had only been given some bread and a flask of water, but he had not touched them. He was afraid they might be drugged.
Han leaned against the wall. How long had he been here? He guessed it had only been a day or two at most, but it was hard to say. There was no chrono or a window to see the suns and stars.
Han groaned and ran his hands over his face and eyes. He plopped down on the small cot and tried to sleep. Though he kept tossing and turning, trying to get comfortable.
A little while later, he heard some noise.
Swoosh...
Han groaned.
"Hey!" Someone kicked the cot. "Wake up!"
"Wha-" Han opened his eyes though immediatly reopned upon seeing a bright light shining in his eyes. He groaned while covering his face.
"On your knees," The man ordered.
Han tried to open his eyes. What was happening?
The man was wearing black leather.
Han rubbed his eyes. Was that a lightsaber at his belt? He had seen Emperor Vader and a few his servants use the ancient relics.
"I said on your knees," The man ordered.
Han jerked and struggled, "I will no-"
"I would consider your next words very carefully," Said a woman. "They could be your last."
He had never heard it in person, but had heard many times on...the HoloNet?
Han looked up and his eyes grew. He dropped to his knees. Besides the Emperor, she was the only other being in the Galaxy he would bow to, "Empress Vader."
"Wait outside," Empress Padmé Amidala-Vader told Starkiller, though she preferred to call him by his name, Galen.
Galen looked almost furious, "With all due respect, Empress, I am not leaving you alone with him."
The man kneeling on the floor seemed confused. He looked around and gestured towards himself.
"Wait outside," She repeated in a harsher tone.
Reluctantly, Galen marched outside the cell.
"Mr. Solo," Padmé said coldly.
Han looked up, looking irritated. "Commander Solo," He corrected the Empress.
That was bold of him. "Not anymore, as of yesterday, your ranks, your titles, your ship, everything..." Padmé stated with a long, dramatic pause. "It's all gone."
Padmé angled her head. Studying him as he rose to his feet. His body language, the look on his face, and thinking back to his record.
Again, he was bold, confident, arrogant, probably one hell of a pilot too.
Yes, she could see Leia being attracted to this man. The question was what attracted him to Leia? Even still, did it matter? This marriage had to end, regardless of any attractions or feelings.
"Tell me, was it worth it?"
Han said nothing. He kept his expression blank.
Padmé got right to her point, the deal she had in mind. The deal she hoped and prayed he would take. "If you were to end this marriage, you can have it back. All of it. Your ship, ranks, titles, awards. I'll even make sure your debts are paid."
Clearly, Han did not trust her. He grinned, "That's...that is tempting," He admitted as he breathed out. "But I was thinking about leaving Imperial Intelligence anyway. I can find other work and credits. Besides, there's only one Leia."
Padmé knew it would not be so simple, "So you're content with losing your ship, career, and livelihood?" What would it take? Were they going to have make out a blank bank note?
Han remained silent.
It was time for different tactic. "Wouldn't be the first time. Would it?"
Han frowned.
"Just like back on Corellia and Mimban." Corellia was where young Han had grown up. He had grown up in an orphanage, pirates, and eventaully enrolled in the Imperial Academy. Mimban was where he landed in hot water after defending his Wookiee first mate.
They weren't exactly fond memories.
Ah, there the frustration, the anger, now that he was exposed. "What do you want?" He asked bitterly.
"An annulment," Padmé simply replied.
"Look uh, your Highness, it's not happening." He shook his head.
Padmé went for a different approach, "I know my daughter. I've known her far longer than you. In weeks she'll grow unhappy and move onto to something else. To someone else." So she hoped.
Though she had certainly never imagined Leia eloping. Looking back she supposed she should have. Though if she had thought any of her children might elope, it would have been Arabella or given his history, Luke.
Han remained unconvinced, "You underestimate her."
Padmé could not think of a response. He was not wrong. "Perhaps, I did," Empress Vader quietly said. It was the first time she had let her regal mask down.
They should have done more. At first, they thought with time, Leia would come home. They had shut off her funds and all Coruscanti police and security were looking for her. But the hours turned into days, the days turned into weeks.
While he was unable to pinpoint her location, Vader knew with his meditations that she was not hurt.
While she was nervous, Padmé thought time and distance would give Leia perspective. Never in a million years did she imagine she would come home married. Though again, she should have. She should have known she would pull something extraordinary to end her betrothal.
"You know she'll never admit it, but she talked about you guys all the time."
That was hardly reassuring. Well intended perhaps, but Padmé could only imagine how much Leia must have complained about her life and family. Padmé" pursed her lips together, "Oh, I have no doubt."
Han seemed to understand her doubts. "Wasn't all bad things."
Han probably thought living in a Palace made everything seem grand. Though it would certainly beat an orphanage. "Hm, I'm also certain you're now privy to many security matters." She could only imagine what Leia might have told him. The secret entrances and exits of the Palace, passcodes, Animé's parentage, Senate business. The list was endless. They had to be careful, otherwise this man could ruin their lives. He could even sell such information to their enemies and terrorists.
Han gestured towards to himself. A look that said, who? Me?
If Padmé was not so weary and tired, she may have found him amusing.
"Give your daughter some credit. Besides, listening to her talk, I was kind of jealous."
"No doubt living a Palace beats an orphanage."
Han seemed surprised, "Wh—" Realization seemed to dawn on him. "No, what I meant is some of us would have given anything for protective parents and brothers and sisters to drive us crazy," Han added with a smile.
Padmé was stunned, maybe she was crazy, but he seemed sincere to her. While she would never say this aloud, she could not help but think, why couldn't he be a Tarkin? That would solve so many of their problems right now. Could he be a distant cousin perhaps? She filed that thought away for later. She would have someone check his family history and genealogy.
"Alright, Han Solo," Padmé knew she was probably going to regret this, but she saw no other way. "I want you to listen to me very carefully..."
The next day...
Viceroy and Senator Bail Organa sat down in his living area enjoying a cup of caf and this morning's HoloNews. Besides the two young women across the hall talking and giggling during the night, it had been a peaceful end of the week.
"Senator," Carlist Rieekan rushed in.
"Yes?" What was wrong?
Rieekan's eyes were widened, "Uh, my Lord, Empress Vader is here."
While Bail had been expecting a comm or visit, he still found himself surprised. "Send her in at once," He nodded. On second thought, he wasn't dressed for the Empress. He was still in his robe and sleeping pants. He wished she had comm'd, but feared a certain someone might runaway again.
Rieekan and two of the guards escorted them in.
"Leave us," Bail said with a nod.
Confused, the guards and Reieekan slowly disappeared.
Empress Vader stalked in the room. She wore black gown with green and blue jewels and beads. Along with a beatiful red headpiece. She was accompanied by Lord Starkiller and one lone Red Guard. Normally she had a larger entourage, but he sensed she wanted to keep this as quiet as possible.
"Empress," Bail knelt his head. Trying to give a warm smile.
She didn't seem to notice the sleeping clothes, which he was grateful for.
"Senator," The Empress cut right to the chase. "I believe you have something of mine."
"Yes, I considered contacting you, but I had a feeling you already knew." Bail nodded, "She arrived about two days ago."
She hesitated, "How much has she told you?"
"Little," Bail sipped his caf, "But I noticed her left hand." He gestured towards his own ring finger.
"I see," The Empress seemed to consider something.
"I have not told anyone she's here," Bail said reassuringly. "Few of my staff know and those that do were told to remain silent. To my knowledge, none of them saw." Once more gestured towards his ring finger.
"Thank you," She nodded. "I'd also like to speak with Princess Winter."
Normally Bail would not feel comfortable with the Emperor or Empress speaking with his child and heir, but he understood she wanted to know how much she knew. "Very well," He nodded and turned his head to the hallway, "TwoVee," He called out.
The droid rolled down the hallway, "Yes, my Lord?"
"I need to speak with Princess Winter."
TwoVee saw that they had visitors, "Yes, my Lord, give me about thirty-five standard mi—"
"No, TwoVee, now."
"Oh, very well, my Lord." The personal attendant droid rolled down the hall.
Moments later, Princess Winter walked into the living area. "Yes, Father? Oh..." She saw the Empress. "Your Royal Imperial Highness," She lowered her head.
Empress Vader greeted the Princess of Alderaan. Then she asked, "Princess Winter, I know Princess Leia is here. I also know that she has told you a great deal."
Winter said nothing, but looked worried.
Bail put a hand on her shoulder.
"You're not in any trouble." The Empress assured her. "Have you told anyone about Leia?" Meaning her location or marital status.
"No, Your Highness," Winter answered at once.
The Empress seemed satisfied with the reply. "Princess Winter," She looked at both her and Bail. "I will not insult you or your father's intelligence by asking you to keep what Leia has told you in confidence."
"Of course, Empress," Winter said very quietly.
"Please do this for me and the Empire and it will not go unnoticed." Meaning she would be rewarded.
Winter did not seem to know what to make of the last part.
She turned to her father, who felt a little uncomfortable.
"Nothing will be said outside these walls," Bail said reassuringly. "I shall wipe the recording devices, droids, and any other devices your Highness asks."
"That would be appreciated." She nodded, "Now, I need to see her."
Bail gestured with his head. "She's down the hall, second door on the right."
The Red Guard stood by the door while Starkiller followed the Empress.
Leia wondered what Bail Organa wanted with Winter. She wondered if they were going home to Alderaan. She loved to visit the planet, but did not want to leave Coruscant without Han. Even having news of his location or any information would be comforting.
The door creeked open.
Leia turned, "Mom?"
Empress Padmé Amidala-Vader greeted Leia with an expressionless face, "Hello Leia."
Galen, better known as Starkiller was behind her, waiting outside the door. He must have been serving as her bodyguard.
Padmé shut the door.
"I should have known." Leia said under her breath and crossed her arms, "Bail comm'd you."
"No, Leia, we've had eyes on you since you left the Palace."
Leia smirked, "Don't want to make the same mistake twice." She wondered where this conversation would go? "Are you here to throw me out of the Plaza?" Father said she was banished from all of Imperial Plaza, the Organas' apartment was still inside the plaza, but Leia did not know where else to go. There were few beings she currently trusted, since most beings she knew worked for her parents. Since Bail was more vocal against Imperial policy, she felt safer coming here.
Padmé frowned, "No," Not yet anyway. "I am here to talk."
"Oh, so you want to talk," Leia said in a very childish tone.
"Leia," She was using a very deep, serious tone. "Choose your next words very carefully, you're on very thin ice. This may be your last chance," Padmé warned.
"Fine," Leia sat down on Winter's blue bedspread.
Padmé remained standing, "I've spoken with your Father and—"
"I am not going home," Leia crossed her arms.
"Yes," Padmé said as gently as she could muster. "You will."
Leia shook her head, "Did you not hear Father?"
"Yes, we've discussed the matter," Padmé began.
Leia raised a brow.
What was Mother up to?
Hope entranced Leia's eyes, "Has he agreed to restore my titles?" Not to mention her bank accounts, jewels, and dresses, though the titles stung most of all.
"No," Padmé replied.
Leia got up, "Then why don't you?" She asked her mother. "Last time I checked the Constitution, you also have the power to restore my titles." Her tone asked why she was making herself subservient to Father? "Are you not equals?"
"True," Padmé took a few paces around the room. "I could, but then your Father will only take them away again." Which would lead to further arguments between them. "I would much rather spend my time and energy persuading him to restore them himself." She hoped. Her husband a very stubborn man. "Give me time. Give him time." She hoped to make him see reason. She also hoped he would go to Leia, but so far she wasn't having any luck on that front.
Leia scowled.
Padmé smiled, she looked almost amused.
"What?" Leia grew irritated.
Padmé continued to smile, almost laugh, "Nothing, you reminded me of...oh, nevermind." She cleared her throat. "Anyway, he has agreed to let you come back to the Palace. I certainly wouldn't attend meetings or public events just yet, but you can at least come home. Security will be able to guard you far better there." That was probably how she convinced him.
It didn't matter, Leia would not take the bait, "I will not." She shook her head, "Not without Han. I will—"
Padmé glared at her daughter, "WillYouPleaseShutUpAndListenToMeForOnceInYourLife?"
Leia was shocked at her mother's tone. How dare she speak to her like that?
Padmé opened her mouth before Leia could, "You and Han will share an apartment in the Palace. Though it would be best if Han avoids your Father. Both of you," She added.
Leia smiled at her mother. Was she giving in? It seems she had won the battle.
Padmé's hardened gaze did not lighten. "Don't misunderstand, I am not happy about this. You could have handled this far better."
How? "Oh please, you two would have dragged me to Hapes kicking and screaming. Did Father ever bring up our conversation on how I did not want to marry Isolder?" She doubted it.
"Yes," Padmé was clearly doing her best to keep calm, "Yes, we had discussed it at great length. I was trying to find an alternative bride and ruler to Hapes."
Leia raised a brow. Had she really?
"Now that you..." Her mother's voice trailed off. "You've made a mess of promised alliance, you're going to help me fix it." If at all possible.
Leia understood what her mother was really saying.
It would serve as Leia's chance to redeem herself.
Leia considered all this. Who could possibly equal the eldest daughter of the Emperor and Empress? Anyone less they would see as an insult. Unless they could fast track Arabella into a political wizard, but that didn't seem likely.
"Yes, Mother," Leia answered.
"For now, stay out of trouble." Padmé seemed to consider her next carefully. "I also trust you're using birth control." She suddenly seemed very worried.
Leia flushed with embarrassment and anger, "Oh, Mom, please!" She sounded and felt horrified. "I'm not going to pull a Luke." Did they not know her at all? She was far more responsible than that. "Nor are we ready for that!" While she wanted children someday and knew she needed to further the family line, she was far from ready to become a mother. She understood watching her parents with Animé and the twins that children were a lot of work.
Padmé thanked the gods of Naboo.
"As for your Father, let me deal with him." He will forgive you. Right now, he is just angry. You wounded his pride. He still sees you as a little girl that he loves and adores."
"Maybe, but I won't forgive him," Leia said cooly. The way he yelled like that and in front of Ruwee, Arabella, Rex, the guards, and everyone. "He humiliated me," She said through clenched teeth. Tears were threatening to leak, but she held them back.
Leia did not like the look on her mother's face. She looked like she about to say something, but decided against it. "Pack your things, I'll wait outside."
Shortly...
Leia did not seem too impressed, but what did she expect? This wasn't a vacation.
They were standing in the living area. The apartment was pretty plain and bland. White and grey walls, floors, and rugs. A couch, a few chairs, one fresher, a full sized bed, and a small kitchenette.
"You will get one droid and one handmaiden."
"No handmaidens," Leia said sharply.
Her reaction towards the handmaiden did not surprise Padmé. She knew Leia stopped trusting the handmaidens years ago. She supposed she had used them as spies far too many times. Leia had probably picked up on this during her Senate internships. Padmé had considered placing cameras and listening devices in the apartment, but again, Leia would know better. Maybe inside the droid, but Leia might still discover said device.
"Oh, and there's one more thing."
Leia raised a brow.
Then she heard footsteps.
A man walked through the bedroom door, stopped and leaned against the door frame.
"Han," Leia ran to him.
They embraced, wrapping their arms tightly around one another.
As she exited the apartment, Padmé hoped she would not regret this.
The next morning...
Grand Vizier Mas Amedda and Empress Vader were preparing the day's business.
Padmé scrolled through today's visitors and courtiers. "I'd rather meet with her first," Get said meeting over with is what she really meant.
Mas understood this, "Yes, your Highness." He shuffled the paperwork around.
The black and red curtain lifted and the pair heard familiar boot-steps.
"My Lord and Emperor," The Chagrian lowered his head. "We...I was not expecting you," He said rather clumsily while clearing his throat.
Padmé and Vader just stared at one another.
Amedda saw the look, "We'll leave you alone." He turned and waved his staff.
The secretaries rose from their chairs and left. Followed by the guards and cleaning droids. Only the Red Guards remained.
"Thank you, Mas," Padmé leaned over as Vader sat in his Throne.
"I'm glad you're here," Padmé said warmly. She hesitated and the tension filled the room. "I don't want to fight you...or yell."
"I don't either," Vader replied as he leaned back.
"I'm sorry," Padmé went first.
"You weren't wrong," Vader said. "I'm sorry too."
Padmé wondered if he had spoken with Ruwee and Arabella, but she doubted he had.
Vader's cheek leaned against his fist. "What if they don't...grow tired of one another? What if your plan fails?" He leaned forward in the Throne.
Padmé considered this, "I don't know, yet. We'll figure it out."
Vader breathed, "Very well." He paused as he looked down at his boots. "And I have spoken with Arabella and Ruwee," He added.
Padmé's eyes widened, "Did you?" She hoped it had gone well.
"Yes," Vader seemed unsure how to respond, "They seem better."
Padmé imagined Arabella was better. She was hopefully back to her cheerful self, but Ruwee...she did not know. She would speak with them later tonight or whenever they finished today's business. The idea of Ruwee attending university was looking more and more appealing.
Silence befell the room.
"Are we better?" Vader sounded nervous.
Padmé looked away, "I think we need to work on some things."
Despite the small respirator covering his mouth, Vader had clearly frowned.
"But we can do it," Padmé's pinky and ring finger reached for Vader's fingers. "We'll make it."
Vader looked up at her.
Padmé nodded.
"Mas!" Vader called out. "Let us begin!"
The double doors opened and the day's first courtiers filed in.
I had a hard time deciding a name for this chapter.
Trivia: Reinhard and Ragnar are eight this chapter, they were six at the beginning of the story. So about two years have passed. I've sometimes been vague with time, so I thought I should make things clearer. Vader is also 44, I believe I've done the math right.
Next chapter and coming up: Small time jump, graduation ceremony, that's all I'm going to say. ;D So I expect some long chapters or I may divide them, but they're very, very juicy! I'm super excited! ;D
The last scene with Vader and Padmé was last minute. I felt if they was a time jump next chapter, one should have one more Vader/Padmé scene and see where their relationship was at with everything that had occurred.
Please leave a review. Also stay safe out there and bless you all.
