…
Crawling. Unstable, sinking instead of supporting. Breaking through the barrier. Above it, heavy. Unseen force pushing downwards. Pressure of a different kind.
Dark. Glowing light from afar.
Things floating above in the absence of substance. Humming.
Force not as noticeable now. Higher and higher, up to the objects. They could be destroyed.
Something else, much larger. Coming closer, flying closer.
It screeched. Pain. It tore and stabbed. Its body blocking sight.
It must be destroyed. Reaching, swiping, removing it.
The thing came back. Another swipe, hitting one of the floating objects.
A high-pitched noise.
Someone was screaming. Amara jerked awake at the sound. She sat up and adjusted the harness. When had she fallen asleep?
The scream had come from a phone in Sam's hand. Everyone was still sitting shoulder to shoulder, squeezing even closer to view the tiny device. The broadcast sounded Japanese.
"Did you see that? It just took out a helicopter full of people," Rick said, fixing his glasses.
Mi Sun had a deep frown on her face. "Mothra isn't going to stand a chance on her own. That thing looks bigger than Godzilla."
"They're saying its over four hundred feet," Whyley leaned in closer. "They're calling it Destroyoah."
"Destroyer?" Amara undid the harness and switched seats to the empty one beside Rick. The small video was fuzzy on the screen. Flashes of a red monster walking inland. It was swiping at Mothra who flew around in the air too fast for it to land a hit.
"Do you think it can actually fly?"
"There's no way. It's way too heavy for those wings."
"Probably a side effect of combining to anatomically different species."
"Fly? It can barely walk!"
"We'll be landing in five minutes!" Called the pilot.
Following everyone's lead, Amara strapped herself into the new seat. "Wait, isn't Rodan in Japan? Will he fight it with Mothra?"
Rick shook his head. "Unlikely, unless Godzilla calls him. Outpost 91 is monitoring his vitals. Looks like he's still recovering."
"Outpost 91…Ah, what about the titan there? Orochi, was it?" Mi Sun asked, looking between Sam and Rick.
That's right. There was a titan right in Japan. The eight headed serpent from Japanese mythology. There wasn't much news about it compared to the other titans since it didn't do much damage beyond causing a rockslide or something.
Whyley leaned out past Sam to address her. "Orochi is partially fused to Mount Fuji. It's completely immobile."
There was a strange feeling in her gut. The Osprey must have been descending. Too bad there weren't any windows.
To think they were landing near the thing displayed on the screen. Would it chase her if it realized she was there?
When would Godzilla arrive? He felt so far away. Somewhere deep under the ocean. It was almost…uncomfortable to be so far.
One by one they climbed out of the aircraft onto the helicopter pad. They were on top of a building maybe four stories high. There was another Monarch marked Osprey further over, but no one in sight.
The night was illuminated by streetlights, but the windows of buildings were nothing more than black squares against glowing concrete. It was quiet. Even the wind was calm and the temperature was mild. Just enough of a chill to prick at her skin, causing the hairs to stand on end.
She met Mi Sun's eyes. "Are we in the right place?"
"I believe it's on the other side of the Tokyo Bay." She looked around. "Wherever that is."
Rumbling of distant engines echoed off the buildings. Amara turned back just as five jets flew overhead in formation.
They passed faster than the eye could see, over the metropolitan skyline. A sudden gust of air blew her hair in front of her face. At the same moment, explosions rocked the earth and lit up the sky past the wall of buildings.
Not a second later, a series of ear-splitting pops rattled the air. Then, an inhuman sound. Deeper than a fog horn sounding from a ship out of sight, rumbling like thunder that shook the windows long after the flash of lightning.
The planes circled back and disappeared into the night sky.
Amara took her hands off her ears, but the air was still muffled around her. Whyley was yelling something, but the words were too faint to make out.
It was hot. Too hot. Like the air was burning around her. Pain radiated through her skull, pounding with every heartbeat. The rooftop disappeared and everything was smoke and fire.
Bright, burning. The void of air thick and black, searing on the inside.
The objects were too fast to catch. Too high to reach.
The other creature would come back. Cause more pain.
Another pain. The unseen pull. The source was near.
Where?
"Amara, snap out of it!"
A hand slapped her cheek. Back on the roof, Whyley and Mi Sun were in front of her with matching faces of concern and confusion.
Mi Sun recoiled her hand. "You looked possessed. Was it talking to you?"
"No, no, not talking…" It knew she was here. Whenever she connected to it, it was like sending it a signal to her exact location. It would be looking for her, if it knew why or not. She would lead it straight to them. To Mi Sun and Whyley. To Rick, Sam.
"It's upset. I feel its pain."
"Mi Sun, Amara." A female voice called. "Up here!"
Up on the higher part of the roof was Ilene who waved at them. Ling was at her side. Rick and Sam were already ascending the ladder up to them.
Amara climbed the few rungs behind Mi Sun, while Whyley followed her.
"Nice to see you guys finally made it." Ilene greeted, her eyes turning to Whyley. "And who's this?"
Everyone gathered in a semicircle facing out towards the direction of the explosion.
"Lieutenant Whyley, UNTDA."
"Defence Alliance? Good, where's your radio? It would be best if we could stay in direct contact with the military."
While Whyley answered and shuffled around in his bag for the radio, Amara stepped back from the group and took out her phone.
She pulled up a map of the location. Tokyo Bay was only a few kilometers away, stretching inland close to were the titan currently was. Perhaps keeping it near the water was her best bet. The further inland it came, the more destruction it would cause.
Plus, Godzilla would come from the water.
There wasn't going to be much time to get away from them before they noticed her absence. Whyley seemed to have the groups attention at the moment, so it was as good a time as any.
Quietly, she backed away from the group and climbed down the ladder and through the doors into the hospital.
It was eerily silent inside. The only noise was the rhythmic tapping of her shoes on the white linoleum. Any minute they could notice her absence. Any minute a monster could smash through the building and crush her.
She broke into a jog. The hallways were like a maze, but every level she went down was a step in the right direction. The signs were in Japanese, only the familiar symbols finally guided her out.
As the glass doors slid closed behind her, another wave of jets shot across the sky. She covered her ears, but the noise still vibrated through her skull. Loud booms of dropped bombs followed, unseen, but just as loud as the earth shook.
Another roar, deep and unnatural as her head pounded from behind her eyes and her skin burned with fire.
She leaned against the wall until the pain began to dissipate. Once the wave of nausea passed, she opened her eyes.
Unlike Los Angeles, Tokyo resembled a ghost town more than an apocalyptic city. No cars abandoned in the middle of the street, only parked ones that owners didn't have time to pick up. Among them was a bicycle laying on the sidewalk.
She went over to it, picking it up. It was a little big, but it looked fine otherwise. She hoisted herself on and pedaled in the direction of the bay.
The city was more like a maze of streets between walls of tall buildings. She stopped, pulling her phone out. She was still blocks away, but was getting closer.
Where was the titan though? The towering buildings blocked any view beyond the street. At any corner, she could come face to face with it. Was it coming towards her now?
Thinking about it wouldn't help. Thinking about it only enhanced the connection and would draw it to her faster than it already was.
"Just think about Godzilla and the bay," she muttered to herself. "Godzilla and the bay."
She started to pedal. Had anyone noticed her disappearance yet? What were they doing now? Probably coming up with a much better plan than hers, no doubt.
Would they try the same thing that they did to Godzilla? Did they already and fail? Would they bomb the entire city?
Either way, she was doing her part. Keeping the titan away from civilization was something that only she could do. And she would do it. For Mi Sun, for Whyley, for Tao, for Japan.
And then Godzilla would kill it…for her?
What a weird concept.
Something caught her eye from down an adjacent street. Fluorescent lights lit up the lingering shadow of early dawn. It resembled the makeshift base the military had set up in Costa Rica.
Was it the UNTDA again, or some other special forces unit unfortunate enough to be dispatched to fight an unknown titan?
A pop rang out, like a firework. Then more followed. No, not fireworks, gunshots. Yelling too. Loud but indistinguishable.
Before a stray bullet could hit her, she sped through the intersection and out of line of sight with the base. What the hell was going on? Why would there be shooting?
The hum of an engine brought her attention back in front of her, only to squeeze the brakes and swerve the bike out of the way of an oncoming SUV. The sudden change in momentum sent her over and onto the asphalt of the road. She let out a squawk of pain as her shoulder hit first, then her head. The bike landed on top of her leg.
The vehicle stopped and a door opened and closed while she pushed the bike off. Footsteps clicked against the road, and the vehicle drove off.
"Miss Rey, what a surprise to see you here."
That voice. Why him, of all people?
When she sat up, she met his soulless eye, the other was covered by an eyepatch. The skin around it was pink and raw, shrivelled like the surface of a prune.
It seemed Jonah didn't make it out of Costa Rica unscathed.
Jets passed overhead, gunshots echoed through the streets, distant yelling.
"Last time we met, half my men died."
"You were the one that shot him. What did you expect would happen?"
He clicked his tongue. "I would expect you rein him in before he destroyed my base."
Amara stood. "How many times do I have to tell you," she raised her voice, "I can't control him."
"Now now, no need to yell. It's all in the past now." Jonah pulled a gun from the side of his belt.
"Wait, what are you doing?"
"Seeing exactly how deep your connection runs."
He raised the gun, pointing it at her head.
The rest of the world disappeared around the barrel. It stared her in the eye, cold and black, more frightening than Godzilla ever was.
What had she done to deserve this? She tried time and time again to do the right thing, even if it never worked out. She had tried.
She closed her eyes and turned her head away. "It's…not fair."
"Life's not fair."
The sound of quick footsteps rang above the drone of distant jets. Amara opened her eyes and in a split second, Mi Sun came out from Jonah's blind spot and kicked the gun out of his hand before he could react. It skidded across the pavement and out of sight.
He grunted and turned on Mi Sun, back handing her. She dropped to the ground.
"Mi Sun!"
How dare he?
Jonah scowled down at Mi Sun as if she was nothing more than an inconvenience to him. "How quaint." He looked back up. "Anymore friends you'd care to introduce?"
How could he be so nonchalant about what he just did? Mi Sun was unconscious and he was completely unaffected? He was the monster!
She let out a cry and charged him.
This time, he didn't have the chance to make another remark.
He got into a fighting stance just as she reached him. He wound up a punch. Predictable. She took a sidestep last second and landed a jab to his stomach.
He recoiled, but recovered quickly, going for another punch. She swung her arm up just in time to take the brunt of it while using the other to land another jab to his face.
This time he staggered backward, wiping the blood from his nose. He ripped off the eye patch, revealing more burned skin and a misshapen eye.
Her arm radiated in pain. He was slow, but packed a lot of power. One hit to the head and she would be out. Her nails dug into her palms as she squeezed her fists. She had wiped that smug look off his face at least.
He marched towards her, a deadly frown formed on his lips.
This time he grabbed at her shirt. His short nails scratched at her skin as she leaned back. He pulled her closer to him. Fabric tared, but she went for the collar of his own jacket. A game of speed was one he wasn't going to win.
She kneed him in the stomach, making him double over. Then using the same leg, she planted her foot on his waist and dropped to the ground, pulling up over her with her leg and tossing him to the asphalt onto his back.
She jumped back up while he withered. Her muscles burned, yet she walked over to him. He wasn't going to get away. He didn't deserve any sympathy, especially not hers. He was an evil old man.
She went to punch him while he was still down, but he grabbed her ankle as she took a step and pulled it forward. She fell hard on her tailbone. Pain shot up through her spine and down her legs.
He crawled over to her, eyes gleaming with maniacal excitement. At the last second, she threw her leg out and kicked him in the jaw. Blood splattered the pavement.
Somehow, he recovered before she could move. He got on top of her, hands wrapping around her throat.
Using her legs and arms, she wriggled from his tight grasp, just managing to keep his hands from tightening around her neck. He was not going to choke her to death. She would kill him before that happened.
She maneuvered her leg into position and brought it up as hard as she could and at the same time, sacrificed a hand to punch him in the mangled eye. The double hit was enough to slack his grip for a second. But that was all she needed.
She broke out and crawled away, kicking him as she did.
Just as she got onto her knees, an arm wrapped around her neck. It was strong, pulling her up to her feet.
One of his soldiers? Where had they come from?
Jonah took his time getting up. "Ah, Whyley, Impeccable timing." He smiled an empty smile. "Shoot her."
What? How could he do this? He wasn't supposed to be on Jonah's side, he was on hers!
Jonah had to be lying, but she couldn't turn her head to see who was holding her. Why Whyley, why? After everything.
Pressure against her head. Cold and solid. She struggled against the arm across her neck. Her arms shook from the fatigue. Her fingers refused to grab. There was no escape this time.
This wasn't how it was supposed to be. Not how it was supposed to end. They were friends. She stood up for him, defended him. All for nothing. He would kill her and Godzilla.
It had all been a lie.
She squeezed her eyes shut to the fire and chaos.
Whyley's arm removed itself from her neck and a hand was pressed against her face, coving her eyes.
A shot rang out.
…
A shout of pain bounced off the buildings. Whyley's hand came off her face and his arm loosened around her neck. She opened her eyes to Jonah bent over clutching his thigh. Blood seeped out of a hole in his pants over his knee.
Her legs gave out and she fell back onto the road.
"I'm done falling for your lies." Came Whyley's voice from behind her.
Jonah hissed. "When have I lied?"
"You want Godzilla dead. You don't care about balance or the natural order." Whyley stepped out in front of her. "All you want is to end humanity and you don't care who you use to accomplish that."
The ground shook. A distant car alarm went off.
Jonah hopped back and sat against the hood of an abandoned vehicle. "It seems I'm the only one not swayed by petty peer pressure. Even Godzilla has been compromised." His eyes slid to Amara.
Whyley went over to Mi Sun. She looked woozy as he gently helped her up, slinging her arm over his shoulder. He stumbled when another crash made the buildings quake.
"Come on, Amara, we need to go," he said when he made it back to her with Mi Sun in tow.
"You're going back to the hospital?" Amara asked, her eyes looking up to his.
He nodded and held out his free hand to her. She accepted it, and he hoisted her up.
"That's right, run, run away, but there's nowhere to go."
Amara let go of Whyley's hand and went over to the bicycle, walking it over to him and Mi Sun.
They walked back west towards the hospital, while Jonah remained.
Mi Sun blinked and looked over to her. "You okay, Amara?"
She coughed, thick dust floating through the air and tickling her throat. "I'm fine, how are you?"
"Can't believe that asshole slapped me. You kicked his ass in my honor, I hope?"
"Of course, I did. Whyley finished him off though."
She gave a slow blink and raised an eyebrow. "Didn't finish him off enough in my opinion."
Whyley let out an amused huff. "Sorry to disappoint."
The earth shook more violently than before. All three of them spun around just in time to see a plume of dust were a building once stood not even a block from where Jonah was.
The dust diffused, slowly settling, revealing a dark silhouette larger than any building. It made a noise, louder and deeper than any other. As it sounded, it only grew lower. It resonated in her bones and rattled her teeth.
"We need to move," Whyley said, not moving.
"Where'd Mothra go?" Mi Sun asked, rather despondently.
Amara pushed him and Mi Sun forward. "Go go go!"
Once they started moving, they didn't stop. Amara remained on the spot though, turning back to the titan.
This was it. Destroyer found her. Like Godzilla, it hurt less with it so near.
Red peeked through the dust. More and more. It wasn't scale though. It was smooth, like plates of armor… like a crab.
Plates jutted out of the sides of its head, making its skull wider than it was tall. Boney spikes jutted out from every joint. Then there were teeth. Not just in its mouth, but all around it, raw and bloody at the bases.
Was this the product of intelligent design?
It stood there, looking down at the ground, almost intently with yellow eyes. What was it staring at?
She mounted the bike, ready for it to notice her, but it was fixated with whatever was below it.
Wait.
Metal glinted through the last of the dust. A tiny figure on the hood of a car. It was looking at Jonah.
"Hey Jonah, I forgot to tell you something!" her voice bounced down the street. "I can control your monster too!"
The monster spread massive red wings that blocked out the sky and took a step forward. The car disappeared under its foot.
Then it looked back up at her.
Well shit. Whatever cockiness that filled her a second ago completely disappeared. Her stomach dropped as it made eye contact. It knew exactly who she was.
Her foot slipped off the pedal. It roared, rearing its head.
A wall of water came out of nowhere and crashed up against it, cutting off the horrible noise.
Water flooded the street and rained down onto her. Godzilla finally made it.
…
Coming up, the grand finale: Godzilla Vs. Destoroyah
I'm so excited!
