Tomorrow', what a funny word.
Kazuma increase his stride length, hoping to reach the oblivious woman who would surely met certain death. He could do something! All he had to do was push his body to its absolute limit.
I thought I would always have tomorrow. That if I failed today, then I could succeed tomorrow.
The truck was trying to stop, the grinding of rubber on asphalt made Kazuma cringe. Tire debris flew everywhere like bullets, bystanders looked on helplessly, already casting a pray for the woman. But she wouldn't die, because he could do something!
I became content with that exact thought and my grades dropped to the point where I couldn't graduate, I became a pathetic person and tomorrow didn't look so bright- not anymore.
The woman turned her head to the truck, her earphones vibrating as hardcore rock blasted for all to hear. Kazuma couldn't see her expression, maybe she was feeling regret, maybe shock or hopelessness, but that wouldn't matter in a couple of seconds. He could save her, he would save her!
I became an outcast and a NEET with no future. I begun to hate myself with a passion, for I knew I was useless.
He outstretched his had, his calves aching from the speed he been running from. He pushed, using his nonexistent muscles to move the woman out if the trucks way. The woman had turned around just in time to see his face. Her beautiful onyx eyes widened in shock, her hair flying in the wind like a plastic bag tied to a stick. It wasn't because he was trading his life for hers, but that he was smiling. His perfect teeth shone through the darkness of despair that was wallowing in the woman's heart.
I may have failed, but I'll give my 'tomorrow' willing- I just hope they succeed where I failed.
His eyes showed unshed tears, his life of failure passing through his minds eyes, but he smiled harder and particularly screamed his final words. The words of a failure "Be the best you can be!" His eyes were closed shut, as if not wanting to see the final moments of his life. The tears escaped their dam, his cheeks wet, but as the truck smashed into him, his smile didn't falter.
Kazuma died instantly, the impact crushing his vital organs, seconds later, the vehicle halted to a complete. As the man removed himself form the cockpit of the truck, the woman couldn't help but look at the body of her saviour. His bones were broken and twisted at odd angles, his face bloodied and his clothes torn. She cried, tears of horror and guilt left her onyx orbs. The guilt of living and ultimately the guilt of feeling safe.
Kazuma opened his eyes to be greeted with a sea of black. It reminded him of the darkness of the night. He had heard that the term for this effect was 'abyss', the word meaning an endless chasm. But he could be wrong though, english wasn't his best subject. The hikikomori rubbed the bridge of his nose as he quickly disregarded his confusion to stand on his own two feet. He quickly assessed his environment thoroughly, only to find that he wasn't alone. A woman of divine beauty sat upon a polished-down stone throne. Her posture straight, dignified and full of authority. Her light blue hair was long and stylised, but yet her blue eyes resembled that of water, like the gently waves of the sea. Her aura was that of a strong goddess, he felt like he couldn't breath! That he had been swallowed by icy depths of the ocean.
Stopping his train of thought, Kazuma raised a hand to his throat, having realised that he hasn't breathed in oxygen since he came to the abyss. He quickly readjusted the hand to his chest, where his heart should be beating strongly. However, he felt no heart beat and memories quickly flooded his brain. The truck, the woman and his ultimate sacrifice. Questions were thrown across his head like baseball pitchers, mainly concerning the woman and his parents. Although the brief thought if his death being uploaded to the internet was a great comfort.
"Don't worry, Akane Annaishi survived." The goddess spoke, her voice smooth like velvet. Her blue eyes saw his inevitable confusion and quickly explained "Akane was the woman you saved. She'll finish university at the top o her class and become a famous analyst, living a life full of friendship and financial success." She looked uninterested, as if she had seen this type of thing day after day. But yet, this went unnoticed by Kazuma, in disbelief at his success. This long forgotten warmth resided in his soul. After his disbelief was quelled, the hikikimori had quickly came to the conclusion that the goddess could read her thoughts. Was that an omnipotent power, or did they just work in the afterlife, there were myths of gods and goddess sinking into the mortal realm.
"Ahem," the goddess coughed into her hand and having regained his attention, she continued "My name is Aqua, the goddess of water and as you can clearly see, you are in-between the mortal realm and heaven. This is a place where the dead come before transitioning," Kazuma nodded his head in understanding, he however, choose to remain quite, allowing Aqua to speak. "You have two options to choose from. The first is that you can reincarnate back into your world and start from square one, however, no memories or skills obtained in your life will be carried over. The seconded option is that you proceed into heaven." The hikikomori had heard of stories of pearly white gates and beautiful angels, which in all honesty, didn't sound so bad.
"Unfortunately, heaven isn't the best place to be, as you do not have physical body, meaning you cannot do anything sexual. There are also no video games or manga, meaning that you can only bask in the sunlight." Clutching his best, Kazuma felt actual pain at his lacklustre options, as if imagining his quick boredom, are those two really my only options? "Of course, that wouldn't be any fun... so I've pulled a few strings and allowed you to gain a third option."
"Pardon?" He looked at Aqua with hope, that he wouldn't have to be bored for the rest of eternity. The goddess smiled, as if a fisherman looking at their caught prey "Your third option is by far the better and requires your certain expertise," her blue eyes looked upon Kazuma's confused expression, before scoffing in amusement. "You'll be sent to another world with one purpose, to slay the demon king."
It took a few seconds before the hikikomori processed the information, his mouth opened and he displayed his thoughts "I'll die! The demon king would be incredibly strong!" Laughter filled the abyss and Kazuma could only star wide eyed at the goddess in front of him. Was she mocking him? Is it his stupidity or was it his lack of bravery that amused her so? After she composed herself, she spoke once more.
"Of course, defeating a demon king without any help is in itself impossible... but the gods above have decided to bless you with either a powerful ability or an incredibly overpowered weapon. It can be anything!" Aqua spread her arms up, as if asking him to praise her, although Kazuma's wasn't one to grovel at the feet of a influential person, whether mortal or god. After an awkward silence, the goddess handed him a few hundred cards of paper, littered with brief detail. A sword that can destroy mountains... his eyebrows raised a bit at the unadulterated power of the blade. A bow that can piece through a metre of solid steel... his mouth gaped at the piercing strength of the weapon that reminded him so much of a military torpedo. A tome that can control and create any element... his eyes widened at the unlimited possibilities that this particular weapon could posses. The carra contained more powerful weapons and abilities, so powerful that it would be considered unfair to most spectators.
Kazuma rubbed the back of his neck as he asked the question that bugged his mind. "Umm... Aqua, is this my all my options?" The goddess smiled, pointing a thumb cockily at herself "Of course not! Is there a particular power you want?" She asked, her immaculate face intruding his personal space, she had somehow appeared in front of him, her water-like eyes gazing into his brown. Although he couldn't really complain about the closeness she was displaying, after all, she was insaneAly beautiful.
"Yeah, I would like the eternal mongekyou sharingan. Is that possible?"
Aqua smirked, clicking her fingers that seemed to boom across the abyss. Kazuma felt a blazing pain in his mind and eyes, as if it was being grilled by a electric fry pan. "Your wish has been granted," a blue sigil appeared around the young man's feet and a transparent wall circled around him. But what was more surprising was that the hikikomori was floating towards the roof of the abyss "With this gift, I hope you will best the demon king and bring peace to this new world. If you do so, I will grant you any one wish." Just as they young man was comprehending her words, the goddess once again clicked her fingers and Kazuma's world went black.
