A Little Piece of My Heart

Summary

After moving to San Francisco for her dream job, Bella lives her life to the fullest, even though a little piece of her heart is missing. It's small enough to be missed but large enough to know something is missing.

A story of not knowing what you have until it's almost too late.

Chapter 1

Prologue

Having just fielded yet another call from my best friend, Edward Cullen, I wondered just how we'd gotten to this place. The place where I didn't answer his calls, and brushed him off with short, terse text messages.

I couldn't deny that I had been angry—no, furious—with him when he sprung his little surprise on me. His offer to his long-term girlfriend, Kate Denali, asking her to move into our apartment, led to me packing and going to stay with Jess, my best friend. I hadn't meant it to get as far as it had now, and I could finally admit to myself that I was also somewhat jealous.

Not that I wanted them to split up, I just wanted to have what they had, and him pushing their relationship in my face didn't help at all. It wouldn't have been so bad if he had actually asked me if I would be alright with it, but no, he never even mentioned the idea to me before that day. And by then, it was a 'fait accompli' and the only choice I had was to leave.

Jess was convinced that there was something more between us, but his engagement to Kate put a stop to anything. To be truthful, although I loved him as my best friend, I didn't think there was anything more at all. Now we were at opposite ends of the city, me about to head out to a new job away from Seattle, and him heading for marriage.

I cast my mind back to the day of Kate and Edward's fight, and how the events that followed from that night had led to where I was at this moment, seated on a plane headed for San Francisco
