Cedric gasped as he sat straight up in bed. He was panting and sweating. His pajama shirt clung to his body, and his hair was damp. And were those tears rolling down his cheeks? He looked around his room and sighed in relief, leaning forward and covering his face with his hands. It was just a dream… Just a horrible, insignificant dream… Or was it? He stiffened when he recalled one small detail…
The next thing he knew he was running down the steps of his tower. He hadn't bothered to put on his robe and slippers, and the floor was cold against his bare feet as he rushed through the castle's hallways. Why were there so many hallways when he had somewhere to be? Finally, he reached Sofia's bedroom door and began to knock with urgency.
…
In her bed, Sofia was sleeping soundly, dreaming sweet, blissful dreams. She smiled in her sleep and snuggled deeper into the warmth of her blankets.
Suddenly, the youngest princess of Enchancia sat bolt upright in bed at the sound of urgent rapping on her bedroom door. She blinked. It was probably one or two in the morning. The Protector in her warned her that it was probably some kind of emergency. She tossed back the covers and quickly got out of bed. Grabbing her Enchantlet from her nightstand, she slipped it on as she rushed to her door. Opening the door, she was expecting to find a guard or even her father, but she was definitely not expecting to find her sorcerer standing there in his maroon pajamas with his hair disheveled. She almost laughed, if not for the distraught look on his face.
"Cedric, what's the matter?" she asked softly.
"I had a horrible dream," he replied, shifting nervously from one foot to the other. "Sofia, I need to talk to you. Please."
"Of course."
She stepped into the hallway, pulling her door closed behind her, and walked with him to a cushioned bench nearby. As they walked, Sofia felt Cedric take her hand and cling to it as if his life depended on it. When they sat down, she realized that he was now holding her hand in both of his. His bare hands were soft and gentle as he massaged her fingers. In the glow of a nearby lantern that was kept lit at night, she could clearly see the worry written all over his face. This dream must have really upset him.
"Cedric, what's wrong," she asked gently.
"I had the most horrible dream," he began. "You fell in love with Prince Hugo after you met him at a party in Corinthia, and then you broke up with me on the day before our wedding." He swallowed hard, not quite sure if he wanted to hear her answer to the question he was about to ask. "You did go to a party last week, didn't you? W–Was he–" He was interrupted by a clock down the hall chiming the hour. It was two o'clock in the morning… on the day before their wedding. Another realization hit the poor sorcerer, "Merlin's mushrooms! That dream would have happened today!" He was close to tears now. "Sofia…"
Sensing how upset he truly was, Sofia reached up and touched his cheek with her free hand. "Oh, Cedric, calm down," she said soothingly, smiling as he leaned into her touch. "It was just a bad dream. True. I did go to a party last week." When he gasped she moved her hand up to his bangs, pushing them back from his forehead. "But Hugo wasn't there. I haven't seen him in years. Clio told us he's courting a princess he really cares about."
The relief on his face was evident. He smiled briefly, but soon he was frowning again. "But is this what you really want? I am twenty five years older than you, and–"
Sofia sighed in slight exasperation. Before the sorcerer could say another word, she leaned forward and captured his lips with hers, moving her hand through his hair to the back of his head. Cedric finally released her hand and she placed it on his chest over his heart. He slipped one arm around her waist, pulling her closer. His other hand found its way behind her neck where his fingers caressed her soft skin, causing her to shiver slightly. The kiss was sweet and gentle.
Pulling back, Sofia smiled up at him. "Now are you satisfied?"
"Yes," he whispered.
Before the princess could move, Cedric pulled her to him again, reclaiming her lips and parting them with his tongue. Sofia moaned softly as she wrapped her arms around his neck, deepening the kiss. She shivered again when she felt his hand move down her back. This kiss was full of passion and desire, but they soon became aware that they should stop before things went too far. When they parted, they were both breathless. For a moment, they just sat there staring at each other.
Finally, Cedric reached up and tucked some of her loose hair behind her ear. "I should go."
"Yeah…" she said, yawning. "We should both go back to bed." She paused, and added quickly. "Our own beds, of course."
He chuckled, knowing exactly what she meant. Tomorrow was their wedding day, after all, and then… He shook his head and stood up, holding out his hand to her. She accepted, and they walked back to her bedroom door hand in hand.
"I'm sorry I woke you up like that, my dear," he said sheepishly, when they reached her door. "It was ridiculous of me, but I just… I panicked when I remembered you were at that party. That dream was so real."
"Oh, Cedric. I understand," she smiled, squeezing his hand reassuringly. "You don't know how many times I've dreamed of something horrible happening to you." She released his hand and wrapped him in a tight hug. "I love you. Don't let a bad dream tell you otherwise."
Cedric returned the hug, holding her tightly and burying his face in her hair. "I love you too, Sofia."
A few minutes later, they reluctantly parted from the hug. Cedric bade his princess good bye with a kiss to her forehead and headed back to his tower for a few more hours of sleep. After all, tomorrow was their wedding, and he had a lot to do today.
