What Stood Before Us
Ed, Edd n Eddy fanfic

oooOOOooo
Double D took one last view of the time on his watch. A quarter past four. Which meant that the date should begin in five minutes, promptly. Anxious, he tried to psyche himself out of the self-propelling and rather destructive nature of doubt and guilt. Deep breathing and cleansing of the mind were used to ratified his actions. No one should be against this now that they were a bit older.
They were an item; a pair like any other. Even if it may be bizarre to some; mostly to close associates. The fact remained that they were two young people that were in love. There was nothing wrong in that regard. Two more minutes as he took a long deep sigh. He then felt a tap on one of his shoulders. Turning, he met the soft warm glow that resembled mikan. The figure stood a head below his as she stared happily at him. No doubt excited for today's date; the first of many. And why wouldn't she be? The young girl was smitten by the generosity that is Double D as well as his chivalrous ways. A dying practice, but was kept alive by the brainiac of the cul-de-sac. Her dual reflections from his lens mimicked her actions as she embraced the young lad with open arms.
His eyes were quite transparent. They were clear in what was lurking in his mind. She knew this very well through the years they were neighbors. There was hardly a thing he could hide from the girl; that included what he felt for her. If she had to pick one, that would be her favorite piece of information she acquired from him. The moment she knew, her face lit up. Like a florescent bulb, her cheeks immediately began to glow. It wasn't always this apparent.
In the past, she kept her feelings in check. By the time she became aware of those sensations and their intentions, she was compelled to press down those natures. It was knowledge not yet prepared. They were too young and inexperienced to look at each other as anything more than friends. It bothered her as she felt both side of the argument. He was older. He should already be prepared. She realized ahead of time and that put a dent in the order of things.
It was a constant tug between both sides. Each one claiming one or the other at fault. But she knew better than to be swayed by emotions alone. Time was needed to collect and compiled her thoughts in a nice and tidy manner. Perhaps it was an error of judgment. Friendship could be vague at times. Leading to misinterpretation that could bring people in a gray area.
But the more time she took, the more prominent her feelings became. How could someone as dorky as him be on her mind constantly? It bothered her even more as other girls found his charms just as enticing as she did. One day she stood by her locker, only to witness different girls approaching him. Each one with ill-intent.
A study session
A work-out buddy
Or even just going out to hang
But she knew she could not be fooled. They had other plans in the works, but she did nothing. That was all she could do as she closed her locker door shut. Her best friend noticed her discomfort. Shifting the conversation to something she found interesting. She thanked him. Not out loud but she thanked him nonetheless.
Two years came and went as prom was just around the corner. There were still people asking out late in the game for a date. She didn't care. Her night only required her friends. That was the plan, until her friends surprised her with the news. A last minute change in plan as they each managed to get a date, including her best friend. That one hurt, yet she played the good friend. Telling each one how happy she was for them. She knew they were trying to make it the best night of their life, and now she should too.
What was stopping her? The boy already graduated and was somewhere across the country studying mathematics or some Science major. The point was she was without a date. Thinking about it, she had everything prepared. Her dress was ready as well as what she planned to wear on her face. As she laid in her bed battling her feelings, her mind drifted to one place. She literally could walk two minutes to where he used to live. Time began to drift as she sat before her vanity mirror. Slowly, she applied her cosmetic; subtle yet profound. That was the theme she was going with as she then adjusted her dress. It was perfect as she played with the fabric. The bottom of the dress topple as if to fall before dropping to the ground. One look in the mirror, and she saw the expression on the reflection.
And without much thought, her body moved. The girl literally performed a sharp turn on the floor before dashing down the stairs. Storming out, she stomped with every step she took until she got to his wooden door. Her hand formed a tight fist that she used to bang on the entrance. White knuckles were turning slightly red.
And with the impact of her fist, followed her cry. She spoke of her feelings. The very thing she now despised and wished she never became aware of. They hindered her and right now, she wanted to take it out on him. Even when she knew he wasn't there, she needed this. This exit valve that left the girl venting to a busted exterior door. Her voice felt gone when she drew much-needed air to her lungs. There it was. Everything that she needed to say was said.
"Sarah?"
A voice came and spoke her name. She froze as she realized her lips revealed everything. All that she bore within were now up in the air. There was nothing to hide she thought as she turned around.
There by the driveway, was Double D with his car. Apparently he came to stay for a few weeks while his school was on break; just her luck.
"What are you doing here?" He asked.
"I...I..." She then felt she needed answers first. "Did you hear everything I said just now?"
The lad shook his head. "No, I had the windows rolled up. I could hear yelling and banging but your words were incoherent I'm afraid."
And as he spoke, his eyes took a moment to gander the presentation. Pomegranate as the primary color, her red crimson earring compliment her dress as his eyes traveled down. On the floor, instead of matching heels Sarah stood before him barefoot. Like her hands, the bottom soles of her feet were red on contact with the concrete cement. She felt warm inside as she realized he was looking at her. The imperfection displayed to the boy she liked. How embarrassing, she thought.
She stared down at her feet when she felt him coming closer. His hands were on her shoulders before they quickly picked the girl up from the ground. The action took the girl by surprised as her body levitate across until she found herself on the trunk of Double D's car. He made sure she sat steadily before removing his hands off her person. He had a better view of her feet as he realized several scrape marks. Most likely she ran without any considerations on what it may have done to her feet against the rough ground. Her guava green color nails were tarnished.
Looking at the girl now, in such a raw form, he felt surprisingly nervous. A feeling that resurfaced after years of solitude. A continuation of where they left off. Her small nose, rosy cheeks, blue crystal eyes and her lips left slightly ajar. He was practically drinking in everything he could see with his eyes. And like that, their eyes were locked. It was at that moment that the magic began with a question. A bit coarse from using her voice too long and loud, but the message got sent.
"Would you go to prom with me?"
She smiled, remembering such a happy memory. Blinking her eyes, she took his hand and lock fingers with his. And as they walked, she recalled one last piece of the puzzle. The simple sweet yet sensational kiss he bestowed upon her before he replied positively to her inquiry.
