Annie turned on the shower and stood under the hot water, basking in the way it seemed to cleanse her as the steam rolled off her body. Her best friend Montana stood in the stall beside her, looking over at the new girl on her left.
"Hi." the blonde said with a smile. "I'm not a lez. Just friendly. Rad bod, though. Like that girl on Cheers."
Annie leaned around, smirking at the brunette girl. "I noticed you ogling our buddy Chet's mound during class. You want me to introduce you?"
"I don't know what you're talking about." Brooke blushed.
"It's nothing to be ashamed of. The whole reason most people come to Slimmercise class is to hook up." Montana assured her.
"Not for me."
"The last American virgin." Montana stage-whispered.
Annie snorted loudly as she turned off her water and wrapped her towel around her. They walked to the locker room, talking as they got dressed.
"Everyone tells me I can be a little over the top with new people. It's just that it's L.A... you can't make friends unless you get a little aggressive, right?" Montana said as she approached the newcomer.
"Totally. I'm Brooke. I'm new in town." The girl said awkwardly.
"Well, I'm obsessed with this place. I've been doing aerobics since..." she trailed off, looking over to Annie.
"Ever since we read those articles about it in Rolling Stone." Annie reminded her.
"Did you know they have competitive aerobics championships?" Montana gushed.
"Sounds... serious." Brooke mumbled.
"I know it may sound silly to you, but I'm gonna be the greatest aerobics competitor of all time."
"And I'll be on the sidelines cheering you on like a good best friend." Annie laughed. She turned to Brooke and smiled. "I'm Annie, by the way. This beautiful babe here is Montana."
Brooke nodded and smiled back.
"If you can wait like five minutes, you can walk out with us." Montana offered.
Brooke nodded and accepted. Five minutes later, the three girls walked out of the locker room towards where the boys were gathered.
Xavier was talking to them as they all listened closely. "She was stabbed, like, times. Her throat was cut so badly she was basically decapitated."
"Describing what Annie is gonna look like after this weekend?" Montana asked, flinging an arm around his shoulders.
"Hilarious." He deadpanned. "No. There was a murder a couple of days ago in Glassell Park. My cousin works for LAPD Homicide, and they're convinced whoever did it is responsible for a bunch of other unsolved murders in town. The cops are calling him the Night Stalker."
Montana removed her arm as Annie approached, Xavier looking at her with hunger in his eyes. He pulled her close and wrapped an arm around her waist, the other resting precariously low on her hip. "You were absolutely breathtaking in class. I swear that tight little ensemble you had on made me wanna-"
Brooke cut him off before he got a chance to finish his sentence. "I heard serial killers become more active in the summer months when it's hot. Because people sleep with their windows open at night."
After a long, awkward pause, Montana finally spoke up. "This is Brooke. She's new in town. Brooke, this is Xavier, Ray and Chet."
A tense hello was exchanged between Brooke and Chet before she turned to the rest of the group. "How do you guys know each other?"
"Well, it's L.A. Do any of us really know each other?" Xavier laughed.
"Only in the biblical sense, babydoll." Annie joked, causing him to slide his hand off her hip and grab her ass.
"That's the best way." He joked as they all shuffled into a sort of circle.
"We collected each other over the last couple of years. Xavier and Montana met in traffic - and dated for a hot second." Ray explained.
""Met in traffic" is a nice way of saying that I missed an audition for one of the last episodes of MASH because she rear-ended me." Xavier fussed as he and Annie walked to their place, him standing behing her with his arms wrapped comfortably around her stomach.
"You are welcome." Montana teased.
"You're an actor?" Brooke asked.
"Yeah. Not one of those "happy to get a role on a soap opera or a Coca-Cola commercial" types. I'm a serious actor. I trained at Stella Adler... I'm method." Xavier boasted.
Annie laughed. "He's also a drama queen. I've known Montana since we were about twelve. I met Xavier at a party that Montana and I were at about a week after they broke up. We hooked up and it's been peaches and creme ever since."
"You guys got together a week after they broke up?" Brooke questioned.
"It was no biggie. We only dated for like two weeks. Plus they're like perfect together, so I couldn't even be mad if I tried." Montana assured.
Annie blew her a kiss and Montana winked back.
"Cool." Brooke mused.
"Chet and I met at the gym." Xavier explained.
"Yeah, and I think I met Montana at a party up in the hills at Justine Bateman's house." Ray remembered, smiling at the girl.
"You know her?" Brooke asked in awe.
"Not really." Montana smirked. "The real famous one here is Annie."
The girl in question rolled her eyes and huffed. "Cut it out, Monty. I'm not famous yet. We literally JUST got signed. As soon as summer is over, the band is cracking down and hitting the recording studio."
"You got signed to a label? Wait, you're THAT Annie? Annie Jackson, lead singer from "Annie Got Her Gun"?" Brooke said in sudden realization.
Annie smiled and nodded. "Yup. I'm surprised that you know about my band, though. We're pretty punk, not to mention underground. No offense, but you seem kinda... soft for our stuff."
"My, uh, ex-Fiance and his best friend listened to you guys all the time." Brooke said quietly.
"Gotcha. Well, I'm definitely looking forward to this summer. Xavier here got us a pretty cool gig until I start recording in the fall." Annie said.
"Yeah! Like I was saying, my cousin was saying that they think that this guy's gonna go on a rampage, like Son of Sam did. Which is why I'm getting out of town for the next couple of months." Xavier said, smiling brightly.
"He got us a gig as a counselor at a summer camp they're opening up a couple of hours from here." Annie informed them.
"You guys should all come. I mean, they're desperate for counselors." Xavier offered.
"Hey, I'm in. When do we leave?" Ray asked excitedly.
"Tomorrow, after class."
"Why can't we leave tonight?"
"Slow down. What's with you?"
"You been jumpy all week."Annie pointed out. "What's up, Ray? Got a dead body in your trunk?" She laughed.
"I'm just ready to get out before the Olympic shit show starts. Okay? Los Angeles is about to descend into chaos. All right, gridlock on the freeways. And I'm thinking of poor Chet, having to be here getting his face rubbed in it." Ray chuckled, patting the athlete on the back.
Chet bristled up amd shoock his head. "Fuck the IOC. I'm in."
"Do you think they'd let me teach aerobics up there?" Montana asked excitedly.
"Can't see why not." Xavier reasoned.
"I'm in." Montana agreed. She turned to look at Brooke before speaking again. "You should come. I'm desperate for some more estrogen in this crew. Don't get me wrong, but Annie here is on Xavier's dick so often you'd think they were stuck like that."
"Har har, very funny." Annie said, sticking her tongue out.
"Oh. Sounds fun, but I'm taking classes at Santa Monica College. I'm gonna be a veterinary assistant." Brooke said with a timid smile
"Wow. Aiming high."
"Knock it off, Montana." Ray snipped. "Yeah. I'm in the medical field, too."
"Medical field? You're an orderly. You mop up poop." Chet laughed
"We're all putting our lives on hold for this, but I'm telling you, it's gonna be worth it." Annie cut in, ending the argument before it even began.
Xavier nodded in agreement before moving to grab his bag. "You don't want to be in this town this summer. It could cost you your life."
Annie jogged over to grab her bag, slung it over her shoulder, then jogged back over to Xavier. "Ready to get home? We still have to pack." She reminded him.
"Yup. And I expect to see plenty of skimpy bikinis and lingerie in there for me."
"Is that so? Well, maybe you'll get a special preview tonight." She said with a wink. "After all, what better way to start off a killer summer than a little...fun?"
