Well, hello everyone. I'm back at it. I will hopefully be updating this story somewhat frequently. But the allure of an OC in the Toaruverse is too great right now, I'd be a much less happy person if I didn't update that story once a week. Also, this story is my best attempt to sticking to canon for both Toaru and Steins;Gate, so it can be a bit difficult to come up with something on the spot.
Chapter 5: The start of a nice sunny day

Mikoto was already in her Tokiwadai uniform and had left her 'work clothes' inside the wardrobe. Washing them every day would be a waste and it would be even more of a waste this time because she didn't really do much due to Okabe's appearance forcing her to alter her plans on dealing with the terrible 'researchers'.
"I'm off for the day then, Okabe-senpai. I can't make Kuroko worry too much." Mikoto noted.
"Take care of the key to the hotel room and try not to draw any attention to yourself. Do you need some cash to buy clothes?" Mikoto asked.
Okabe nodded to both statements.
"Please try to not get yourself caught senpai. If your professor Leskinen caught on, he might already have sent out someone to assassinate you or something. He seems to be that type of person, based on your description." Mikoto continued.
"You don't need to tell me that. I already know what that bastard's plans for probably are. We're lucky that we know of his existence, while he has no clue about mine." Okabe responded.
"Well then." Mikoto waved as she was already in her school uniform and was about to depart. She woke up a bit early just for that… but she still got enough sleep thanks to her not going out to destroy too many facilities. "There's still the question of how I'll be able to destroy double the amount today. I promised myself I'll finish the rest them in three days." Mikoto thought and frowned. She'd need to make up for the losses tonight.
""Huh… this is the first time we've been apart since we've met, isn't it?"" both of them thought when Mikoto was already outside the door.

"Not good… I cannot find any good merchandise!" said Okabe, while doing browsing the web on Mikoto's laptop and doing something that can only be described as 'comic relief' for both himself and whoever could be watching his whole life unfold.
"Still, Academy City is a rather peculiar place… Many world leaders are also gon- replaced by similar, albeit different people." he concluded as closed the laptop and put it away.
"Nevertheless, I will probably not get any valuable intel, considering Misaka, who is much more adept at hacking, isn't here." he said. "I guess I'll have to sneak out, huh? The hotel's staff will probably come to clean the room as per usual and having them see me inside the room… won't be good. Seeing the city for myself during daytime is also valuable in this situation." he thought.
Okabe decided that it's time. He moved to pick up the cash his kouhai left him along with the electronic key. He wasn't sure whether to focus on the fact that he's getting money from a middle schooler or that everything in this world is so advanced.
From his initial assessment, those types of keys were oftentimes used in 2036 in the most heavily guarded facilities in the couple of 'void worldlines' where he got the chance to see such places. "I guess they are about 30 years ahead in that department as well." Okabe thought and tensed up immediately. Did Misaka tell him this information? Did he find out on his own? Or is it 'the void' doing its thing again? He had no answer, his memory was fuzzy for a moment there. "Wait… I read about that on the forum, didn't I?" Okabe thought and breathed a sigh of relief.
"Well then, I guess it's time to repeat what I did last night." Okabe sighed and cracked his knuckles in anticipation.

Kamjou Touma was up somewhat late today, considering he had to take care of Index most of the time. There was the fact that he had lost his memories and the whole scenario regarding Deep Blood was a bit overwhelming but he promised himself to push through. He didn't want Index or anyone else for that matter to lose their smiles.
"Fukou da, what has my life gotten into?" he thought as he was running from thugs… once again…
"How dare you trip over boss, you imbecile?!" the leading thug shouted as they closely matched Touma's running speed.
"Damn it, I need to lose them. How should I- An alleyway!" Touma thought as he took a left turn to enter said alleyway.
Meanwhile, Okabe Rintaro, who was now wearing a plain grey t-shirt along with some black cargo pants and some cheap running shoes, saw all of this go down as he was walking towards the running mob, before the turned to his right and entered an alleyway. "While I do want to stay out of trouble, it's probably better to help that kid by distracting some of the thugs. Doesn't he know that that one leads to a dead-end? I have been in this city for less than a day and I already know such things. Though, I did research the map extensively and I probably did so only of my current semi-fugitive status in this city.." Okabe thought as he slowly turned right and walked towards the mob now surrounding the unfortunate boy.
"*Haah* *Haah* Fukou da." Touma mumbled as he finally noticed that the alleyway was a dead end due to a new building being constructed and the construction workers blocking the path with a 4-meter fence made out of sheet metal. He'd probably know the city better, the old Touma would, but he is not that person. Those memories have been 'killed'. He ran up to the fence and prepared to face off against his 10 pursuers.
"Stop right there!" shouted Okabe as he extended his hand and gathered the attention of 11 people at the other end of the relatively short alleyway. "Right, I've stopped them temporarily. I probably should NOT state my name considering the implications of either 'Okabe Rintaro' or 'Hououin Kyoma' getting out and reaching the ears of Leskinen." eas the thought going through Okabe's head while he shouted that.
"And who the fuck are you?!" the most annoyed of the bunch of thugs replied.
"An ally of justice!" he faced the thugs sideways and pointed a finger at them "Someone who you ugly bastards will never understand!" Okabe taunted.
"What the hell is that person doing? I know this city is full of weirdoes but this level of chuunibyou… is something else." thought Touma as he was once again confronted with someone he might or might not have known "Fukou da."
"Ohh. Tough one, are we?" the same annoyed thug cracked his fingers.
"Four of you, get him!" the annoyed thug, who revealed himself to be the boss of the group with those words ordered. Okabe's taunt worked.
"Muhahaha!" Okabe ran off with a lightly toned laugh. He turned the corner and waited for the thugs to appear as he pushed his back against the wall and was ready to take them out.
"Get him!" a stupid sounding thug, who was part of the group of 4 pursuers yelled. The voice was a bit similar to that one soldier Okabe met, when he was temporarily with Leskinen. Okabe brushed it off, that soldier, despite his possible shortcomings, probably had more sense in him than these thugs ever will.
As 4 of the thugs that ran off turned the corner, three of them were greeted by Okabe's leg, which he used to trip them up.
The fourth thug was slightly behind them and Okabe used the element of surprise to land a devastating right hook, knocking out the fourth thug. Okabe might not have the strength, but the various futures of worldline Alpha had taught him a lot about surprising one's opponents, he wasn't about to forget that knowledge so soon.
Okabe then waited for the other three to get up for a moment, but luck was on his side as they landed pretty badly and already knocked themselves out.
"See kid? That random weirdo stood no chance. Now, stop wasting our time and get your sorry ass ready for a beatdown!" he exclaimed to Touma.
"I can probably take the 10 on now, one by one. I won't forget your sacrifice, random stranger." Touma thought and comically teared up "I also won't let them beat anyone unrelated up in that way. I will avenge you."
"Here I co-!" Touma shouted.
"You stood no chance against me, amateurs!" Okabe exclaimed in his 'Kyoma tone'.
""Wha-?"" the thug leader and Touma were not expecting someone as frail-looking as Okabe to be the one left standing.
"Let's team up, shounen!" Okabe exclaimed as he approached the thugs swiftly.
"All right!" Touma exclaimed back as he proceeded to knock out one of the thugs, who looked the other way towards Okabe. Touma was a bit taken aback by the chuunibyou-esque antics but he was going to appreciate any help he can get. Touma secretly felt that he should ask someone to help ease his daily misfortune, but his status as the saviour of pretty much anyone he comes across was severely slowing down any progress in that area.
The street fight was now 5 vs 2. Favourable odds for Touma and Rintaro, considering the pair's actually decent fighting ability.
The five of the remaining thugs decided to gang up on Touma who seemed a less dangerous opponent given his less impressive track record. He only knocked one of them out from behind after all. Thugs in normal cities would probably not consider Okabe much of a threat even after him knocking out four people but Academy City thugs knew better. "He might be an esper, let's deal with him later." was the trail of thought of the thug leader.
Their thinking process was completely wrong. Touma was the one who could handle himself in a street fight, while Okabe was the one who knew how to use underhanded tactics for his own survival.
In 20 seconds of calculated fighting from both Touma, who dodged over a dozen punches and landed 3 knockouts, and from Okabe, who successfully used some Judo moves that he got Suzuha to teach him in the futures of many worldlines to knock out 1 thug and pin down the leader.
"*Haah* *Haah* Seems like you're only strong in numbers." Okabe noted as he delivered the finishing blow with his shoe to the leader's head.
"*Haah* Well, thanks for helping. Uhh…" Touma figured he probably didn't know the person, but just in case… he didn't want the knowledge of his amnesia going public.
Okabe turned to face Touma as they stood roughly 3 meters apart.
Okabe started chuckling.
"I, Hououin Kyoma, shall grace you with my presence!" Hououin Kyoma exclaimed.
"That right hand." Kyoma said as he pointed at Touma's right hand "Your right hand has the ability to deliver devastating blows to any opponent!" Okabe exclaimed.
"Yes… it's me… it appears I have made an important ally… Organization? I shall not allow them to learn of my existence. Yes… EL. PSY. KONGROO~." Hououin Kyoma never ceased to surprise his new acquaintances as he talked to someone via his turned-off phone yet again.
Touma was now certain. He couldn't possibly know the person, or he'd feel some sort of itch. The guy in front of him was a whole another level of weird. "Wait right ha-" Touma's thoughts were cut off by the continuation of Kyoma's speech.
"Precisely!" Kyoma somehow half-answered Touma's thoughts "Your right hand has the ability to break someone's illusions! For example, those thugs. They thought they could beat you, but they could not. You broke their illusions! I hereby name your right hand! Its name shall be IMAGINE BREAKER!" Kyoma exclaimed almost everything and stressed the chuunibyou name of the right hand by saying the name in a louder tone.
Touma was dumbstruck. He could grasp someone coming out and calling his right hand the Imagine Breaker… but for a seemingly complete stranger… it seemed a bit much.
"With that said, let us go and discuss these events in a CAFÉ! You don't seem to be the lucky type, young man. Follow me!" continued Kyoma.
"He… doesn't seem like a magician, nor an esper. Just who is he? And how does he know about both my Imagine Breaker and my misfortune?" Touma thought up the questions that were very serious and desperately needed to be legitimately answered.

The pair found a café relatively nearby with Okabe, the person who memorized most of Academy City's layout, leading the way. The layout was not much different from the area of Tokyo that it replaced and Okabe got to know the city a LOT throughout his various ventures in various worldlines, be they the void ones or the regular ones.
Touma, the most unfortunate amnesiac followed suit. Touma mostly got used to Academy City, but he still didn't know all the nooks and crannies of it, which old Touma probably did.
They didn't speak on their way there, but were now about to enter a café.
"Uhm, could we please get a table for two?" Okabe was strictly adhering to the rules of Keigo… which surprised Touma yet again. "Was this Kyoma persona a façade the whole time… then?" Touma pondered.
"Ah. We currently have a discount for cou-" a waitress in a maid uniform spoke as she approached Okabe.
"Just a normal table, please." Okabe insisted, sounding a bit less polite, just as Touma entered the café as well and walked to his side signalling that they indeed were not a couple.
"*Ahem* The table will be ready shortly, dear customers." she apologized, bowed slightly and went off to carry out other orders for different customers, who weren't numerous at all given the time of day.
"*Haah*" Touma sighed "Does the nearest café have to be a maid one? Fukou da." Touma said in anticipation of more misfortune than usual. It was statistically proven that more bizarre situations in maid cafés compared to normal cafés throughout Academy City. Touma's misfortune was going to be greater than usual.
Okabe, meanwhile, was almost about to tear up. The times Mayuri and Faris worked in their maid café brought some very warm memories and the realization that those memories are long gone with his own world. "Damn. I will make Leskinen pay for his actions. If all else fails, I'm taking him with me again." Okabe thought.
"Heh, this brings back old memories." Okabe said in his non-Kyoma tone.
"Dear customers, the table is ready. Please follow me." the maid-waitress instructed.
Touma and Okabe followed the waitress as they got to their table, which was beside the large window to the street they just walked on moments ago.
"Are you ready to order something?" the waitress asked.
"Yes, some black coffee for me and..?" Okabe looked over at Touma.
"Ahh, I don't particularly need anything." Touma replied.
"Some green tea then as well, please." Okabe said.
"Certainly. You order will be ready in 5 minutes." the maid-waitress noted and went to greet other incoming customers.
"Don't worry, I'll be the one paying." Okabe noted as he decided to pay for the young man.
"Like I said, it's fine. No need to get anything for me." Touma still protested.
"I think we both need something to drink after that and you seem to be a poor high-school student, judging by your appearance. Besides, it's just some tea. It's not expensive, right?" Okabe spoke the words of reason here.
Touma had no choice but to give up. He also did a lot of selfless things and he didn't actually want to disrespect someone who appeared older than him, even if that person had two personalities or something.
"Kamijou Touma. Sorry for the late introduction." Touma introduced himself.
"Okabe Rintaro. Please forgive my somewhat weird behaviour. It's an old habit of mine that I used to increase my own confidence when I'm in dangerous situations and cheer up a childhood friend…" Okabe explained but looked solemn.
"She is not with us today sadly. Being 'Hououin Kyoma' helps me honour her… I think…" Okabe gave Touma small and sad smile.
"Sorry about that." Touma apologized in a solemn tone.
"Why was this the nearest café?" a wild Mikoto wondered out loud as she appeared and sighed as she came into the café itself.
"I should be the last person to visit maid cafés…" Mikoto rightly assumed.
"Now is there a free ta-" she noticed the two people she least expected to see together… to well… be together. For some reason.
Mikoto was not happy with the proceedings as she angrily approached the pair.
"Biri-Biri?" Touma wondered about the electricity she was producing.
"I… do have name… and it's Misaka Mikoto! Remember it already, you idiot!" said electromaster, who interpreted Touma's mesmerization by her ability as him calling her by that nickname yet again, started a commotion and sent some electricity Touma's way.
Touma promptly put up his right hand and started retorting.
"It's dangerous, you know?! Don't do that in a café of all places!" he exclaimed.
"Stop forgetting my name and I'll stop, you idiot!" Misaka retorted as she approached the table.
Okabe was watching this from the side and while he had a bit of a Déjà vu moment regarding this (it really brought back memories of himself and Kurisu), he noticed something was off about Touma. It was as if he didn't know her but she knew him. "Is Kamijou hiding his lack of memory of Misaka? Seems very likely. In any case, I'll need to ask him in person later." Okabe thought.
"*Ahem* With that said, let us stop the commotion." Okabe said in a loud tone.
"Everyone is looking at us." he half-whispered to the pair.
"How do you know him?" Mikoto demanded from Okabe who was now the center of her attention as she grabbed a chair and sat with the two.
"He was chased by some thugs and I helped out a bit." Okabe replied calmly and looked over at Touma.
Touma assumed that seeing Mikoto and Okabe together was normal is what Okabe concluded based on his expression. "He either time travelled to a very different worldline/timeline to his or he lost his memory." Okabe thought "In any case, it's best to ask him when no one else is around. I wouldn't want to reveal that kind of secret even if it's not my own."
Okabe signalled Mikoto to lean in, which she did.
"Is this guy trustworthy?" Okabe whispered.
"He tried to unnecessarily save me from some thugs that one time. I've met him a couple of times afterwards. He seems to be able to block my ability somehow." Mikoto whispered back.
The two leaned back and continued looked over at Touma with serious faces.
"Uhm… is there something on my face?" the amnesiac young man didn't really understand what's happening.
"No, it's nothing. I'll be back in a second." Okabe noted as he stood up went to find the waitress.
Touma and Mikoto remained seated with Mikoto eyeing Touma with the same serious expression. They didn't really have much to say at this point.
"I'm very sorry, could I please change the order to a takeaway?" Okabe approached the waitress.
"Ah. Yes, certainly." The waitress went to the barista who was about to pour the drinks. The barista looked over at Okabe, nodded to the waitress and proceeded to pour the coffee and green tea into disposable cups.
Okabe gave the money and left a tip. After he did so, he went back to the table, holding one cardboard cup of hot beverage in each hand. He even didn't make the rookie mistake of forgetting to put the lid on each cup.
Okabe gathered the pair's attention once again "It's a nice sunny day outside, why don't we go for a walk?"
I hope the wait was worth it for you. The chapter is not 5k+ words, but it's something.
I'm hoping my portrayal of the three characters approaches or even matches the canon in your eyes.
P.S. Please consider posting a review and/or following and favouriting this story if you like the chapter/story itself.
