Chapter Three: Girls Night Out.

Looking through the letters that had come, Gianna frowned seeing no sign of anything from her lawyer and she hated that her entire life had become a limbo that she seemed trapped in while she waited for her divorce. The apartment was in the final stages of being sold and Gianna knew that Michael was not likely to halt their divorce proceedings now not when he seemed happy with his side piece.

Gianna sighed moving to put the letters on the table and headed to grab something to eat for dinner, she was certain that things would turn around once the apartment was sold and she had her own space. It was nice being home again with her family, she had not visited them much when she had been in New York; something that she did feel guilty about but she needed her own space.

Her grandmother had assured her that she could stay as long as she wanted or needed, she was not in a rush for her only granddaughter to move out and she rather liked the company. Opening the fridge, Gianna pursed her lips trying to decide what she wanted for dinner; she was alone tonight since her grandmother was at her book club and she would not be back until late.

The sound of her mobile ringing made Gianna jump, she was home alone and not expecting any calls since she had just got home from work; if she were lucky, she could curl up in front of the tv without being called back in. Seeing the name of the screen, a smile formed on her face and she quickly answered it; she really got to speak with the friends that she had left behind in New York.

"Hey Jess," Gianna greeted moving to make a sandwich, she tried to recall the last time that she had spoken to Jess and she felt bad when she could not recall their last conversation or what was happening in her friend's life. She guessed she had been rather wrapped up in her own drama, she had been focused on her new job and moving back to Chicago; that was not even mentioning the fact she was getting divorced.

Listening to her friend, Gianna could not help but miss how things had been in New York; out of everything, she missed her friends but she knew that coming to Chicago had been the right choice. It felt like an age since she had had a good night out with her friends, she had put that sort of thing on hold since she had come here not feeling comfortable to do such a thing yet.

"Is everything okay?" Gianna asked sensing the nerves in Jess's voice, she did not know what it was but there was a nagging feeling when she heard her friend talk; she was edging around something and Gianna doubted that it was good. Nothing was good when it took someone forever to say the words, Gianna listened as Jess stumbled for a moment before she dropped the news that she had called to tell her.

"She's pregnant," Gianna whispered, her stomach twisting at the thought and she felt like she had been kicked in the stomach; she had not been expecting it not so soon after they had separated. It was bad enough knowing that the two were living together and were showing off their relationship to all of the friends that Michael and Gianna had shared; she got to be on his arm instead of Gianna.

Moving away from the sandwich that she had been making, Gianna sat down at the table since her legs felt like they would give out from under her; she could not believe this not after everything that they had been through. She did not even recall hanging up the phone as she tried to stop the tears that had started to build; she felt so stupid for crying over Michael again.

Her right hand pressed over her mouth to stifle the cry that fell from her lips, she started to weep wondering why he sort to hurt her like this; parading his pregnant girlfriend around when they were not even divorce yet. Her left arm twisted around her abdomen and closed her eyes, was this why he had cheated because she had failed to give him a child; he had been so angry when she had lost their boy.

Gianna could not shake the night that she had woken up to blood-stained sheets, the trip to the hospital only confirming that she had lost her baby. Michael had been furious with her, stating that if she had quit her job like he had told her then their baby would be alive; their son would have lived if she had done as he had told her and now, he was gone.

"There you are," Maggie greeted moving to hug Gianna, she was thrilled to see her and had thought like every other time that Gianna would not come; she had asked her a few times before to join her and the others at Molly's. It was understood that Gianna was saving for her own place and had to cut back on some things but Maggie worried that she was sacrificing a little too much; she did not want Gianna to find herself an outsider.

"Sorry I'm late," Gianna murmured allowing Maggie to hug her, she had been desperate to get out of the house after that phone call; she did not want her Grandmother to come home to find her crying. She had dressed quickly after weeping over a man that she had sworn never to cry over again, anger filling her and she wanted nothing more than to forget even just for tonight.

"I am glad that you came," Maggie encouraged, she led Gianna over to the others knowing that tonight would be good for her; she needed to let her hair down once in awhile even if it was just the odd occasion. Gianna had worked her butt off since she had arrived and Maggie could not believe that she had settled in so well; she was glad that her friend was finally allowing herself to enjoy her time in Chicago. Getting to the table, Gianna paused for a moment seeing someone that she did not recognise surrounded by her friends from work; she did not think she had met them before.

"This is Robin Charles. She's the new Epidemiologist and Dr Charles' daughter," Maggie stated seeing the confusion on Gianna's face and moving to introduce the other woman to her. It was nice to say that Gianna was officially no longer the new girl of the ED, they had not been expecting another new arrival when Gianna had joined them only a couple of months earlier.

"I'm finally not the new girl," Gianna grinned moving to shake Robin's hand, she had to admit that she had grown used to some of the teasing that she got because she was the new girl on the block. Maggie set a drink down in front of Gianna before sliding into the seat next to her, the conversation around them cheerful and it was not long before everyone was talking like old friends.

"You'll have to show me the ropes," Robin asserted leaning forward with a smile, she was thankful for the warm welcome even if she did not want people to treat her differently because of who her father was. Despite the fact that she had come to Chicago to be closer to her estranged father and to get to know him better; she wanted to stand on her own feet at work and not relying on him when she was more than capable at her job.

"I certainly will," Gianna replied, she found herself liking Robin and she looked forward to seeing her more at work; she had no doubts that they would see each other in the ED from time to time. Being here felt like a good distraction and Gianna was more than thankful for that after the phone call; her thoughts drifting back to that conversation and she felt a lump form in her throat.

Sipping on her drink, Gianna tried to push back the emotions that threatened to swallow her; she refused to cry again tonight when she was meant to be having a good time with friends. Nothing would change what had happened to her and Gianna doubted that this would be the first time that she would feel down when it came to something like this; she could not imagine what she would be like when her divorce was finalised.

"Gianna, you okay?" Maggie asked seeing the watery eyes on her friend, she set down her drink and reached to give Gianna's hand a squeeze. She had noticed something a little off in the time that she had worked with Gianna, something more than her friend had let on while they had known one another.

"Hey, come on… you can tell me anything," Maggie encouraged, she leant close wanting to offer her some comfort even if those around them where now watching; she glanced at them with a warning wanting them to back off. Maggie's unspoken warning made the others move away, she was glad that they did not linger and she was thankful for the privacy when she turned back to Gianna. She might have been good at hiding the pain that she was in but Maggie saw through that, she had not wished to push her instead of hoping that she would share her secret when she was ready.

Gianna sniffled feeling silly, she could not believe she was running her first night out to cry over something that really should not matter to her; why should she care if Michael were having a baby with his side-chick. Taking a deep breath, Gianna cursed herself for not being able to hold herself together that she had allowed Michael to have this hold over her when he was not part of her life anymore; she looked at Maggie who offered her a reassuring smile.

"I'm getting divorced, that's why I moved back to Chicago," Gianna admitted softly, her words barely loud enough to be heard over the chatter of the bar. She looked down at her hands, she had not wanted anyone to know because they would pity her and she did not want this after she had moved from New York; she had wanted to leave that part of her life behind.

Maggie was silent, she did not say anything instead she waited for Gianna to continue talking; she would be there for her and she had a feeling that something had happened to make her leave New York. The poor planning had been more than a giveaway, Maggie did not think that she had seen anyone try so hard to pretend that everything was alright when there was clearly something bothering her.

"I came home from a shift and found him in bed with his assistant," Gianna explained, she wiped her nose on the sleeve of her jumper and kept her eyes down while she thought about the breakdown of her marriage. No doubt people had laughed when they had been told about how she had found out, they probably thought that she was a fool for not noticing her husband was caring on a six-month affair with another woman.

"He didn't even care that I walked in and he didn't apologise, he looked relieved that I knew," Gianna croaked, her voice thick with tears that she tried to keep back not wishing to cry in the bar and attract more attention to herself. Maggie remained silent, her silence only serving to push Gianna on with her words and she felt like a weight was slowly being lifted from her shoulders after months of trying to keep quiet.

"All those plans we had, all the time I wasted trying to make him happy while I put my wants and needs aside," Gianna muttered with a shake of her head, she felt all over the place and she wanted nothing more than to punch Michael for doing this to her. Everything she had hoped for in the future was gone, she was left to start over while he carried on like nothing had happened; she had not even heard from his parents since they had filed for divorce. Not even an apology for how their son had treated her, no phone call or message, not even a letter to say that they hoped that she would be alright; they had cut her off as if she had not been a part of their lives for seven years.

"Now she's having his baby, the one thing I just couldn't seem to give him," Gianna sobbed trying to hold it back but not succeeding; she was thankful when Maggie pulled her into a hug, she barely noticed that a couple of the others had edged back to the table. April offering her some tissues from her bag and squeezing Gianna's shoulder, she glanced at Maggie knowing they would kick this guy's ass if he ever showed up here.

"He's an ass and he doesn't deserve you," Maggie said pulling back slight, she helped Gianna wipe away her tears and offered her a small smile; she was certain that Gianna would bounce back from this. It had not been good for her to bottle all of this up, she had tried to push things down and ignore them only for it to backfire; now she had her friends who had her back.

"We'll kick his ass if he ever comes to Chicago," April reassured her, she smiled down at Gianna who was starting to calm down and she was glad that she had told them what was going on. It was better and they would be able to help her get through this, she could not imagine going through this alone especially hearing the news about how well her husband's life was going without her.

Gianna laughed at April's words, a slight smile forming on her face and she felt relieved that she had told them what was going on; she did not have to pretend that all was okay anymore. Her life might suck right now and she was facing the unknown without a plan, she would get through this and she did not doubt that her friends would be there for her whatever came next.

"I think we need some shots," Robin announced before disappearing towards the bar, she was sure they could turn this around and she felt bad for Gianna. It was hard enough starting over when you were planning it, but everything that Gianna had planned had been ripped from her when her husband had left her for another woman.

"Let's toast to a brighter future!" Maggie insisted with a grin, they all raised the shots that Robin had brought; they would make it through this and they had each other's backs.
