(Edits Made, 3/31/20: Updated Grammar, Paragraph Breaks, and Added Note. Another Edit, Added Sun Wukong to Alliance and Fixed Grammar.)

Just an additional note that I do not use beta readers.

Hey Everyone! This is a bit of a long note because it's my first fic (on this acc), so bear with me.

Yeah, this isn't my first rodeo on writing fanfiction, and i never really got into it. This is mostly because i strive to write original stories with original characters, aka books. however, i've taken a break from that and will be putting some effort into writing fanfiction. of course, i love writing romance and fantasy, so that's exactly what i'm going to do! i will warn you because i'm definitely not 100% committed to writing fanfiction and will update left and right, often taking a few weeks or more to really write something.

This idea just came to my mind, and i'm excited to know what will happen. i have the habit of letting my stories write for me and never really creating a plan, so whatever happens, happens! so truthfully, this is as much an adventure for me as it is for you all reading it:)

I'm mainly going to focus on Whiterose, but there will definitely be a lot of Bumbleby, since that is my favorite ship of the two. however, i've been getting in the groove of Whiterose lately, so i decided... why not? i'll try my best to capture the characters, and there will be a lot of revealed information, since i'm well caught up on the actual series. all of this is Season 7 and below, so don't read unless you've seen all of those seasons.

The story isn't based off of RWBY to the degree that it has the exact world, exact story, exact portrayals of criminals. again, this is a fantasy fic with the characters from the show, but it doesn't follow the same story plot. obviously RWBY doesn't have the things i will put into this story, so expect the unexpected. however, criminals will be criminals, good will be good... or will they?

I'm also sorry for the probably bad names of the groups because i'm very indecisive. i gave them names that corresponded with the show and the teams they led, so i hope i didn't do too bad on those.

Sorry for the long A/N, but i hope you enjoy this inkling of a story! i'm not sure how this'll go because i have the tendency of letting my story write itself, and i am simply the pen, providing the ink (as i mentioned at the top of this.)

Below will be information that you need to know before moving forth. i'll probs have these when there's certain shortcuts or whatnot that i added.

NTK (Need to Know) -

All packs have certain names for their general pack members, no matter what rank they are, unless they're the Alpha, of course. For example, the Alpha Rose pack has "Rosebud(s)" when referring to their pack members. Names will vary depending on the pack.

Enjoy:)! this will probably be slow burn, but i wouldn't say... slow, slow.

Chapter 1: Off the Path

The leaves crunched beneath soft paws, fur pitch black and tinged with a rosy red. A red cape behind streamed, a certain wind constantly lifting it from the air. More paws followed after, sunny yellow chasing behind that of the black fur and red cape. Their coats were shiny, whether shining a similar black or blotched with a bark brown. The sun seemed to trail the pack, their snouts sniffing the ground, searching for something. The breeze was warm. It seemed that spring was beginning to slowly turn to summer, even so, their was a certain chill to the air that made everything seem ever colder.

Their pace was fast, and their ears were pressed to their heads. They all seemed on edge, eyes darting left and right, especially that of the caped leader. Though lithe, she had a strength to her that was undefinable, her silver eyes holding a secret. Beneath her coat was a muscular build, but her outward build could not compete to the towering yellow wolf beside her, lilac eyes searching the sky and looking worriedly over at her leader.

"Ruby," her voice came, a low growl escaping the yellow wolf's throat, nevertheless, it was a gentle growl. "Let's just head back." She trotted over to the caped wolf, nudging her with her shoulder.

Ruby met her lilac eyes with a whine. "Yang..." she began, voice higher than the former. Her wolfish features scrunched up in contemplation before she visibly relaxed. "Alright... We'll come back some other time, but let's get food first."

Her sister huffed before nodding. The pack seemed to follow, taking the lead of Ruby, who was going a bit too fast for a lot of them to keep up. Eventually, she slowed down, tail still wagging happily at the thought of food. Everyone had already gone into their respective places, paws inaudible as they hit the ground. Ruby then nodded, motioning to her pack as her silver eyes locked on a herd of deer. She spotted the larger of the two and remained close to the ground. Yang trotted quietly beside her and had a certain glint in her eyes, that of excitement and suppressed anticipation.

While the rest of the pack had set off to attack a different group of deer, Yang and Ruby dealt with the biggest of the group, which wasn't that big compared to them. They stood as large as 5-7 feet, and that was on all fours. Yang was at a solid 7 foot, perhaps more, and Ruby sat at a smaller 6.

Reaper Wolves

The two and the pack were Reaper Wolves, born from the very roots of the legendary Reaper; their very name came from her. Reaper was said to have made a deal with Life and Death, given the power to create the Reaper Wolves as a way to protect her forests, including the life in it, all around the world.

What she offered them was a mystery that many had tried to solve, but the effort died out as years went by and fear grew in the hearts of both humans and the wolves. Most of their existence was forgotten, but their numbers steadily grew, and they slowly learned about humans and their ways.

Due to their increasing population, Reaper expressed her concerns to Life and Death. She feared that humans would be too cruel to handle their existence, and she needed to be able to mask her creatures to fit in with humans. So Life and Death agreed, seeing the greedy and vulnerable hearts of many humans, and they gave Reaper's creatures the power to transform—shapeshift, as they called it.

Thus, the Reaper Wolves were given the ability to become closer to humans and still remain hidden. However, a few humans found out and rambled to many about their discoverings. While they were mostly ignored, there were others who were more lenient to believe them. They rose and many became mad, starting groups of discoverers they deemed the "Seers," though they saw nothing of the future. Some Seers were kind, only wanting to know more about the species, but other Seers were less than hospitable and innocent.

Those who were decreed evil were known as the "Whitefang," while the kind ones were known as "Huntsmen/Huntresses," though, they thought of themselves as hunters of knowledge, they also taught themselves a bit of combat. The two were in a constant stalemate, but the Whitefang's existence was accompanied with corrupt beasts... Reaper Wolves gone just as mad: Grimm.

However... that's another story.

Present

Ruby nudged her sister, a small graze of her tail. A low growl escaped Yang's throat of affirmation, and she moved quietly around the buck, enough not to spook it. They were well acquainted with hunting, and while they could've used their weapons, they had an inner animal in them that far surpassed the humanity. That was not to say that they had less morality.

Once Yang gave a smooth flick of her tail, Ruby inched closer, Yang following the same movement. The buck seemed to notice their presence, but it couldn't move fast enough to avoid the sharp, piercing fangs of Ruby, knocking it down into the grass. Yang bit down into its throat to finish off, and once it had died—a mere few seconds—she lifted it up on her back. It was nothing but a feather to her, and quite frankly, it didn't take two of them to finish simple deer off. In fact, her pack came running back to them, five other deer on a few other wolves.

Their hunts were often plentiful, but they made sure to keep their prey's population intact, hunting and preserving their food. Thus, the forest attracted many creatures, well acquainted with the cycle of life. They trusted the wolves to leave them unbothered 'less it was for a certain, valid purpose. It was a system, a system that every wolf had followed, and if they strayed, they would become unofficial targets. Often, the wolves would protect other animals from each other, occasionally hunters who were hunting too much to their taste. They created a serene balance of life and death, much to the pleasure of Reaper—though, Reaper never showed her physical form to just any of her wolves. The few who did see her were known to be legends who later were called "Remnants," and their pack would become well known to every other pack. Their encounters had never gone unnoticed, no matter how hard one tried to hide it. There was a certain smell on the wolf that had met Reaper, and the greater the scent, the stronger their connection with Reaper was.

Ruby nodded, satisfied with their kills. Her tail wagged happily, and her pack shared her joy, used to their leader's infectious personality. She barked out commands to follow her back, all of them howling back in understanding. Their home wasn't far, well, they didn't much call it a home as it was a place they stayed. After all, the whole forest was their home. Each pack had their own section of the forest as well, and while they could be territorial, the packs usually treated each other like their own pack members. Reaper had made it clear that they would not harm one another unless it was for self defense. Needless to say, the whole forest was made up of pack alliances, and with each forest, there was the leading pack. The strongest pack. The chosen pack.

"Great hunting everyone! Perhaps we'll explore further tomorrow and find what we were looking for," Ruby howled. Her pack howled back, dispersing into their caves and homes, some personally greeting Ruby with thanks. A few members came up to Yang and Ruby from their homes and seemed to accumulate a crowd, but a few guard wolves settled them down.

Once all the commotion came to a hush, Yang and Ruby set down the collected deer into the hunting pile. A young man with a pink streak down their hair thanked them with a soft voice. Right beside him was an orange-headed girl, equal of age and a large grin on her face. Ruby and Yang simultaneously switched from their wolf forms and greeted the two.

"Yang! Ruby!" the orange haired girl shouted, dropping her large axe next to her larger hammer-like weapon and wrapping her arms around the two. Her eyes were wide when she locked her eyes on them, as if she was seeing a gift, green orbs filled with a passionate flame ever so friendly.

The young man that was beside her approached them, choosing not to embrace but still had a warm smile on his face. "Hello there, Yang and Ruby," he greeted, tone just as friendly. His pink eyes seemed to shine dully, but they held a certain amusement and welcoming glint when they met the others' gazes.

"Ren and Nora!" Ruby exclaimed, almost as loudly as Nora. She lifted the orange-haired girl into the air and set her back down, both of their spirit lifted even higher. They went into a fit of giggles as Yang lifted both of them as well, exclaiming her own joy to greet them.

"How was the search, you two?" Ren asked, calmly. He watched as the group of girls eagerly hugged each other then turned to him, a small smile on his lips that held a larger amount of amusement than he truly showed. Of course, they were used to the young man's personality. He was quiet, most like a ninja, but he was also skilled when it came to blades, which meant he had a certain affinity to cooking.

Nora, on the other hand, was a much more outwardly spirited girl. She was more of the brute force when it came to the duo, quite the opposite of Ren. However, the two seemed to have a thing going on that Nora often described as being "together but not together together." They were sort of the unofficial but official couple of the pack, and while there were others, they were just the most... intriguing. Amusing.

Ruby huffed, running a hand through her black hair, the tinges of red matching that of the fire that peaked beneath the grill's bars. "Well, we didn't find what we were looking for..." Her voice was somber but more annoyed than anything. Though, her demeanor quickly changed in a second, a wide smile on her lips. "We did have a plentiful hunt, though!" She took a glance over at the pile of deer, ready to be prepped into a mouthwatering meal.

Yang threw an arm around Ruby, ruffling her hair with the other. "This one took some real charge!" she exclaimed, a laugh escaping from her lips. "You were the best, baby sister!" Ruby squirmed from her grip, a frown set on her lips.

"Yang!" Ruby groaned, pushing her blonde-headed sister off her, struggling to do so but eventually released from her prison of a grip.

After a bit more of small talk with the duo, Yang nudged her sister. Ruby looked puzzled for a minute before realization hit her. They waved farewell to the two and headed toward a moderately large building. Four guards, all in their wolf forms, stood stiffly but readily. When Ruby and Yang approached, they quickly bowed before told to rise.

Ruby walked with a bounce to her step, only normal when it came to the girl. Yang had always found her a joy to have, but she wasn't a dunce. Somewhere in her eyes, there was a certain sadness.

They spent the whole day searching for a blade. It was Summer's—Ruby's mother and Yang's stepmother—and she had lost it during a hunt. Yang recalled fond memories of Summer, and she knew how much Summer meant to her baby sister. She was burdened with the pressure of living up to her mother's legacy. Her own mother, however...

Ruby tapped her sister's shoulder, pulling her from her thoughts. The two had come to realize, at one point, that they only had each other to truly rely on. Their pack was their family, and they needed to take care of each other to be able to take care of the pack. The pack they called the Alpha Rose pack.

They did have a leader after Summer's passing. Their father, Taiyang "Tai" Xiao Long, had taken over for a short time. However, he also suffered a fate that ended in Reaper's arms. He was killed—murdered—by the Whitefang. It was much similar to Summer's death, except he knew what he was getting into. Unfortunately, they ended up cornering him, separated him from the rest of the pack he was off with. Everyone came back but him. He was the sole target.

After Tai's passing, Qrow, Ruby and Yang's uncle, was next to take over, but he refused to be the Alpha. He knew he wasn't fit and was often seen as a rogue, mostly because he would be gone for weeks at a time, sometimes months. So, he consulted with his two nieces and Ozpin, the elder of the forest. While Ozpin and Qrow didn't get along too well, he put his trust in Ozpin to choose a leader. Thus, Ruby was given the role.

It was an unexpected thing; much of the pack had already made up their minds that it was Yang next to take over. Nobody expected it except for Yang, Ren, and Nora. Even Ruby had thought it would go to her older sister. Nevertheless, she was warmly accepted as the Alpha, though some had doubted her abilities. After a few moons of being Alpha, she showed off her power and proved to her pack that she was worthy.

Yet she couldn't prove that to herself.

This time, it was Yang's turn to pull her sister from her thoughts. They finally made their way to a large door. It was a dark red with a rose emblem, looking almost like it came from a tree. However, the door was made from a strong metal. Atop it read "Conference Room."

Ruby placed a hand on the side of the door where it read her print. A robotic voice welcomed her, and she didn't waste time stepping in, Yang following suit. Inside of the room was spacious, a large table in the middle with seats pulled out from it. The floor looked just as natural as the door, and the same rose emblem was smack dab in the middle of it all. At one time, Ruby would've been in awe, advanced technology with a natural air being quite a rare thing to see. However, she was accustomed to the extravagance of it all. Quite frankly, she was glad it wasn't any bigger than it already was, for she never was fond of big buildings.

She could've been happier if it was smaller, actually.

Her attention then turned to the men and women gathered around the table. All eyes were on her and Yang, following them as they both made their way to the table. Ruby sat at the head of the said table, and Yang sat to her immediate right.

"Ruby Rose, I'm glad you agreed to this meeting," a young woman had said. She sat to the immediate left of her. Her red hair seemed to flow slightly in the air before meeting back at her shoulders.

"Pyrrha Nikos, Alpha of the Golden Knights, it was no trouble at all." Ruby's tone was formal, but there was a warm hint in her voice. She had known Pyrrha since she was a pup, having looked up to the young woman and trained with her, side by side. She was a graceful combatant, and she was an even better pack leader. Due to their close relationship at such a young age, the two remained close and became allies the moment that they could.

Her eyes wandered and met those of a lanky young man beside Pyrrha. Jaune Arc, Alpha of the Emerald Shield pack, though they often went by simply "Emerald." He had scruffy blonde hair and a friendly demeanor. His eyes glanced back and forth from Pyrrha to Ruby, finally settling on the latter. While he still held his awkward aura, he was actually one of Ruby's top informants—and one of her top friends. Ruby was well acquainted with him at a similarly young age as she had known Pyrrha. Though he wasn't the best at combat, he was intelligent and reliable.

A different young man then caught her gaze, hair a similar blonde but build much more muscular than the former. Sun Wukong, Alpha of the Hanging Tree pack. There was a playful glint in his eyes that never seemed to fade. Yang and Ruby both met him only a few years ago, but he quickly became a critical ally. He seemed to be more adapt to trees than he was on the ground, a rare thing when it came to wolves. While they didn't hate climbing, they much preferred to run. Sun, on the other hand, was great at climbing and was able to spot things miles away and pounce on threats. He was an interesting ally to have, for sure. Then again, they all had their certain uniqueness.

Then a curious looking young woman met her gaze. Penny Polendina, Alpha of the Deadbolt pack. She had orange hair and bright green eyes, a friendly smile on her lips. She was their newer ally as well, having ran into Ruby and Yang during a hunt. Her friendly demeanor often made people suspicious, but she was a fiercely loyal ally and friend. She had an abundance of skills, her main one to the alliance being her knowledge on humans and technology. A lot of the tech that the Rosebuds had had come from Penny as a gift, which they paid back fully depending on the extremity.

The last one at the table was a tall brunette, a beret on her head topped off with sunglasses that shaded her eyes. Coco Adel, Alpha of the Caffeine pack. Yang and Coco had a sort of friendly rivalry, Nora being included. Her outward demeanor tended to be calm or laidback, but she was a passionate fury on the frontlines, hunt or battles. She was known to be able to cut down countless enemies, no matter what they were, and her hate mainly revolved around humans.

Pyrrha cleared her throat and set her hands on the table, gently tugging Ruby's attention. "The Whitefang are at large, and they have been caught slaughtering pack members," she stated, a pensive look on her face. "While they haven't gone after us specifically..." A hesitant glance was sent towards Ruby around the table as she spoke. "They're getting closer and more dangerous. We will have to take action eventually."

"We need to take action quickly," Coco added, tone stern but not commanding.

Silence enveloped the room, and a comforting hand reached Ruby's. Yang's lilac eyes clashed with Ruby's silver, a certain warmth to them. Ruby swallowed nervously, though her mouth was growing dry. They knew the topic made her uncomfortable... angry. She closed her eyes for a moment then locked her gaze on Pyrrha.

She hesitated to speak, voice a tad strained. "You're right. You're both right." Her gaze turned to Jaune. "Jaune, we're counting on you and your pack to send us information about where they are. Then we'll begin stirring up a plan."

Jaune nodded, a confident look on his face. "I've got your back, Ruby."

Ruby smiled tiredly in response to the blonde. She then turned to Penny. "Penny, please send us what you think would be vital. I trust your decision."

A hum came in response. "It'll be my pleasure, friend Ruby." Her quirky responses put Ruby at an odd ease. All of her friends seemed to have that effect on her.

After a few more strings tied up, they all nodded unanimously, and relief flooded a few of their faces. The others remained with mixed expressions, uncertainty. Yang shot Ruby a look, secret glances between the two that seemed to hold conversations at a time.

Ruby released a breath she didn't know she was holding and got up. "Well then, why don't we all have dinner before you all go. After all, it'd be unwise to start your trek back on an empty stomach." She felt her stomach rumble, further proving her own hunger. A blush crept onto her face, and the others couldn't help but smile.

As the group caught up with each other's individual lives, they made their way out the building and down to a wide area, wolves littered around, all in small talk and conversation. The group of Alphas—aside from Yang—drew attention from the Rosebuds, after all, allies never met at the same time unless it was critical.

To rest the growing uneasiness in her pack members, Ruby announced that dinner would begin momentarily and they would all be caught up soon. While it did little to keep their negative thoughts at bay, the Rosebuds did keep themselves busy.

Yang wrapped an arm around Ruby's neck once again as they all sat down on logs they chose to use as seats. Though, her hold was more gentle this time. A sigh escaped the blonde's lips. "How you holding up, Rubes?" she asked, well aware of her baby sister's growing concerns.

Ruby's lips were in a thin smile, not meeting her sister's eyes. "I've been better..." Her voice wavered. "Yang... there's no other way?" she said, more asking and trying to convince herself with her own words.

Yang bit her tongue, keeping her reply to herself. Ruby knew her answer.

"So what have your packs been up to?" Ruby asked, looking up to meet the Alphas' eyes. They all had worried looks on their faces, but they decided to distract each other with small talk.

Pyrrha spoke up first, "We're all making progress in combat, and a lot of it is thanks to your members helping us out."

Ruby recalled sending a few of her top soldiers to train and train with Pyrrha's pack. She was glad to know that there were little to no hiccups. Quite frankly, she found her soldiers came back better as well. "It's not problem at all! In fact, my soldiers learned a lot from yours, too." Yang had pointed out to her their advances during training, having realized they came back more tactical and precise than they used to be. Their training was often revolved around speed and strength, so she was ecstatic to find her Rosebuds could learn equally from the Knights and learn things they didn't quite cover completely.

Penny answered after. "I've gathered further knowledge on human technology and human living! The species is gradually evolving, but I have the necessary resources and intel to advance further than they can as of now."

They all praised Penny on her hard work, knowing that they couldn't do a lot of what they did without her tech. After a bit more sharing, Ren informed Ruby that the feast was done and ready to be served. She thanked him before standing and gaining the attention of the Rosebuds.

"Everyone, our dinner will soon commence, and you'll all wait no longer!" she announced, loud enough for everyone to hear. The tension seemed to die down, and they all happily cheered. Ruby sat back down and felt her stomach rumble more. "I can't wait for food..." she groaned, causing a fit of giggles around the Alpha group.

Once their meal arrived, the smell wafting through the area and causing all their mouths to water, stomachs growling in anticipation. As customary, the Alphas were given their foods first. They waited for the rest of the pack to gain theirs out of good will, but nobody ate until Ruby had.

The caped leader dug in hungrily, and the other Alphas followed suit. After them, the rest of the pack was free to dine. Ren and Nora sat by the group with their food, something they had grown accustomed to as well. Though, they usually only had one Alpha to sit with and not six at a time. Nevertheless, they were all friends, so it didn't discourage them.

Once Ruby was down with her food, which was very quickly, she praised Ren and awaited her group to finish as well.

Yang grinned, a playful look in her eyes. "Wow, sis, you really wolfed that down!" she said, amused with herself. Almost all the others around her groaned simultaneously, immune to the blonde's jokes. Nora and Penny, however, found her quite entertaining, even after all this time. Fits of giggles sounded from the group, all of it from the two orange-haired women.

Seeing that they were all done eating, and having successfully avoided more of Yang's horrible puns, Ruby stood up and gathered attention once more. While most everyone was done eating, those who weren't simply paused.

"As you all see, there was a meeting today with all of our allies. This is a very rare occurrence, of course, so I understand the tension and unease around us. The few rumors are true; the meeting very well had to do with the Whitefang." Ruby's voice was strong and steady, though she hesitated when speaking the name of the group. She always found herself uncomfortable whenever the topic was about them. Nevertheless, she continued, still standing her ground and fighting her voice. "While the details are confidential, I will say that we will be training harder. There will be necessary changes, and you'll all be seeing the Alphas or their pack members a lot more." Once she was satisfied, she nodded and dismissed them. Most of the Rosebuds stuck around, but a few went back to their houses or caves, most going to mull things over or out of weariness. She couldn't blame them and felt a twinge of jealousy. Relaxing was never something she could do since she became the Alpha.

"Great work, Ruby," Yang stated, giving an encouraging pat on the back to the young leader. Ruby gave her a tired looking smile, but she could see a sort of weight lifting off her, and that put her mind at enough ease.

The Alphas stood up, walking to a path that was the entrance and one of the exits of the pack's dwelling. Ruby led them out, a smile on her lips but a conflicted expression hidden with complacency. The guards lowered to the Alphas before given the permission to rise.

Ruby hummed, turning to the Alphas. "It was nice seeing you all again," she said, voice soft. "I'll be seeing more of all of you, though, I do wish they were for better reasons." A pang of guilt could be felt as she spoke. She knew none of it was her fault. Hell, she didn't even ask for the meeting, but she knew it was necessary.

They all agreed and gave each other hugs for farewell. Their own guards were waiting outside of the entrance, conversing with one another until noticing their Alphas with a bow. Ruby watched as they all disappeared into the thick of the forest. The sun was still peeking, and she hoped their journey back was safe. She hated having to hold meetings so late, always fearing that her comrades would be harmed. While she would've offered them a place to stay, she knew they wouldn't have taken her offer, simply due to their obligations as Alphas to their own packs.

Yang, Ren, and Nora were still at Ruby's side, all walking back to the inside of their main territory. Eventually, they all said their goodbyes, Ren and Nora leaving together to their own house—well, cave. The two chose to live together, the same way they did when they were little.

The two sister did the same, their own cave being the biggest. Five guards were at the entrance, and they bowed before letting the two in and the tech door shut. It had the same design as the door at the conference room. The sun was already down, and their eyes adjusted to the dark easily, seeing as if the sun was still shining, perhaps a bit more dull. They broke off into their own rooms with quick good nights and an embrace.

Ruby's room was littered with pictures, and a few plush toys that she gathered from the city and towns she had visited were laying on her bed. The whole room smelled like roses, but she never did catch that scent as much as the others seemed to. It was her scent that followed her, after all.

Yang's room was neater than that of her baby sister's. A few pictures were on her shelf, and some clothes laid out on her bed. Other than that, her room was tidy and organized, something most people didn't see coming. There was a sort of warmth in the room that never seemed to cease.

Ruby slept restless, tossing and turning before she could find the hold of slumber. She delved into a white, cold dream. Blue eyes, the smell of fresh snow, cold yet warm touch. A feminine voice caused her ears to twitch—she was still in her wolf form. The voice sounded like winter bells, calling out for her... but for what? How do you know my name? The voice didn't answer, and the scene faded back to white.

Yang, on the other hand, flew above a warm, black sky. Amber eyes, lurking shadows, and a broken facade with lost memories. A pair of eyes seemed to be watching her, and she approached the moon warily, as if it would show her what she couldn't see. There was a cry for... help? I'm coming to help you! But before she could hear the reply, the dream faded to black.
