"Are you happy now?"
Olivia nodded yes. They were settled on the plane. She was nervous and giddy. Maya was tired but seeing Olivia smile was worth the tiredness. She could sleep a few hours on the plane.
"Mom, can we travel more when you're not working?"
Maya laughed, "I know you think I'm superhuman Livvie, but I need sleep."
"You can sleep in hotels. I want to see the world."
"And you can see the world with your friends when you have a career and paid vacations."
"Do you believe in soulmates?"
"No."
It was a dumb question, and Olivia already knew Maya's answer. Her marriage to Eli made her cynical about love. Maya worked and provided for Olivia. Anything else was a waste of time.
"Fitz is my soulmate. We share a birthday."
"That's cute."
"I didn't meet him on social media."
Olivia didn't think when the words left her lips. Maya waited for her to continue.
"Do you believe magic is real?"
"Livvie what are you saying?"
"Nothing...I can't explain it."
"How did you meet Fitz?"
"We met in the mirror."
"What?"
"The antique mirror. I know it sounds crazy."
"Livvie, do you know my department?"
"I know you're a psychiatric nurse."
"You really shouldn't joke like that."
"You're right. That wasn't funny. Our connection is like magic."
"You are not going to camp in New York."
"That's fine. I can visit his city next year when I'm 18."
"I want you to make your own choices. I won't make you follow my rules when you're an adult."
"Thank you."
Maya smiled, "You can stuff yourself with junk food this weekend."
"Thank you!"
Maya looked out the window and thought about herself at 17. A few months before her 18th birthday she met Eli. She hoped Olivia would be smarter and stay single until she finished college.
