"Have you joined a club yet?" Asked Kaede Kageyama, a first year at Kitagawa Daiichi and Tobio's twin sister. The two were out in the garden as usual, passing a volleyball between themselves. Their parent's had sent them outside to get them out of the way whilst they discussed things that the two were too young to comprehend.

Tobio grinned, brushing his raven hair out of his face as his sister caught the ball. "Yep! The volleyball team! Just like you!"

"The girl smiled at his enthusiasm. "You think you can receive this, right?" She asked hesitantly. Despite having played this game together for years there was no denying that she could spike the ball harder than he could and the last thing she wanted was to dampen Tobio's mood with a spike he wouldn't be able to receive.

"Yep!" He nodded excitedly, crouching down as he had been taught to do many years ago when they were first taught by their grandpa.

Kaede walked away, far enough so she could aim accurately towards him before she threw the ball into the air and slammed it down towards her brother.

The blue eyed boy attempted desperately to bring the ball back up but failed miserably as it bounced off of his arms as a weird angle and slapped him in the face, knocking him backwards onto the ground.

Kaede Kageyama burst into a fit of laughter at his failed attempt of a receive and tumbled backwards onto the grass clutching at her aching stomach. Her brother just scowled at her, rubbing his chin where the ball had hit. "Shut up Kaede." He stomped his foot angrily, glaring down at his twin. "I'll get it next time! Stop laughing at me!" But it was an impossible task to stop laughing, after a while she finally inhaled shakily and stood up, watching as he turned to grab the ball and pass it back to her. "Again!" He ordered.

"Of course." She replied.

This was when Tobio had finally begun to truly fall in love with volleyball.

The young boy had begun to use every spare second he had to practice passing, receiving and setting the ball which obviously meant that Kaede had been dragged along too, not that she complained. She was almost as much of a volleyball fanatic as he was.

She had to admit though, he was improving at a rather surprising rate, though she figured she shouldn't have been so shocked, he did have Oikawa and Iwaizumi as his senpai.

Kaede herself was rather good friends with the pair, they had bonded after meeting when she had attended one of their practices. The girl's team was having a day off and she didn't hesitate to tag along to see how her brother was getting on. Kitagawa's captain and spiker had taken a liking to her despite how they may have treated her twin at any other time.

He had taken a liking to the setter position early on, similar to her but she had soon decided after trying it with multiple different spikers, that it was too difficult to put the ball exactly where it was needed and the idea of being able to break through a block with a powerful spike was becoming more appealing. The added fact that she had grown up ambidextrous was a bonus to this decision and she quickly became accustomed to using both hands to slam down the shaky sets he gave her.

"One day, Kaede," He began as the two took a break from their three hour practice that day. "I will become the best setter in Japan!"

She just giggled at his remark but stood up next to him, holding her fist out towards him. "And I will be the best spiker!"

Once again the girl's team had taken the day off of practice and so Kaede made herself comfortable at the side of the room to watch her brother and friends - as she now called them - practice.

The coach was surprisingly happy to have her there and he often asked for her assistance in helping the boys receive left handed spikes as they didn't have anyone who could do it in her place.

"Kageyama-Chan!" Oikawa called once practice was finished and the team had cleared the gym away, Iwaizumi tailed behind his friend and smiled warmly at her.

"I told you to drop the honorifics, Oikawa, just call me Kageyama." She insisted again, though it was a futile attempt. He never listened. "Anyway, I know it won't be long until you move schools, so I wanted to go for food somewhere if you want too? Mother gave me some money so it's all on me." She smiled, always having been the more mature of the Kageyama siblings.

Oikawa cooed and slung his arm over her shoulder, grinning widely. "Of course Kage-Chan!" That earned him a slap on the back of the head from Iwaizumi but he continued regardless. "Lead the way!"

She only stopped to tell her brother to head home without her and that she wouldn't be long before she was being dragged away by the captain who was overly excited with the promise of food.

Then came Tobio's third year at Kitagawa Daiichi.

He had practiced nonstop for years, working his way to become what he had promised all those years ago, but his dreams had been crushed after his final junior school game when he had been put back on the bench, his entire team refusing to hit a set he put up for them.

That was when he finally understood how controlling he had become and he vowed to himself that he would never take advantage of the game like that ever again.

Now though, after years of playing volleyball, he practiced alone in the garden, using the house wall as a rather sorry excuse of a partner.

The setter used the short break between term time to improve his skills in any way he could. He had to know that he would be the best setter there could be. He had to make sure that he was needed on the next team he joined. He had to know that they wouldn't need to put him back on the bench.

He just had to play.

And so he used every breathing second he had to pass the ball to himself, set it to a bottle on the ground or to receive it after bouncing it off of the wall.

The only thought that ran through his mind as he repeated the drills over and over again was 'I have to be the best setter there is'.
