Hey People, I've been writing on and off for a while but with the lockdown going on, I finally have time to write. Granted, it's not ideal circumstances because my original plans for a trip to California this month has gone out of the window, but the situation is what gave me the idea for this story in the first place.

Anyway… on with the story!

Friday- April 10th- Providence, RI-7:00am, Eastern Time

For the most part, Friday morning at the Cruz house was the same old thing, except for this particular day. The alarm clock on the nightstand next to Hector's bed blared loudly, waking up his dog, Uno. The mixed breed canine began to bark loudly, trying to alert his human about the noise.

Shortly after, Hector's mother entered the room.

"Hector, it's seven, are you up?" she asked.

"Five more minutes." Hector answered in a drowsy tone, covering his face with a blanket as he tried to block out the morning sunlight coming from a nearby window.

"Ok, then, I guess don't mind missing out on your school field trip." Said Mrs. Cruz.

No sooner did she finish her sentence; Hector was now on high alert.

"That's today?!" he asked, now sitting up.

"Last time I checked, yes." His mother replied, leaning against the doorway.

"Guess I better get going," Hector sighed as he looked at the floor.

"I'd say so," Mrs. Cruz said with a smile and left the room to allow her son to get himself together.

Hector collapsed back onto his bed after he was sure his mother was gone.

Uno let out a sharp bark, which alerted Hector once more.

"All right, I'm up!" he said before getting up. As much as Hector loved his dog, Uno occasionally got on his nerves. However, he wasn't the only one having a hard time this morning.

Elsewhere, a certain white blood cell was in the same boat. Dander, Drix's pet dog barked loudly which annoyed his owner's roommate.

Ozzy, also known as Osmosis Jones, groaned at hearing Dander's constant barking.

"Knock it off," Ozzy muttered, covering his head with a pillow.

Dander simply ignored him and barked once more. Currently, he was sitting at the foot of Ozzy's bed trying to wake him up. Finally, the blood cell came around.

"Dander, do you know what time it is?" he asked as he rubbed his eyes.

The mixed breed dog simply tilted his head, not sure how to react.

"Drix, come get your dog!" Ozzy yelled.

"Do you know what day it is, Ozzy?" Drix asked a moment later after picking up Dander.

"Friday, why?" the blood cell asked, still half asleep.

"Did you forget about Hector's field trip? His class is going to the aquarium." Drix replied.

"Wha? It's field trip day?!" Ozzy sputtered, now fully awake.

"You forgot all about it, didn't you?" Drix asked as he rubbed Dander behind the ears.

"Me? nah…" said Ozzy.

He then lowered his head, noticing the cynical look on Drix's face.

"Ok, maybe I did." He admitted.

The red and yellow cold pill glanced at his roommate with concern.

"Are you all right?" Drix asked.

"Just off, I guess." Ozzy answered, looking downhearted.

"We can talk later."

"Um…sure." Was all Drix could say.

Later that morning…

"The bus is here!" said Hector as he headed for the front door. A quick shower and breakfast later, he was ready for his school field trip.

"Have you got everything?" his Mom asked.

"Yep, camera…money for the gift shop…" Hector stopped short.

"Your jacket?" said Mrs. Cruz who pointed to a dark blue jacket hanging on the coat rack by the door.

Hector groaned and looked at his mother.

"Mom, it's April, do I really need it?" he asked.

"You know how much colder it is near the coast and flu season isn't over yet either." Mrs. Cruz pointed out, folding her arms in front of her chest.

Hector sighed, his mother had brought up a valid point, while he had managed to get through this cold and flu season without getting sick, the risk wasn't worth it.

"Kay," he said before grabbing the jacket and putting it on.

"Have fun," Mrs. Cruz said with a smile.

"Oh, I will. Bye Mom." Said Hector, before he headed out the door, closing it behind him.

A short walk down the driveway later, Hector got on the bus.

"Hector, over here!" his friend Travis called, waving his hand to get the other boy's attention.

Hector sat down near the front of the bus, next to his friend. It was pleasant spring day, the sky outside was clear with the exception of a few cumulous clouds. The trees that lined the street had bright green leaves and blossoms, a common sight for the season. The weather was ideal for a school field trip.

"Hey Travis," Hector greeted him.

"Can you believe it? We're actually going to Boston!" Travis asked, hardly able to contain his excitement.

Hector smiled, the trip had taken three months to plan but it had been worth the wait.

"I know!"

"You guys excited?" Christine asked, leaning over from the seat behind her classmates.

Hector turned around to face her.

"What gave us away?" He asked.

Christine laughed, the smile on Hector's face said it all.

"Forget I asked," she said to him.

Because they were going to the aquarium, the class had been advised to wear something with an ocean theme. Hector's wore a cream colored shirt with a swordfish on the front. Travis's shirt was mint green with silhouettes of sharks as part of the design. Cristine's shirt was light blue with a Killer whale on the front. As the three friends talked, they weren't the only ones having a conversation about the field trip.

On the expressway heading towards the collarbone were Ozzy and Drix. Like every city on Friday morning, traffic was somewhat slow. As a result, this gave the two friends and teammates an opportunity to talk.

"This is so exciting! It's been ages since we've taken a trip," said Drix.

"Yeah, good old Boston…home of the Red Sox and baked beans," Ozzy replied in a dull tone.

"Are you sure you're all right, Ozzy?" Drix asked as he glanced at the cell in the driver's seat.

"Just a lot on my mind," Ozzy answered, not taking his eyes off the road.

"Like?" Drix started to say.

Ozzy sighed, knowing he couldn't avoid it anymore.

"I miss Leah," he admitted.

"Oh," was all Drix could say.

That would explain why Ozzy was so out of character, the entire morning the blood cell had been in a downhearted mood. Not even coffee and a bagel from his favorite shop cheered him up.

"I mean, the city of Hector is great and all but…" Ozzy stopped short.

"Everyone and everything you know was left behind when…" Drix trailed off.

"Yeah," Ozzy sighed, putting on the brakes as he stopped for a moment.

"I understand," said Drix, he hated to see his friend and teammate looking depressed.

If only there was something he could do. They had been living in Hector for about a year now and every once in a while, they talked about their life and friends back in the city of Frank. As time went on, Ozzy began to miss Leah, more and more.

"Just wish I could see Leah again…and Doug, he was one of my best friends. Anyway, nothing I can do now." Said Ozzy before he drove off.

Later….

"So glad it's Friday," Maria sighed.

"Coffee?" Drix offered, holding out a to-go coffee cup that looked similar to Starbucks from the human world.

"Thanks Drix," said Maria as she took the cup from him.

It was her favorite, a mocha carbaccino, very similar to the mocha cappuccino some humans drank. On days when they had work early, Ozzy and Drix often brought coffee and bagels. Maria appreciated it since there were mornings where she didn't have time to grab breakfast or coffee before leaving her apartment. She leaned against a lamppost and sipped her coffee, the light brown liquid quickly warming her up; it was a somewhat chilly morning.

The collarbone was often where she met up with Ozzy and Drix because it was easy to get to from the right shoulder. The area was known for having a large park, that resembled Central Park in New York City.

Maria rubbed her eyes, feeling somewhat tired.

"I've been up since 5:30am," she explained.

"You have?" Drix asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Yeah, had one of those mornings where I just couldn't sleep." Maria replied with a yawn.

She then noticed Ozzy hadn't spoke a word to her other a brief 'good morning'. He sat on a park bench reading the newspaper he brought with him.

"What's up with Ozzy?" Maria asked, before taking another sip of her coffee, hoping the caffeine would wake her up.

"He's homesick," Drix answered.

"Ohh…that explains a lot.. the guy looks bummed." Said Maria.

She and Drix were both out of earshot range, observing Ozzy from a short distance away.

"He is…." Drix replied, regarding his friend's current state.

He let out a frustrated sigh.

"If only I could cheer him up."

"Sorry, can't help you there." said Maria.

For the rest of the morning, the trio were silent. Maria wasn't sure what to do, she wanted to help Ozzy and Drix but this was beyond her. The female blood cell had lived in the city of Hector her entire life, she knew nothing else, Ozzy and Drix were transplants. Then there were the germs and viruses that gradually moved into the city over the years. Most of them had spent time in the human world before finding a more permanent address. Drix occasionally glanced at Ozzy who was still quiet, if only there was something he could do to get the white blood back to his old self. But what?

That afternoon, it would all change.

For the past three hours, Hector and his classmates walked through the various exhibits of the Boston Aquarium. Providence Rhode Island was about an hour or so away, which made for an ideal field trip.

"This aquarium is awesome!" Hector exclaimed.

"I know, right?" said Travis.

"We've only seen half of it so far," Christine pointed out.

The three of them were currently sitting outside. The class had taken a break for lunch which had been provided by the aquarium's café. The outdoor space overlooked the nearby beach and ocean. The clear sky and afternoon sun added on to the already pleasant view.

"True," Hector agreed.

Just then, another student's voice rang out.

"Look, dolphins!"

"Whoa!" Travis exclaimed.

Sure enough, not far away a group of Atlantic spotted dolphins were leaping out of the water.

"C'mon Hector, get your camera." said Christine.

She and Travis quickly got up from their seats and headed over to the otherside of the patio to get a better look.

Hector swallowed the last of his lunch before grabbing his camera.

"Got it!"

He then went to catch up with his friends, hoping to get photos of the dolphins before they left.

Meanwhile…

"And why are we parked here again?" Ozzy asked as he leaned against his car.

"New arrival coming in," Maria answered.

"Mm-hmm," Ozzy muttered.

He and Maria along with Drix were on the far end of the stomach that resembled an airport terminal.

Maria lowered her binoculars and looked at the other blood cell.

"Look Ozzy, Drix told me what's going on. You're homesick and…" Maria was cut off.

"Can't that overgrown Tylenol ever keep his mouth shut?!" Ozzy snapped.

Maria narrowed her eyes and folder her arms in front of her chest.

"Now I know you don't mean that," she said in a serious tone.

Ozzy backpedaled on his statement and lowered his head slightly, giving her a guilty look.

"I'm sorry, Maria. It's just that…I miss Leach and…" Ozzy stopped short.

"You'd really like to see her again." Maria finished.

Ozzy simply nodded.

"I understand. If you ever want talk about it, I'm here and so is Drix." She said, briefly glancing at the cold pill who was just a few feet away.

"Thanks Maria," said Ozzy.

"Anytime," the female cell replied with a smile.

Just then an announcement over the P.A. system got their attention.

"Now arriving, fish and chips."

"That's it." said Maria.

"Drix, we gotta go!" she called.

"Wait up!" was the pill's reply.

A short time later the trio had reached the gate but kept a reasonable distance.

"So far, so good…nothing unusual." said Maria, she was currently watching various germs and bacteria walking into the terminal. For the most part, there didn't seem to be anything suspicious going on.

"No," said Drix who was also watching.

Shortly after, Maria noticed something and was on high alert.

"Wait a second, there's somebody coming." She said as she looked through her binoculars.

"What?!" Drix sputtered.

"Who is it?" Ozzy asked.

"Don't know…wait a second…they're waving to us?" said Maria, confused by the two figures that seemed to be approaching she and her teammates.

"Let me see," said Drix, he grabbed the binoculars to get a better look, forgetting the strap was still around Maria's neck. The female cell coughed in the process.

"Watch it, Drix!" she said to him while trying to get the strap off her neck.

"Sorry," Drix apologized.

He then looked through the binoculars, trying to spot what Maria had seen.

"You're right, they are waving…it's…" Drix stopped and gasped. He quickly recognized the two figures coming closer.

"Ozzy, you've got to see this!"

"See what?" the blood cell asked, sounding confused.

"Well, isn't this a small world," said a familiar voice.

Ozzy's jaw dropped, he blinked twice and couldn't believe what he saw.

"Leah?" he finally said after a brief moment of silence.

"Ozzy?" was her reply.

The two of them froze as they stared at each other but only for a few seconds.

"Whoa!" Ozzy exclaimed.

"It's you!" Leah shouted before dropping her suitcase to hug him.

"But…how?" Ozzy asked once he let go.

"Long story, what are you doing here?" Leah replied.

"Me and Drix got picked up by a mosquito and wound up here." Ozzy explained.

"O…k," was Leah's reply, finding the story somewhat unusual.

"So, it's just you?" Ozzy asked, regarding if Leah came alone.

"Not exactly," said another voice.

Ozzy looked up and saw another familiar face.

"Doug?! You came too?!"

"Sure did, we missed you and Drix." The other cell admitted.

"I've been homesick, thought about both of you and…" Ozzy was interrupted by the sound of Drix's voice.

"Doug! Leah!"

Ozzy looked over his shoulder to see a red and yellow figure coming towards them at a rather quick pace.

"And here comes Drix," Ozzy said as he looked over his shoulder and got out of the way. Last thing he wanted was to be runover by his teammate.

"Hey, it's been a while." Said Doug.

"You got that right," Leah agreed.

She looked around; it was clear they were in a different human body but it seemed to be a far cry from Frank.

"Where are we, anyway?" Leah asked.

"I can explain," Maria offered as she walked over.

"This is the city of Hector…I'm Maria."

Leah looked at the other female blood cell then at Ozzy. She frowned slightly and seemed to be puzzled.

"And you are…?"

"A friend of Ozzy and Drix, they've told me a lot about you." Maria explained.

"Have they?" Leah asked, still looking at Ozzy.

"Uh….yeah," the cell in question replied, throwing in a nervous grin.

"I'm Doug," said the fireman cell, trying to change the subject.

"Nice to meet you," Maria said to him.

"How did you two get here, anyway?"

"Well, after Jones and Drix went missing we filed a report. After three months, the case was closed. I knew a guy who could get us to the outside world and… here we are." Doug explained.

"I never gave up on looking for you." Leah said to Ozzy. She smiled, glad to see him again after so long.

"That's true, she didn't." Doug added.

"Well, I guess we better see about finding you a place to stay." Maria concluded. From what she gathered, Doug and Leah came with only the clothes on their backs and a couple bags of luggage.

"Doug can crash with us and…" Ozzy was once again cut off.

"Leah can stay with you," Drix suggested.

"That'll work." Said Maria.

"Really?" Leah asked in surprise, she had just met this woman and now she was being given the offer to stay at her home.

"Yeah, I don't have a lot of company over. Except my brother Ricky who has a habit of stopping by….unannounced," Maria explained, sounded annoyed at the end of her sentence.

"Don't you just love that?" Leah asked in a sarcastic tone.

Maria laughed.

"I think we're going to get along just fine," she said with a smile.

The two cells had only known each other for a short amount of time and it seemed like things were going well.

"Great," Ozzy groaned as he rolled his eyes.

"Look, as much as I like having you guys as friends, it's nice having another woman to talk to." Said Maria, regarding Ozzy and Drix.

"I heard that," Leah agreed, the two women high fiving one another.

As the five of them walked back to Ozzy's car, it seemed that his dull mood from earlier was completely gone.

"We definitely got some catching up to do." Said Ozzy.

"Yeah," Doug agreed.

"We sure do," Leah said with a nod.

Later…

"How many pictures did you take?" Travis asked as he and Hector walked through the aquarium with the rest of their class.

"Enough to fill an album, there's so much to see here." Said Hector. He was scrolling through the various photos he had taken on his small digital camera.

"Got that right," Travis agreed as he looked around.

They were about to leave another exhibit which was a large tank full of various saltwater fish in a variety of colors and markings.

"Hey guys, last one to the gift shop, isn't paying." Said Christine as she rushed by Hector and Travis.

"No fair! You had a head start!" Travis shouted as he went after her

"Hey, wait up!" Hector called out as he tried to keep up.

Meanwhile…

"Well Drix, you wanted to cheer Ozzy up, then Leah and Doug came….and it looks like it all worked out." Said Maria.

"It certainly looks that way," Drix agreed.

The five of them had gone up to the left ear, it was one of the few places in the city of Hector that had an unblocked view from outside. For the most part, hardly anyone went there, making a good place for Ozzy and the others to talk without anyone eavesdropping.

"So, what are you going to do now?" Ozzy asked after a moment of silence.

Doug and Leah looked at each other then back at Ozzy. Both of them seemed unsure how to answer.

"Don't know," said Doug as he rubbed the back of his head.

"We hadn't got that far." Leah admitted.

"For starters, if you two are gonna stay here, you'll need to start looking for apartments." Maria pointed out.

"And jobs," Drix added.

"Ellen can probably help with that," said Maria.

"Who's Ellen?" Leah asked, raising an eyebrow.

"She's a lawyer and an old friend of mine." Maria explained.

"She's good," Ozzy added.

"Is that so?" Doug asked, he grinned slightly getting an idea.

"You ever tell her about your track record back in the city of Frank?"

Ozzy froze in his tracks as a chill went down his spine.

"I thought we agreed a long time ago not to bring that up anymore." He said to Doug.

"What record?" Maria asked, frowning slightly.

"You don't wanna know." Ozzy answered.

He looked suspiciously at Doug who simply smiled. The fireman hadn't changed a bit, he still got a kick out of messing with Ozzy's head.

"Changing the subject. It's such a nice day…why don't we enjoy the view?" Drix suggested.

"What view?" Ozzy asked.

He then looked up towards the outer part of the ear.

"Ohh,"

For the rest of that afternoon, the four blood cells and cold pill hardly said anything. What they saw outside was a view of part of the aquarium, one of the few times they got an up-close view of what was outside. Saltwater fish and a few sharks swam around the tank, the only thing separating them from everyone was a thick glass wall.

"So, do you think it could get better than this?" Drix asked after a while.

"Nah, Drix. I can't think of a better ending to a nicer day." Ozzy replied with a smile.

As far as he was concerned, nothing could ruin this moment, though this was just the start of a new adventure that was right around the corner…

MORE TO COME…

And that's it for chapter one. This was basically to set up the story but there's a surprise in chapter two and some other plot twists coming up. The next chapter will introduce some new characters plus some other familiar ones, I don't want to give too much away so I'm just going to leave it at that.

Now, some trivia notes:

The title of this chapter, Oceans Apart is a song lyric from 'Right Here Waiting' sung by Richard Marx. If you haven't heard this song, look it up on YouTube, it definitely a fitting theme for a person missing their loved one.

Although Ozzy and Drix animated series was a spin-off of the 2001 animated movie, Osmosis Jones, there wasn't a clear explanation of the series timeline in terms if it was a few months or years after the movie.

The only reason why Providence, Rhode Island is mentioned in this story is because there was a newspaper called the Providence Times in the movie which is probably the city where the human characters live.

Another thing is there was never an explanation of what happened to the other characters in the movie such as Leah and Doug, but that's neither here nor there.

A few quotes in this chapter are parodies from the following: Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Duck Dodgers and Homeward Bound 2: Lost in San Francisco.

Anyway, chapter two is currently in the works, will have it posted in a couple weeks since it's a longer than this chapter.

As always, reviews and feedback are appreciated.

Stay tuned!
