The Cylons were created by Man...

They Rebelled...

They Evolved...

And they have a Plan...

They were machines, robots that had attained sentience and waged war against their creators. They'd originally been manufactured for war and the rolls they had been given. After fighting their creators for twelve years they left the Cyrannus System and headed into deep space. Before they left however they had begun research on creating human Cylons.

They had some success here and there resulting in the creation of twelve biological models numbered One to Twelve, each with its own characteristics. They hoped to create a new biological Cylon race however all twelve models were unable to have children and so they sought a solution. The humans that they'd captured were useful for their research but they needed more, a lot more, and with the armistice there was no way for them to acquire more test subjects.

So the decision was made to search for the long lost thirteenth colony for Kobol where they could harvest more human genetic material for their research. After years of searching they found the ancestral human homeworld of Kobol and later Earth itself. It was a lone planet with a single moon orbiting a yellow star. There were dozens of satellites in orbit along with some space stations however it was nothing compared to the forces that their brethren on the Colonies possessed.

Perfect for harvesting...

"Commence the attack," the One gave the order.

As one the forty-two Type-1 and Type-2 Basestars jumped into orbit of Earth and launched Raiders. Missiles launched from the massive warships and rained down on the surface of the planet, aimed at the largest population centers. Primitive aircraft were launched to intercept them and the large number of Raiders descending into the atmosphere but it was already too late. The missiles struck their targets and detonated, consuming whole cities in nuclear fire.

It was too easy...

Suddenly DRADIS pinged as multiple contacts appeared, each one emitting a radiation signature. The One blinked in confusion as he checked the origin of them. Missiles, some from the surface and others from the orbiting satellites, each one carrying a nuclear warhead. The Raiders kept in reserve launched to intercept them and shot down most of them however several made it through and detonated against their armoured hulls, consuming their armoured hides in nuclear light. Most of the Basestars were blown apart by the nukes however the rest managed to jump just as the missiles hit.

They reappeared above the planet's southern pole at the emergency coordinates and fell, falling through the atmosphere. Moments later they struck the snow-covered ground and carved a number of large valleys through the ice before coming to a stop. The One survived the impact of his Basestar but many others didn't, not that it mattered once he dispatched a hyper-wave message to the rest of the fleet and they sent a bigger force. He'd felt confident that the seemingly non-existent defences of Earth would be easily overwhelmed by his task force however that wasn't the case.

How he hated the humans...

They couldn't just die when they were supposed to...

"These humans are as infuriating as the Colonials," the One sneered in disgust. "Send a message to the rest of the fleet, we need reinforcements."

It was supposed to be simple, conquer Earth and harvest it's population while the rest of the fleet prepared for the inevitable return to the Colonies. That had all gone to hell now with the Earther's counterattack, one that should have never happened. They would have to try and subdue the humans as best they could before reinforcements arrived. The Resurrection fleet was a week away...

No matter...

Despite the setback he was confident that this planet would be conquered within the month...

XCOM Headquarters

Commander Jane Sheppard walked briskly through the concrete corridors of the facility, one that was considered to be above top secret. She'd passed the lab a moment ago and was on her way to what her 'guide' had referred to as the 'Mission Control' room. She hadn't even heard of this place until a few hours ago when she had been called in by her superiors and picked up by a VTOL called a Skyranger for transport to South America. From Britain to Brasil was still a long trip though and the news she'd been going over certainly didn't help.

It had been hell these last few days...

Alien spaceships had shown up in orbit and dropped nuclear bombs on Earth, shot down a bunch of satellites along with the international space station and were even now engaged in combat with the various airforces in the skies above Africa and Asia. Aliens, or at least that's what the reports she'd received had said, were last reported in Antarctica where they were preparing to hit the McMurdo airforce base.

"In here ma'am," spoke to Central Officer John Bradford as he gestured towards the door.

She stepped through the door and into the room beyond. There were monitors everywhere with a large globe hologram-like object in the middle. There were dozens of red and blue dots moving around in the areas over Africa and Asia while Antarctica seemed to be covered in a red haze. Above the globe-the geoscape-was a large monitor with the image of a darkened room and a man sitting at a desk with his face covered in shadow.

"Hello Commander," the spokesman spoke through the monitor. "Welcome to the South American XCOM base."

"XCOM?" Jane inquired.

"In response to the alien threat the United Nations has authorised the activation of the XCOM Project," the spokesman explained. "Otherwise known as the Extraterrestrial Combat Unit, XCOM's directive is simple, safeguard the human race against any and all extraterrestrial threats by any means necessary."

"...What do you want with me?" Jane asked the question.

"You have been chosen to lead the XCOM Project," the spokesman answered.

In other words she was being tasked with either saving the world or to die trying, no pressure then. It was a daunting task and the UN must have been really desperate to call upon her given her record. Then again desperate times call for desperate measures she supposed. To fight against the monsters from outer space another monster was needed, it was a simple as that. And she was a monster...

"I won't let you down," she said finally.

"Good luck Commander," the spokesman nodded before the screen went dark.

Silence...

"Central," Jane spoke sharply. "Sitrep."

"Multiple UFOs sighted over Africa and Asia. Local airforces are being slaughtered out their ma'am," Bradford informed quickly.

"What forces do XCOM have in the area?" Jane questioned further.

"None ma'am," Bradford replied. "We currently have two prototype Interceptors codenamed Ravens in our hangar bay but it'll take them hours to get there."

"Have them prepped and ready to launch. I want both of them in Asia yesterday," Jane ordered. "After they've dealt with the enemy aircraft there have them head for Africa."

Hopefully having the two Ravens together would even the odds against the invaders...

Probably not...

"Yes ma'am," Bradford saluted and went to carry out her orders.

"And have a strike team ready," Jane added. "We're going hunting."

It was time to see what kind of enemy they were facing...

Skyranger-1 flew through the skies over the Antarctic faster than any conventional jet in the world, its engines pushing it faster than anything previously developed by any nation. Only the Raven-class interceptors were faster and they were designed to be less get-troops-to-the-combat-zone and more of shoot-down-anything-that-flies.

For Delta Squad this wasn't what they had thought would happen when they were reassigned by their respective governments to the secretive XCOM Project, a supposedly black ops program created as the first and last line of defence not only for individual countries but the entire human race. Now aliens from outer space were here and they'd already nuked half of Earth from orbit before the equally as secretive orbital weapon satellites and surface-to-space missile batteries could take them out.

So much for the Outer Space Treaty...

"LZ is hot!" the pilot shouted from the cockpit. "Get ready to drop!"

As one Delta Squad flicked off the safeties in their rifles and hung onto the railings as the Skyranger came in for a landing. It dropped down as the ramp lowered and the squad jumped out. The moment they were clear the Skyranger flew upwards and away just as the first of the enemies came into view, a large lumbering humanoid machine carrying some kind of futuristic rifle straight out of the Terminator films. Unlike the human-shaped machines from the films however this thing only had the one bright red eye moving back and forth through a visor. McMurdo Airforce Base wasn't the most heavily armed facility in the world but the defenders were still putting up a fight. Lieutenant Geoff Robertson codenamed Delta-1 was the first to react, firing a burst from his assault rifle at the machine, riddling it with bullets. It staggered as the rounds tore into it but didn't go down until the rest of the squad followed suit.

"What's your status Delta?" they heard Bradford ask through the radio.

"Target neutralised," Geoff responded as they all took cover near the downed machine. "It's a robot sir."

"A robot?" Bradford questioned.

"It's not exactly Arnold Schwarzenegger but they're tough," Geoff informed.

"Contact left!" shouted Delta-4 otherwise known as Sergeant Ayaka Matsumoto.

She'd spotted another of the robots appearing from the direction of the barracks and immediately raised her rifle. She pulled the trigger and shot it in the chest, the bullets sparking as they penetrated it's armoured hide. Juan Carlos Pena codenamed Delta-2 quickly added his own fire, unloading a short controlled burst into the machine's head. It staggered under the assault and then collapsed backwards, its rifle falling to the ground beside it.

"Delta-3 move up," Geoff ordered as he motioned forward. "Everyone else stay in overwatch."

Delta-3 though most people knew him as Maxim Malakhov rushed forward, taking cover at the corner of the barracks, his rifle raised and ready. Just then another two robots rounded the corner no doubt responding to the gunfire and caught sight of him. Short controlled bursts from the rest of the squad echoed throughout the area as they gunned the robots down.

"Clear!" Maxim yelled as he checked around the corner.

More would be coming...

"Delta Squad," Bradford spoke through the comm. "Be advised we have Skyranger-2 inbound on your position."

"Negative Central," Geoff responded. "Area is too heavy."

Not only was the place swarming with alien robots but he could see a pair of those fighter-sized UFOs on the horizon and closing fast. The base's anti-air defences were down otherwise they would have already shot them down making him wonder if they had already been taken out. Idly he noted that the base's personnel and a bunch of civilians were fleeing in the opposite direction, no doubt heading for the sea where the navy could pick them up.

"Delta Squad, this is the Commander," a decisively female voice spoke clearly. "Collect the robots and their weapons. Fallback to the LZ and hold your position. There are too many of them to deal with and we don't have the forces in the area to do so."

"Roger that Commander," Geoff confirmed. "Delta-4 move up and secure the robots with Delta-3. Delta-2 and I will cover you."

They nodded in understanding and quickly carried out their orders. Several more robots appear but Geoff and Juan quickly gunned them down before they could take a firing position or get into cover. Finally after the rest of the robots were dragged over Skyranger-2 arrived as more of them showed up. Skyranger-1 was right behind it and spewed hundreds of rounds down from its forward mounted mini-gun on the seemingly limitless horde of robots approaching their position.

Delta Squad threw the damaged robots and their weapons into the back of Skyranger-2 and climbed aboard as Skyranger-1 unleashed a barrage of air-to-surface missiles to keep the invaders pinned. Finally after what felt like an eternity both Skyrangers ascended back into the air and headed away from the base. Those still left in the base fled soon after as the base was overrun by the robot army.

"We're clear."

Bradford watched apprehensively as the icons indicating both Skyrangers were on their way back, narrowly avoiding a pair of alien fighters that were coming in from the direction of Africa. Already they were getting reports of people fleeing Antarctica either by ship or by plane.

"Delta Squad is on their way back," Bradford informed. "ETA three hours."

"As soon as they land have them report to my office," Jane said clearly. "Have a team take the robots and their weapons down to the lab. I want to know what we're dealing with sooner rather than later."

"Yes Commander," Bradford nodded at the order.

Jane narrowed her eyes at the geoscape, specifically the areas of Asia and Africa. One of the icons flashed once and then disappeared signifying that one of the two Ravens had been shot down. Thankfully the rest of the alien fighters had broken off and were heading for Antarctica where the remains of their fleet had landed. Hopefully the United Nations could pull themselves together and run damage control. There was heavy radiation in several areas centered around North America and Europe due to the nuclear strikes in the area.

She would need to speak with the UN soon...

"Recall Raven-2 and launch Skyranger-3 to recover Raven-1," Jane ordered. "I want it refuelled and ready for redeployment as soon as possible."

Author's Notes:
Hello everyone and welcome to what I hope to be my first attemtp at an XCOM fanfic. I've had this idea in my head for awhile and it's something I've kept going back to. It was actually fun to write and as you can tell XCOM here has taken certain liberties with the Outer Space Treaty.
