A/N: I think I'm coming down with something and I've been feeling extra mellow lately... and well, this just happened. I hope you enjoy reading it, let me know if you'd like to see more of it.

a place to belong

Harvey calls out to Donna the moment he walks through the door. Getting no reply from her, he quickly checks upstairs in case she didn't hear him coming home, and there she is, or rather, there are her tresses of fiery red hair splayed out messily all over her pillow. He can't see much of her. She's buried beneath the fluffy covers of their bed, not showing any sign that she heard him.

"Hey." He sits down and nudges her lightly, and she stirs and moves a leg but that's it.

"Donna." The only thing he gets in response is a muffled grunt and he gently lifts the sheets away from her face and her shoulders, revealing her freckled skin and the black straps of her top. Her eyes are still closed, her cheeks slightly flushed and he instantly worries and holds the back of his hand against her forehead to check if she has a temperature. She's warm but it could just be from the way she buried herself under the covers.

"Hey, you said you were feeling exhausted before going home earlier. You okay?"

Donna finally blinks sleepily and expels a heavy breath but the rest of her body stays as it is, unmoving.

"'m yeah. Just tired," she murmurs drowsily.

It adds to his worry. She's been so full of life lately, quite literally, having no issues with her pregnancy thus far and growing two tiny human beings inside of her like a champ. Showing no signs of fatigue or exhaustion, not even struggling with morning sickness which had been a pleasant surprise.

Tonight, curled up like this, she looks small, soft, hair damp and curling at the ends. He reaches out and smoothes his hand over her hair, lightly massaging her scalp until he sees the hint of a smile on her face.

"You want me to go and make us some dinner so you can sleep some more?"

Donna stretches, her hand sneaking out from under the bedsheets to scratch her nails over his leg, and she finally looks at him with sleepy eyes. "No, come join us. They were kicking like crazy earlier before I fell asleep."

He doesn't need to be told twice and quickly changes into a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt before joining her in bed. Donna moved in the meantime, the bedsheets now only covering the lower half of her body. Harvey kisses her temple and draws her closer until she leans on his shoulder. Placing his hand on her belly, he asks, "are they awake?"

"Yeah, one of the babies is kicking my bladder again," she smiles and guides his hand to where she can feel the kicks. "Today was just a lot," she admits. "With all the new associates having their first day and me in the middle of it. It was good but I guess coordinating everything took it out of me more than I thought it would." She pouts.

"Well, that's what we've been trying to tell you but you wouldn't listen, remember?" he teases.

"I feel like a house," she huffs, "and it's only going to get worse." Her hand joins his on her protruding belly and, in contrast to what she just said, gives it a fond caress. He knows she loves being pregnant and growing their family even when she complains.

"It is," he agrees. "We have a whole trimester to go."

"We?" she raises an eyebrow.

"Who's been catering to your needs lately?" he quips back and they both bite back a smirk thinking about her cravings and the daily foot massages.

"I know and I love you for it." Donna gives him a kiss and he leans into it to deepen it.

Drawing back, she says regretfully, "I guess being pregnant with twins is catching up to me and my superpowers after all, maybe I do need to take things more slowly at work."

Scaling back on hours at work has been something they discussed briefly but Donna had been less pregnant then and she'd told him that Zane Ross would fall without its COO and that she'd let him know if anything changed.

"Good, then we'll talk to Mike and arrange something. These two miracles have to come first," his voice grows softer then. Even months after finding out about Donna carrying twins, it's something that he has a hard time wrapping his head around; how lucky they are in every way.

They share a look and even after 13 years of being with her and after three years of being married to her, it makes him grin like he's the luckiest guy in the world, which admittedly, he is. Donna is not only his wife but the mother of their unborn daughters now and damn if it isn't the most exhilarating thing he's ever felt. Getting to come home to her, to them. Catching Donna stroking her ever-growing bump and talking to the babies. Finding her asleep in their bedroom after a long day at the office. It's nothing like he ever imagined his life to be and yet it is everything he ever wanted and longed for. The simplicity of a family, of having a home and place to be himself. To be understood. To be loved. And Donna has truly given him everything.

He drops a lingering kiss on the top of her head and that's when he feels it. A kick. One of their baby girls is pushing a hand or maybe a foot against the spot where his hand is resting on his wife's belly. His eyes snap down to where he feels the fluttery movement and Donna chuckles. "That's definitely baby B, baby A is busy jumping on my bladder like it's a trampoline."

He rubs his thumb in circles over it, trying to coax another movement out of either of the babies and Donna lifts the hem of her top so they can see the way her skin bents. Sure enough, there is another kick only moments later, one of the babies cheekily poking her father's hand.

It still feels surreal, that Donna is pregnant, that they are going to be the parents of two little girls soon, but in moments like this, when they get to feel the way these two monkeys make themselves known, it feels like it's always been this way. Like this is what was always meant to happen, and all the confusion and the heartache, the fighting and the longing was only leading up to this.

Donna joins their hands on her belly, sliding her fingers in between his, giving him a squeeze and he doesn't know what he did to deserve this. "I can't wait to meet them."

"Me neither. It'll be a rollercoaster."

"If they're anything like you…"

If they have Donna's wit and charm. Her integrity and her heart. Her red hair and her freckles. If they're smart and selfless. If they're cheeky and clever.

"Or you…"

If they have Harvey's smile and eyes as warm as melted chocolate. His stubbornness and his protectiveness. If they are determined and loyal. If they are generous and fair.

Their eyes meet and they smile at each other like they have done a million times before and like they will a million times in the future.

"We're in for a treat that's for sure and there's no one I'd rather do this with," Harvey whispers and Donna nods in silent understanding.

It's them. It's what they've always wanted, even if they couldn't access it. It's a bit of "I'll follow you to the ends of the earth," and "I can't be me without you." It's the pull they feel when they're with each other, gravitating to each other like magnets.

The only thing they want is to take every adventure together, and this is going to be the greatest one of their lives.
