Chapter 1

'Reach. Our largest loss … but that which lead the way to victory. The pillar of Autumn was only able to escape thanks to the actions of two Spartan teams … NOBLE and BEACON. Our largest remaining fleet, Remnant, along with the Spartans, engaged the Covenant invaders and fought to the bitter end, buying us the time needed to escape.

This is the story of the sacrifices of Remnant fleet and Beacon Team.'

Captain's Quarters, UNSC Vytal Flag

Captain Ozpin was sat behind his desk, completing his long overdue reports for the first time in weeks as no new Covenant ships had arrived in the system. Despite the war that was going on, Ozpin was happy that they had a bit of respite from the relentlessness of the Covenant – for both himself and the men on his ship. His intercom buzzed and he pressed the button. "Yes?"

Commander Glynda Goodwitchs voice rang out from the device. "Sir – Rear Admiral Ironwood is here to speak with you."

Ozpin sighed – that his Second in Command was the one telling him this wasn't a good thing. She only told him when a superior officer, or god forbid an ONI spook, was on board and wasn't there for a social visit. He pressed the button. "Thank you, Commander."

He locked down and encrypted the documents he was working on, closing the computer as someone knocked on the door. "Come in" he said as he stood up. The door opened and Rear Admiral James Ironwood walked in.

"Captain Ozpin – it's good to see you" James said, looking more tired than Ozpin had ever seen him. Ironwood was an imposing soldier – standing at 6 foot 8, he was often confused by those in the Corps who had never seen him as an out of armour SPARTAN. Those who were part of the Remnant fleet knew better, however. He had become the Commanding Officer of the fleet due to his unique strategies and boldness in his attacks.

"Likewise, James. I take it that you're not here for a social visit though?" Ozpin said. It was surprising to see James off the UNSC Atlas, the flagship of the Remnant fleet.

"Sadly, no. I've just received orders from HIGHCOM, apparently coming from the CNO himself. Remnant fleet is being withdrawn back to Reach."

Ozpin leaned back in his chair. "Sorry, HIGHCOM wants us to abandon this system? Why? Reach has more than adequate defences, and a fleet to protect it. Besides, the Covenant doesn't know where Reach is."

"I know Oz, but apparently ONI is spooked about whatever they have retrieved from the Covenant. And whatever it is that has them spooked is related to Reach. They feel that our fleet will be better suited to stopping any Covenant fleet that might arrive." James said.

Ozpin could see the logic behind that. Their fleet was full of heavy hitters – beyond the UNSC Atlas, an Epoch-Class heavy carrier, they had the UNSC Vytal Flag, a Marathon-class heavy cruiser, the UNSC Vacuo, another Marathon-Class heavy cruiser, the UNSC Haven, a Halcyon-class light cruiser, the UNSC Menagerie, a Diligence-Class Destroyer that had been recommissioned, and the UNSC Vale, a UNSC Heavy destroyer. Beyond that, they also had various Frigates and Prowlers. Remnant fleet was one of the largest in the UNSC at this point of the war, with about 40 ships in total.

Ozpin shook his head. "Is anyone coming to replace us here in this system?"

James shook his head. "Apparently, yes, but I wasn't told who. They feel that these colonies aren't important enough to warrant Remnant fleet staying here. And before you say it, these orders have been signed and counter-signed by the CNO, one of the ONI directors, and The President. We don't have a choice, old friend."

Ozpin groaned, his head dropping into his hands. James sighed. "I know. I don't want to leave all these people to die either, but the Brass are worried because ONI is worried. You know as well as I do that ONI rarely get worried about anything. I'm sorry Oz, but we are leaving. The fleet is leaving at 0600 tomorrow."

He walked James to his pelican, waiting until it had cleared the hanger before turning and walking towards the bridge. He didn't slow down as Glynda moved up next to him. "What's happening Captain? Rear Admiral Ironwood seemed … worried."

"Orders from CNO - We're leaving the system tomorrow. We've been redeployed to Reach. Is the ship ready to move? Any assets off ship?"

If Glynda was shocked, she didn't show it. She pulled out her datapad. "The ship wasn't too damaged – repairs should hold for the jump. Other than a few Marines and pelicans patrolling, it's just Beacon Team left on the surface. They're still on their mission, sir. Should we pull them?"

Oz nodded. "I'll contact Beacon Team – get all our other assets on board." They remained in silence until they arrived at the bridge. Upon entering the bridge, all the crew jumped up and saluted, one yelling "Captain on Deck!"

"At Ease." He walked over to Lieutenant Oobleck at the Comms station. "Get me Beacon Team, Lieutenant. Lieutenant Port, keep an eye on the radar – while there might not be any Covenant ships in range, I don't want to be surprised or have them follow us."

0250 - Beacon Team

The Unggoy sighed as it patrolled the perimeter around the ruins. He had been patrolling for hours, and nothing had moved out in the forest. As such, he didn't notice the flash from in the trees. He did, for less than half a second, notice the bullet that went through his head, before his body dropped.

The Spartan lowered her custom SRS99 sniper rifle slightly, using it to monitor the rest of the ruins for any reaction to the shot. When none came, she activated her internal comm system to her team. "Patrol down. B, Y, you have five minutes before the next guard comes along." Two clicks sounded in her ear as the two Spartans acknowledged her message. A slight rustle next to her told her that her last Spartan on her team had taken up a spot next to her, her own M392 DMR scanning the ruins. "Keep an eye open W."

"Copy R" W said, not taking her eyes away from the scope. R brought her rifle up. She had been perched in the tree for two days, observing the movements of all the Covenant species as they made a small camp in the ruins. Their mission had been to eliminate any Covenant squads and camps that they came across. While most of the Covenant had not deployed from their ships, as most had been dealt with by Remnant fleet, a few dropships had made it to surface, and Remnant Command hadn't wanted to leave any Covenant alive that could contact their Command. They were taking the camps stealthily, as most of the camps had been near each other, and they didn't want to alert all the Covenant forces that they were there.

"Beacon Team, this is Vytal Actual." Captain Ozpins voice rang in her ear. She clicked the comm to tell him that she had received. "Orders from Rear Admiral – wrap up your mission, fleet is leaving in the morning at 0600. We'll have a pelican at the rendezvous at 0430. Acknowledge."

R clicked her radio again. "Copy Beacon Team. Vytal Actual out." She pinged the team's internal comms. "Ok team – you heard the boss. Go loud." She shifted her aim and fired, detonating one of the power cells that was set up. The explosion set off a chain reaction, plunging the camp into darkness and confusing the Covenant forces. Gunfire erupted from the camp as Y and B had moved in. R turned to W. "Come on – can't let them have all the fun." W snorted, holstered her sniper and dropped to the ground, the ground beneath her crumbling when she landed. R landed next to her, and together the two ran off towards the camp.

They made it in short time. R and W split, Ruby running up the stairs and vaulting the wall, landing in a group of confused Unggoy. One noticed her and screamed, the rest turning and lifting their weapons. She grabbed her M6 Magnum and unloaded on three who were in front of her. She then grabbed her knife, moving faster than thought possible and stabbing through the mask of another. She then flung the knife into the head of another, grabbing his plasma pistol and blasting one of the last Unggoy in the face.

She looked around, rolling when she felt a bolt hit her in the shoulder. Though her shields held, they had been reduced significantly. Ducking behind cover, she grabbed her sniper rifle and aimed in the direction of the shot. She noticed a very slight movement behind one of the trunks and aimed at it. She was so focused that she didn't notice the Sangheili sneaking up on her, though before he could do anything a shot went through his head. The Spartan didn't react though, waiting for the sniper to lean out before firing. Her shot went through the scope of the Kig-Yar and straight through his head, his body dropping from the tree.

W, meanwhile, had stayed low, firing on some of the Unggoy before running into a group of three Sangheili. Spotting her, they ran forward, firing their plasma rifles. W pushed forward, using her DMR to break the first Shangheili's shield before ducking under his swing, activating one of his plasma grenades before kicking him towards his friends. They quickly pushed him away, though the explosion tore through their shields. W raised her DMR and fired two quick shots, dropping the remaining Sangheili. She turned to see one sneaking up on R, lifting the DMR and put a shot between his eyes.

W smirked before turning at the sound of a roar, seeing a Zealot charging at her. She jumped and activated her Jetpack, boosting her out of his swing range. She hit the wall and pushed off, landing behind him. She fired some shots into him as he turned, ducking beneath his swing and continuing to fire. Eventually his shield broke, and she fired at his hand. The Zealot roared, dropping the sword before a shot through his knee dropped him. As W went to shoot him in the head, she saw that he had an armed plasma grenade. She quickly dropped a bubble shield as the grenade went off, keeping her safe from the blast.

On the other side, B was engaged with four Kig-Yar with energy shields. Thankfully, while the shields mostly protected them, these ones weren't skilled enough, only holding plasma pistols. She rolled behind a pillar, waiting until they were closer before using the hologram to send a clone of her moving. As the Kig-Yar turned to follow the hologram, she activated her armours cloaking, moving towards them. When two lined up, she fired using her M7 SMG. The Kig-Yar jumped as two of their own were suddenly killed from behind. They turned and B ran forward, jumping and landing on one of the shields. She dropped her cloaking and kicked off, kicking the Kig-Yar across the yard while flipping through the air, landing on her feet. The last Kig-Yar turned to her, and she sent another hologram forward, her running perpendicular to it.

The hesitation from the Kig-Yar allowed her to lift the M7 and fire, knocking it down. She jumped over it, shooting it in the head as she went over, landing in a roll and running towards the last one. It shook its head, before remembering what it was fighting, turning to see the Spartan right in front of it. It lifted its shield, but the Spartan just vaulted over it, landing on the other side and slicing its throat with a knife.

Y had done like W; in that she had gone in a different direction to B. She came face to face with three Jiralhlanae and a Mgalekgolo pair. They all turned to her and she ran forward, pulling her M45E tactical shotgun out. She sprinted forward, rolling and coming face to face to a Jiralhlanae. She jammed the shotgun beneath its jaw and fired, dodging to the side as a Type-25 grenade launcher slammed into the ground where she stood. She punched the Jiralhlanae in the face before slamming the butt of her shotgun in it's face. She spun the shotgun, firing before turning to the third, who dropped his weapons and charged. Y holstered her shotgun, grappling with the Jiralhlanae. Even though he had charged at her, he only pushed her back one step. She smirked before slamming her helmet into his, stunning him enough to allow her to grab her knife and stab it into his jaw.

Y turned away from the Jiralhlanae to see one of the Mgalekgolo primed to fire. As it fired, she crossed her arms, activating her armour lock. The plasma exploded on contact, but Y didn't feel anything. She dropped the armour lock and sprinted forward. The Mgalekgolo moved, lifting its shield to slam down. Y dropped into a crouch, sliding and activating her armour lock again. The shield bounced off and the Mgalekgolo stumbled. Y dropped the lock and pulled her shotgun out, ramming it into the flesh between the armour and fired. The explosive force blew through, and the Mgalekgolo dropped.

Y turned to find the other one right behind her, its shield already swinging. She braced as the shield slammed into her side, throwing her into the wall. Groaning, she looked up to see the Mgalekgolo about to fire. She threw herself to the side, grabbing the Type-25 and fired at the Mgalekgolo. She kept firing as she moved forward, before spinning the Type-25 and slicing up, slamming the blade into its head. The Mgalekgolo slumped, dropping to the ground when she pulled the blade out.

….

The trek back to the rendezvous was short but uneventful. R had called ahead to alert Vytal that they were on the way and needed to be extracted earlier.

"So, any idea why we suddenly got called back?" Y said, her shotgun resting on her shoulder.

"No – something important though, since we're leaving the system pretty fast." R said, not looking back at the team.

"Where could they be sending us though? This area has seen the most action recently" W said, and Y nodded. "Exactly – so why pull us?"

"Maybe they believe that there's going to be a bigger engagement elsewhere?" B said.

"It doesn't matter – they'll tell us if we need to know." R replied.

With that, the Team continued to walk in silence, arriving in the clearing five minutes before the Pelican arrived. The team, having checked to make sure that they wouldn't get ambushed before it arrived got onto the Pelican.

A/N: Hello! So I'm a big fan of Halo and RWBY, and decided to try a story that was in a new world that wasn't Harry Potter. I'm not sure how long the story will end up being, but I already know how it's going to end.
