Astro B.O.Y.D. is my second favorite episode in the series and incredibly important. Everyone should watch it a thousand times. I've only seen it once so far. Everything is Spoilers, a little bit, including the rest of the author's note.
One thing that I loved from the episode was Dadro (Dad Gyro) and so I had to write some fanfics about it.
But I had to write this one first because Boyd already has a family, so before I write all the fun Gyro learning to parent stories, I needed to address the Drakes.
"We need to talk about our son." Gyro Gearloose stood at the door of a massive treehouse, crossing his arms and looking very serious.
"Excuse me, our son? I'm afraid I don't understand…" The man dressed in a Butler's outfit said, wringing his hands. Discomfort was his default.
"Boyd Drake. Technically Boyd Gearloose but I'm willing to compromise with Boyd Drake-Gearloose. I'm Boyd's creator, and I want him to be a part of my life more. But he's your son too. I know that you've offered him unconditional love and so I don't want to just take him away by force, even though I could." Lil Bulb sat on his shoulder and turned red for a moment, "So we need to talk about our son."
"Please, come in, we'll get you a coffee." Mrs. Drake said, dressed as a maid and nervously running a hand through her brown hair. Gyro followed behind them. The little creep he'd only seen in Boyd's memory recordings was nowhere to be found, probably torturing some unsuspecting rodent.
"What exactly are you suggesting, Mr. Uh… I didn't catch your name?"
"Dr. Gearloose."
"Dr. Gearloose, how exactly would you solve this problem?"
"The way any co-parents would. Creating a visitation schedule. It only makes sense, that way we'd both get time with him and we wouldn't have to have any problems. Boyd is not a problem."
"Of course not, Boyd is the light of our lives!" Mrs. Drake insisted.
"I understand." Gyro cupped Lil Bulb's face in his hand, the other light of his own life, "Boyd is truly something special." He thought about hugging the boy close after admitting to both of them that Boyd was a real boy. He'd been terrible to the kid leading up to that point, but Boyd had seemingly forgiven him for all of it. He loved that kid.
"How about Boyd spends the weekend with you? And some holidays?" Mr. Drake suggested.
"No. Every other week."
"But… But… That's a lot of time."
"Mrs. Drake, I understand your concerns, that's how I feel too. That you get a lot of time with my son. But I can't think like that. Because he's our son. Collectively. Which is why I think that we split time with him 50/50."
The Drakes continued to seem hesitant.
"Okay, okay, I understand that this is all a lot to take in at once. I understand that you might not have any reason to listen to me. Is Boyd around?"
"He is, he's in his room, should I go get him?" Mrs. Drake offered.
"Yes, we'll ask him what he thinks about co-parenting." Gyro knew that this was the right thing to do, but it was also a risk. Boyd was his own person and could make his own decisions. Gyro was a little bit afraid that those decisions would leave him out. But if those were the decisions his boy wanted to make, he would understand. Gyro had said heartless things to Boyd and he understood if Boyd just didn't want to forgive him, didn't want to spend part of his life with him.
"So. Uh. What do you do?" Mr. Drake asked, making small talk.
"I'm the lead scientist for Scrooge McDuck."
"Oh. Cool. I work for my tyrannical oldest son as a slave."
"Oh, fun."
"Yeah…"
"Money makes people crazy sometimes," Gyro said with a shrug.
"Hi, Dr. Gearloose! Hi dad!" Boyd went over and hugged both of them. Gyro's heart soared as he hugged back.
"Hey, we need to talk to you." He didn't really know how to address this kid, this young boy who was essentially his son. Bud and buddy didn't feel earned.
"Okay!" Boyd smiled rightly, climbing up onto a kitchen chair and looking between them. His mom stood behind him with a hand on his shoulder.
"I met your parents, obviously, and they're very nice," Gyro started, taking his hat off and fiddling with it for a second out of nervousness, "and I'd never want to take you away from them. But I was thinking that maybe you could live with me as well, like, going back and forth between my place and here. You'd get to be with both of us. Does that sound good at all? It's okay if you wouldn't want to live with me." Boyd thought long and hard about it.
"I'd like to," he said brightly.
"We think that would be good for you too," Mrs. Drake said, kneeling down to his level, "but we have different ideas for how long you should be with Mr.- sorry, Dr. Gearloose and how long you should be with us. Your dad and I think it would be good if you spent the weekends with him."
"And I think that you should live with me every other week. That way we're splitting responsibility evenly. There's no wrong answer, Boyd. It's all up to you." Gyro offered the young boy a smile.
Boyd looked between them, and then he laughed, "This is fun. I don't usually get this much choice. I think that we should test both options. We can start with Dr. Gearloose's idea but if it doesn't work we can switch." Gyro smiled, it did feel like he was winning, but he was also just glad he could do something that Boyd wanted and felt comfortable with. Boyd had seen some crap. Gyro wanted to do everything he could to help his son live a normal life.
"When is this going to start?" Mr. Drake asked.
"It's Monday, so how about Boyd stays here for the rest of the week and then on Sunday I'll come to get him, and then the next Sunday we'll trade-off. I imagine we'll know after a while whether or not it's working for Boyd. Does that sound good for everyone?" Gyro looked around. He liked these people, they cared about his son, their son, and he could imagine working very closely with them moving forward.
"Yes, sounds good." Gyro kneeled down and gave Boyd a big hug.
"I'll get your room ready and see you on Sunday, Boyd. I can't wait." Boyd hugged back just as strong.
"Thank you, Dr. Gearloose!" They'd talk later about what Boyd wanted to call him. Boyd already had someone fit into the dad slot. Maybe papa. Was that weird? Gyro didn't know. He looked forward to finding out where he fit in Boyd's life and where Boyd fit into his.
"It was nice meeting both of you," he nodded to the Drakes, "I'm sure we'll talk a lot more moving forward." He looked back at Boyd one last time before he left. Both of their lives were about to change forever.
