The first thing he could feel was the rain. Slow, cold, but soothing to his aching body. Kai did not want to open his eyes, in fear of the pain getting the better of him, making him black out. But eventually he did, first seeing a grey sky, then the walls of the Monastery around them. He sat up, and looked around, and noticed his sister, Nya, slowly getting up. She also looked around, caught Kai's eyes, and smiled. He smiled back.
"Are you alright, Kai?" She asked, walking towards him and helping him up.
"Yea, I think so. What happened?" He asked, but then remembered it all. "Nya, the time mech, Sensei Wu, the Time Twins! Remember we fell while they were traveling to the future? Do you think the portal spat us out in a different time?"
"I have no clue, but at least we know this place," she responded, gesturing to the building around them. "This is where we were trained, lived, and where we fought the Time Twins in the past with the Elemental Alliance. And know that we know where we are…"
"We know where we can get help!" Kai exclaimed! "But, let's look around the Monastery first, to try to get an idea where in time we are." After Nya agreed, the two siblings started to look around, trying to find clues as to how far into the past, or future, they were.
They split up, Nya searching the left side, where Jay, Cole, and Lloyd had their bedrooms, while Kai searched the right, where he, Nya, and Zane had their bedrooms, along with Sensei Wu. Each room looked exactly as before, with beds covered in bedsheets of the ninja's colour, but was covered in dust, dirt, and lacked any personal belongings. Kai was looking through Zane's room, thinking about how weird this was, when Nya walked in, sounding scared. "Kai…"
Kai looked up and saw his sister with a tearful expression, holding a picture frame.
" I found this in Jay's room. I know it does not mean anything, but I...I…" she whimpered, soon starting to cry. Kai took the picture frame, noticing that it was shattered and covered in dust. Kai cleaned it off and saw Jay, not much older than the friend he knew, wearing a fancy suit with a blue tie, smiling. Beside him there was Nya, wearing a wedding dress, also smiling at the camera. This photo, Kai concluded, was taken on their wedding day. Behind the couple, Kai saw him and the rest of his team, obviously photobombing the shot. It was such a great photo, but why was it shattered? Why was it not taken along with the rest of Jay's belongings?
He turned to Nya and gave her a hug, obviously she believed that the worst had happened to them. Kai led his sister outside, and the two sat in silence. Then Kai spoke up.
"At least we know that we are in the future, Nya, and that's something. Do you think we should go somewhere else, try to get some help? Nya?"
His sister's eyes were still brimming with tears. "Kai… I'm scared. What happens in the future? What if Jay...dies? I don't want to know what happens!" Kai rested his hands on his sister's shaking shoulders.
"Nya, that photo means nothing. Who knows, maybe they were attacked and Jay could not get the photo when they ran. We both know him. He may be annoying, and childish, but he is strong. Why lose faith in him so quickly? I say we pick ourselves up and find some help. We cannot help anyone, past, present, future, or otherwise just sitting here worrying about what may never happen."
She nodded, and they both got up, making their way to the closest village they knew. Jamonakai. When they got there, the two booked a room for the night and stayed there. They agreed that Kai would head to Ed and Edna's Junkyard in search of Jay and Nya would search Ninjago City for Dareth, all the while keeping an eye out for the rest of their team. They knew that if any places in all of Ninjago could give them answers, it would be those two.
In the morning, as they were preparing to leave, they heard voices. Young voices, filled with excitement but also seriousness. The siblings looked out their window, and saw a group of ninja. Among the group they could see the colours black, red, white, green, and brown.
" Guys, Sensei Lloyd said the serpentine were spotted here," the one in black said, looking about, "but where are they?" His voice had a strong, sure tone to it, but was also tinted with confusion. " Keith, what do you think? You always have the answers, right?", he said in a sarcastic tone.
The ninja dressed in red turned to him, made a fist, and swung at his teammate, lighting his fist on fire. Kai, seeing this unfold, was shocked. They were obviously far enough in time that Lloyd had become a Sensei, and the children of his friends, or heirs to their element, had become ninja. Kai smiled at this, realizing that the hot-tempered ninja he saw below him was likely his son. But, he never thought he would name his kid Keith. He looked at Nya, attempting to see if she had reached the same conclusion herself. She reached his eyes, and he saw she did understand, but was more terrified than before. She jerked her head, hinting that she wanted to talk out of the earshot of the future Ninja of Ninjago. They walked away from the window and into the rented house.
"They can likely help us, Nya, all we have to do is go and talk to them."
"That's not it, Kai" she said in a worried voice. "Where is the blue ninja in that group? Or the grey ninja? The ninja team down there lacks the lightning and water elements. Does that mean…" Kai knew his sister did not have to say it for him to understand. Something happens to Jay and Nya in the future, something that leads to no Lightning or Water ninja on the team. As much as Kai wanted to find out the truth, his thoughts were interrupted by a familiar voice. Too familiar. One he heard even when he was all alone.
He rushed to the window, looked down on the group, and noticed a new figure had joined them. Nya ran to Kai's side and looked down, too. The figure was wearing normal villager clothes, tinted red, and had the Fire Ninja's logo on the shoulder. His brown hair was naturally sticking up in the oddest of places. The red ninja ran over to this newcomer, shouting "Dad!" The two siblings watching from above smiled.
"Well, Kai, at least we know you still exist in the future." Nya said, watching the father-son interaction down below. Kai let out a gasp, and bolted out of the room. Nya, awfully confused, bolted after him. Kai continued to run out of the building and ran right for the future version of Kai, wrestling him onto the ground. Nya had enough sense to put her mask up before coming into the eyesight of the group, the future ninja. Everything seemed to freeze, as the ninja stood shocked while Kai and Future Kai wrestled on the ground.
"Stop fighting me!" Kai yelled, " I only want your help!" He was about to say more when his feet suddenly were covered in ice and frozen to the ground. He looked up to see the white ninja beside him, obviously smiling under the mask. He soon went over to the other Kai and helped him up.
"Are you alright, Master Kai?" He asked, in a tone much like Zane's. Master Kai nodded, and went over to Frozen Kai, and went for the hit.
"Wait! We do not mean any harm!" Nya shouted, drawing all eyes to her. She could feel the confusion in the air as she continued. "We are from the past, Acronix and Krux, to be exact. We went with them into a time portal and it must have dropped in the future. All we want is your help…" she finished, soon realizing she was rambling like her other half, Jay. Emotions welled up inside her, fear of his, no, their future. But she contained it, as Master Kai approached her.
"Nya..?" She took off her mask, and accepted the hug he gave her. She could tell her brother was a lot older, not physically, but mentally. He seemed wiser, calmer, more disciplined. He broke the hug, and smiled at her.
"Of course we will help, no matter what kind of start we got," he said, smiling at Kai, whose frozen feet were being thawed by Keith. When he was finally free, he grunted and joined Nya. The future ninja had not changed their position, as if they were frozen in shock of what was occurring in front of them. Soon, the green ninja broke the silence.
"Umm...why don't we head back to the bounty? I feel exposed here. Also, Sensei Llyod said to hurry back ASAP."
"Then let's go then," Master Kai said with a smile, and led the group through the town. Nya smiled when she saw that most of the ninja ran ahead, but Keith and the white ninja hung back with the adults, talking quietly to each other.
"Are you allowed to talk to us about the future?, " Kai asked, " I know we could wreck the timeline, but I am so confused right now." Nya nodded in agreement.
"Well, I think it should be ok as long as you keep the future between you too, when you eventually get home" Master Kai responded. "Of course, I think it will not be too hard. He added, looking at Nya. She felt her face get hot, thinking about the secret that her and Jay have been keeping for about 6 months now. The evil Djinn, the sky pirates, her death. Then, suddenly, she realized they must have told them eventually, and smiled at Master Kai. Kai, through all of this, got awfully confused, and broke the silence.
"So, Keith is my...your son?" Master Kai nodded. "Then are the white, black, and green ninja Coles, Zane's, and Lloyd's kids? Who in the world is the brown ninja? Dareth's kid?"
Master Kai laughed.
"You are correct. The white ninja is Andy, a creation Cyrus Borg made with Zane's life source, sort of like Zane's son once he gave up being a ninja. The black ninjas name is- "
"Wait! Why would Zane give up being a ninja?" Nya burst out.
Master Kai took a deep breath. " After everyone got to their own lives, each of us gave up being a ninja one by one. For most of us, it was because we had heirs to our element", with that he gestured to the red ninja behind him " but for Zane, he got lonely without us around, so Andy was created to replace him on the team and to give him some company.
" Although, it was not very long before the next ninja team was created, leaving only a five years gap between the old and the new. And, I am not saying that there were no protectors, just no team."
Kai opened his mouth to say more, but was interrupted by the brown ninja running back to them.
"Master Kai! The Bounty is on fire!" She exclaimed.
To be continued...
