Prologue

"If you don't hear from mebe ready to come to look for mecome prepared. Know what to expect. Be wary of others, little bird. Don't let them fool you. Be on guard." There was a click at the end of the line as the voicemail ended. It was the last time she had heard from him, it's been a few days since the voicemail was placed in her inbox. He had told her that he wanted to return to his hometown to take care of things, to finish what was started by the founding families for many generations. To put an end to the infestations of unwanted lurkers of the night and other mythical creatures that may be out there, possibilities are endless. One of those things he wanted to take care of was—he wanted to right what he had wronged in the past. Even with good intentions, he was foolish enough to go on his own without her. Without her help for that matter.

His lack of communications for the past couple of weeks had driven her mad with worry, but she didn't take action then. Not until he gave her a heads up. She was thorough with her orders that were set by him, long before he entered that godforsaken town. She was not the type to make any rash decisions just because something seems out of the ordinary than usual. His voicemail had set everything that was planned in motion, this was only the beginning even if it was his ending and marks her beginnings.

She stood at a safe distance as she was hidden behind the trees, she watches the teary brunette with red roses in her hands as she bends down and places one on a fresh grave before setting the other rose at another next to it—where Jenna Sommers' grave lie. The brunette then put the rest of the roses from her hands onto older graves before rejoining her who you'd assume her lover. The others followed suit after the girl did. The mysterious woman was mourning from the distance for the loss of a man, that taught the little bird what it was like to soar through the skies as she spread out her wings to fly.

Even if he's no longer around she will make sure she will carry out his orders and nothing will get in her way. She'll make sure of that, even if that is the last thing she would ever do and submit to the same fate as his.

When the others were gone, she appeared in front of the grave—placing vervain flowers onto the freshly patched dirt where the roses lay. Crouching down to trace the engraved tombstone. 'In loving memory of—Johnathan "John" Gilbert'. A tear slips down her cheek as she silently mourns for the man who taught her everything she needed to know to survive in the supernatural world. She slowly stands up from her crouching position as her eyes remain on the grave. Shaking her head relieving herself from her grieving state as the emotionless mask cascades her beautiful face. She walks away from the gravesite with fuel to avenge his death.

'I'll make them all pay.'

Denver, ColoradoDenver East High School

Jeremy finds himself alone at the school's patio sitting down at one of the picnic tables right across from the cafeteria with his music turned up so high, ignoring stares he's been receiving since the first day he had transferred to Denver East High. It's only been a week and he's already dreading the transfer to a new school for his junior year. He was sent off to come live with friends of the family as a way to get his 'act together' so to speak. Pulling out his sketchbook, he lets his pencil guide his ideas from his mind and spilling it onto the page.

"Whatcha' drawing?" a voice asked as he felt the table move as someone decided to sit across from him, his gaze looked up from his sketchbook and onto curious brown orbs, that reminded him of hot gooey brownies just out of the oven. He turned down his music and took one of his earphones out of his ear so he can hear the pretty brunette right in front of him.

"Excuse me?" He shyly smiles at her and she repeats herself.

"Whatcha' drawing?—I'm sorry I didn't mean to intrude. I saw you were drawing and decided to check out what you were up to. Oh…How rude of me!" She scratched the back of her head giving him an embarrassed smile. "I'm Odette, a member of the welcome committee and the student council." Her smiles widen as he stares at her amusingly.

"Isn't it too late for that? I've been in school for a week now." He let out a chuckle, shaking his head as he placed his pencil down beside his sketchbook.

"My apologies, my fellow student council members decided it was more important to run the student council elections and future plannings, pushing back the welcome committee's orientation for new students." She explained, while she absentmindedly twirling a strand of her hair and fidgetting slightly from his stare.

"Ah, It's alright. It's no big deal. I managed to get around the school on my own—just fine." He looks over at the brunette in front of him; heart-shaped face, long wavy chocolate brown hair with pale porcelain skin with a hint of rosy tint on her cheeks and curves in all the right places in which her dark blouse hugs her upper body perfectly and her skinny jeans fitting like it's her second skin—accompanied by her dark-colored converse shoes. "The name's Jeremy, Jeremy Gilbert." He extended his hand toward her and she placed hers in his, shaking it firmly. 'Hmm, a firm handshake is always a good first impression for both parties.' Jeremy thought to himself.

"Nice to meet you." She grins at him before asking. "I hope your first week of school has been great so far—if someone tries to mess with you let me know and the disciplinary committee will take care of it. This school has zero-tolerance for bullying and any misconduct. And don't be shy to ask me or anyone on the student council any questions, if you do have questions."

"Well, the only thing they've done so far is staring at me like I'm a prize from a crawling machine." He grins back at her with teasing tone in his voice. "But I've hadn't run into any trouble...yet."

"It'll die down eventually. You're East High's shiny new toy—well besides the other person I have to find and greet as well. I believe he came the same week as you did, the same grade as well—Have you seen him by any chance?" Jeremy tilted his head to the side as her question sank into his mind. The only person he recalled transferring the same week as him—was his now good friend, Kol.

"Oh—you mean Kol?" Jeremy asked in return. "Yeah, he actually went to the cafeteria to get his lunch. I'm sure he'll be back in a few—Speaking of the devil there he is." Jeremy pointed at the direction behind Odette as Kol made his way to the picnic table, placing his lunch tray onto the table and flopping down next to her with a slight brush of his arm against hers sends a tiny static shock through her body before it died down quickly. 'What the hell was that?' She slightly rubbed her arms as though to calm the sensation down.

"This mush isn't quite my standards but it will do for now." Kol grabbed his spork, stabbing the mac 'n cheese with it while sending a smirk towards Jeremy's way before turning to face the pretty brunette next to him. He was not aware of the tiny static that he had erupted through the tiny brunette beside him.

"Hello, I'm Odette." She extended her hand towards Kol, he turned his head and examined the pretty brunette next to him. He lets his eyes wander over her, taking in her beauty, rose-tinted cheeks brighten as she feels his wandering eyes over her. "Odette—Like Swan Lake?" Kol said amused. "Kol Mikaelson, It's a pleasure to meet you." He said as he kissed the back of her hand, like a gentleman that he was raised to be.

"Yes, like Swan Lake— Do you like ballet?" She asked as she slips her hand out of his grasp and decided to ask him how his first week was just like she did to Jeremy. "I don't particularly care for the arts as my siblings do. As for my first week of the godforsaken place called high school, everyone has been very welcoming darling—a little too welcoming. I haven't experienced anything like it."

"At least one of us finds the attention pleasant." Jeremy teased as he saw Kol's distaste expression on his face—it was as if he had eaten something so foul and couldn't get the taste off his tongue. He had known Kol for just a couple of days but they've seemed to hit it off from the start like they've known each other for years. It was quite refreshing for both of them.

"Of course, I don't mind the attention." He scoffed with sarcasm dripping from his tone at Jeremy before turning his attention back at the brunette beside him. "How about you Ms—" He trails off as though he didn't quite catch her surname, well she hadn't introduced herself fully to him.

"It's Lache—Odette Lache." She smiles sweetly at him causing his dead heart to skip a beat with his breath caught at his throat before composing himself.

"Hmm, Odette Lache. Has a nice ring to it." He finds himself eying her once more, her features seem familiar to him but couldn't put his mind to it. Long wavy brown hair, creamy white skin, curves to die for and beautifully sculpted heart-shaped face. "Are you German or French?" he smiles, curious about this brunette beauty right in front of him.

Before Odette could respond to Kol, there was a buzzing sound coming from the pocket of her jeans and she looked down on her phone, quickly shooting out a reply text. She meets Kol's curious eyes as she smiles back at him and puts her phone back in her pocket.

"It's a mix of both—Actually, sorry to cut this short but I have to go meet back with the rest of the student council members. You know how it gets when it comes to politics, especially at school." She excused herself, leaving both boys to wonder after her retreating form as she crossed the school patio.

"She's—" Kol trials off as the sway of her hips distracts him from his line of thoughts.

"Hot?" Jeremy finished Kol's sentence with a mischievous grin on his face, he thought it was amusing to see Kol developing a little crush on the little brunette when he didn't bat an eye towards the cheerleaders and stuck-up queen bees of the school who's been trying to seduce both of them.

"I was going to say... Lovely, but Hot works too." Jeremy shakes his head as he resumes drawing into his sketchbook while Kol continues to poke at his mush of mac n' cheese. Something about the tiny brunette that intrigued him greatly and no human has ever before. Maybe her sweet aroma? Her long luscious brown hair that occasionally falls onto her doe-like eyes? She smells very delicious. Maybe he can lure her somewhere private to have a little taste. Quite a delicacy.

Kol walks alongside Jeremy as they finish school for the day passing by their fellow students through the hallways. "Any plans after school mate?" he asked Jeremy as they stopped by the lockers on their way towards the entrance of the school.

"Yeah, I was planning to go to the batting cages today to practice my swing. I want to eventually try out for the school's baseball team. I heard they're unbeatable so far and don't want to end up embarrassing them if I couldn't hit a home run." Jeremy shifts his backpack on one of his shoulders as they walk through the halls.

Kol was about to tease him on his spiked interest in baseball and batting cages but Jeremy had left him to go to Odette who's placing her school books into her locker while juggling her textbooks and hydro flask water bottle in her arms, struggling to do so.

"Hey, let me help you with that." Odette startled, turning her head to Jeremy as he took her other books out of her arms and placing it neatly into her locker with the rest of her textbooks. She lets out a sigh of relief and turns fully towards Jeremy and Kol.

"Thanks, Remy." She acknowledged his help. Grateful for it as she's been juggling them books throughout the day, her arms could use some break and so does her bookbag, she didn't want to ruin a perfectly nice bag. She gave Jeremy a questioning look as though she knew he wanted to ask her something, at least judging by his body language and the way his face looks like he's been contemplating.

"No problem, I was wondering, do you have any plans? Or are you going straight home and being the nerd that you are? If not, Kol and I are planning to hit the batting cages." Jeremy smirks at her teasingly knowing she's not the type to get offended easily. For the short amount of time knowing her, for the past few weeks, he couldn't help but feel as though he had known her forever due to how easily they just clicked and being the same age and all. Even Kol grew fond of their three musketeers as a trio as they seemed to gravitate around each other, whether during lunchtime or to hang out after school. That is if Odette doesn't have to deal with any student council meetings. She's a busy girl some of the days but still manages to find time to hang out with the guys.

"You're a jerk. You know I can't turn down the possibility of kicking your ass in the batting cages. I'd let you know I used to be on the softball team, one of their top players I might add." She folds her arms over her chest and tilts her head up as her pride shines through her face. Her long hair in a fishtail braid hovering over her right shoulder, she straightens her peach sweater just over her gray washed out skinny jeans that cover her long beautiful legs, complimenting her peach-colored converse.

"When was this? In your imaginary school world or an alternative reality? Even so, I won't back down on that challenge. Ready to get your ass kicked Lache?'' Odette stuck her tongue out at him as she closed her locker and gave a nod at Kol's direction, acknowledging his presence. She's been keeping him at an arm's length not wanting to give him the wrong idea. Yes, Kol has a dashing nice look to him, the kind where it screams 'bad boy' or 'heartbreaker' dripping from his features; deep brown eyes, brown hair that is an epiphany of 'sex hair', sharp jawline, and a devilish smirk that would make any girl weak to their knees. Kol winks at her as he catches her staring; she blushes and turns away as she and Jeremy walked away from the lockers towards the exit.

The small brunette wedged between these two tallboys as they made it through the parking lot where Kol's 1987 Black Porsche 924 is parked next to Odette's car. Jeremy got into Kol's car while Odette got into her red Mini Cooper S, she followed Kol as they made their way to the batting cage. It was a Friday evening so the batting cages weren't so preoccupied and they managed to get themselves an area near the snack bar in case they needed some refreshments.

"Ready to lose Remy?—Remember the loser buys dinner and the winner clearly will be praised for their awesome sportsmanship." Odette looks over her left shoulder as Jeremy stood a few feet behind her, the same goes for Kol but he was at the right side of her. Jeremy snorted at her taunts as he watched her get in position, aligning herself at where the pitching machine would be shooting the balls at.

"Whatever you say, Odie." Jeremy rolls his eyes at her and watches the first ball fly towards her, she swings at the ball and instantly sends it off on her first try. While the other balls follow suit—with each swing, she manages to hit each and every ball that comes her way, not missing a single one. After the timer stops, she turns around and smirks at the guys. Jeremy and Kol stare at this tiny girl with astonishment as she wasn't kidding on how good she was at batting cages.

"Better close your mouths before you catch flies into them." Her smile widened when the boys closed their gaping mouths, shaking off their amusement. She flips her fishtail braid as she walked towards them and sending a smile their way.

"That was sick! Odie, you weren't kidding. How am I going to top that?" Jeremy complained, playfully as he still looks at her in disbelief.

"Looks like you guys have to buy me dinner tonight." She winks at him, handing the metal bat to him and standing next to Kol. Which was still looking at her with amusement in his eyes.

"Not if I can top that darling. Then you'll have to take me out for dinner, of course with little Gilbert tagging along." Kol said as he shook off his shock as he gave her his best sexy grin, making her feel all warm inside. 'Damn butterflies.' She stares at him for a bit and then turns her head as she focuses her attention back to Jeremy who was positioning himself to bat.

After a while, it was Kol's turn to bat and he ended up being tied with Odette, score-wise. When they were competing Jeremy took the time to let them know he's going to use the bathroom and get them some drinks before they head out for dinner after announcing the winner.

On the way out of the bathroom, Jeremy bumps into someone. "Oh, I'm so—"

He looks up and sees his older sister Elena standing in front of him while Damon Salvatore stands behind her, cautious of their surroundings.

"Hey, Jer." Elena said with a smile and relief to finally see her little brother after being compelled and set off to Denver for his own safety, just to get him away from all the violence that's currently happening in Mystic Falls. Especially when the whole Klaus situation is still at hand, she was determined to keep her brother safe.

"Elena? What are you doing here?—What's wrong?" Jeremy looks at his sister suspiciously. Better yet, what was she doing there with Damon of all people? 'Something must have happened for them to appear out of the blue.' Jeremy thought to himself. Knowing that blue-eyed man was bad news.

"We need your help." Elena explained as Damon waved at Jeremy causing him to frown at the vampire. Jeremy makes his way toward the area where the batting cages are aligned as Damon explains his end of things to him.

"Katherine sired us, Rose sired Katherine—all we need to do is find out who sired Rose." Damon explained, with his attention solely on Jeremy.

Jeremy looks at Damon with a confused expression on his face. "So you traveled across the country to get me to talk to a dead vampire?"

"Dead vampire is redundant but yes." Damon rolls his eyes and Elena quietly listens to them with her hands inside her coat, looking around once in a while.

"Well—I can't. I can talk to Anna and Vicky cause I knew them—I've never met Rose." Jeremy explained to the vampire.

"What's good in you dying and coming back to life when you can't talk to a ghost when I needed you to?" Jeremy frowns at Damon due to his snarky attitude in regard to his 'special ability.' It wasn't as simple as how Damon puts it.

"Rose spent a long time running from Klaus as well, she and Damon are close so maybe we can use him as a connection." Elena chimed in, hoping it's one of the solutions to their many problems that had erupted since Klaus had shown up in their lives along with awakening his siblings.

"Fine, fine can we do this later my friends are waiting for me—Yes, Damon I actually have some. Call you when I'm done." Jeremy placed a kiss on his sister's cheek as he walked through, between them. He walks towards a laughing Odette and a smirking Kol. They were clearly flirting with one another.

"Hey, guys!" Jeremy smirks back at the two who's slightly teasing each other. Looks like Kol let Odette win which means Jeremy and him gotta pay for dinner. Kol spots Elena and Damon, he then decides to grab a wooden bat from the bat rack and make his way toward them. He has some unfinished business to attend for his dearest brother, Klaus. He didn't care to blow his cover because now the cat is out of the bag.

"Jer..." Elena turns around and gasps as she spots Kol making his way towards them, leaving the spot where he stood next to a pretty brunette who's next to Jeremy chatting up a storm not paying attention to what Kol was doing. Elena backs away as she alerts Damon.

"Damon, it's Kol." Damon turns around but before he can fully rotate himself, Kol swung his bat and smashed it onto Damon's head-splitting it in half and he threw the broken bat onto the floor with an evil smirk on his face, taunting the Salvatore. There's no way he's going to make them spoil his big brother's plans. If he shall use Jeremy as leverage then he shall.

"What the hell are you doing?!" Jeremy exclaimed as Odette screamed, shaking in fear due to Kol's act of violence towards another.

"Jeremy, get back he's an Original!" Elena warns her brother with fear in her eyes.

"What?" Jeremy looked at his friend in disbelief as Odette grips onto his arm for support. Kol ignores his 'friends' as he goes back to the bat rack to grab a metal bat.

"No hard feelings mate. But we're not buds—You know I'll never get used to aluminum. Hey, at least it won't break—" Before Kol could hit Damon again, he was penetrated through his stomach and into his heart with the broken piece of the wooden bat causing him to collapse into his temporary slumber. Odette lets out a shriek as she saw the wooden bat impaled through Kol's back covered in his blood.

"Jeremy...What did they do to him?" Jeremy's arms wrap around Odette's shoulders keeping her steady against his side.

"Did you kill him?" Jeremy asked as he pulled Odette closer to him as he walks towards his sister and Damon while looking at Kol's unresponsive body.

"What's going on here?" Odette spoke once more, with confusion and fear coating her tone. She stares at the strangers that seem to know of Jeremy and not favoring Kol. She doesn't blame them, he was acting like a psychotic maniac. 'But did they really have to kill him?' She looks at the brunette with long straight hair with brown eyes, seeing the resemblance to Jeremy and the dark-haired blue-eyed man next to the girl.

"This will give us a head start." Damon brushes his hands over Elena's arms to soothe her.

"Damon—She saw you taking out Kol." Elena addresses Jeremy's friend and Damon finally turns his attention to the small brunette who's looking at him with fear in her eyes. As he left Elena's side he walked up to her and grabbed both sides of her face to have her look at him in the eyes. His piercing blue eyes.

"Damon, what are you doing? Don't hurt her." Jeremy tries to move Odette out of Damon's grasps but Elena pulls him towards her. He glared at his sister for stopping him from interfering with Damon.

"He's going to make her forget. We can't have any loose ends here Jer." She looks at her brother with sympathy written on her face. Knowing that they're going to take away Jeremy's one friend that he actually made in a very long time since the mess of things in Mystic Falls.

"No—you can't do that! Please!—Don't Damon!" Jeremy begged. He didn't want Odette out of his life. While staying in Denver he had grown fond of their growing friendship and she was easy to talk to.

"You will forget what you saw here. It never happened. You never went to the batting cages. You will forget about ever seeing us here. You're going to forget what I did to Kol. You never met Jeremy. Now get in your car and go home. Do you understand?" Damon asked as he compels the pretty brunette in front of him.

"I understand." The brunette's pupils dilated as it responded to the compulsion. Damon let go of her face and she turned away from them and walked off into the parking lot, getting into her mini cooper and drove off.

"Why does it have to be like this?" Jeremy snapped and walked towards the parking lot with Elena tailing behind him.

After gathering Jeremy's stuff from where he was staying they've left and headed out of Denver to their first pit stop for the night. A hotel somewhere—where Kol can't find them.

Jeremy looks down at his sketchbook, where a drawing of Odette appears remembering as he had drawn her during one of the days they were hanging out at the school's yard waiting for Kol to get out of his class. Odette was smiling reading a book in her lap while she talks about the main character of her book and how silly of them for being so naive about everything they do and falling for a bad guy, knowing they weren't good for them. One of the memories he will surely treasure.

'I won't forget you, Odette.' He thought to himself as tears fell from his face. Elena glanced at the rearview mirror watching her brother mourn for the loss of his friend. She looks at Damon as he has done the same, watching Jeremy. Little Gilbert mourning. They had more important things to attend and losing his friend was just a little pinch of salt in an open wound. Elena sighs and closes her eyes, she didn't like hurting her brother but she's only looking out for him. 'Was she doing the right thing? Or was it selfish of her?'
