Little Midoriya Izuku was born into this world with six tiny little white wing stubs on his back.
In place of his ears were feathers tinted green. His white and green hair was feather soft, and his green and red eyes were full of stars and wonder as he looked up at his mother for the first time.
Inko thought he was absolutely angelic.
In that hospital room that was empty save for her and her wonderful child, she sang.
Soft words filled the room as she cradled the bundle of life closer to herself, foreheads touching.
"You are my child of shooting stars
You are my wish come true
My heart had never held such love
Until my arms held you"
Today Izuku is four years old.
Normally when a child hits four they wonder what their quirk will be as they wait with bated breath for it to manifest.
Izuku however, was one who was already born with their quirk- a mutation type!
He had six wings he was very proud of!
They were well groomed, sleek, beautiful, and oh-so very white.
The two wings in the middle were the largest of the six. If he spread them out each wing was nearly as big as his little four year old body.
The other four wings were smaller in size. The top two were actually just as long as the bigger wings, stopping short of a few inches. But they were that. Just long. The feathers themselves were rather stubby.
The bottom set of wings were the same, but only reaching to half the middle's length.
If Izuku gathered all six wings on top of each other, they all looked like a single, huge set of bulky wings and a mess of feathers.
Despite them being big, and having six of them, he still cannot fly!
Oh, he tries. He tries and tries every day, flapping and straining himself to fly off the ground just a little bit he begs. But his feet never leave the ground as he pouts at the fact.
But they're growing everyday! Surely, he should be able to fly sometime soon! He longs for when that will happen.
For Izuku's birthday, him and Inko spend it together. Just the two of them as she showers her angelic little baby with love.
That night they have katsudon.
Izuku is happy.
Sparks dance from his best friend's palms. The lights they produce shine in Izuku's green and red eyes as he watches them crackle and pop with excitement.
"Kacchan, you got your quirk!" Izuku marvels. "It's so cool…" His mismatched eyes now focused on his friend. "That's a perfect quirk for a hero!"
Katsuki preens at the praise. "Of course it is, Deku! My quirk is a lot better than having dumb wings."
Izuku puffs out his cheeks at his friends rebuttal. "Flying is cool, too!"
"You can't even fly!"
"Not yet! But I will!" Giving his wings a little flutter, he adds, "They're getting bigger and bigger! I bet I could fly today if I wanted to!"
Katsuki smirks at Izuku. "Oh yeah? Then prove it!"
The preschool teacher, sensing trouble, swoops in. "Now, now. Izuku you know the rules, no flying attempts until recess, ok? We don't want anyone to get smacked with a stray wing now, do we?"
The two boys deflate, giving small nods. As the teacher turns away, they exchange excited looks.
They don't have to wait long for recess to finally arrive. Children stream outside with glee.
Those who remember Izuku's and Katsuki's challenge circle around the two, curious eyes fixated on the winged boy.
Pointing a bold finger at Izuku, Katsuki declares. "Well, Deku? Let's see you fly! If you can I might consider making you my sidekick!"
Izuku has no desire to be Kacchan's sidekick, but no way will he back down from a challenge!
Izuku has been feeling good lately, and he feels confident that his wings will finally let him into the sky. He's four now! He's a big boy with big wings that are going to show Kacchan that he'll be a great hero too!
Izuku makes sure there is enough space surrounding him, and once he confirms there is, he spreads all six of his wings out. They stretch out at his sides, the sun making them shine even whiter in its light. The children squint against their brightness and shield their eyes.
The wings are brought upwards, they stay there for a few moments to kiss the sun before they are brought down. They flap and flap, sending dirt flying as they work vigorously.
Please, Izuku begs. Please let me fly!
His face is screwed up as he strains his wings harder, faster, to lift him up.
But it's no use. Soon his wings grow tired under the pressure and he stops, out of breath. His wings drooping as he pants.
The children observing grow disappointed and disperse. Running off to the playground.
Catching his breath, Izuku looks up at Kacchan who is still watching him.
Izuku gives a little laugh. "I thought I could do it."
Katsuki just shrugs. "You better hurry and learn, or I'll leave you behind, Deku." He looks around the playground and shoots a smirk at Izuku. "I'll race you to the slide!" And with that he shoots off.
Izuku gasps and races after him.
Feet pounding on the ground, Izuku soon surpasses Katsuki. Something the blond boy notices with a yell of indignation.
Izuku's hand slaps the slide's metal ladder and he starts to scale it with a cry of victory.
But Katsuki isn't giving up so easily! He reaches the slide a second later, trying to overcome Izuku on the climb upwards. He grabs at Izuku's ankle to slow him down until the two boys are side by side on the narrow ladder.
They both arrive to the top of the side, pushing against each other to be the first one down. Katsuki gives a shove that is too rough, and Izuku loses his footing. The boy gives a yelp as he tumbles off the side of the railing, hearing Katsuki shout.
"Deku!"
Izuku's stomach drops in terror as he watches to ground speeding closer to him, squeezing his eyes shut tight to prepare him for the crash.
It never comes.
He slowly cracks a single red eye. And then shoots them both open with a gasp.
The ground was a few inches from his nose as he hovered above it.
Craning his neck, he can see his wings weren't doing anything to keep him in place.
Then how was he-?
Levitation?
Izuku gives his wings an experimental flap. A shrill of pleasure runs down his spine as he effortlessly hovers higher.
Flailing a bit, Izuku rightens himself with small flaps. He looks into Kacchan's shocked face as they were now eye level once again and smiles brightly.
"I'm flying!" He announces with fervor. "Look! Look! I'm flying! I can fly!" He laughs with glee as he wobbly flies around the playground.
The wind hugging him as it ruffles his hair. His classmates cheering and laughing as they run following where he went.
Izuku felt free. It was exhilarating.
It was one of his happiest moments of his life.
The moment came to a screeching halt as a torrent of pain shoots through Izuku's body, sending electric currents throughout his limbs. It was excruciating. He has never hurt more in his entire life as it felt every one of his nerves were being alighted with hot fire. His vision brightens into a forever never ending white that burns his eyes as his ears ring into a fevered pitch.
As soon as it struck, it vanished. Leaving Izuku angel spread on the ground, concerned faces looking down at him.
"Are you ok?" A worried voice asks him.
Izuku sits himself up.
"Yeah, I'm… fine." He replies. And he realizes this was true. He was fine.
Lifting his hands, he flexes them. No pain or discomfort makes itself known.
"Clumsy Izukun!" Someone chirps, bringing Izuku back to reality. He gives a shaky laugh at the crowd.
"Guess I'll have to be more careful next time." He laughs as he stands up.
Before he or anyone can encourage him to fly again, a teacher announces it's time to return back inside and Izuku shoves the moment to the back of his mind.
When his mom arrives to pick Izuku up, he runs up to her wasting no time as words tumble out of his mouth in a flurried rush. "I flew! I flew today! I got to fly outside! It was so soso so cool! My wings don't let me in the air it's levi-levita- it's a floating power! Like you when you can float stuff! And then- then I can fly with my wings and it's so easy! Well it was when I was doing it, I can't really get it to activate again…" He trails off momentarily before brightening. "But I did it! I flew!"
His mismatched eyes gleam up at his mother, happy at himself that he has passed on this very exciting, important news.
His mother smiles down at him and she bends down to lift him up. "That's great news! You're turning into my little angel more and more every day, aren't you?" She punctures the last bit of her sentence with her finger booping Izuku's nose. He gives out a small giggle.
They both head home, the memory of Izuku in pain forgotten.
The next morning has Izuku blurrily blinking his eyes open with a yawn.
He sits up, his blanket sliding and pooling into his lap as he stretches. First his arms as they reach upwards. Then his wings as they stretch out behind-
Izuku freezes.
Inko is finishing fixing up breakfast when she hears a thump! from her son's room.
She pauses.
"Izuku…?" She calls hesitantly.
When she gets no answer, she turns the stove off and looks in the direction of Izuku's door.
Did something happen…?
A shrill scream slices the silence and Inko finds herself running before her mind registers.
"Izuku!" She opens her son's door with a worried shout.
Then she pauses.
The first thing she notices is that his hair, that was green with white highlights just yesterday, was now a full, soft green. Not a strand of white was to be seen in the sea of curls.
The second thing she notices as he turns to her with big, watery eyes, is that both of them were green.
"Mama…" He weakly sobs out. Tears flowing freely down is chubby face as he whimpers. "My wings…"
And finally, that was when she noticed the third thing.
"My wings are gone!"
