A/N: To all those still following, thank you. Apologies on the delay. For me, these chapters have to come about organically and I didn't really know where to go for a bit. A surprise awaits, so I shall let you get to it! Reviews = love. ((Negative, non-constructive reviews will not be paid attention to))
Linda moved the wig once more before finally feeling everything was perfect. "There ya go, Jane. What do you think?" She moved aside so the woman could see herself in the full length mirror.
Jane slowly opened her eyes and saw herself as a woman, in women's clothing, for the first time in ages. "I feel like I'm wearin' my mother's clothes!" she teased.
Not picking up on the jest, a tear came to Linda's eye. "I couldn't be prouder if you were my own daughter, Janie," she shared before giving Jane a hug.
The taller woman blushed and hugged back. "I feel uh, exposed? As this? People see me. As Joe I feel like I just blend in."
Sal finally finished what she was doing in the kitchen and came in. As she did, she whistled, looking Jane up and down. "Wowza! I'd better get you out quick or my wife will get all kinds of ideas that I put into her head!"
Jane blushed deeper then stomped a foot. "You're not helping here, Sal! But since it's our anniversary, I promised Maura something special."
"I'm kiddin, kid! Lighten up. Also, are you gonna finally pop the question?" Sal asked.
"We can't get married, Sal, you know that. No matter how much I want to."
At that, Sal walked over to the dresser and pulled out a file. "You're right. You can't but Joesph can," she handed it over.
Curiously, Jane took the folder and opened it. Inside there was a birth certificate, new social security card, even documents of a bank account. "You…"
"You kept draggin' your heels on it so I had my friend do these for you anyhow. She said if you go see her down at the DMV she'll put a rush on a license, too. I didn't have a good photo or else that woulda been in there too," Sal added.
Jane shook her head then reached, pulling her mentor in for a hug. "You are just incredible. I guess I really do have two amazing mothers," she said pulling Linda into the hug as well.
The trio hugged and when it broke, Linda chuckled and fixed Jane's dress. "We'd better stop all this before we're blubbering and Jane's makeup gets ruined. I worked hard on all this. Not that I didn't have a lot to work with. You really are stunning, dear. You'd better go get your gal."
Seeing as she was still holding the folder, Jane looked to Sal. "I'd love to ask Maura to marry me, I just don't have a ring."
Sal gave a wink and went to her night stand. She took out a small box. "This was my grandmother's. I can't guarantee it will fit her, of course."
Jane blushed. "It's just a placeholder. I'm gonna go get her a proper ring when I have the time."
"I know, kid. I'm not worried," Sal said with a smile.
Linda suddenly had an idea and clapped. "Oh this is perfect! You can propose with Let It Be Me. I have a live group tonight. I'll ask Shelly to do that number. How does that sound?"
Jane smiled. "That sounds perfect, Ma. Thanks."
"Guess that makes me 'pop'? But really, get goin' or I'll propose to her first!" Sal teased.
With that, Jane gave another hug to both women and headed out. She had never been more grateful to have her own car. She knew she'd feel incredibly strange in a taxi dressed as she was. She was also grateful Linda had tasteful flats to go with the dress and she didn't have to attempt heels. 'I'd freakin' die, I just know it.'
As she pulled up Jane suddenly felt a pang of nervousness. Maybe Maura did only prefer her dressed as a man. 'What the hell? That's crazy! Not once has she shied away when we're in bed. Now? Get up there!' After a long, deep breath, she finally got out of the truck and headed to the door. After knocking, she patiently waited.
After checking her lipstick one more time in the hall mirror, Maura went and opened the door. At the sight, though not physically possible, she felt her heart catch in her throat. "J-Jane you're…"
The usually eloquent woman seeming at a loss for words made Jane worry again. "Silly? Hideous?"
Maura took her hands and pulled her into the house then kissed her deeply. "You are the most stunningly beautiful woman I have ever seen. You know it really isn't fair you can pull off men's clothes or women's."
After the breathtaking kiss broke Jane swallowed as she listened. "You could try a suit sometime if you wanted. But for now we better get going. Reservations at 6:00."
"You don't want your present?" Maura asked innocently.
Jane gave a smirk. "Baby? You are the best present. I don't see you topping that unless you're hiding a twin!"
Maura blushed. "Tonight then after we stop by and take care of Jo, I'll give you quite a few presents, Miss Rizzoli."
When they got to the restaurant, the maitre d looked confused. "I do have you down, Miss Rizzoli. I see a table for two? No boyfriend?"
Jane shook her head. "Just two ladies out for the evening. May we get seated?"
"Of course," the man grabbed 2 menus and showed them to their table. He pulled out each womans seat. "Susan will be over momentarily. Enjoy your meal and evening," he said politely and went back to his post.
The women silently set to looking over the menu. "Everything sounds delicious. What are you in the mood for?" Maura asked.
Jane hushed her voice and leaned over. "You."
Before Maura could respond, an attractive woman came up to the table. "Hello, ladies. My name is Susan. I'll be your server. What can I start you off with?"
"Thank you, Susan," Jane looked for a moment and realized she knew the woman from Sal's. "My stunning," she softly said, "date will have," she looked to Maura.
"Your best sauvignon blanc," she answered.
At the statement, Susan gave a wink and wrote down the order. "And for you?"
"Usually I'd say beer, but dressed like this, I'd say 2 sauvignon blancs, please and thank you."
"I'll give you both time with the menus," she lowered her voice and leaned in. "You both look gorgeous. If I didn't have a gal, I could happily die to kiss either of you." After that, Susan headed off for their drinks.
Maura blushed and tried looking over the menu again. "I thought she looked familiar," she mused. "But really, what are you thinking?"
"You know I love a good steak. I'll make you happy and get a salad with it. You?"
"I'm thinking the roast chicken with a salad as well and the steamed vegetables," she answered.
When Susan brought the drinks, she took their orders. After, she leaned in and whispered to Jane, "you really are a vision. Those suits are hot, but this side should come out more, too. You're gonna turn every head."
When she left, Maura looked to Jane. Noting the deep blush she asked, "what did she say?"
Jane set her wine glass down after taking a sip. "She just complimented me as you had, darling. Nothing to worry about."
Maura smiled and gave a wink. "I know. I trust you. So you're really not going to tell me what all to expect for the evening?"
"Nope. Just enjoy the experience," Jane ordered.
When they finished their meals, Maura had insisted on paying. Since it was their anniversary, Jane didn't feel like arguing and let it be. Once back at the truck, Jane reached into the glove box and took out a blindfold.
"Are you serious?" Maura asked in disbelief.
"Very. Now please turn just so so that I can put this on you."
While feeling silly, Maura complied and turned.
Jane put it on then when Maura repositioned, she set off.
Though not able to see, Maura could tell they were at the docks due to the sounds. While she couldn't lie, she told herself to act surprised wasn't a lie, it was pretending for her love.
Jane parked and got out. She helped Maura and when they got to the door, she took the blindfold off. "I know you already knew where we were," she said.
Maura kissed her cheek. "Still, it was cute."
Jane knocked on the door and waited.
"Password?" A gruff voice asked.
"Mareno," Jane said.
The door began to slide open.
As they walked in, arms linked, Jane could feel eyes all over her.
"I'll bet even Big Gino tries to pick you out," Maura said.
For a moment Jane stopped. "Up, babe. Pick me up. I don't care about all that. Tonight is just you and me," she said. "If she does I wouldn't give her the time of day."
When they got up to the bar, Sal came around and gave both women big, warm hugs. "My gorgeous girls! I'm gonna have to do a beauty contest here, I swear! What can - oh! Wait, it's your anniversary. I'm gonna make you two something special," she said before going behind the bar.
Linda came over and gave both women a hug as well. "Congratulations on the year, ladies. After this song ends, are you feeling like that special request, Jane?"
Jane held her clutch a little tighter and nodded. "I'm thinkin that sounds good, thanks."
Sal set the drinks down and smiled. "My own creation!"
The couple took sips and looked surprised. "It's...different," Maura said.
"I'm not usually a cocktail person but it is pretty good," Jane concurred.
"I think I'm gonna call it the J&M, for my girls," Sal shared.
As the song started, Jane set her drink down and looked to Maura tenderly. "Maura? How I feel for you? Sometimes it's like there aren't enough words," she started. "I have adored this past year with you, but I need more." Before Maura could ask, Jane got down on one knee, taking the box out.
Realizing what was happening, tears welled in her eyes and threatened to fall. Seeing the box and hearing the words, the tears did fall.
"Maura Dorthea Isles, will you do me the honor of spending your life with me?"
So overwhelmed she was at a loss for speech Maura excitedly nodded. "Yes, Jane, a thousand times yes!" While the ring was slightly too big, when Jane stood, Maura flung her arms around her and kissed her deeply.
The entire place erupted into cheers and congratulations.
"I don't think anyone is flirtin' with either one of us tonight, baby," Jane said with a grin.
Suddenly it struck Maura. "How are we going to marry, love?"
Jane motioned with her head toward Sal. "Pop got me papers. Joseph officially exists. So, you and he will get married."
"So, you're now my father-in-law?" Maura asked their dear friend with a smile.
Sal chuckled and grinned proudly. "Guess I am!"
Maura went behind the bar and gave her another hug. "Well, thank you so much for helping all this come together."
"Of course. Janie has always felt like family. She said Linda's her new Ma so naturally that makes me 'Pop'. At least we know she isn't marryin' ya because she put you in the family way," she said with a grin.
Maura chuckled and headed back around. "So you're where Jane gets the inappropriate comments?"
"She absolutely is!" Linda answered as she came up to them. "Congratulations, darlings," she hugged them both.
"Thanks, Ma," Jane said with a grin.
