Chapter 1: Surprising Discovery

Hey everyone I'm back with a new story. I have always been a fan of Greek Mythology and I was inspired to do this story after seeing the animated comic Heart in the Stone Medusa and the Blind Baby. I hope you like what I have planned. Please Review and Enjoy.

Our story begins with a woman named Medusa. She was once a beautiful woman until one day she had been cursed with snakes in her hair and her appearance had changed to the point she was so frightening that if anyone looked into her eyes they would be turned to stone.

For the longest time, Medusa thought her heart had been turned to stone as well for fear there was not a living thing in all the world that could love her.

One night in a small town in Greece, everyone was turning in for the night the farmers and merchants were closing up and all the people were going home to their families.

As an elderly man was closing up his pottery shop, he heard footsteps. Turning around he saw a cloaked figure walking along the empty streets.

"Hey!" He calls out getting the figures attention. "Best find shelter for the night, dangerous creatures tend to come out around this time." He warns.

"I'll keep that in mind." The figure said revealing its voice to be a woman under that cloak.

Walking out of town the woman made her way to the forest when thunder clouds started to fill the sky.

As thunder echoes, the woman looked up to the sky. "Zeus." She said softly when lightning lit up the sky revealing the woman's face to be green and scaly.

The woman continued walking as the rain started to pour down for about an hour when she heard a soft hissing noise.

"I know you don't like it, but there's no shelter anywhere nearby." She said when she heard a hiss getting her attention.

Looking down the path, she saw a house with a torchlight up ahead. She narrows her eyes knowing full well there were most likely people inside it.

Slowly she walks up to the front and sits down under the roof to rest her legs.

'I don't need to rely on the living. Stone is perfect. It does not lie, or betray, and I never have to worry about it.' She thought when she heard movement by the door causing her to jump and cover more of her face.

"Oh hello. I thought I heard someone." Turning around she saw a woman in a purple tunic standing by the door.

"Sorry I just needed some rest." She said as the rain stopped coming down.

"It's no trouble. Would like to come in? You look like you could use some water." The woman said.

"I think I'd rather leave." She said when she trips on a rock and fell to the ground causing her hood to fall off.

"Are you okay?" The woman runs over to help her off when she turns revealing her hair was made of snakes causing the woman to scream in horror as she instantly turned to stone from the eyes of Medusa.

"I tried to warn her." Medusa said standing up when she heard movement and saw a man run out with dagger and saw his wife had been turned into a statue.

"You monster!" He roars charging in to slice her neck but one look from Medusa and he turned to stone as well.

"I've done you and your wife a favor." Medusa walks up to them. "As stone, you will never have to grow and suffer the pain of living. Trust me death is kinder than life."

Medusa was about to leave when she heard crying from inside the house. "A baby?"

Slowly walking into the house, Medusa looks around to see a small room in the back that had a cradle inside it.

The snakes on her head hiss as Medusa made her way towards the cradle.

Walking in Medusa picks up the baby so it could look her in the eyes.

Suddenly as the clouds from the storm started to part the moonlight shined down on them and Medusa saw the baby boy open his eyes to reveal they were cloudy.

"A blind baby?" Medusa said surprised as the baby boy looked right at Medusa and smiles thinking she was his mom.

Cooing the baby reached out and touched her face causing Medusa's eyes to widen.

'S-So warm.' Medusa thought as a tear slowly ran down her eyes.

For the first time since she was cursed to be like this no being alive has ever done this before.

To see a living thing look at her without turning to stone, to laugh, smile, touch. It was then that she realized. She may be able to turn things to stone, but that didn't mean her heart was stone.

The snakes hissed at her wondering what was going on inside her head.

"Be nice all of you. He's coming home with us." Medusa said as she walked out of the house with the baby boy in her arms.

Looking to the stone statues of what was once the boys parents Medusa felt bad for them but at the same time grateful. For had it not been for them she never would have found the baby.

"You probably can't hear me, but I promise I will love your child as if he were my own." Medusa said as she walked down the path.

Looking down the baby boy giggled at her as she smiled softly at it.

"Since I don't know your real name, I will have to give you a new name. How about…Nicodemus?" Medusa asks as the boy laughs liking it. "I like it too."

Walking out of the forest, Medusa looks ahead to see the sunrise on a beautiful valley with a lake, plenty of forest, and a canyon on the outskirts of a city.

"Come on along Nico. We have quite the future ahead." Medusa said.

The night began with Medusa being as cold as stone, but when the sun came up Medusa was happy for the first time since she had been cursed. She had found a reason to smile, someone to love and who can love her, as of today she would be something she never thought she could ever be…a mother.

And though she didn't know it at the time this small act would forever change the lives of her, Nico and many others.
