To say the mission was going well wouldn't have been a full truth. It had started off pretty well, with Tony flying in with Thor and taking out the inner defenses. Then, Natasha, Steve, and Clint managed to kill all the outer guards.
Other than that, it was a fairly normal Hydra base raid- except for the fact that the scientists had been experimenting with something the Avengers didn't know about.
"Anyone spotted anything unusual?" Tony Stark, genius, billionaire, Playboy, philantropist, and Ironman, asked while JARVIS ran a scan for encrypted data. It wouldn't have been a problem for the AI to hack into it.
Steve breathed out a sigh of relief before responding to Tony over the comms, "Nope," His shield flew back towards him from across the room and Steve caught it swiftly, "Oh wait, I'm going to check out the labs."
"Might want to get that vision checked, old man," Natasha teased while walking right past the Captain to investigate.
"You might want to remember who's in charge here." Steve followed the spy into the room, immediately noticing the smoke rising from one of the tables. Tony soon came in despite the fact that they were certain they didn't need him. He also lowered his face plate so they could see his 'handsome face'.
"What the hell is this?" Tony's mouth scrunched up and his nose wrinkled, making him look like an edgy kid. He picked up a small disc and examined it between his fingers, not caring what it could do.
Steve, the rational one, didn't approve and he was sure he made that point clear, "That could be dangerous, Tony. How about you look at it in the lab later?"
Natasha snatched the unknown device from the billionaire and said loudly, as if to make sure he completely understood; also to cut off his protests (more like whines), "Can't believe I'm agreeing with Rogers, but-"
Suddenly, sparks flew out from the disc and the lights starting flickering. The three of them jumped out of its range to watch it from afar. It started spinning, faster and faster before making an ear splitting sound that rang like a sharp pitched bell.
Their hands went up to their ears to try and communicate with Thor or Clint, and block out the noise, but a bright, white, and very cliche flash distracted anyone from that objective. The three Avengers didn't even get the chance to hear the sound of their own bodies hitting the floor with a soft thud.
The last thing that Clint and Thor had heard was a light groan. They had no clue who it came from, but the archer was sure to have an old man joke ready if it was Steve.
"Man of Iron, is everything alright?" Thor's booming voice could be heard from across the base, making the comms pretty obsolete. He swung his hammer at the last Hydra soldier- that is, before the arrow flew and hit the guy in the chest.
The God turned towards Clint while he merely shrugged and lazily grinned. It soon disappeared though, as he tried to contact his friends with little success.
"Tony?" Silence.
"Nat?" Silence.
"Steve, I swear to god if you don't respond within the next three seconds-" Thor, who was chasing after Clint as he started sprinting throughout the halls, crashed into him as the marksman fell limp to the linoleum tiles.
Thor commanded JARVIS to call Bruce and track the rest of his colleagues. Then, he ran out of the base while carrying the resident archer bridal style to the quinjet, where Bruce was waiting. "He collapsed?"
Thor nodded before JARVIS replied, "Stark, Romanoff, and Rogers have gone into a similar condition as Barton." He paled and went back into the base, following the tracker after lying Clint on a seat.
Bruce turned his attention back towards him and felt for a pulse. There was one, but it was acting... Off. The normally steady pulse was now going haywire. Up and down, up and down. Slow and fast, slow and fast.
After running a few scans, he concluded that nothing was wrong with Clint Barton. Bruce got the same results with the others once they were brought in by Thor. They retreated back to the tower where a group of doctors rushed the unconscious heros to the medical center.
A strike team from SHIELD was sent out to investigate the base and the labs. They weren't expected to return within the next twenty-four hours, however.
The tower felt oddly quite and peaceful- too calm for the scientist and God's liking. The liquor cabinet had not been raided. There was no old fashioned dinner being cooked up by a super soldier who begrudgingly agreed to cook. No Natasha threatening a certain someone for whatever reason, and not even a single sound of scurrying coming from the vents.
Both Thor and Bruce knew one thing; they had to get their team back- soon.
