(AN) Hello everyone and welcome to the first chapter of a trilogy of one-shots focusing on three of my favourite couples set during the lockdown. And our first couple is Jimmy and Breena, so I hope you all enjoy and remember to Read and Review.
Disclaimer; I don't own NCIS. All characters and locations are owned by CBS and Belliasauras Productions.
Chapter One
Autopsy Gremlins
Jimmy and Breena were lying flat on their bed, utterly exhausted after yet another hard day. Ever since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic the couple had been working over time. Breena had been helping her dad and others at the funeral home, ensuring that they didn't get overworked from the huge increase of dead bodies showing up. For Jimmy it was a similar story, just with the setting changed to the Autopsy room at NCIS HQ. A large number of Navy yard staff had died from the virus, so the tables had barely been vacant. To make matters harder Palmer had no assistants to help. Ducky had been forced into isolation with Gibbs and Dr. Hampton was overworked herself. It also didn't help that he along with Director Vance had joined Kasie in the peaceful Anti-Racism protests that were now sweeping the nation.
When's this gonna end?" questioned Breena in a tired sounding voice.
"Sooner rather than later I hope," said Jimmy before squeezing his wife's hand in reassurance, "Just be thankful you and Ed have assistants. I'm just stuck on my own."
"And joining those protests can't be helping," teased Breena before giving her husband a mock suspicious face, "I hope you haven't been taking part in any of those violent protests. Gibbs told me about what happened that time you took Nick to an Art class."
Jimmy simply chuckled before sharing a kiss with his wife. "Don't worry I haven't," he assured her, "Wouldn't be a good example for Victoria."
While the increase in their workload was bad, the couple felt that there was something far worse. Due to them working with infected, dead, bodies, Victoria had been forced to live with her aunt and uncle which she wasn't too happy about at first, but she eventually settled in. Both parents and child missed each other greatly and Jimmy and Breena longed for the day when they could hold their precious daughter.
"I think we'll get through this," stated Palmer, "We've been through way worse. Remember when Victoria caught measles? Or how about the times I've been in danger."
"Those were very scary," replied the blonde, "I was scared, I didn't know what to think."
Flashback
It was a dull evening in 2017 and Breena was in the living room tidying up Victoria's toys. After putting them away she walked over to Victoria and scooped the baby up into her arms.
"Come on Tori, time for bed." cooed Breena as she climbed up the stairs.
"Awww mommy, me no sleepy yet." claimed Victoria before yawning.
Breena simply chuckled before entering Victoria's room and placing her in her crib. "Goodnight sweetie," whispered Breena gently. "Mommy loves you."
The woman then gave her daughter a hug before walking out of the room. After shutting the door Breena went downstairs and that's when her phone rang. Thinking it was Jimmy Breena answered. "Hello?" she answered.
"Ahh Breena there you are," called out Ducky's voice, "Errr listen you may want to turn on the news. There's something you need to see."
Breena began to feel a sense of worry growing. Heading over to the sofa Breena sat down, switched on the TV and flicked over to ZNN, making sure to keep the volume on mute. The blonde gasped in horror at what she was seeing. It was a shot of a building and sitting on the ledge was a young man with a slightly irritated expression and gripping on to his arm was a nervous looking Jimmy.
"Oh my god!" cried the blonde in a panicky voice, "What's going on?"
"We were called out to a crime scene involving a Navy Captain named Paul Smith. He had been struck by a speeding car," explained Ducky, "His son Ryan blames himself and as you can see Mr Palmer is currently attempting to stop him from jumping."
"Whoa Jimmy's terrified of heights," cried the blonde in amazement and pride, "So did Jimmy tell you the good news?"
"Good news?" replied the medical examiner in surprise, "No. What good news?"
"Jimmy passed the M.E. test." cried Breena in delight, "He's now a fully licensed Medical Examiner."
"That's wonderful news," said an overjoyed Ducky, "Well you're correct in your assumptions. Mr Palmer hasn't told a single person on the team. How long have you known?"
"He only got the news yesterday," answered Breena before looking worriedly at the TV, "We're all very proud of him. Let's just hope he survives this and stops that poor kid from jumping."
"I'm sure he'll be fine." assured the elderly Medical Examiner.
For the next few hours Breena kept her eyes focused on the news, her heart drumming against her ribcage. The blonde finally breathed a sigh of relief when with help from Torres Jimmy and the young man came off the ledge and through the nearby open window.
An hour later Jimmy finally staggered through the front door looking exhausted. Breena instantly leapt off the sofa, charged towards him and hugged her husband tightly with him happily returning the hug. "Oh Jimmy, thank god you're alright!" cried Breena in relief, "That was a very brave thing you did. But I'm amazed you managed to go up there, I couldn't get you to fix the roof that one time."
"Oh trust me, I was scared," answered Palmer while smiling, "On the inside I was crapping myself the whole time. But I knew that I had to stop the guy from jumping so I just put on a brave face and did it."
"Well that was a very brave thing you did and I'm very proud of you." stated his wife.
The two then exchanged kisses.
End Flashback
"You certainly know how to surprise a woman," remarked Breena as she stroked Jimmy's cheek, "There was also that incident at that Diner a short while back, and you managed to save Kasie and several innocent people."
"And we've always been there for each other." said Jimmy.
Flashback
It was March 2014 and Jimmy and Breena were cuddled up to each other on the sofa, crying silently. They had been looking forward to raising a child and they'd been so close, only for the Foster mom to suddenly change her mind, even though she'd promised and had already signed the adoption papers.
"H-how could she do this to us?" sniffled Breena, "She promised us."
"I know sweetheart, I know," said Palmer in a quiet and comforting manner, "I spoke with Gibbs, I-I was planning on giving the stuff away, ... But Gibbs convinced me that I should fight ∨ what we both want. And that's what we're going to do Bree, keep fighting."
"He's a wise man." remarked Breena, wiping the last few tears away.
"Breena can I ask you something?" began Palmer.
His wife simply nodded.
"Do you think I'm worthy of you?" asked the medical assistant, "I mean I know I love you and you love me. But am I even worthy if I can't give you what you want?"
Palmer was about to continue but Breena placed her finger on his lips before gently squeezing his hand. "Don't you ever think that of yourself James Palmer," she began firmly, "I chose you because you're kind and sweet and honest, any woman would be lucky to have you. I don't care if we can't have a child right now, I don't even care if everybody else has babies before we do. I'm willing to wait with you because I love you."
"I love you too baby." replied Jimmy.
The two then hugged and shared a long kiss.
End Flashback
"And thanks to our determination, Victoria came into our lives." stated Palmer, giving his wife a goofy grin.
"You helped the most." teased Breena before caressing Jimmy's cheek, "If we got through that, we'll get through this and see Victoria again."
The two then exchanged kisses before falling asleep, cuddled up to each other.
(AN) And that was the first little short. I hope you all enjoyed and remember to Read and Review.
I'd like to thank DS2010 and Bohogal1998 for some slight inspiration regarding the situation Jimmy and Breena are in, plus it's realistic.
Next chapter; Tony and Ziva have a heart-heart over Ziva's actions in Past, Present and Future, Family First, She and Season 17, plus appearances from Tali and Senior.
Until the next time, this is TimeLordMaster108 signing out.
