A/N: This is a MerDer fic. I love their story. I do not own Grey's Anatomy or its characters.
"Meredith, oh thank god. I need you to come to I-15. The car…. It's been an accident. Please come." Derek told his wife on the call, still shaken up after the events. While he was searching for his cell, a truck came out of nowhere and hit his car, thankfully on the other side. He had a few bruises but was overall fine.
Twenty minutes passed, after which he saw a similar car come into view. Meredith saw Derek and was shocked to say the least. She immediately halted the car and rushed to her husband.
"Derek, what happened to you? Are you alright?" She fired at him.
All Derek did at first was pull her into a bone crushing hug. After a few minutes, he let go a little bit to caress her face. "I'm okay. There was an accident here. I got down to help. I came back and was turning my car when the truck came and crashed. God, Meredith. I've never been so scared."
"Hey, I'm here. You're here. It's okay." She told, trying to calm him down.
"I'm not going to D.C. anymore. They can come here. I'm not leaving you."
"Good. I don't want you to ever leave. I don't even want to contemplate what would have happened if you were on that side of the car." She told him, herself scared.
"Come here." He once again pulled her into a hug, not wanting to let go.
After some time, Meredith put some space between them, and looked directly at him. "Tell me honestly, did you cheat?" She needed the answer, however much she feared what it would be.
"No. I promise you. She kissed me and I immediately pulled back. I swear on our kids, Meredith. I did not cheat on you. I love you, and only you." Derek told her, trying to reassure her.
"Okay, okay. Now, a fresh start." Meredith said, wanting to forget the entire year.
"A fresh start." Derek agreed.
"I have an idea. Let's do a vow renewal kind of thing, with our friends and family." Meredith suggested, wanting to do something different.
"You want to do a vow renewal?" Derek asked confused. This was very unlike Meredith.
"Yes, we never did anything with our friends. A small ceremony. Nothing big."
"That sounds perfect." He agreed. He would agree to whatever his wife said. His only priority right now was to make her happy and let he know that he was sorry for his actions.
"We should do it within the next couple of months." Meredith told.
"That soon, will we be able to plan?" He asked not understanding the rush.
"We better be. Cause I'm gonna start showing after that. And I do not want to look fat in my dress, which is not going to be white." Meredith told him smiling.
"Okay…. wait... You're pregnant? We're pregnant?" It took a second for Derek to fully understand but then his face broke int a huge smile.
"Yes… we're pregnant. You wanted another baby, right?" Meredith said, matching him.
"A vow renewal… another baby… we're starting afresh." Derek whispered hugging her.
"Yes, we are. I love you." Meredith told him, pulling back
"I love you too." Derek replied, caressing her face and tucking a few strands of her hair behind her ear.
"Now, get in the car, I'll take you to GSM." Meredith half ordered.
"As you say, m'lady." Derek smiled and obeyed.
Siting in the car, the first thing Meredith did was dial Cristina's number.
"Hey, Mer. What's up." Cristina answered phone.
"Hey, Cristina." Said Derek.
"Hey, didn't you need to go to D.C. to that research assistant or whatever." Cristina remarked, angry at Derek. She was livid when Meredith first called her and relayed the events.
"Cristina be nice. He did not cheat." Meredith told her best friend.
"You believe him?" Cristina asked Meredith, not caring that Derek was listening.
"I do. Now, that's the purpose of this call. We are doing a vow renewal. I want you there." Meredith told her in no uncertain terms and extended her free hand to hold Derek's. Derek brought the hand to his lips and kissed, thanking her for the support.
"Okay… wow. You've really forgiven him." Cristina said, shocked.
"I have. You should too." Meredith said.
"Derek…" Cristina started.
"Yes, Cristina…" Derek knew what was coming. He had guessed it from her voice
"Do something like that again, and I'll forget that you're the father of my niece and nephew." Cristina warned.
"Understood. And I really am sorry for what happened this past year. But, it's a new chapter now. And I'll be the best husband I can be." Derek apologised. This made him remember how all those years back when Cristina and held him hostage in an elevator and lectured him. He wasn't going to give her a reason to complain again. He promised himself that.
"Good, you better go back to being McDreamy." All three of them chuckled at that. "Now, as for your vow renewal, why don't you do it here?" Cristina suggested.
"In Switzerland?" Derek asked shocked.
"Yeah… I have a nice home, enough for a gathering of about fifty people. It'll be a nice break from Seattle."
"You know, it's not a terrible idea. I've seen the house, at least on video, and it's beautiful." Meredith said, being open to the idea.
"I can even call the cleaning service and get it tidied up for you guys." Cristina said, because all three of them knew that she never cleaned her place.
"What do you think, will they be willing to go?" Meredith asked Derek.
"I think it will be a welcome break for everyone. We can book a hotel for all guests, so everyone is together." Derek said, finally welcoming the idea.
"Cristina, we will talk to everyone and let you know." Meredith told her best friend.
"Sure. And guys, I'm really glad that the two of you are happy with each other again." Cristian said. She really was happy for them and believed that they were perfect for each other.
"Thanks Cristina." Derek said, glad that Cristina was coming around to forgive him. She was the most protective of Meredith and without er approval, their relationship wouldn't be able to survive.
"Hey, Meredith." Derek told after some time.
"Yeah?"
"I have an idea for us to manage kids and work." Derek started.
"Please do say." Meredith said, needing suggestions so that a repeat wouldn't happen.
"Let's combine our offices. We have research labs, if we need to be alone."
"What will we do of the other office?" Meredith asked confused.
"Put three beds. If we ever have late night surgeries and all, we can get the kids to sleep there, after daycare." Derek suggested.
"Won't they make noise?" Meredith said, concerned, it was a hospital and a lot of noise at night would disturb the patients
"My office is surrounded by other offices, that too of our friends. We can convert that." Derek gave the solution to Meredith's problem.
"That's a brilliant idea. See, will are already improving." Meredith said, giddily.
"I told, this time, we do it right. I know that I'll have to work to fully gain your trust again. But I'm ready to do anything for it." Derek told her seriously, giving her hand a squeeze.
"You are Derek. We will be alright. See, I'm being optimistic, so you can too." Meredith said, as it was Derek who was the optimistic one in the relationship.
"Okay, I'll set up a board meeting?" Derek asked, trusting that they would make it right this time.
"Yup."
Meredith and Derek soon reached Grey- Sloan, she led Derek to her office and bandage his bruises, not wanting to startle or scare the others. It was soon time for the board meeting. By the time they reached the executive conference room, all the other members were already there.
"Derek are you alright?" Richard asked, looking at his bruises.
"Yes, my car thankfully I am alright." Derek replied.
"What's the purpose of this meeting?" Bailey asked.
"It's a couple of things. Firstly, we want to combine our offices, and put beds in the other." Meredith started.
"Why? There are on call rooms, which are you know…. Used for all purposes." Jackson said, assuming the purpose.
"We want to make it a place for our kids to sleep when we both have surgeries at night." Derek told flatly, rubbishing what Jackson was alluding towards.
"Oh, sorry." Jackson said, embarrassed.
"That's a great idea. Even we take take advantage of it." Arizona agreed, pointing towards Callie and herself.
"Not a bad idea." Bailey said, agreeing as well.
"Wait then, there are two on- call rooms on the third wall that are adjacent to each other. We can break the wall, a make it a night nursery. The office that one of you spares can become an on- call room." Jackson suggested.
"How many kids, on an estimate." Richard asked.
"Let's limit it to board members and head of departments, because they have maximum number of erratic hours." Callie suggested.
"So, us, one, Bailey, one, Meredith and Derek, two—"Arizona started counting out loud.
"Two for now, nine months later, it'll be three." Meredith informed them with a smile. Hearing this everyone erupted in congrats and applause, happy for their friends.
"So, the both of you are alright?" Callie asked knowing they were having problems.
"Yes. When I saw the car today, I was so scared. He was more, but for once my heart dropped. I can't stay without him." Meredith told, grabbing Derek's hand.
"And I can't stay without her. I'll update D.C. through video calls, I'm not going there anymore." Derek told, making it clear that they were giving themselves a second chance, which they were not going to waste.
"That's really great. Congratulations guys." Arizona said, happily.
"Yeah, that's also what we wanted to talk about." Derek said.
"What's up?" Owen asked.
"We need leave." Meredith said.
"Who all and for how long." Owen asked.
"Well, all the people in this room, Maggie, Amelia, Alex, April who know the usual. And a week extra for us both." Meredith said.
"Us all?" Jackson asked confused.
"Why?" Bailey asked.
"Because we are renewing our vows and we want you all there." Derek said.
"Why would we need leave for that?" Arizona asked.
"We are doing it in Switzerland. At Cristina's house." Meredith explained.
"We all need a break. It'll be fun, three days. No patients, no work." Derek added."Our deputies can handle it. The hospital will not drown."
"Please guys, it's us." Meredith said, pleading.
"It needs to happen in the next two months, we can sit together and make sure that all other doctors of our departments are there in our absence." Derek told.
"Exactly, we can plan." Meredith agreed.
"Well, this is not something I want to miss." Richard said honestly.
"We all do need a break." Callie too agreed.
"I need to see what Yang is doing as well." Bailey said.
"So, decided?" Meredith asked excited.
"Yes, decided." Jackson agreed. They all needed a break. This was the perfect excuse.
"Don't tell the others. Dinner at our place, today." Derek told, not wanting the others to hear the news through the grapevine.
"Nothing formal, just pizza and beer." Meredith told, wanting to keep to dinner casual.
"That's the best kind." Arizona agreed.
"So, number of beds… six?" Jackson asked finally, wanting to start the preparation. The idea was really good and would help all senior doctors with their schedule.
"Yeah, that's good." Callie affirmed.
They discussed a few other topics that needed their attention, which enabled them to forgo the meeting that was scheduled the next week. They agreed to meet then after work to set up a plan for their absence. It would be the first time in about a decade that none of them would be in Seattle, they had to prepare, even if it was for three days. After that, their pagers rang indicating incoming trauma.
"Let's get back to work, guys. We need to set it up so that nothing goes wrong when we all aren't there. So, we need to start now." Owen said, ending the meeting.
Derek and Meredith were heading towards the car with the kids whom they had picked up form daycare early, needing the day to themselves. The kids were happy that their parents had picked them up, especially Derek. "Hey Meredith," Derek called, you was a step ahead of him with Bailey.
"Yeah"
"We forgot something." He told her.
"What?" Meredith asked confused.
"We didn't tell Cristina we're pregnant." Derek said, remembering their conversation and realising that they forgot to inform her.
"Uh… actually…" Meredith started guiltily.
"She knows. Of course." Derek understood in a second. He wasn't angry, he couldn't blame her as well.
"I had a mini panic episode. I didn't know who else to call. Please don't be mad." Meredith explained, not wanting to fight.
"I'm not angry." Derek told her smiling. He knew that Meredith's and Cristina's friendship is not something he should over think or get offended by.
They spent the entire day playing with kids and talking amongst themselves. The kids were having a great time with the both of them. It had been long since the were that candid with each other and they took comfort in knowing that they could make it work. This was the first step. They didn't even realise how fast time passed and soon the doorbell rang. Thankfully, the kids had been put to bed and it was just Derek and Meredith talking.
"Come on in." Derek said, welcoming the guests. Richard and Catherine had joined as well with the younger doctors.
The entire group came inside and assembled around the coffee table. Some on the couch, and the rest on the floor. They were all chatting and discussing a few unique patients they encountered in recent past. Meredith had ordered the pizzas and Alex and Maggie had stopped on the way over from the hospital to buy beer.
"So, what's the purpose of this dinner." Alex finally asked.
"Not that we don't enjoy it." Amelia added.
"We have some news we wanted to share with you people." Meredith said, slowly.
"It is good news right, seeing you two are too happy to be divorcing." Amelia joked.
"No Amy, we are not getting a divorce. The opposite actually." Derek said, rolling his eyes.
"We are renewing our vows, in Switzerland." Meredith said.
"In Switzerland? Let me guess, Yang's place." Alex said.
"Exactly." Meredith said, smiling.
"How will we attend. We can't all just leave." Maggie said, disappointed. She really wanted to be there with her sister.
"Well, that's a good thing that all members of the board are friends and have approved this." Derek said smiling.
"Really? You have?" Catherine asked, not readily accepting it.
"Mom, it's three days. The hospital won't burn down. We all need a break, badly" Jackson told his mother.
"He is right Catherine. We all do need a better purpose? And we will set it up so that the other attendings can handle the fort." Richard said, supporting Jackson.
"Well, Zurich is an excellent place, and beautiful this time of the year. Congratulations guys." She said, to the couple, after thinking for a minute, finally relenting.
"Thank you, Catherine." Derek said, relived that she agreed.
"So, we're all going to Zurich for three days." Maggie asked, giddily. She was every excited to be a part of the family.
"Yes, we are. Well we will take another week's honeymoon. We never had one." Derek said. Putting his arm across Meredith.
"Can you take care of the kids?" Meredith asked, hopefully.
"Don't worry, we can take Zola." Callie started "And I can take Bailey." Miranda finished.
"Great. That's settled." Derek said.
"Alex, you and Cristina will stand by me?" She asked him hopefully. She knew Alex didn't care much about that stuff, nor did she, but she was excited about it, and wanted him with her.
"Of course. Just don't introduce me as Maid of Honor."
"Don't worry, it's just mostly people in this room and Derek's sisters and mother, as it is."
"Cool then." Alex said, hugging Meredith. He was glad those two were working on their relationship. He saw mer this past year and knew that she wasn't as happy as she is with Derek.
Soon the pizza arrived and everyone except Meredith and Derek took a beer, even Catherine.
"Why aren't you two drinking?" Alex asked confused.
"If I can't drink, nor can he." Meredith told.
"Why can't you drink?" Amelia asked, not wanting to jump to conclusions, secretly dancing in her mind.
"Because I'm pregnant." Meredith announced, with a huge smile.
"That's great." Everyone who didn't know, got up to hug and congratulate the couple.
"Congrats, Mer." Alex whispered, hugging her. "I'm going to be an uncle again." He expressed, overjoyed.
"I'll get to be with this kid, since birth. yay!" Maggie added, ecstatic.
"Me too!" Amelia joined, while the rest laughed at their childishness.
"Wait, I'm guessing it'll be the same for you maternity and paternity leave, just like last time?" Owen asked.
"Oh yes. If I can't work, nor can he." Meredith said.
"Ooo.. more time without Derek, yay!" Amelia joked.
"As the lady says." Derek laughed., earning him an elbow in the ribs from Meredith. "Ow!"
Things were finally coming together for Derek and Meredith. She couldn't have been happier. Her husband was really back with her, not just physically and she was surrounded by friends and family, there to support her whenever needed.
