I was sitting outside on the porch with my laptop again. It was a nice day so I had decided to just work on my project outside. Emily and Sam had gone on a date earlier this evening, leaving me alone in the house. I didn't mind; they deserved to do whatever they wanted.
Reading through what I had written the day before, I heard some footsteps. I paused what I was doing to glance up, smiling shyly at Jared who looked just as awkward to be standing in front of the porch. "Uh, Em and Sam aren't here. They're on a date," I informed him with a wince.
Jared chuckled softly, giving me a fond smile. "I didn't come here for them," he commented off-handedly, making me blush.
"Oh…" I murmured shyly, giving him a smile. He smiled back as he took one of the seats beside me. I saved my page, closing the laptop before facing him. "Well, why are you here?" I asked him curiously, tilting my head to the side.
He turned to look at me with a raised eyebrow. "I was actually hoping I could get to know you. Maybe say, on a date this Friday?" He asked with eager eyes. My eyes widened at that and I opened my mouth only to close it in surprise. "Say yes, please? I promise to make it worth your while," he begged, his eyes desperate at wanting to spend time with me. Though I had no idea why, I wasn't exactly that interesting. Plus he was definitely out of my league, but asking me, of all people, out?
How could I say no to him literally begging me? I gave him a soft look as he continued to stare at me with a pleading one. "Okay. Sure, I'll go on a date with you." I agreed, shocking myself. I didn't know this dude, and I was willing to go on a date with him? Though I couldn't deny this pull towards the boy. Almost like I always wanted to be by his side. I wanted to get to know him better, know everything about him. That scared me a little, especially with how badly my last relationship ended in only two months' time.
Though in the end I was glad I agreed when the breathtaking smile overtook his features. "You will not regret it!" He promised and something told me he would be right. He glanced down at my laptop, curiosity entering his face now. "What were you working on?"
"My book," I stated casually, swiping my hand along the laptop fondly. Honestly this thing was probably due for an upgrade – I've had it for a few years, but it's never let me down.
"What's it about?" He asked in genuine curiosity, which had me launching into details about my project. He listened with gusto, letting me gush about something I loved.
I don't know how long we chatted out there. It seemed like ages until Sam and Emily's car pulled into the driveway. It was like I've known him for a long time instead of just a couple of days, even though we barely talked to each other. Honestly it felt nice.
Sam raised an eyebrow when he saw the two of us talking, though a knowing look was on his face. Though what that look was for, I wouldn't know. "Hey Sam, Emily; how was the date?" I asked, glancing between the two of them eagerly.
"It was great. Seemed like someone kept you company," Emily smirked, glancing over at Jared who blushed, but shrugged his shoulders unashamed.
Jared stood up, giving me a look. "Can I have your number? So I can text you the details or call you?" He asked and I just nodded my head. The grin he gave me was unbearable not to smile back as we exchanged numbers. "I'll see you Friday, Eve," He was beaming by the end, giving Sam a nod before walking off with a skip in his steps.
"Friday?" She prodded with a grin on her face.
I blushed a deep crimson. "He might have asked me out on a date…" I mumbled underneath my breath, making Emily squeal in delight.
"Oh Evie that's wonderful!" Emily clapped happily, her eyes were bright as she glanced over at Sam who was also smiling at the scene.
"Jared is a good kid. He'll treat you right," Sam stated and there was something else underlining that tone of voice. Like he would make sure Jared treated me right, or he faces the consequences of his wrath. I could see it and saw how the boys respected Sam.
"Have you eaten tonight?" Emily commented lightly with a raised eyebrow, changing the subject.
"I had mac n cheese with chicken bits in it!" I piped up with a grin, making Emily roll her eyes. What can I say; the most simple meals are sometimes the most delicious. I mean, cheese, chicken and noodles; what's not to love? Add a little bit of buffalo sauce and that shit is delicious.
"Simple. I like it," Sam nodded his approval, making Emily roll her eyes though she had a fond smile on her face.
"Do you even have a date night outfit?" Emily asked, raising an eyebrow at me expectantly. That's when Sam decided it was his cue to leave, giving me a pat on the shoulder as if to say 'good luck' and walked past me before I could give him my 'save me' look.
Sighing, I turned to Emily who was still giving me a look. "No. I didn't think I was going to be going on a date this summer," I defended myself. In hindsight that wasn't even in the plan. It was just a summer to get away from the family on the Makah res, and see my family here.
Emily clicked the bridge of her mouth in disappointment. "This won't do at all. We'll have to go shopping tomorrow!" At that I groaned. Shopping was not at the top of my to-do list. "I'll invite Kim along too. It'll be a girl's day!" Emily cheered eyes bright at the thought.
Though seeing Emily so happy at the thought of a girl's day, I couldn't help but smile. I wish Leah would come along, but something told me that she wouldn't if Emily was there. I didn't know how she felt about Kim, but with the way she has been here recently it's probably not a good idea to have her tag along. That thought made me sad, as we used to shop together all the time. However, getting closer with my sister and new friend didn't seem like a bad idea at all to me. "Yeah, a girl's day," I agreed, now looking forward to going shopping.
AN: I am really sorry this is a shorter chapter. I was trying to get some JarLyn, though I couldn't think of how to make it longer so I just stuck with that so that it wouldn't feel forced. I like it though. It feels natural to me, kind of?
