Take On Me

Draco/Seamus

What even would this ship name be? Dreamus? Seaco?

Draco is looking for a fresh start, a second chance. Only one person seems to be crazy enough to give him that.

Dedicated to Shay!

Draco pushes down the bitter feeling he has as he raps on the door. A friend of a friend of a friend knows someone looking for a roommate. Draco never thought he'd rely on a favour that somewhere along the line involved Neville Longbottom, but as the saying goes: beggars can't be choosers. He never imagined he'd be living in the Muggle world.

Not many people will say yes without meeting someone. Even less will say yes when hearing his name. In fact, everyone has said no. One person is crazy enough not to, and Draco believes there's a high chance he'll be murdered in his sleep.

The door swings open and Draco blinks. He tries to place the name of this Gryffindor - he remembers that much - but it takes him a moment. That's fine, because even though the bloke is expecting him, the other man seems to be sizing him up.

Seamus holds out his hand. "Draco," he offers, the Irish accent still as heavy as Draco remembers. The sound of his voice feels familiar, though they've never interacted much, and that's what causes Draco to reach out to shake hands.

Part of him is glad that Seamus has called him Draco, rather than Malfoy. It makes things here seem a little more friendly, though Draco remembers several explosions over at the Gryffindor table.

"Seamus," he says. "Am I going to last the night?"

The smile slips from Seamus' lips slightly. "You think something is going to happen to you?"

"Given your penchant for blowing things up…" Draco replies.

Seamus chuckles and the atmosphere feels even more relaxed. "Come in. The room isn't big, but it's clean and it's a roof, y'know?"

Draco nods, grabbing the handle of his suitcase and heading inside. This is his fresh start - his stepping out of his family's shadow and into his own life. This is his chance to be his own person.

Unfortunately, that person works at St. Mungo's on very low pay and can't afford a decent place to live. But, a job is a job.

"Let's celebrate. Fish and chips, on me." Seamus leads the way into the bedroom. There's not much in there, but Draco doesn't comment. He's happy for this chance.

"Fish and chips sounds great."

"And drinks. You can't celebrate without a night out on the town."

Draco envies Seamus' easy-going nature. It's quite strange to him to be around someone who wants to laugh and joke, even with the person scooping the chips onto the paper. Seamus is naturally charismatic and friendly, and Draco envies that. He himself puts a lot of thought into the best course of action, deciding what to say in certain situations. But Seamus also seems like someone who talks without really thinking things through.

Draco prefers this. Maybe there have been a couple of light digs aimed at him, but Seamus isn't fake. That's what Draco needs in his life right now, someone who tells it like it is.

"Thanks for the food," Draco says, as Seamus returns to the table and sits down. He looks much more at ease in the plastic chairs than Draco feels, and opens up his own paper.

Draco copies his actions, opening his too. "I thought we were eating indoors?" He tries not to sound pushy, aiming for curious, and Seamus glances up from where he's putting way too much vinegar on his chips.

"That was the plan, but you said you've never actually spent time in Muggle London before."

"That's true," Draco murmurs.

"You've also said you've never had a night out with the guys."

"Also true."

"You're missing out, Draco," Seamus insists, a wide smile on his lips as he pours out more vinegar. "We'll eat, go to the pub for a few drinks and have a laugh."

Draco hesitates. "I'm not sure if I'll be much fun," he finally admits. He can see Seamus being the life of any party, but he can't imagine being fun himself. He wasn't brought up in the same world as Seamus, as anyone outside of his house. He tries to find the words to explain this, and Seamus listens, no judgement on his face.

"Maybe that's the problem - you've been stuck trying to uphold family tradition and all that crap and you've not had a chance to be young," Seamus insists. "No better time than now - cheap food, cheap drinks and fun."

"What does 'fun' entail?" Draco finds himself checking. All he knows about Seamus is that he likes things exploding, and that does worry Draco a little.

Seamus' grin widens. "Well, what do you know about karaoke?"

"No," Draco insists, appalled at the idea.

Seamus laughs. "Oh, that'll happen," he replies, finally lifting a soggy chip from his paper. "I'm determined to bring out the fun-loving Draco, and I have a good feeling that the other Draco wants to get drunk, stand up in front of strangers and sing."

Draco hates the sound of that more than anything. "I think I'd rather hug Voldemort again," he mutters.

Seamus laughs and the sound causes Draco to smile. He reaches for the fizzy drink and brings it to his lips. At home, his father disapproved of things like this. They had properly cooked meals, never casual take-aways. They had proper drinks rather than fizzy ones.

But Draco is already having a great time. He's enjoying his food, the 'coca cola' that Seamus gave him, and more than anything, the company.

"I've got plans for us," Seamus assures him.

"I don't know what you're planning, Seamus, but I don't like it."

Seamus laughs again and this time Draco can't help but chuckle himself.

xOx

"I knew there was a less uptight version of you," Seamus says, setting yet another drink down. Draco isn't drunk, but he's feeling more relaxed than he's felt in a very long time. Maybe ever. He's never realised how much he's needed time like this to unwind.

"You're right about needing to act young," Draco admits. His eyes follow one of the men who is heading to the bar, before he quickly pulls his gaze back. Usually he's more careful - he's always known what his family expects from him - marriage and kids - but right now, that all feels like a distant memory. A past life.

This is his new life now, though he's not sure if he wants Seamus to know those more intimate details. He's not sure he's ready for the world to see the real him.

One step at a time.

"You've got good taste, he's got a beautiful arse," Seamus says, nonplussed. "Not as good as yours though."

Draco stares at him for a long moment. "I'm sorry?" He tries to keep his tone neutral.

"For what? For having an excellent arse? Don't be. Yours was ranked best of Slytherin."

"W...what?"

"Me and Dean ranked everyone in a house. A little offensive now, I suppose, but we were younger and…" Seamus shrugged, unbothered. "Just trying in my own way to say that we're not in school, so you don't have to be embarrassed for checking a bloke out."

"I wasn't… I… I'm not…"

"Don't need to explain yourself to me." Seamus' voice is quieter now, less boisterous. "You are who you are, and I'm not going to go rushing to tell people your business. We're living together, and that comes with a level of trust. So whoever I see leaving your bedroom at any point - male or female - is your business and not something I'll repeat. But like I said, a level of trust, yeah?"

Draco nods slowly. He's used to holding onto information to see where it benefits him. "I've never had a friendship that's worked like that," he admits slowly.

"Then you've never had a real friend," Seamus is quick to reply. "It'll take Veritaserum to prise your secrets from my lips. When you're scared and insecure, that's when you need your people the most. And I'm here, okay. I've got you, Draco."

Draco smiles. It sounds to him like Seamus is considering this a friendship, and Draco doesn't want to argue with that. A real friend. A friend who likes his arse. It's a lot to unpack right now, but for the first time, he doesn't feel embarrassed or ashamed or like he needs to hide. For the first time, Draco can be himself.

xOx

Two nights out in a row and Draco has resisted the karaoke once more, though now he's spent one night out on the town with Seamus Finnigan, he can see the appeal of it. He's pretty sure that Seamus isn't going to give up on that idea.

He watches his new friend flirting with a girl at the bar nearby for a few minutes, and he silently judges the apple-green shirt that Seamus has decided to wear that night. The pub isn't packed and he can hear the girl giggling at whatever Seamus is saying. Draco pushes away the jealousy that's trying to rise up, glaring at the girl.

As though Seamus can feel his annoyance, he returns to the table alone. "Come on. Follow me."

Draco grabs his jacket and follows, frowning slightly. "Problem?"

"Not at all. I realised it's not fair to you, being here."

"What?"

"You're spending your life hiding that you like blokes, Draco. I know a bar just down the road. Maybe you'll get to snog a hot bloke."

"But what if… if someone sees?" Draco asks, though he follows Seamus with no intention of stopping.

"Muggle London," Seamus points out.

"But you won't meet anyone?"

Seamus grins. "Mate, I like birds and blokes," he assures Draco. "I'll be your wingman."

"Wingman?" Draco asks, both nervous and excited at the prospect of meeting a Muggle.

"I've got a lot to teach you," Seamus insists, though he sounds pleased about it. "It means that I've got your back. I have a good feeling about today."

Draco doesn't reply, but he gets it - he's got a good feeling too. It's not long before they arrive at another bar. "Do you want a beer?" Seamus asks as they walk inside. "My round."

Draco doesn't answer. His gaze drifts around the bar. It's got the same relaxed atmosphere as the one they just left, but there are men dancing together. One woman at the bar has her arm around another woman.

It looks so easy, and he wonders if he'll find it as easy as they do to show his true desires. But he's sure he can do this, because Seamus is there with him and he doesn't feel so scared and alone.

"We can leave whenever it gets too much for you," Seamus assures him. "But I'm here, okay? I'm your friend and I'm going to help you live a much better life. Just be comfortable with who you are because I happen to think that you are a pretty great bloke."

xOx

An hour of flirting and drinking. An hour of laughing and watching for Seamus, his friend staying nearby, helping Draco feel calm in a situation that would otherwise cause him panic. But all of a sudden it's stifling and Draco finds Seamus there, Seamus' hands clutching his own asking if Draco is okay. Seamus stumbles slightly and his grin is wider than ever.

He is now. Seamus just grins as he looks at their joined hands. He takes advantage of the situation, pulling Draco onto the dance floor, his hands finding Draco's hips as he shows Draco how to move. His body shifts closer and closer until they're moving in unison in a way that makes Draco feel too hot. If Draco hadn't been drinking so much, he'd have turned down the offer to dance, but alcohol makes it seem like a great idea, and having Seamus' body against his just further confirms that.

Seamus' hands grip Draco possessively and Draco's hands wrap themselves around Seamus' neck because he has no idea where else they can go. His heart pounds in anticipation because he knows where this is leading. The easy smile on Seamus' lips is overshadowed by the longing in his eyes.

So when Draco finds himself shoved up against the wall when they head off the dance floor, it doesn't actually come as a shock. Seamus' lips eagerly press against his and Draco's hands find the front of his friend's green shirt and he tries to pull him closer.

Draco should have expected this. Seamus had pretty much admitted to having checked Draco's arse out in the past, and loving what he had seen.

Music blares around them, and people dance and talk and there's so much noise, but Draco doesn't focus on anything apart from the wizard in front of him. But the kiss doesn't last as long as Draco expects, wants - needs. Seamus pulls away and he's watching Draco as though he expects Draco to run.

"Isn't this exciting?" he murmurs, grinning. "You okay?"

Draco nods.

"A lot for you to take in," Seamus comments. "I'm a little worried you're about to bolt or freak out or something. Should we stop there and talk about this another time?"

"Maybe," Draco admits. Now they're out of the moment, he's not sure how to proceed. Only that the kiss felt better than anything else. He's kissed a few girls before, but kissing Seamus is much more amazing. "I'm not going to run though. I liked that. You."

Seamus nods, but looks pleased. "Now what?"

Draco looks around. "Home?" he suggests. "I can't imagine dancing or kissing anyone else. Not after that."

"Usually this is where I'd suggest going back to mine and getting naked, but we can forgo the naked part. How about we go for a walk? Get some ice-cream or something. Great shop down the road." He hesitates. "I know this isn't how you imagined your life, Draco, so I'll make it easy on us. Take some time to think about your feelings over this, over what you want. Let's give it a week and see how you feel."

Draco nods. This really isn't what he pictured for his life. But he's trusted Seamus this far and Seamus hasn't led him astray as of yet, and he doesn't think Seamus ever will.

xOx

It's been a week since the kiss, since Seamus' hands clutched his hips, pulling him closer. A week since he was pressed up against him as Seamus taught him to dance. A week since Seamus shoved him against a wall and kissed him until he felt his legs would give way.

Draco knows that Seamus is giving him space to work out how he feels, and for the past week things have been nice, as they work out how to live in the same place together. But the one week here has already made it feel like home.

Draco hasn't stopped thinking about the feelings that Seamus caused with that kiss. It's been a week now and Draco is ready to talk. He gets home as quickly as possible from work, finding Seamus curled up on the old lilac sofa with a tub of ice-cream.

"Is that your dinner?"

Seamus glances away from the tv, spoon halfway between the tub and his mouth. "I got some shopping and there wasn't much space in the freezer, so something had to go."

"You could have cast a charm," Draco points out.

Seamus shakes his head. "Muggle flat, muggle way of living," he says, with a shrug. He's making it sound like a rule, but Draco gets the feeling that Seamus just wanted a reason to eat that ice-cream.

"Get a spoon and join me."

Draco goes to his room and drops his stuff in there, hanging his jacket on the back of the door before heading to the kitchen. He takes a peek into the freezer, and he's certain that he'd be able to move the things around and make space if he really tried. He can't help the smile on his lips as he learns another little fact about Seamus Finnigan. The list is getting longer than the two things he previously knew, Gryffindor and explosives expert. He's added so many things to that list, the latest being, has a sweet tooth.

He collects a spoon from the draining board by the sink and goes into the living room, dropping down next to Seamus. Immediately his roommate moves the ice-cream so it's nearer Draco.

Draco shifts closer and digs his spoon in.

"You're waiting to find out, aren't you?" Draco asks, scooping some ice-cream up. "You said a week - it's been a week."

"The thought has crossed my mind," Seamus admits.

Draco takes a moment to collect his thoughts before taking a deep breath.

"You're incredible," he starts, offering a tentative smile.

Seamus seems to pull away and Draco frowns, the smile fading fast. "What?"

"I was just wondering if this is the whole 'it's not you, it's me' conversation," Seamus comments. He doesn't look at Draco as he says this. "I get it, you're not out and I'm a Gryffindor—"

"We're not kids anymore," Draco tells him, frowning slightly as despair seeps into Seamus' tone. "I think we're past the whole Slytherin and Gryffindor thing, don't you?"

Seamus looks at him then. Since moving in, Draco hasn't seen Seamus looking dejected like this. "There's just a lot to consider before… anything. I'm not out, and I don't intend to be for a while. My family… I mean, Seamus, I was a Death Eater. Doesn't that bother you?"

"Draco, I accept every part of you. I've seen your worst but I think I'm now seeing your best and I want to see more of that," Seamus tells him. "As for you not being out - well, I'm not going to force you to tell people before you're ready. I like you and I have done since Hogwarts if you must know, though that's not the reason I agreed to let you stay. I never thought I'd have a chance with you, yet here we are. If you want to keep this a secret, then I'm happy to do that. But the condition is that you don't date someone else to keep up appearances."

There's something in Seamus' voice that tells Draco that he's experienced just that with someone else.

"Anything else?"

Seamus sighs. "I'd like permission to share this with my best friend, Dean. But I won't until you're ready."

"Can we wait until we figure out what this is?" Draco asks softly. "I can't stop thinking about that kiss, but I'm not ready for the world to know. Unless you have any other suggestions, I think that leaves us with two options. We continue with what happened, but secretly - though it's unfair of me to ask that of you - or we be roommates and friends and perhaps examine this again in the future."

Seamus considers the options for a couple of minutes and Draco clutches the spoon tightly in his hands as he waits for an answer.

"I don't know what I was expecting, but I know that wasn't it," Seamus finally says. "I honestly thought that you were going to say that we don't continue anything." He sighs. "I want to see where this goes. For all we know, it might not last long enough for us to have anything to tell. But damn, that was one hell of a kiss, and I've wanted to do that for so long."

"So where do we go from here?"

"We go on a date," Seamus says. Draco starts to panic, but Seamus grabs his hand. "Not like that. I mean, we'll know it's a date, but others will just think we're hanging out. Dinner and a movie."

"We can do all that here," Draco points out.

"Ah. Muggle cinema. Another thing you purebloods miss out on," Seamus laughs, amused once more. "Come on, I'm going to have too much fun showing you more about muggles."

Draco grins back. Though he likes knowing that Seamus has a more serious side, he's enjoying seeing how much Seamus enjoys life. So he allows Seamus to pull the spoon from his hands, insisting that they don't fill up on ice-cream.

It only takes Draco a few minutes to change out of his work clothes and into something more comfortable - jeans and a shirt like he's seen muggles wear in his few trips into the muggle world. He goes into the bathroom to fix his hair in front of the mirror and brush his teeth. Seamus is waiting at the door for him.

"Everything you do confounds me," Draco finds himself admitting. "This isn't where I thought my life would take me. I thought someone had it out for me, but now I realise that life is a test. Never did I imagine to be living in a flat in muggle London, working a basic job at St. Mungos and going on a date with a former Gryffindor." He can't help but smile. "But being here right now, I can't imagine anything else."

"Life is always a test," Seamus agrees. "Neville came to me, telling me you were looking for a fresh start, a second chance. I'm a pretty open-minded guy and I thought that if Neville believed that, then you were worth offering that chance to. But I never imagined I would get to snog you. Well, I have actually imagined that in the past but I never believed it would really happen."

"Did I live up to your expectations?" Draco asks, unable to keep the smug smile off his face.

"You surpassed them. When you're finally ready to tell people, they'll be so jealous that my boyfriend is so hot."

"I'm not just a pretty face," Draco mutters, trying and failing to hide his smile. He's just too happy, here in this moment.

"Of course. I'm not here for your pretty face. I'm here for that perfect arse." Seamus tries to reach around Draco to tap it with his hand, but Draco moves out of reach.

"So, our first date. Shall we?" Draco asks. His smile is so wide, he's sure his face is going to start hurting - he's not used to smiling this much.

Seamus' smile widens. "We shall."

Draco loves the domesticity of it all. Coming home from work to cuddle with Seamus on the sofa, the taking turns to cook dinner and tidy up and water the plants. It's been three months and Draco has never felt happier.

The waking up together though, that part is quite new, though it's just sharing a bed and not having sex.

But he knows Seamus hates the secrecy of the relationship, even though his boyfriend hasn't approached the subject again. Seamus hates keeping this from his best friends, he hates not holding hands in public (though the dark cinema and muggle pubs are the exception to that).

And Draco hates hiding this now he's found happiness. But he's scared.

They sit at the tiny dining table in the corner of the room with an ugly patterned lilac tablecloth. Draco bites into a bit of toast as he watches Seamus eat some porridge. Seamus is the most cheerful person Draco has ever met, but living with him, he's realised that Seamus makes up for that by being the most miserable person in the mornings.

He looks down at the tiny table. "This table is terrible."

"Bite me," Seamus mutters.

"Don't tempt me," Draco says with a smirk. "I was just thinking… maybe we get a bigger one. We could have some people over for dinner, some friends?"

Seamus frowns slightly, watching him. "Why?"

"We could start off slow and just tell a few people," Draco replies softly. "You could officially introduce me to Dean as your boyfriend. We could get Neville and Theo over. Blaise too. Just start off small and work our way up."

Seamus stares at him and Draco bites into his toast before it gets cold and gross, and waits for an answer.

"You want to tell people about us?" Seamus finally checks.

"Not everyone," Draco confirms. "I mean, this still has the potential to get out if people decide to talk, but I don't want this to always be a secret."

Seamus grins at him. His grumpy expression fading into something more joyful. "Brilliant! I'll go to that second-hand furniture place and see what they have. Should we make the plan for Friday night?"

Draco nods and stands up, Seamus frowning as he does. "Where do you think you're going?"

"Work," Draco says. "I've got to brush my teeth and get going."

"Can't you just skip being early for once?" Seamus complains. "I think we should celebrate this decision on the sofa with a half hour of snogging at the very least. Can I ask… why today? Why now? What's changed to make you ready to start sharing this?"

Draco smiles at him and quickly goes to the bathroom to brush his teeth. They pass each other in the hallway as Seamus heads to the bathroom, and meet a couple of minutes later on the sofa.

"You're the only person who really knows who I am and still likes me anyway," Draco begins. "I don't have to hide who I am from you - you've seen my worst but you also bring out my best. I never thought I could be this happy, but I am. I also never considered that a relationship could be so easy. But it's not fair to hide this, I know you want to tell people and I'm ready to give that a try, in a small dose. I want to make you as happy as you make me."

"I am very happy," Seamus insists. "Draco, You came along at just the right time. I have good friends, but they're all trying to pick up their lives after the war and have their own new starts, new relationships. I felt like I was just getting in the way of that. Dean insists I wasn't, but I still try and give them their space. It was feeling pretty lonely to be honest. I love having you here, and I'm glad you've started sleeping in my room - I'd rather wake up beside you." He pauses for a brief moment. "It is easy," he agrees. "Though lasting relationships always take work, but I'm willing to put that in because I really think this is going somewhere."

"I like waking up next to you too," Draco tells him. "Friday night will be us celebrating our relationship with our friends. We can decide the details later though. So… I believe I was promised half an hour of kissing before you make me late for work?"

"If you take that tone with me, I'll make sure you're later to work than that," Seamus threatens, pulling Draco closer. "We should do some celebrating now. Maybe you should just call in sick."
