Elena was reclining in bed, almost asleep, when she felt a cool hand with calloused fingertips rub against hers.
"Would you mind if I cuddled with you?" Came Madoka's sweet voice. She must have just gotten back from work, she had called Elena to say it would be a long day for her.
"Of course, do you really have to ask your own wife if it's okay to cuddle?" Elena threw her arms up for Madoka to grab onto and hoist herself into bed, rolling over to Elena's side and embracing her with one arm.
"In my eyes, yes, you should still ask."
"Yeah, that is right, actually. I'm too used to all my little siblings dog-piling me for group cuddles, I suppose! But yes, I would have asked first too." Elena said, one hand holding Madoka's free hand, the other hooked around her waist. She quickly noticed it wasn't just Madoka's hands that were cool.
"Why are you so chilly?" Elena asked, pulling closer to Madoka.
"The heater in my office is on the fritz, and after that it was snowing heavy when I walked out to my car. I'm too tired to even take a bath… The repairman should arrive tomorrow, at least."
"I see. Until then, it's up to me to keep you warm!" Elena said, raising her hand up to gently stroke Madoka's neck.
"Thank you. You really are my sun, aren't you!" Madoka chuckled.
"And you're my moon!" Elena replied, kissing Madoka on the nose. After that, for the next minute or so they just stayed there in each other's arms.
"Aren't you warm, though?" Madoka asked after a while.
"Well, of course I feel warm compared to you."
"No, not just comparatively. You feel warmer and cozier than normal."
"Oh, you mean, do I feel warm in a good way? Yes! I had the warm smiles of those I was interpreting for, after all!" Elena laughed happily. "…The working heater helped, too." She added after a few seconds, and Madoka giggled, pressing her forehead against Elena's and letting out a content sigh.
"I suppose not all of the coldness was bad, though. Some of it may have come from getting so coolly, calmly focused on my work! Even beyond staying a few extra hours, I… may have not noticed it was time to head home until about fifteen minutes later."
"Well, time flies when you're having fun, and someone like you can even find fun in reviewing rocket engine cleaning procedure, or something like that!" Elena said.
"Oh, you get used to it. Besides, don't you ever find what you're interpreting boring?" Madoka replied.
"Sometimes, I guess… but it's still fun to imagine that out there, there's people to whom it's a constant part of their jobs, something they're so familiar with that it's fascinating to them. Which I guess is how your job can seem so good to you, even if I don't fully get it." Elena yawned.
"Sleepy?" Madoka asked.
"Mhmm…" Elena mumbled, and so Madoka took both of her arms and wrapped them around Elena in a tight hug.
"Brr, now you're making me cold."
"But you're making me feel warm."
"Is that why you did this? Was it all a trick to steal my warmth?" Elena gasped over-dramatically. Madoka nodded with a sly chuckle, ruffling Elena's hair.
"You monster…" Elena's joke turned into a yawn halfway through. "It doesn't feel bad, though. I'm not too warm or too cold… how about you?"
"Just fine as well."
"Lovely… a perfect equilibrium from the two of us together… it just feels so right." Elena said. Madoka nodded, before Elena heard a snore and saw her sleeping wife snuggling right up beside her. Elena pulled the curtains down so the moonlight didn't shine right onto them, admiring just how beautiful the moon was as she did so. And when she woke up, the sunrise would be just as beautiful… but they weren't necessary. Elena had her cool, shimmering moon, and Madoka had her warm, radiant sun, right in this room.
