Authors note:
Well, this is brand new to me. Infact, this is my first fic, so please have some mercy. I'll take any sort of criticism, anything will help.
Depending on how well this does, I'm considering making this into an actual story. If it does become one, know that updates won't come in any sort of schedule, at least at the start.
Lastly, yes, this is "Women are the only people with aura" fic, and yes, Jaune/Akira is the main character. I know it's generic, but the idea has been in my head for awhile now, and I just needed to write it. I will have a couple of differences I feel make mine unique though.
Anyway, let's get started. Enjoy.
Chapter 1: The Return.
"Are you sure it's okay for all of us to go with you?" Pyrrha asked, her face scrunched up in worry. Her red hair blew in the evening air, as they unloaded their baggage from the van.
"I've said it once and I'll say it again, it's fine. My house is pretty big, and I trust you guys. It'll be okay." Joan laughed at her friend's expression, wiping the sweat of her face. The car ride to the station had been a long one, coupled with summer heat, she's surprised she hadn't passed out. The breeze helped, but she needed a nice, cool bottle of water sooner rather than later.
"I'm sorry if I sound repetitive. it's just that, our group can be a small bit…" She struggled to find the right word. "Chaotic" She settled on that. She still remembered the food fight they had in the cafeteria. It took her the entire night to wash out the soda in her hair, not that she regretted having it.
"Really now, how did you come to that conclusion?" Joan replied, staring at her best friend's face with a flat expression. And almost as if the universe heard what they said, Ruby fell to the ground after trying to grab her suitcase, which somehow got on to the very top of the tower of luggage in the back of the van, tripping on Weiss's suitcase and by proxy Weiss, causing the neatly folded components to spill out. Yang, having watched this happen, laughed out loud at her sister's plight.
Weiss was the first one up, and almost immediately started to scold her friend. "You Dunce! We haven't even gotten on the train yet, and you've already messed up something!" She had spent hours making sure that everything was nice and organised. Even double and triple checking to make sure everything was where it should have been. It didn't matter now though, not with her favourite shirt dangerously close to the gutter by the road.
"We should get going, our train is arriving soon. It would be a shame if we were to miss it." Blake remarked, not lifting her eyes from the page she was reading. Her black ears twitched with the assault of sound from the surrounding cars and people. After all that happened during the year, she had finally grown comfortable enough to have them out in the open.
Lei Rin nodded in agreement. "I second that. The closest other train arrives in three hours. It would be best if we got on this one."
"God, this is going to be so exciting!" Nora practically bounced in excitement. "And I can't wait to find out if you really do have seven siblings!"
"How do you not believe me?" Joan sighed, the topic being a constant point of questioning from Nora. "I even showed you pictures!"
She wagged her fingers, "Those can be faked, I'm only accepting hard proof! You agree with me, right Ruby?"
Ruby puffed her chest up, "Of course I do! I barely survived with one sister, I refuse to believe you lived with seven!"
"Six sisters, I have a younger brother."
Ruby gave out a small gasp. "I forgot about that, weren't we supposed to meet him here?"
"We are, in fact he should be here by now. I wonder what's taking him so long..." Joan frowned.
"Say, Joan." Yang turned to look at her friend. "You've never actually told us what he's like…"
Joan sighed again. "It's because I myself don't know much about him." Her brother was a sore point of discussion in the family. In Remnant, only females could have aura, thus only females could become a huntress. However, you would be mistaken to believe that this made females stronger than males. Aura, in the grand scheme of things, was a relatively new discovery. Only having been around for three to four hundred years, it had yet to make any drastic changes to the anatomy of humans. This, coupled with the fact only a low percentage of females even had the potential for aura, made the chance of any drastic change low. If anything, it had leveled the playing field, allowing both females and males the same physical durabilities.
But things were different in the world of huntresses. Children with aura normally had parents or family members who had it as well. Families with a long line of huntresses were not unheard of, such as Joan's family. Of course, this caused a disconnect between the two worlds. Having children grow up surrounded by women who could casually break walls and boulders would cause their cognition of what was considered normal to change. This ment, that to them, men were actually quite weak. And her mother, much like other families with a similar history, was extremely prideful of their ancestry. Finding out that her newest child was to be a boy was like a punch in the gut. She argued that the boy would never be able to grow up "normally" in a household such as theirs, and shipped him off to someone else, even paying them to take care of him. While she could see that they did have a point, she would be lying to herself if she said that was the only reason they did it.
She wanted to get rid of him, the stain of having a male child in their family was too much. The sad and harsh truth was that this sort of thing was not uncommon.
Opinions varied in the family, she herself did not hate him per-say, but it wasn't like she had some sort of emotional connection to him. She cared about him as she would care for a stranger, she didn't want to see him get hurt, but that was the extent of it.
"Umm, excuse me?" She blinked, having only now noticed that they were by where the train should have been. She must have been walking on auto pilot, following her friends. She turned around to meet the person who called her. He was tall, what was considered tall for civilians anyway, standing just shy off of 6 foot. His hair was black, the curls almost reaching his eyes. He wore blue denim jeans, ripped by his shins. A white, short sleeved button-down shirt layered on top of a black shirt he wore. He had a suitcase next to him, and a duffel bag on his shoulders.
"Yea? How can I help you?"
"Is your name Joan Arc by any chance?"
"And you are?"
"Oh, I forgot to introduce myself." He rubbed the back of his head in embarrassment. He held out his arm. "My name is Jaune Kurusu, and I am technically your younger brother."
Joan's eyes widened in surprise. "Oh."
"Yea."
If this was anything to go by, her train ride was going to be the awkwardest one in her life.
The train slightly shook as it sped up. Green fields filled the windows, as they moved deeper and deeper into the countryside. The area of land either by the border walls or just outside them. She took another side glance at his sleeping form. Ruby and Nora were having a very heated argument over who would get the top bunk bed, while Rin pointed out they might not even have bunk beds. They did, but she was too distracted to correct her. Pyrrha herself was sleeping beside her. It was just too weird for her to focus on anything else. She always knew that she did have a brother, but it never really hit her until now. This was the first time she had even seen him outside the occasional picture her mother showed her every couple of months.
What did he like? What were his dislikes? Was he smart? Athletic even? Did he even have any friends? When did a cat get on his lap?
She did a double take, and sure enough, there was a small black cat curled up on the sleeping boys lap. It even had a small scarf tied around its neck. Maybe it was a pet? It wasn't like there were any rules against pets in the house. Her mother even encouraged them to try to get one. But she made it abundantly clear that it would be their responsibility to mind the pet.
Ruby, noticing how distracted she was, tried to strike a conversation.
"Why is he coming back to your house anyway? I thought you said he didn't live with you?"
"He didn't, but some things happened between him and his caretakers. They said something like how they couldn't take care of the delinquent anymore or something. He's gonna be living with us until he finishes school, then he's being shipped off to collage."
Ruby appeared shocked. "Really?! What did he do?"
"I'm not too sure, apparently he got arrested for assault. Got sent to Vale for probation. He only got proven innocent near the end of his probation too."
"So he didn't do it then?"
Joan sighed, once again looking troubled. "I don't know. My mom did tell me the man got injured."
Weiss, having overheard the conversation, decided to give her own remark. "So we might be staying with a criminal?" She stared accusingly at the sleeping boys figure.
Yang rolled her eyes. "Hey, he probably won't be that bad. It's not like he killed somebody." She did make a mental note to keep an eye on him though. It never hurt to be a small bit careful. "Besides! It's summer vacation! We're not gonna let some guy ruin our fun!"
Through all of this, Blake hadn't said a word. Mainly because she was watching the cat on the boys lap. While the anatomy of the animal appendages for fanus weren't a one to one copy of their animal counterparts, they were pretty similar. She had been around her family enough to tell what they were doing by just looking at their ears. And strangely enough, the cats ears were making remarkably similar movements to the ones her family does whenever they were listening to something closely.
But that was impossible. This was just an ordinary cat. Maybe she's just seeing things.
Yea, that would make more sense.
If there was one word to describe the Arc family house, it was big. It wasn't even like the house looked extremely expensive. Infact, the house looked just like a normal house, just a lot bigger. Of course, it was a small bit more luxurious than that. But it had the same feel.
Her mother rushed out the door as they got out of the taxi that she had hired for them. Her mother ran up and gave her a bear hug and a massive kiss on the cheek. She was tall, even for huntress standards. Standing at almost seven foot, she towered over almost everyone there. She had long blonde hair, reaching half way down her back. She wasn't overly muscular, but had enough so that when combined with aura, she could easily break a boulder. All of this was hidden behind some suit pants, a yellow button down shirt with suspenders. She was the ultimate work mom, having had to have been after raising seven children.
"Oh I missed you so much! Come in, come in. Let me get your bags." She grabbed all their luggage, easily carrying them all with two hands. Coincidentally, she hadn't taken Jaune's bag. He sighed, the cat perched up on his shoulder. He grabbed his own luggage and followed the rest of them in.
"Oh Joan has told me sooo much about all of you! You're gonna love it here. This is the kitchen, we have it fully stocked with all sorts of machines, so go wild. This is the living room….." And like that, she gave them a full tour of the place. They even had a training room. They finally reached the bedrooms, where she gave them each a key to one room.
"Now make yourselves at home, I just have to discuss something with someone." She turned to look at Jaune, signalling for him to follow her. They entered a room that had to have been her office. Her desk was in the corner of her room, a bookshelf next to it. On the opposite side of the room layed a shelf filled with multiple awards.
She sat down in front of him, and stared right into his eyes.
He stared back, eyes of blue calmness masking a burning rebellion.
After a moment, she spoke. "I am going to be straight with you, I don't like you being here."
Almost instantly he gave a retort. "The feeling's mutual."
She chuckled. "You got some bite in ya, I like that." She leaned back on her chair. "Let's make a deal. You stay out of my way, I'll stay out of yours. But if anyone asks you, you're not affiliated with us. I couldn't give a rats ass what you do, just as long as you don't get me or anyone else here involved."
He gave it some thought, before replying. "One condition."
She raised an eyebrow, knowing that he wasn't exactly in the best position to be making demands. Still, she decided to humor him. "What is it?"
"The cat stays."
She blinked, then laughed. She stood up, and held out a hand. "It's a deal then."
He smiled, and shook her hand in agreement. "Pleasure doing business with you." The smile gained a mischievous feel to it. "I'll be sure to take full advantage of our little partnership."
"Don't get cheeky with me, brat." Under Normal circumstances, the line would have been seen as a small jab, a playful retort. But from her, it was anything but. It was clear to him what it was, a warning.
"Now scram, I have work to do."
By the time Jaune entered his new room, it was already pretty late. He noticed that the bed had an actual bed frame to keep the mattress up, a welcomed change. It was placed in the corner of the room, next to a small cabinet and a window. Opposite the bed layed a desk, and on the right of the door was another door, one he could only assume to be his bathroom. While it wasn't as big as the attic in LeBlanc, it was furnished nice. He would have to find a new place to workout then.
Morganna slipped off his shoulder and looked around. "So this is where we'll be stayin for the year." He jumped onto the bed, it being much comfier than the one at home. "I could get used to this." The cat almost melted into the bed.
Jaune laughed softly. "It is nice." He sat down next to Mona. "I would be lying if I said I didn't miss the city though."
The cat gave a knowing smile, or the closest thing a cat could do to it. "Is it the city you miss, or a certain doctor?"
Jaune turned away, his face red. "I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Sure, we'll go with that."
He huffed. His relationship with Tae was one of his worst kept secrets. Almost everyone he knew had figured out he was seeing someone. He was only happy they hadn't figured out who. As if in an act of retaliation, he yanked his towel from his bag and headed to the bathroom. "I am going to take a shower, and head to bed. What about you?"
Mona yawned before he responded. "I might just join you. It was a long trip"
He could say that again. It was a struggle dealing with the awkwardness between his new "sister" and him. He even pretended to sleep through the entire train ride. Though he might have actually dozed off a couple of times.
He came out of the shower refreshed and clean. He quickly dressed and slipped into bed, Mona found his place nestling next to his chest. Sleep overtook him, faster than it usually did. And for the first time in months, he dreamed of soft, blue velvet.
"Welcome back Trickster, to my Velvet Room." Jaune looked at the being he thought he had said goodbye to, Igors ever present smile still wide on his face. Lavenza stood next to him, her compendium in hand. The room largely stayed the same, except that all the cells were now wide open, signifying his heart's metaphorical prison break.
"While it's always nice to see you Igor, why am I here? I thought you said we wouldn't see each other after Yaldobath?"
"It is true that you prevented ruin from coming through to your world, your journey should have come to an end." He sighed, which surprised Jaune. He didn't seem like the type to do that. "Another threat looms over the world. One I fear you and your thieves won't be able to beat alone."
Jaune straightened up. "What do I need to do." He spoke in utmost seriousness.
"Find the Seeker of Truth and the Child of Death. If we hope to overcome this, one Wild Card won't be enough." Jaune's eyes widened. They needed three Wild Cards? What were they facing? "I've sent someone to help you in this endeavour. You should know them well."
Lavenza spoke up. "If you ever need to speak to us, simply use the key I gave you on any door. It should lead you back here. We wish you luck Trickster, it is time you woke up."
And with a flash of light, he was back.
He immediately stood up in the bed. Mona, frightened by the sudden movement, woke up instantly. "What the hell!? I was sleeping!"
Jaune turned to look at the feline. Morganna, noticing his serious expression, straightened up. "What's wrong?"
"God has cursed us for our hubris, and our work is never done."
The cat blinked. "What?"
"I'll explain once we're out of the house. First we get dressed." He didn't want anyone overhearing their conversation.
Thankfully, the kitchen was fitted out with the best tools and equipment anyone would ever need. Considering how early it was, he didn't expect anyone else to be up. "I might as well make everyone breakfast."
He quickly got to work, deciding to make the standard curry and coffee Sojiro made for him. He had given him a copy of the recipe he used, but he had modified it to fit his palette a small bit more. It still shocked him just how complex the making of curry could be, at least when you make it from scratch. However, it was nothing when compared to the making of coffee. While the kitchen did have a range of beans to choose from, it was nothing compared to the choices open to him in LeBlanc. While it wouldn't be good enough for Sojiro, he could pass by with it.
He filled each of the plates with a decent amount of curry and rice, and placed them all on the table inside the connecting room. He took out the bowl he had packed for Mona and served him some as well. While normally you weren't able to feed a cat such food, Mona was anything but normal.
They ate in a comfortable silence, Jaune still finishing his coffee by the time Joan and her team entered the room, clearly having just woken up. Their hair disheveled and yawning. He raised his mug. "Morning."
Joan stretched her arms behind her head. "Morning."
"I made breakfast, it's already plated."
Rin sniffed the air. "Is that…..curry? For breakfast?"
He gave a small smirk. "Trust me, you'll like it." He noticed Pyrrha staring at the cup in his hand. "Coffee's in the kitchen, there should still be some left."
Nora perked up hearing this. "Coffee?"
Rin sighed. "Nora, no."
A ringing echoed through the house. Then the sound of someone knocking on the door.
Jaune stood up. "I already ate, I'll get it. You all should eat up before it gets cold." He stopped for a moment. "Actually, could one of you wake up the other four?"
Nora shot up and rushed through the door, not before almost shouting "I'll do it!"
Jaune looked at Rin. "Is she always like this?"
"You get used to it."
As he walked to the front door, he began to think about what Igor said. About how he sent someone to help him. "Could this be it?" Mona trailed behind him.
He opened the door, and froze. He wore the same grey uniform, but without the school logo. The same black shoes and pants. His shoulder length brown hair was combed to perfection. A practiced smile was placed on his unblemished face. His eyes filled with a fake kindness, hiding a chaotic fire, a need to wreak havoc.
Goro Akechi. His rival, his friend, and his greatest regret stood in front of him and spoke. "Hello Jaune. Do you have a moment?"
Hoo boy. Let me tell ya, I have a newfound respect for authors who can write 6k chapters for their stories. That was rough.
Well, that's it! Tell me what you think. If it's bad, tell me so I don't embarrass myself by writing more.
Again, if you are interested, don't expect any sort of schedule. I'll try update when I can.
