PERCY
"Percy"
Percy eyes snapped open, his instincts shifting into battle mode. After his stay at the wolf house, sleeping had stopped coming naturally to him, but after the Collapse he was only ever half-asleep. His fingers curled around the familiar feel of Riptide in it's pen form. The room he was in was clearly once luxurious but was now in poor condition, with moth eaten curtains and dilapidated wallpaper. Percy put on a shirt and his breastplate, he fastened his tattered blue cape on which signaled his rank of High Imperator. He looked at himself in the once opulent mirror.
"Grover!" he called out as he put on his bracers and greaves.
"Whats up ?" replied the Satyr as he walked into the room through the adjoining bathroom, his breastplate battered and embroidered with scratches from countless battles.
"What's the status of the Northern Front?"
"6th is holding strong, but reports say a titan is holding the bridge." Grover replied wearily.
"Again." Percy's voice filled with irritation and frustration.
"Did Nico bring any reinforcements from Cleveland?"
"Depends on your definition of reinforcements. Their green recruits are barely out of basic with little to no combat experience. Also most of them are 15."
Percy swore and uncapped riptide and swung it enjoying the subtle swishing noises that it made while Grover listlessly recited the list of casualties, injuries and territories lost and gained.
'Fuck!" Percy cursed quietly "What's the status down south?" Percy was referring to the campaign that Frank and Nico were waging on the Patriot Alliance, a coalition of the remaining American States that survived The Collapse.
Grover in a more enthusiastic voice replied faster,
"It's going good, Frank says that they should take Dallas sometimes in the next two weeks, and they can finally take New Orleans."
"That's good. Maybe once their done, they can come here and we can move into Canada." replied Percy in a hopeful tone.
Nodding in agreement, Grover followed him out of the room and into brisk walk as he set off down the broad once grand hallway. At the apex they reached a set of heavy duty bronze doors. Two fully armored legionaries stood sentinel at each side. The pair saluted fist to heart and bowed their heads as Grover and Percy walked through.
The room beyond was once a meeting area, but it had been hastily converted into a command position covered by computer monitors and cables. In the middle of the haphazard room was a large map stretched over a table. A blonde man leaning on crutches was quietly studying it, ignoring the ruckus of the crowded room.
"Malcolm!" Malcolm turned and limped over, hastily saluting Percy and quickly bowing to Grover before looking back at Percy.
"Latest reports came in from Detroit, Perce." He handed Percy a sheaf of papers, which Percy accepted and then hurried off to a larger group poring over a large monitor.
After a few moments of reading, Percy silently handed the papers to Grover and called his aide over, a 14 year old son of Hermes and muttered something to him. The aide nodded and jogged away.
Grover finished reading and said "This is great news. We can finally get some real help."
Percy looked outside through the reinforced windows and didn't respond.
Grover looked at him strangely and looked out the window too.
In front of them, the city of Manhattan stretched like a once-proud Mausoleum, half of its once beautiful towering skyscrapers reduced to smoldering, smoking rubble- jagged tops of buildings reduced to vicious teeth. Even now enemy artillery erupted against the magical barriers inside the city; shaking buildings and rupturing poorly defended sectors. The skyline of the city had been destroyed, it's nerve center stripped. From their position of the empire state building, they had a clear view of the entire city and the areas beyond.
"We're stretched too thin," Percy said quietly "we could get reinforcements from Clarisse, but that would mean they would have to abandon Detroit."
"If Jason can ..."
"Caesar has a lot more to worry about than monster attacks G-man"
"It feels strange calling him that," Grover muttered, "Emperor Jason Grace. Caesar of the New Roman Empire"
"He's been Caesar for a long time Grover," Percy paused "for almost 6 years now."
Grover shifted his eyes to the abandoned streets below at the cohorts of Legio XI. Percy's personal legion, the 11th legion had been deployed with Praetor Clarisse La Rue's 10th legion and the 9th Legion under the command of Malcolm Pace. All three legions were under the command of High Imperator Perseus Jackson. The right hand of Caesar, commander of the Roman Legions, the Champion of the New Roman Empire.
"I still remember it ..."
"Remember what?" replied Grover in a confused tone.
"The time before this ..." Percy said in a sad tone "Before the Collapse, when everything was perfect. Now everything's gone to hell, and the world is fucked up."
"Don't dwell on it. You are the Summus Imperator You command the Legions of Rome, Perseus Jackson. Every loyal human being, demigod and servant of the Olympus will rally to your commands. If any two people can get us through this hell, it's you and Jason."
Percy turned back to the window, his sea-green eyes lifting to the churning, eternal storm that loomed over Manhattan. In the distance, lightning broiled in the depths awaiting the chance to strike. Even after years of war and hardship his eyes had always had an element of barely concealed mirth. But for the first time his eyes hardened. He put on his helmet and walked out of the room.
*Line Break*
HAZEL
"Frank, you there ?" The screen flickered to life as Percy's face appeared on the screen. Even after 7 years, Hazel never failed to appreciate how handsome Percy was. When they were teenagers, Percy was cute, but now he was handsome. His hair was shorter in a more disciplined military style, but still windswept to the side. He had grown taller and more muscular shedding the skateboarder vibe that once surrounded him and now looked like a supermodel/swimmer. She was shaken out of her musings by Percy who said "Hey Haze, how are you?" in a tired tone.
"I'm good Percy, how are you."
"You know how it is, taking things day by day." with a tired chuckle. Hazel looked at him with worry.
"Percy, I have some news." she said in a calm voice that failed to disguise her fear.
Percy looked at her and asked "What's wrong, are you okay? Is Jason being irritating, is Leo annoying you, I swear I'll kick his ass?" He rambled on further with the vigor of protective older brother until Hazel interrupted him.
"The Stoll's got back from their mission." The effect was instantaneous, his expression changed entirely from a tired sleepy man to someone that had drunk 4 cups of Leo's special coffee, which was really just coffee with Tequila. His eyes began to glow green with power and his posture became stiff and energized. He was silent for a few moments before asking a question in a frigidly cold tone.
"Did they find them?" Hazel flinched but didn't break eye contact. After all Jason had a similar reaction, when the Stoll's arrived.
"They delivered their report to Jason in private." She paused and continued "'Jason is convening the Imperial Council." The Imperial Council was composed of the remnants of the Seven, the praetors, Nico, Rachel, and even Octavian. They were the most powerful people in the empire.
"I can be in Neo Roma by the end of the week." Neo Roma formerly known as Olympia, Washington and was known as the capital of The New Roman Empire. It was a sprawling city built of white marble that stretched 100 miles in the shadow of Mount Olympus. It was a massive, bustling capital and hub of cultural enlightenment- it was the heart of Imperial society, and a monument to Humanity's perseverance.
"The council will meet in two weeks at Classe Praetoria." Classe Praetoria was the Imperial Navy's main headquarters and shipyards. Percy spent most of his time there when he wasn't deployed. It was located somewhere on one of the Hawaiian Islands. The news about going home seemed to cheer Percy up somewhat, as his expression visibly brightened and said,
"I'll see you in two weeks Haze." The screen blinked off and Hazel took a deep breath.
She looked out the window and looked out the window at the rapidly fading sunlight shining on the ocean. She left the laptop and walked out of her house.
