Kuroo bit his lower lip as he sat nervously on his bed. He ran his hands up and down his legs as his right leg bounced. Every so often he would run a hand through his already messy hair and glance up at the clock.

"It has only been twenty seconds since the last time you looked at it." Kenma said from the bed behind him. He was sitting cross legged with his game in his hands. He glanced up for a second time make sure Kuroo had heard him. "If you keep watching the clock, the time will go by slower."

"You'll understand next year." Kuroo said as he once again ran a nervous hand through his hair.

"Not really." Kenma said with a shrug. He realized why Kuroo was a nervous wreck. Every one was on their fifteenth birthday. On the exact moment a person was born, on their fifteenth birthday, a soul mark would appear some where on their body. A mark that matched that of another person. A soulmate. Some one that was a perfect match. Some times it was platonic, some times romantic. And on rare occurrences, some one could have more than one soulmate. Not much was known about multiple soulmates. The chance of a person meeting more than one was few and far between.

This whole soulmate thing had never set well with Kenma. He could never see another person matching well with himself. Something he had mentioned to Kuroo whenever the whole soulmate conversation got brought up.

"I'm sure you will change your tune next year." Kuroo said with a slight smirk on his face. He swiped the game out of Kenma's hand and held it out of the younger boys reach. Kenma crossed his arms and puffed out his cheeks.

"Why am I even here? Isn't this supposed to be a family thing? Why are you so persistent on this?" Kenma asked as he pouted and turned away from his best friend.

"You will know in about…" Kuroo glanced back up at the clock. "Ten seconds."

Kenma rolled his eyes bit waited silently for those ten seconds. Kuroo let out a slight wince and grabbed his lower hip. His eyes widened in a mix of emotions. Excitement. Horror. Pain. Possibly a bit of sadness. But as soon as the slight stinging pain was over Kuroo got to his feet and started to pull down his sweatpants.

"What the hell are you doing?" Kenma asked as his cheeks reddened and he looked away from the older boy.

Kuroo rolled his eyes as he pulled his boxers down just enough to see his new soul mark visible on his right hip. He raised an eyebrow in a bit of confusion. He had seen a few soul marks before. Most where a design meant to sympathize the soulmates. This one seemed to be a bit different. Four circles lined his hip. Three of them where just black outlines. But the second one was colored in with red.

"Wasn't expecting that. But it is still pretty cool, don't you think?" Kuroo asked. He glanced up at Kenma when he didn't received and answer and sighed. Kenma was blushing ear to ear and doing everything in his power to avoid looking at Kuroo. "Come on Kenma, tell me what you think of it.'

Kenma shook his head. "Why? A soul mark should be considered intimate."

Kuroo chuckled. "Just look at it and tell me what you think."

Kenma glanced over quickly and looked away again. "It's different. Can you put your pants back on. I shouldn't see it anyway."

"What! Of course you should see jt!" Kuroo said with a slight shake of his head. He walked over to the bed and stood right I'm front of Kenma. "How else are you going to recognize it next year."

Kenma's head shot up. The look of shock causing Kuroo to smile widely down at him. "You can't honestly believe we wouldn't have the same mark. Even after all these years of us being friends. The universe wouldn't be so cruel."

Kenma bit his lower lip and shook his head. "When has the universe been any thing less than cruel. Let's give every one a soul mark, but give them a forty percent chance of them actually finding their soulmate."

Kuroo sighed heavily and flopped down on the bed next to Kenma. "Stop being so negative. It's my birthday. I just got my soul mark, and I want to live in a world where my best friend is going to get the matching soul mark in a year, and we'll live happily ever after. Even if it is for a moment."

Kenma sighed. "Happily ever after are fairytales. There is no perfect ending because perfection is different for every individual."

Kuroo chuckled again and wrapped his

arms around Kenma. "Well as of right now, I believe in that fairytales, and you are ruining my good mood with negative jargon. Stop being a negative Nancy and for once, be happy about something."

Kenma huffed but nodded his head any way. "Happy birthday Kuroo."

"See, that's better." Kuroo said as he smiled widely and pulled Kenma into a tighter hug. He didn't care what Kenma thought. They were going to have the same mark.

"How is volleyball ball going?" Kuroo asked and he heard Kenma let out a small sigh. "Still struggling?"

Kenma shrugged. "I mean, it isn't horrible, but it isn't the same."

"Just don't give up ok." Kuroo said as he sat up on his elbow. "Then next year you'll be on the team with me again."

Kenma rolled over and looked up at Kuroo. His heart seemed to skip a beat, and he quickly pushed that feeling aside. "I made you a promise, didn't I?"

Kuroo smiled down at him. "That you did."

Kenma quickly sat back up and turned away so Kuroo wouldn't see the slight blush that crept across his cheeks. He grabbed his game and quickly hid his face behind it.

Kuroo chuckled and took the game back from him. "First. Have you finished your homework. Second. You can't always hide behind your game. And third. Ignoring me hurts my heart."

Kenma rolled his eyes and took his game back. "Yes, I finished it before you demanded I come over. I don't hide behind my game. And get over it. I have ignored you for years."

Kuroo grabbed his chest and fell back on his bed with an over dramatic gasp. "Kitten! You are breaking my heart! What kind of soulmate are you!"

Kenma glanced over at his friend with a raised eyebrow. "A non soulmate. And we aren't getting into this again."

"Oh yes we can! I'm not going to believe other wise till next year when you get yours." Kuroo demanded. Kenma hid a smirk behind his game. A trick he had mastered over the years. He could easily keep his eyes emotionless, but if his lips decided to give him away, he could easily hide it behind his game or phone. He couldn't lie to himself. He had developed a crush on Kuroo years ago. When his child good friend demanded he was his soulmate, his heart always skipped a beat. But he wouldn't allow himself to get his Hope's up. He was convinced that Kuroo believed it was platonic. He had always been into girls. They had never actually discussed their sexual preferences, but it was pretty obvious. At least it was for Kenma. He never talked about girls, while Kuroo seemed to talk about them a lot.

"Kenma? Are you tuning me out again?" Kuroo asked with a knowing smirk.

"Yes." Kenma replied.

"I just told you I have a training camp next weekend. I'll be gone." Kuroo said and this time Kenma looked up at him. They had always spent the weekends together. This year was different though. With Kuroo playing on the high school volleyball ball team, he had a lot more weekend training camps and practices.

"For the whole weekend?" Kenma asked as he slowly put his game down. Kuroo nodded. "Well, it cant be helped. Then next weekend you can tell me all about it."

Kuroo snickered. "Like I'll be able to wait an entire week. I'll be here the moment I get back Sunday night."

Kenma smiled slightly and picked up his game. He had a feeling this year was just going to get worse.

Kenma had been in a deep sleep. Dreaming about a world where soulmates where just a fairytale. There were no such things as soul marks. And being gay wasn't something frowned upon in society. Every one was just free to love who they wanted and Kuroo saw him as more than a friend. It was a dream he had more than he was willing to admit, and he was a bit annoyed when he was pulled out of the dream. Some thing was banging on his bedroom window.

Kenma groaned, knowing exactly who it was. There was only one person stupid enough to climb up to the second story, to get to his window. Even if he could have easily just walked in the front door any time he wanted to.

'I'm sleeping. It can wait." Kenma growled. The knocking came again. Annoyed, Kenma flung off the warm covers and walked across the room to his window. He opened the curtain to see Kuroo smiling back at him.

"You going to make us freeze out here Kitten?" Kuroo asked. Kenma glared at him.

'It's tempting. But you peeked my curiosity with the we bit." Kenma said as he unlocked his window. (If he left it unlocked, Kuroo would just come on in. Something that had happened wat to many times before Kenma finally learned his lesson.) He opened the window and went back to his bed.

Kuroo easily climbed in. The person with him, on the other hand, did not climb in the window gracefully. He tripped on the window ceil and then proceeded to knock over a stack of manga Kenma had piled on the floor.

Kuroo chuckled and quickly went to help them he then shushed him. "Bo, bro. Quiet or Kenma is going to end up kicking us out."

"Sorry bro." the boy said as he stood straight and placed his hands on his hips. He smiled at Kenma with big excited yellow eyes. His hair was almost as ridiculous as Kuroo's. Spiked and black and gray.

"Sorry that it is so late, but I promised I'd be over the moment I got home." Kuroo said as he sat down next to Kenma on his bed. "It just took a while to convince Bokuto's parents to let him come over on a school night."

Kenma raised an eyebrow at his best friend and Kuroo chuckled.

"Sorry. Bokuto, this is Kenma. My best friend I have been talking about.' Kuroo said. Kenma tried not to flinch at the fact that Kuroo had just called him best friend. Usually he was the future soulmate. "Kenma, this is Bokuto. We met at training camp. And check this out!"

Kuroo got to his feet and pulled down Bokuto's pants, just enough to show the soul mark on his right hip. Four circles. The last two where just an out line. While the first circle was colored in black. The second was colored in red. Kuroo then showed Kenma his mark. The first circle was now colored in black.

"You both are…" Kenma said as he tried to catch his breath. All those times Kuroo had demanded that Kenma was his soulmate. And here he was with his real soulmate. Standing in Kenma's bedroom, having no idea that Kenma's chest felt like it was collapsing into itself.

"Soulmates! Can you believe it!" Kuroo asked as he flung his arm around Bokuto's shoulders. Bokuto smiled proudly next to him. "So the moment we found out, I told him he had to come home and meet you!"

"This couldn't have waited!" Kenma growled, causing Kuroo to flinch a bit. After all these years of them being friends, Kuroo had never heard Kenma use that tone with him.

"Kenma…" Kuroo said as his smile slowly left his face as the realization finally set in. He glanced over at Bokuto, who looked very confused about what happened.

"Sorry, Kitten. I was just excited to tell you." Kuroo said as he reached out for Kenma, but the younger boy flinched away from him. "You were right. I should have waited for tomorrow."

He headed for the window and Kenma rolled his eyes. "Just use the front door. My parents arent home anyway."

Kuroo gulped as he took ahold of Bokuto's hand and led him out of Kenma's room. Kenma wasn't even sure if they were out of ear shot, before he let out a pained wail. He grabbed onto his chest, hoping that just holding it would ease the pain. But it only seemed to get worse. With each memory that he had shared with Kuroo came crashing down one him, and the sight of the matching soul Mark's, the pain only seemed to worsen. And the tears came faster. He had known it was a long shot that he would have the matching mark. But after hearing it for so many years, he had believed it. But now that was all taken from him by a handsome, athletically built boy with mesmerizing yellow eyes and a dazzling smile. Of course Kuroo's soulmate was just as good looking as him. Kenma felt like there was no way he could have even competed.

Bokuto flinched at the pained cry that came from the younger boys room. He froze for a second, before Kuroo lightly tugged on him to keep moving. Bokuto didn't want to. He wanted to go back and wrap the younger boy up in a hug. Such a pretty boy shouldn't be going through pain like that alone. His beautiful cat like eyes shouldn't be allowed to cry.

"Kuroo?" Bokuto asked the moment they got out of the house. "Maybe… maybe you should go back."

Kuroo shook his head. "I'll only make it worse. I used to tell him we'd have the same mark. I believed it. I just didn't think he believed it too."

Bokuto froze then glanced back at the house. "He shouldn't be left alone Kuroo."

Kuroo sighed and placed his hands on either side of Bokuto's face. He lightly placed his forehead against his soulmates and shook his head sadly. "Kenma doesn't have any other friends. He doesn't like to be around people that he doesn't know for long. It makes it hard for him to meet people. I should have thought about this before I just brought you over. I was just tok excited."

Bokuto nodded and glanced back at the house. "I'll be his friend too."

Kuroo chuckled. "I'd probably stay away for a while. Kitten has claws when provoked."

Bokuto smiled sadly. "No can do. I cant let him be depressed like that. And besides. I should probably tell you something about our soul Mark's. But it can wait till tomorrow. I'm not up for this soulmate talk anymore."

Kuroo nodded and led Bokuto to his house. Not knowing that Kenma had been listening from his still open window. Watching how intimate Kuroo seemed to be with Bokuto.

Kenma couldn't hold a grudge against Bokuto though. He hadn't chosen to have a matching mark with Kuroo. He hadn't stolen Kuroo from him. No Kuroo had never been Kenma's soulmate. He was nothing more than a close childhood friend. But that didn't mean that this hurt any less.
