Lily Luna

"We'd like you to meet our daughter," Ginny said, and she placed a small bundle, wrapped in white blankets, in Luna's arms.

The only girl of the three children Harry and Ginny had was also the only one to have inherited the infamous red hair all the Weasleys possessed.

The three adults — along with the new baby — sat in the Potters' living room; it was a small, quiet cottage on the outskirts of London. The perfect place to raise their growing family, Luna thought. They'd invited her over a week after their daughter's birth, professing that it was important to them that she was one of the first to meet their little girl.

Luna didn't know why, for they'd not been as eager to introduce her to their sons, but she was flattered by the gesture anyway.

Smiling, she looked down at the tiny girl in her arms. "She's beautiful," she said, and she meant it. The baby had the tiniest and sweetest button nose and her hands curled into fists as she slept peacefully, blissfully unaware of the attention she was receiving.

"Her name's Lily," Ginny said, and something in the way she said it told Luna that she was proud of this name.

"That's lovely," Luna said. "And, Harry, I'm sure your mum would be so proud of having her only granddaughter named after her."

Harry nodded, also looking happy. "We've actually named her Lily Luna," he said.

For a moment, Luna had no words. Little Lily squirmed in her arms, readjusting before settling back into sleep, her deep breathing the only sound in the room. Then, looking up at her friends and feeling a great rush of affection for both of them, she said, "That is very kind of you."

"We've named all of our children after people who have made significant impacts on our lives," Ginny said. "People who are important to us in some way. That is no exception for our daughter."

Luna smiled, unable to find the words that rightly expressed how she was feeling. Honoured, definitely. Flattered, overwhelmed. These were her friends; some of the only friends she had ever known, and she cared about them more than she thought they knew. These were the people who had helped her discover who she was, of what she could do; Ginny was the only person who ever stood up for her when everyone else laughed.

But sometimes she had wondered if her feelings were reciprocated.

Well, now she knew.

They had given their daughter her name.

"There's something else we'd like to ask of you," Ginny said after a while of no one speaking. "If you'd like, of course, we want you to be Lily's godmother."

"Her godmother?" Luna asked.

Harry and Ginny nodded, beaming.

"It would mean a lot to us if you could agree," Ginny said.

As of on cue, Lily's eyes fluttered open. They focused briefly on Luna, and for a moment Luna thought she might cry because it wasn't her mother holding her; but a moment later, she closed them again and was asleep once more.

"I would be honoured to be her godmother," Luna said. "Of course. But I thought you would ask Ron and Hermione, as they are your best friends."

"They are godparents to our sons, and they'll be naturally part of her life, always, by blood," Ginny said. "But we thought it fitting that you are part of Lily's life as well. We love you, Luna, and we want her to grow up feeling the same way."

Once again, a rush of affection washed over Luna. Love. That was what this world after Voldemort was all about. Love, happiness, joy. She had found it at Hogwarts with these people, and it had grown ever since. She saw them at least once a week. She'd been invited to Harry and Ginny's, Ron and Hermione's, Neville and Hannah's, weddings. And now, Ginny and Harry thought her worthy enough to name their precious daughter after her.

"Well, I accept," Luna said. "Of course I accept! I would love to be her godmother!"

Ginny beamed. She jumped to her feet and sat down beside Luna. Careful not to wake the sleeping baby, she placed an arm across Luna's shoulder in a tight grip. A tear trickled down her face. "Thank you, Luna," she said.

"Ginny, you shouldn't be the one crying," Luna said. "It should be me. You are my friends, and you have asked of me something I will cherish for the rest of my life."

Ginny smiled, wiping at her eyes. "Sorry. It's the whole 'I just had a baby' thing."

"She cried over soup the other day," Harry said, chuckling.

Luna laughed, and then remembering one of the reasons she'd come (apart from being asked) she nodded to the small gift she'd set on the table. "That is for Lily," she said. "I got it when I was last in Egypt. She might be too young for it now, but she'll grow into it."

"Thank you," Ginny said. "And I don't mean just for the gift. Would you like to stay for dinner?"

"I'd love to!" Luna said brightly. "I'm only back in the country for a few days."

"Where are you off to this time?" Ginny asked as she accepted her sleeping daughter back. "What adventure are you going on?"

"Oh, I'll be heading back to the Amazon," Luna said. "My dad thinks he's located a new and mysterious creature in the heart of the forest. It's as small as a dung beetle, but as vicious as a tiger. Seems a bit odd to me, but of course I'll go and investigate it."

"Sounds fascinating," Ginny said, and they headed for the kitchen. Luna knew Ginny didn't believe her, but it no longer bothered her that her friends didn't believe in the same things as she did. Exploring and travelling was all part of the fun of discovering creatures no one else thought were real. It never mattered if she and her dad ever actually found what they were looking for.

Ginny placed Lily in a small bassinet already in the kitchen. The girl remained sleeping still. She then Summoned three glasses and poured them each a drink. Butterbeer for Harry and Luna, and it looked like just Gillywater for Ginny.

Grinning, Ginny held up her glass and said, "To Luna. For being the best damned godmother ever in existence. Thank you."
