Hailey stared at the popcorn bag in the microwave as it slowly popped. She ran her hand through her damp hair and leaned against the counter, closing her eyes and tilting her head up to the ceiling.

There was a knock on her door and she sighed. She really wasn't in the attire for guests, but the chances that it was a drunk Vanessa who forgot her keys was pretty high.

She walked over to the front door and glanced through the peephole. Her eyes widened and she walked backwards, "Um, you okay?" she asked loudly.

"Yeah, are you?" Jay replied through the door.

"I…I'm not decent," Hailey leaned against the door.

"I just want to check in on you," Jay said, "You went through a lot in the last couple days."

Hailey glanced to the mirror and groaned at her appearance. Jay had seen her in her sweatpants and pajamas before, but after scrubbing herself raw and standing under a hot shower? No. He hasn't seen her like that.

"I have a key," Jay reminded her.

Hailey sighed, "Fine, fine," she opened the door and hid behind it, "Come in."

"What're you doing?" Jay asked as he stepped in.

Hailey hesitantly closed the door, "I don't look great right now."

Jay smiled, "You look fine."

Hailey rolled her eyes and led the way to the kitchen, "Says the man in a black button down looking like he was just drinking red wine and discussing his latest sports car."

"Will wanted to go to a restaurant bar," Jay explained with a laugh, "I needed to look nice."

"Mhmm," Hailey pulled the popcorn out of the microwave and opened the bag.

"You didn't want to go out?" Jay sat at the island.

Hailey shrugged and ate a handful of popcorn, "Wasn't really in the mood after seeing Amanda."

Jay nodded, "How was she?"

Hailey passed him the bag of popcorn, "She was okay. Her grandma was there so that was good. At least the disease didn't spread further and they could control it."

"Definitely," Jay ate a piece of popcorn.

"Let me see your arm," Hailey walked around the island, "Did you need stitches?"

Jay shook his head and rolled up his sleeve, "Will taped it."

"That's a lot of tape," Hailey gently held his arm and looked it over.

"Yeah, but it's fine. I didn't want stitches," Jay held a piece of popcorn in his fingers, "If you can catch this, you can choose the movie."

"Who said I wanted to watch a movie with you?" Hailey smirked.

"I did," Jay chuckled, "Now go long."

"How long?" Hailey laughed, but started walking backwards.

"Eh, that's fine," Jay smiled, "Ready?"

"Yes," Hailey nodded.

Jay tossed the popcorn at her and she managed to catch it, "Damn," he laughed, "All right, what're we watching?"

Hailey shrugged and swallowed the popcorn, "Something funny and not about being sick or skin falling off."

"Fair," Jay grabbed the bag of popcorn and followed her to the couch.

Hailey sat on the couch and pulled a blanket over her as she turned on Netflix.

"Are you going to share that?" Jay sat next to her.

Hailey looked him over, "Are you going to match my level of comfiness?"

Jay laughed, "This is really bothering you, isn't it?"

"Yes!" Hailey hit her hands to her legs, "You can't just show up looking all hot and I look like a piece of garbage."

Jay raised his eyebrows, "I look hot?"

Hailey's mouth instantly dried and her jaw dropped, "I…did not say that."

"I think you did," Jay chuckled.

Hailey blushed, "Jay."

"Hailey," Jay completely turned on the couch and crossed his legs underneath him.

"Don't do this," Hailey said.

"Don't do what?" Jay asked.

"You're being difficult," Hailey's voice slightly shook.

"I'd disagree," Jay scooted forward so their knees were touching through Hailey's blanket.

Hailey's eyes flickered down to their legs, "Jay."

"We've already established that's my name," Jay reached behind himself and grabbed the popcorn from the side table.

"You…are really pushing it," Hailey breathed.

Jay nodded and moved back so they weren't touching anymore, but maintained eye contact as he put a piece of popcorn in his mouth.

"You're drunk," Hailey said.

"Not really," Jay shrugged, "Just had two glasses of whiskey with Will and that was a bit ago."

Hailey licked her lips quickly and shook her head. She turned back to the TV and put on Dead to Me.

"This isn't a movie," Jay said.

"Shh," Hailey leaned against the arm of the couch and put her feet on Jay's leg, "I haven't watched this and I want to start. Kim said it's funny."

Jay looked down at her feet, "It has dead in the title."

Hailey glanced to him, "And?"

"And…fine, whatever, we'll watch it," Jay pulled at her blanket.

"Whoa, no," Hailey pulled the blanket back, "I'm practically naked here, you're wearing clothes."

"Oh come on Hailey," Jay laughed.

"I'm serious," she held back a smirk.

"Well," Jay stood and unbuttoned his shirt. He tossed the button down to the armchair and held his arms out to show off his black t-shirt, "Better?"

"Eh," Hailey shrugged and purposefully looked to his jeans.

"You're not serious," Jay crossed his arms, "Hailey."

"Jay," Hailey mocked.

"You're unbelievable," Jay breathed and moved to unbutton his pants.

"Wait," Hailey shot her hand out, "Never mind. Don't do it."

"I thought I needed to match your comfiness?" Jay asked.

"I didn't think you'd actually take your pants off," Hailey said, "We're not at that level yet."

Jay chuckled and slipped his belt off, "I seem to remember sleeping in your bed a couple years ago with no jeans on though."

"That was different," Hailey pointed out, "We were both drunk and I was in a lot of pain and it was a rough day."

Jay smiled remembering the night, "Technically, right now, I'm maybe a tiny drunk, I'm in pain, and we both had a rough day."

"You're in pain?" Hailey crossed her arms.

Jay held his arm out, "I had to cut myself today."

Hailey rolled her eyes, "You were just saying how Will fixed you up."

"It was still painful," Jay said.

Hailey sighed, "Do you have boxers on?"

"Yeah," Jay nodded.

Hailey bit her lip, knowing the second his jeans were off that she wouldn't be able to stop her heart from pounding out of her chest. She glanced down at her old t-shirt and the blanket she'd covered herself with. She had to admit, laying with Jay was always comfortable and it wasn't like their legs would be directly touching since she did have sweatpants on.

"Okay," she breathed, "I guess I did say you need to be comfortable."

Jay softened and sat on the coffee table, "I don't want you to be uncomfortable."

"I'm not," Hailey said, "I promise. I mostly don't want you uncomfortable."

"Me?" Jay raised his eyebrows.

"I know your legs are super white," Hailey smirked.

Jay laughed and stood, "Oh that's low," he undid his pants, "We can't all be Greek goddesses."

"I'm a Greek goddess?" Hailey gasped, "Jay Halstead, that's the sweetest thing you've ever said."

Jay rolled his eyes and slipped his shoes off before his jeans followed, "You know what I meant."

"That your Irish ass is jealous of my Greek one?" Hailey joked.

"You're so funny," Jay breathed and sat on the couch.

Hailey lifted the blanket, "Here."

"Thanks," Jay chuckled and put it over his legs.

"Welcome," Hailey smiled.

Jay looked at the TV, "You should probably restart the show."

"Oh, right," Hailey picked up the remote, "Sorry."

"Don't apologize," Jay said, "Why do girls apologize all the time?"

Hailey glanced to him, "I…don't know. Sorry."

Jay smirked, "Hailey."

She blushed, "Shut up."

"Mhmm," Jay leaned his head back on the couch. He grabbed the bag of popcorn and tore it open more before setting it between them on their legs.

Hailey restarted the show, "Thank you," she took a handful of popcorn.

Jay smiled at her, "No problem."

They fell into a silence as they watched TV. Before long, the popcorn was gone and Hailey set the empty bag on the coffee table. As the second episode started, Hailey found herself shifting so her feet were once again pressed against Jay's thighs under the blanket. She moved to rest her head on a pillow against the arm of the couch.

Jay's eyes flickered to her and bit his lip over a smile. He reached down under the blanket and picked her feet up to rest them on top of his legs.

"You sure?" Hailey asked softly, raising her head slightly.

"You have socks on," Jay shrugged.

Hailey just smiled and put her head back on the pillow.

Jay's hands ghosted over her feet and rested on her ankles. His thumb rubbing small circles on her bone.

She shivered at the feeling and tried harder to focus on the screen.

Jay took notice of the slight movement and smirked toward the TV.

By the third episode, Hailey's heart was pounding and she knew it wasn't completely because of the show. She couldn't even really focus on the show anymore. It was good and held her interest, but a certain detective's fingers on her calves distracted her just enough that she couldn't remember things that were said just seconds before.

On the other hand, Jay was lost in thought. He was slightly aware of what his hands were doing against Hailey's feet and legs, but it was more absentminded than anything. He liked joking around with her, but in the past couple months after she broke up with Adam, it just seemed to get more pointed and flirty. The idea of getting even more comfortable with her scared him just as much as it excited him and now that they weren't even partners anymore, he knew he'd have to go out of his way to spend extra alone time with her. He didn't mind in the least.

The front door was pushed open, "Hailey?" Vanessa called out.

Hailey sat up, "Hey! Did you drive home?"

Jay looked over in time for Kevin to poke his head in, "No, I had to drive her."

Hailey nodded and pushed the blanket off herself, "Thank you."

Kevin made eye contact with Jay and smirked, "Hey."

Jay held his hand up, "Have fun?"

"The best," Vanessa stumbled into the wall and slipped her shoes off, "It felt so good to blow off some steam."

"Whoa there," Kevin chuckled and grabbed her arm, "Need help getting up to bed?"

"Sure," Vanessa smiled.

Hailey and Jay watched the two of them walk up the stairs laughing quietly to each other at seemingly nothing.

"Um," Hailey paused the TV, "What…"

"I have no clue," Jay breathed.

The both waited a beat before looking at each other. Hailey blushed and looked down at the blanket, "Who are we to judge?"

Jay laughed softly, "I guess we are in a compromising position."

Hailey shook her head and smiled, "You're the one not wearing pants."

Jay lightly hit her with a pillow, "Because of you."

"Because of me?" Hailey laughed.

"Yes," Jay smirked, "You're the reason I'm practically naked."

"Those are my words!" Hailey sat up on her knees and hit Jay with her own pillow, "You're stealing from me."

"I can get away with it, I know a few lawyers and some good cops," Jay laughed.

"You don't say," Hailey smiled and lightly shoved his shoulder.

Jay chuckled and grabbed her wrist, "Watch it Upton."

"Really?" Hailey raised her eyebrows. She used her other hand to poke Jay in the stomach.

"Jerk," he laughed and pushed her backwards until she was laying on the couch.

Hailey looked up at him, "Are you ticklish?"

"Answering that would just be stupid," Jay said.

"But not answering it means I just have to figure it out for myself," Hailey lightly set her hand on Jay's side.

"Don't you dare," he jumped up.

Hailey laughed and sat up, "Come back."

"No," Jay laughed.

Hailey pouted, "Please."

"Nope," Jay grabbed the empty popcorn bag and walked to the kitchen to throw it out.

Hailey followed him, "Don't be difficult."

Jay chuckled and faced her, "What're you doing?"

"Just testing out a theory," Hailey smiled.

"Hailey," Jay grabbed her arms.

"Jay," Hailey whispered and stepped forward.

Jay looked down at her and breathed slowly. He bit his lip, "I could have lost you today."

"I could have lost you," Hailey said and lightly pushed her hands against his chest, "What were you thinking?"

"That I needed to do the right thing," Jay automatically answered, "I needed to say those people no matter what."

Hailey swallowed, "I was terrified you'd actually spray it on yourself."

"Hailey, I had to look at you through a bubble," Jay said, "That was scary."

"I know," Hailey breathed, "But I'm fine."

Jay dropped her arm and brushed his hand over her drying hair, "We both are."

Hailey nodded, "Don't you dare scare me like that again."

"No promises," Jay chuckled.

Hailey rolled her eyes, "Just try."

"I will," Jay stepped forward.

Hailey's eyes fluttered close and she took a deep breath, letting his smell overtake her.

Someone cleared their throat and Hailey and Jay shot apart from each other. They looked up to see Kevin leaning against the wall.

"Vanessa's up in bed," Kevin said and walked in the room, "She's probably going to have a hangover tomorrow, but she's fine."

Hailey nodded and ran a hand through her hair, "Okay, thank you."

Kevin looked between the two of them, "Everything good?"

"Uh, yeah," Jay stepped behind Hailey in an attempt to hide his boxers.

Kevin smirked, "Lose your pants?"

Jay rolled his eyes, "I needed to get comfortable. We were watching TV."

"Ah," Kevin nodded and glanced back at the living room, "Under a blanket in your underwear."

Hailey blushed, "It's just him. I'm fully clothed."

"You could say that," Kevin laughed softly, "Okay, well, I'll be going," he set Vanessa's keys on the counter, "See you."

"Bye," Jay said as Kevin walked out.

Hailey bit her lip, "Um…"

"I should go," Jay said softly.

Hailey looked back at him, "You can stay the night."

"I can't even justify it by saying I've been drinking," Jay chuckled.

"Then let's drink," Hailey quickly walked to the cupboard and grabbed a bottle of tequila.

"Hails," Jay put his hands on the counter.

"We both just admitted that we could have died," Hailey poured the tequila into two shot glasses, "So here's to being alive."

Jay smirked and took the glass from her, "Okay," he tapped it to hers, "To being alive."

They both tipped the drinks back into their mouths. Hailey shuddered, "Gosh."

"Do you have anything to follow that with?" Jay asked.

"Um," Hailey opened her fridge and pulled out cranberry juice, "It might be a little old, but it's fine."

"How old?" Jay laughed and took the container from her.

Hailey waved her hand, "Doesn't matter."

Jay raised his eyebrows and looked at it, "When'd you buy it?"

"I was still dating Adam," Hailey grabbed it back, "Don't think too much into it," she uncapped it and poured some into her shot glass, quickly drinking it.

Jay chuckled, "Someone got sick, huh?"

Hailey rolled her eyes, "Don't."

"Forgot the general rules of sex ed?" Jay teased.

Hailey slid the container to him, "It was painful and this was the third container I bought before it finally went away."

"Always sounds awful," Jay drank the juice straight from the container, "I'm glad I'm not a girl."

Hailey poured more tequila into their glasses, "It is."

"How many have you had?" Jay laughed.

"You really are pushing it," Hailey said.

Jay smirked and held up his glass, "To surviving UTIs."

Hailey gasped, "Jay!"

Jay laughed and drank the alcohol before grabbing the cranberry juice again.

"You suck," Hailey whispered and tipped hers back into her mouth. She ignored the cranberry juice Jay was offering her and went straight for the tequila bottle.

"Go big or go home," Jay chuckled.

Hailey nodded as she swallowed her third shot, "You caused this."

Jay laughed, "You brought it up."

"Whatever," Hailey smirked and drank the cranberry juice.

Jay took the bottle and walked back to the couch, "Are we going to keep watching?"

"I'll be honest and say I really wasn't paying much attention at the end there," Hailey smiled as she followed him.

"Fair," Jay sat down and grabbed the remote.

Hailey plopped down next to him and tossed the blanket over their legs, "Turn it off."

"You sure?" Jay drank from the tequila bottle.

"Yeah," Hailey grabbed the remote from him and turned cable back on, "We clearly can't watch something new," she searched the TV guide until finding the Friends reruns, "There we go."

Jay held the bottle out to her, "I'm more of a fan of The Office."

"Well, that's not on," Hailey tipped the tequila into her mouth, "So this is what we're watching."

"Fine," Jay drank from the container of cranberry juice.

Hailey watched him from the corner of her eye. She smiled and took another small sip of alcohol.

"What?" Jay asked, swapping bottles with her.

"I'm glad I convinced you to stay," Hailey shrugged.

"It didn't take much," Jay chuckled and drank the tequila.

"You do love free alcohol," Hailey laughed.

"Very true," Jay smirked against the bottle.

Hailey lightly touched the tape on his arm, "Need anything for this?"

Jay looked at it, "No, I'm okay."

Hailey nodded, "It's going to scar."

"That's fine," Jay shrugged.

Hailey leaned back against the couch, "You have a lot."

"Of?" Jay raised his eyebrows.

"Scars," Hailey said.

"Eh," Jay looked over himself, "I guess."

Hailey boldly reached out without thinking and set her hand on the side of his stomach, "Right here."

Jay's eyes landed on her hand, "Yeah, I do have one there."

"About that," Hailey's voice softened, "How are you?"

Jay looked up at her, "It doesn't hurt anymore, it's been over a year."

"I don't mean the physical wound, Jay," Hailey whispered.

"Oh," Jay nodded, "I…I'm fine."

Hailey watched his face, her hand still held lightly against his shirt, "You know you can tell me-"

"Yeah, I know," Jay said, "I just don't want to talk about it, okay? Not tonight."

Hailey nodded, "That's fine."

Jay set his hand on hers, "Thank you for asking, though."

"Of course," Hailey softly rubbed his thumb over her shirt.

Jay smiled at her and slid his hand up her arm till his fingers wrapped around her elbow, "And thanks for letting me stay the night."

"Anytime," she whispered.

Jay glanced to the clock on the wall, "As much as I love spending time with you…it's getting late and we need to be back at work soon."

"Yeah," Hailey reluctantly pulled back.

Jay let go of her arm and his hand dropped to his lap.

Hailey stood, grabbing the tequila and cranberry juice; she walked back to the kitchen and put everything away.

Jay messed with the pillows and laid on the couch.

"You're sleeping in here?" Hailey stood at the edge of the living room.

"Yeah," Jay said, propping himself up.

Hailey raised her eyebrows, "You know you're more than welcome to sleep in my bed."

"Hails, I'm okay," Jay smiled slightly.

Hailey walked over and put the blanket on him, "At least use a blanket like a human."

"Are you suggesting I'm an animal?" Jay smirked.

"Never," Hailey laughed, "Goodnight, Jay."

"Night, Hailey," he replied.

She smiled and walked up to her room. She laid face down on the bed and groaned. She wasn't used to these new games they decided to play and it was really messing with her head and heart.

Hailey woke to her alarm and blinked against the slight headache before remembering the night before. She sat up and rubbed her face yawning.

She quickly got dressed, thinking she'd make Jay breakfast then drive with him to his apartment and wait while he got ready so they could go to work together. After brushing her hair and putting foundation and blush on, she walked downstairs expecting to see Jay still asleep on the couch, but she was wrong.

The couch was empty and he was nowhere to be seen on the entire ground floor. Instead, Vanessa was sitting at the kitchen island nursing a hot cup of coffee in front of her.

"Morning," Hailey said softly and opened the cupboard to grab out cereal.

"Hey," Vanessa smiled and slid a piece of paper across the island.

"What's that?" Hailey asked as she set a bowl on the counter.

"A love note," Vanessa teased.

Hailey rolled her eyes and looked at the paper.

-Hails, thanks for drinks. See you at work. Coffee on me. Jay-

Hailey smiled and set the note in the drawer before pouring the cereal into her bowl.

"So?" Vanessa asked.

"Hmm?" Hailey bit her lip.

"Is he your boyfriend?" Vanessa dragged the final word out slowly.

Hailey blushed, "Stop."

"Okay, okay," Vanessa laughed.

"You're the one talking," Hailey grabbed the milk from the fridge, "Do you remember Kevin helping you into bed last night?"

"It was all innocent," Vanessa waved her hand.

"Uh-huh," Hailey smirked.

"We could agree to not talk about either man?" Vanessa suggested.

Hailey hummed softly before nodding, "Deal."

They were silent for a moment until Vanessa whispered, "But gosh they are very attractive."

Hailey glanced up at her and debated her words briefly before admitting, "Yes they are."

Vanessa smirked around her coffee mug and winked at Hailey.

Hailey blushed and shook her head, knowing she walked right into that one.
