Alone {{Prologue}}
He sat in the swing of the orphanage idly, nudging himself to and fro with a foot. No one else was here; they'd all gotten adopted.
Except him, of course.
It didn't matter to him that much anymore, or at least that's what he told himself. It didn't really matter; he was used to being alone anyways.
He'd been alone for so long he didn't know anything else.
Alone. Always.
The other children that came through always had sad stories of the war. Their parents had been killed horribley somehow, in front of them, and now they were here.
All emptiness and wide eyes, claiming trauma.
He supposed he would've missed his parents, had he known them in the first place.
Hard to mourn the loss of something never known.
He didn't even know what had happened to them. Were they dead? Prisoners of war? Had they just decided like everyone else that he was a waste of time and left him?
It was what he did when he needed entertainment. He'd think up wild stories of why he didn't have parents. They were held captive by savage enemies in a far off land; a jungle, or desert maybe. They had given their lives bravely to protect the lives of others.
Or, they had just left him alone like the rest.
Left behind.
A breeze blew through the orphanage yard, kicking up dust and leaves, ruffling his hair. he envied it.
The wind was powerful, beautiful, free. If it was lonely in one place, it could simply pick up and blow it's merry way to a place where friends resided.
So unlike him.
But then again, even if he could leave, where would he go? There was no place for a lone boy anywhere. It was obvious by the fact that everyone was always adopted, except him.
He wasn't wanted, needed, by anybody. They didn't care.
That was fine with him. He could live without them. Even if it meant staying in this sad place forever.
Unwanted.
He could ignore the hateful stares of the adults, the whispers, the dislike. He could understand why no one adopted him. They all hated him, even if he didn't know why.
But that didn't explain why they wouldn't let the local children near him, let them acknowledge him, let him not be alone for once.
And that hurt.
The boy continued to idly move himself with one foot, staring listlessly into the sky, not bothered by the thoughts flowing through his mind.
He'd been alone for so long he didn't know anything else.
