Duo walked into the house, shutting the door behind him and shrugging off his coat. Looking around in curiosity, he took a few steps forward. A few seconds later, he felt a pair of arms throw themselves around his neck as a body pressed itself against his back and he fell face first, flat onto the floor.
He smiled into the carpet. "Hey Hilde."
Hilde giggled and snuggled against his back. "Hi sweetie!!" She said, grinning in triumph for catching the gundam pilot by surprise. Duo smiled and stood up, padding to the couch Hilde and all. He sat on the couch and pulled her onto his lap and hugged her close.
"Ya know babe, I can't remember a time when I've ever been this happy. Just being here with you, it always does this to me." He said, smiling.
Hilde snuggled closer to him. "I don't know where I'd be without you Duo." She closed her eyes as her mind drifted to over a year ago.
~Flashback~
"YOU LITTLE WITCH!!" Screamed her step-mother, throwing Hilde to the ground outside their large house. "Ever since your father died, I've needed a good excuse to throw you out, and now I have it! HAIL OZ!" She cried, slamming the door and leaving Hilde, still in her Oz uniform, laying in the snow.
She had lived on the streets for a few months, becoming more ragged every day. One day, a man had followed her into "her home" which was actually an alley, and had pinned her to the wall. "Hi there little missy, what's a pretty girl like you doin' in these cold, lonely streets all alone? Give daddy a kiss." The mans putrid, alcohol filled breath filled her lungs as the man leaned closer to her. She screamed and pushed at him, trying to get him away. The man just slapped her. "Ey' now, that's no way to treat your man. Now, I said give daddy a kiss!!!" He leaned forward again, and Hilde closed her eyes.
She heard a sickening crack and opened her eyes to see the man laying a few feet away, bloody. She looked around and saw Duo holding a broken bat in his hands. He smiled at her and pulled her close.
"Long time no see babe. Told you I'd come back for you. Sorry it took so long though." He hugged her tight and added, "How about I make it up to you eh? You can come live at my house."
~End flashback~
Duo looked down at her sleeping form, smiled, and kissed her cheek.
"Your the only person I know that can fall asleep smiling. G'night babe." He whispered, resting his head on her shoulder and falling into a soothing sleep.
