"Can I help you, sir?"

He was the type of man who looked like he'd rather be in front of a firing squad than a florist. Under jeans and a white t-shirt he wore military boots that tapped on her polished floor, and an expression of hesitant dismay.

"I'm looking for roses." Of this much he was sure. "For a gift."

"Certainly. Something romantic? We have some lovely long-stemmed reds here..." She gestured at the cooler adjacent to the wall.

"Romantic, yes. But not red," he decided. She disliked that color--he didn't know why. "No pink, either."

The woman's customer-friendly smile never faltered. "Perhaps yellow? Yellow roses are a symbol of friendship. We also have white, for purity."

"Friendship...no, yellow isn't quite right." He considered. Neither the colors nor the ideas were what he needed. "Maybe white, if it's all you have. It doesn't really say what I want to say, though; haven't you got anything else?"

She eyed the tall man, smile dimming slightly. If symbolism was what was making his decision, what sort of message was he trying to send to this girl? "We do have some blue roses...blue, however, symbolizes the impossible--the unattainable. Not really suitable for a romantic gift."

Raven bangs fell over his dark eyes as he thought out loud. "Riza does like blue."

"They're pretty, but if she knows what they signify--"

"--The impossible. She'll love them."

He brought her the blue roses. She knew, and she laughed, and she kissed him in secret.
