LULLABY
Hush, little baby, don't say a word
Papa's gonna buy you a mockingbird
Riku sat staring at the door. He was watching, waiting, for someone to open that door. The darkness swirled around him. Inviting him to join the endless void behind him. Only, by giving in it meant forgetting.
And if that mockingbird won't sing,
Papa's gonna buy you a diamond ring
Slowly, Riku was already giving into the void. He thought it was nearly impossible for anyone to find him within Kingdom Hearts. The people who knew he was here were being erased as he sat there. Memories were brought up in his mind's eye. Each on was torn and missing pieces, usually the most important part of the memory.
And if that diamond ring turns brass,
Papa's gonna buy you a looking glass
All that was left of his mother was her voice, singing him to sleep. This lullaby drifted through him. It made him painfully aware that he couldn't remember her smile or her eyes. Riku recalled the island. Although he couldn't remember it's name and parts of it were overshadowed by the darkness of heart. A girl was jumping rope her face a blur.
And if that looking glass gets broke,
Papa's gonna buy you a billy goat
Past the girl's feet rolled a blitz ball followed by two teenagers. One had shocking hair and an accented "ya?" The other had a bright smile and a wooden sword. The ball rolled to a stop in front of a raft.
And if that billy goat won't pull,
Papa's gonna buy you a cart and bull
On the raft stood an auburn haired girl. She was waving at him but her smile greeted the person behind him. It was memories like this that made Riku want t o enter the void. He knew that by tomorrow that the girl's smile and the blitz ball would be gone. Only one person wasn't being destroyed by the darkness, maybe because he shined too bright.
And if that cart and bull fall down,
You'll still be the sweetest baby in town
The darkness shifted around Riku, as if it was unsettled. Images of Sora filled his mind, his vision, his heart. Sora stood in Traverse Town, Keyblade nestled at he shoulder, smiling at his new friends. Building the raft, exploring the cave making sand castles , and the final fight. Everything about Sora he remembered. The edges of these memories were slightly frayed. But who needed the edges when you had the whole picture? The darkness wanted Sora gone. He was the only thing that tied Riku to the light at this point. Every second though, he grew tired of fighting, tired of living. Maybe a short nap wouldn't hurt.
Riku snapped his eyes open. He glanced around, nothing had changed. What had woken him up then? There was a clang then some scratching. How could a Heartless get through the door, when it was locked tight? The sound grew closer as the Heartless slithered up behind him. Riku knew he had to turn around to fight. Only, he didn't know if he could face the void without losing Sora. The scratching sound came louder this time.
"Hush, little baby, don't say a word. Or the darkness' gonna take Sora away," Riku sang a verse from his own broken lullaby.
Riku's voice was lost within the void. He glanced behind him meeting yellow eyes. From the 'floor' raised a clawed hand reaching out to him. Any disruption and Sora would be lost to him. Riku watched as the hand inched closer. This Heartless didn't want Sora, it only wanted his heart.
Author's Note: I'm sorry for making this so depressing. I love Riku, really. I don't mean to make the poor boy suffer. What happens next is really anyone's guess since this is a one-shot. Thanks for reading and I really hope you review/since this is my first Kingdom Hearts fic I'm hoping to see what you thought of it.
