Carefree Dance

By MadCapSciFiWriter

Teyla stood in the gym located in one of the lower levels of Atlantis. Devoid of any equipment and persons, she slowly raised her arms out to her side. She stood still for a moment longer as she began to hum an Athosian song under her breath. Slowly, as she continued to hum the tune, she began to move; slow, elegant moves that moved her in a circular motion around the empty room. The tune she hummed picked up in pace and she easily fit her movements to the rhythm of the song. Her lose fitting garments, unlike those she used for sparring, flowed gracefully around her as she twirled, dipped and spun to her own fantasy dance.

Lost in the moment Teyla allowed herself to smile, not a slight uplifting of the corners of her mouth, but a full wide, smile that conveyed her delight in the dance of her people. After a time, the tune faded as Teyla slowly finished her dance with a slight bow. A smile still lit her features but only for a moment before once again her face took on its usual serene mask.

She allowed no one to see this side of her. She held onto this part of herself with a fierce possession unwilling to let it go. The dance and the song were the few things she remembered from a mother she lost so long ago and when she danced…she relived a moment in time…one where she was free from responsibility and the heavy weight of leading her people. When she danced she was merely Teyla.

But the dance does not last forever and the notes of an Athosian song fade away leaving nothing behind but the leader. . .

Teyla sighed to herself as she picked up her cloth bag and headed for the door. With one wistful glance back to the empty room, Teyla squared her shoulders and walked out the door to face Atlantis, not as the women reveling in the joys of a carefree dance but instead as the leader of the Athosian people, ready to face whatever came toward her.
