I don't really know what to call this - it's just sort of an experimental kinda-poetic prose. But I liked it, so I thought I would post it. Let me know what you think.

He walks on the tide line, where sea licks the land
And he sings at the waves,
songs of courage and splendor,
And there is nothing under his feet
but sand.

The sea, it once called him.
"I conquer all things,
Both farmland and bedrock.
Come swim in my waters,
The waves they will rock you,
And you will belong to
Ancient power
Ancient music
Ancient dance."

So he jumped in the ocean
But the ocean was cold.
And it wouldn't let go
As the undertow grabbed him
And he clawed at the sand
As the undertow grabbed him.

And the old man, he came and he held out his hand
And the old man, he sang him a song
That wrapped him in silver threads
Like a cocoon.
As the old man, he said
"Come with me."

And they went to a cabin
With brightly lit windows
And the people inside
Were laughing and singing
With joy on their faces
And joy in their voices
With good pints of ale
And a fire in the hearth.

"May I go inside?" he asked the old man.
And the old man looked sad
And replied,
"You may if you wish
And they will let you in.
But you'll never belong.
And they'll never accept you -
A creature that still smells of sea."

"But join me, for we are alike, you and I.
I sing back the ocean, I sing back the tide
To keep safe the warmth
And the light
And the joy.
For this is an island.
Unless I stand guard
The waves they will conquer
The ocean will roar
And the sea will eventually win."

So they walked with each other
And sang back the sea.
And though they were lonely
They were lonely together,
And sometimes their feet
Would leave marks in the sand
With rhythm and patterns
That looked much like a dance.

And now he is gone,
The old man, his companion
And he's left with one foot
In the sea, one on land.

And he takes a good look.
And the ocean is vast,
And the waves they are huge,
and he takes a deep breath
and screams into the wind.

He walks on the tide line, where sea licks the land.
And he sings at the waves,
songs of courage and splendor,
And there is nothing under his feet but sand.
