October 31, 1981
And he's saying goodbye
Not knowing that this is the last time
He'll ever see him
He stands in the doorway
Silhouetted by the streetlight
Goodbye and good luck
And I'll see you real soon
Take care of yourself
Watch out for Lily and Harry
Make sure to kiss them good night
Take care of your own
It's a scary world out there
Look out for them
And tell her I said
Goodbye and good luck
And I'll see her real soon
He pauses in the doorway
As if somehow he knows
That this is the last time
They will ever say goodbye
That, in a few hours
There will be no house
No door to knock on
Goodbye and good luck
And I'll see you real soon
He's leaving now
Delayed in the doorway
Much too long already
But he turns back
For some reason
And he gets one last glimpse
Of that black hair
That always sticks up in back
And the hazel eyes
Behind those heavy-framed glasses
Goodbye and good luck
And I'll see you real soon
He starts his bike
And flies away
And though it's a normal errand
He feels fear deep inside
As though something's coming
And he glances back at the house
One last time
Seen from above
It's the very picture of homeliness
A breath of peace
And he knows his godson
Will have the loving home
He was denied
Goodbye and good luck, he whispers
And I'll see you real soon
He's going back to the house
Barely gone three hours
But something feels wrong
And there's a column of smoke
Coming up on the horizon
The shock knocks him back
There is no house there
No little family
Awaiting his return
Even this has been shattered
By the evil that comes
He bows his head
Goodbye and good luck
And I'll see you real soon, he mourns
He crashes in front of the rubble
There are the bodies out front
Looking so peaceful
His world falling in
As he stands over them
And looks at his comrade
His friend, his brother
They were there for each other
When there was no one else
They thought the same thoughts
And even looked something alike
And now he's gone
Leaving his other half
Empty inside
Goodbye and good luck
And I'll see you real soon
As he stands there
Is that a cry of hope behind him?
And there's a figure
Coming toward him
Holding a baby
The most terrible wizard
In the entire world
Was no match
For the power of love
He wants to take Harry
But the powers that be say no
And so he kisses his godson
On the cut on his forehead
And he goes padding away
With a little blood
Still on his lips
Thinking to Harry
Praying to James
Goodbye and good luck
And I'll see you real soon
Goodbye and good luck
And I'll see you
Real real soon
