Isn't life ironic?
Barely 24 hours after she moves on, he breaks things off.
So she has a boyfriend.
But he doesn't have a wife.
He's finally available.
But she isn't.
…
Finn likes her.
And she likes him.
Too bad she loves Derek.
But Finn's safe.
He's not married.
No skeletons in his closet.
He won't hurt her.
So she clings to him.
Deep down, she knows it won't last.
Maybe he does, too.
…
Friday is Movie Night.
He comes over, and they alternate who gets to choose.
His movies have lots of explosions and sex.
She rolls her eyes, but secretly thinks they're kind of cool.
Secretly.
She always chooses chick flicks.
He makes fun of her for crying, but sometimes he tears up too.
Sometimes.
…
They're getting to that point.
The part where you're supposed to be committed to each other.
It's been six months.
They're both starting to realize.
This can't go on forever.
…
She ignores Derek.
Once, they were friends.
But now, it just seems awkward.
To play at friendship when they both want something more.
She's too scared of that something.
So she stays away.
Her boyfriend is really just her armor.
Her excuse.
To keep her from danger.
…
At eight months, it's falling apart.
They can't play this game much longer.
She doesn't want to commit.
He knows she doesn't.
But he likes her.
Doesn't really want to lose her.
So he says nothing.
…
At nine months, he's had enough.
He tells her that they should just be friends.
She's halfway between relieved and panicked.
Relieved that she didn't have to break it off.
Panicked because she's lost her excuse.
She's a wide open target now.
…
That night, she doesn't sleep.
She can't.
There's too much going through her head.
She wants Derek.
She knows he wants her, too.
But she's afraid.
Afraid of getting hurt.
Afraid of losing him again.
It's a gamble.
Risk it all and end up happy?
Or play it safe and end up alone?
You'd think it would be so easy.
But she's so scared of risks.
She's learned the hard way the anguish they can cause.
She makes a decision.
…
The next day, Derek smiles at her in the elevator.
He does this every day.
Every day she ignores him.
But today; today is different.
Today, she smiles back.
A/N: I would continue this, but it'd have to be fluff, and fluff isn't really my strong suit. Please tell me what you think, thanks!
