Roger couldn't remember the last time he'd slept through the night.

He was scared that the moment he wasn't watching Mimi she'd slip away. While rehab had bought her a bit of time, she was still in pretty bad condition. Everyone knew her time was limited, and while most tried to ignore it and go on with their lives as usual (which had been what Mimi wanted them to do), Roger found that that impossible.

Watching Mimi sleep never got boring to Roger. Some nights she'd sleep peacefully, barely turning or making any noises all night. It was those nights he used to just stare at her, admiring every feature of her body. He'd always thought she was beautiful, but he found he appreciated it even more while she was asleep. He'd think about the way her eyes lit up whenever he walked into the room, the way her lips felt against his, and the way her hair felt when he ran his hands through it. Roger believed he'd found in angel in her, and couldn't believe he'd gotten so lucky.

Then there were the nights Mimi would talk in her sleep. Sometimes, he could tell she was talking to Angel in her dream. Other times the whole group of friends was there, and they were just laughing, having fun, and being stupid. And, sometimes he could tell it was just the two of them in her dream, which was his personal favourite to listen to. Every now and then he swore he could hear her faintly humming "Your Eyes."

Though, watching Mimi sleep didn't always make Roger happy. When she was sleeping, she was unaware that the bruises she tried to hide from Roger were showing. Roger was pretty sure she'd gotten them from some of the pole dancing at the Cat Scratch club. He'd seen her dance before, and he knew that she always gave it everything she had, even if sometimes it left a mark.

The worst nights were one she had nightmares. She'd constantly move, making noises that were incoherent, but sounded painful. Roger hated thinking about what she was dreaming about, and his biggest fear was that he was featured in one her nightmares as anything but the hero that came to save her from the hell she was experiencing.

Tonight she was having a nightmare. Roger cringed as he watched and listened to her.

"Don't...don't leave...Roger you can't...please...I need you..."

Roger's eyes widened and he gently shook her awake. He wasn't worried about what Mimi would think when she realized he'd been awake, he was fairly sure she knew about his insomnia, seeing as how he was always right there when she woke up. "Mimi, I'm right here," he whispered as her eyes slowly opened.

"You're here," she whispered, beginning to realize that what she had just seen hadn't been reality. "It was just a dream."

"And I'll always be here," Roger said, kissing her forehead.

"Promise?"

"Promise."

Mimi smiled at him, and then yawned. "Hey Roger?"

"Yeah?"

"Get some sleep. I'll be fine."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

Roger smiled and kissed her. "I'll try. Goodnight, Mimi."

"Goodnight."

Roger changed his position from sitting up beside Mimi to lying down, and closed his eyes. He slowly drifted off to sleep, where he dreamt of Mimi's sleeping body.
