CH. 13- Breakthrough

She lunged at the beast and let out a snarling hiss as she sank her claws into his chest, making him howl out painfully and stumble back from the force of the hit. Midna felt the flesh split apart as she raked her claws fiercely over his front, making her stomach turn. There was no time to grieve as the wolf beast retaliated, knocking Midna back with a powerful swipe of his arm. She was thrown backwards but she twisted in mid-air and regained her footing. Getting back into her defensive stance Midna brought up her hand and unleashed a burst of her energy through her hand. Link evaded the searing attack, diving to the side as it blasted into the stone wall behind him.

Snarling with peeled back chops Link leapt at her, bringing his claws down over one of her arms and tearing the flesh asunder, rendering the appendage useless. Midna let out a pained cry and kicked away from the beast, the stricken arm dangling uselessly at her side.

'Damn!', she cursed inwardly.

She felt the blood running down her arm and knew her time was now cut severely in half. With this wound, Midna would lose consciousness if she moved too much.

Wait, what time?

Midna never HAD time!

She ducked as a furred fist came at her head and moved around to the side, putting some distance between them. How long had they been at this? What day was it? Was it morning? Night time? Was Shun still imprisoned?

Shun!

Hyrule!

The Twilight realm!

There really was no time. No time at all! In her frantic attempt to reach her hero of light Midna had all but abandoned their original objective to keep their worlds out of harm's way!

Bringing her mind back to the battle, Midna charged at the best again. Narrowly avoiding his claws, she pounded an energy-filled strike to his muzzle. The one strike turned into another, and then another until it was a frenzied barrage of blue fire punches, screaming desperately with each strike and hoping she was close to bringing Link back to his senses.

Midna let out a primal shriek as she brought down a double fisted blow over his head, the blazing blue energy sparking wildly and singed his fur. Link let out a groaning whine and fell hard upon his knees, bloodied, dirtied and burned.

Midna stood ready once again, daring the creature before her to move. She was breathing heavily from her earlier attack but was filled with a renewed source of energy and drew her resolve from it. The beast let out another tired groan and began to teeter to one side. Seeing the half lidded blue eyes of the beast Midna knew she had FINALLY prevailed, even after seeing the creature land unceremoniously onto the floor with a crude grunt that followed.

She relaxed her tense posture and approached the beast as it remained lying face down on the ground. Her appendages receded back into her body and her eyes returned to their neutral state. She approached and knelt beside him then, reaching a tentative hand to put out a slightly smoking tuft of fur.

As her fingers came into contact the fur began to slowly recede just as her limbs had done, revealing human colored skin beneath. Midna let out a happy sob that came forth from her throat before she could stifle it and fell upon Links form, clutching his head in her hands and holding him dearly as she quietly wept in relief.

Link groaned and stirred lightly in her arms, the fur of his beast nearly gone from his features. Though he was too weak to move his head Link immediately recognized the warmth and touch of the being cradling him now.

"M-…. Mid…na…."

Once again the princess let out a barely contained sob and kissed his temple.

"Yes, I'm- I'm right here, Link!"

She watched as Link opened his eyes and was delighted to see them back to their original colors. He breathed deeply the familiar scent that belonged to Midna and felt the many aches and pains ease somewhat.

"I feel…like a herd of goats ran over me….. For a hundred days straight." He breathed out the words in tired groans.

Midna found it in her to let out a chuckle of her own and proceeded to fill him in on the current situation, and everything that has lead up to it; from Hex's I attempt to intervene to now. He groaned shamefully and buried his face further into Midna's lap. Nothing was said after that. They sat in contemplative silence, trying to weigh their options and how to proceed. As it is Link is useless in his current.

"That's quite an understatement."

"Bet I also look how I sound, eh?"

"At least you're no longer lost, and you are found."

The silence was more comfortable after words were said, fruitless as they were. Their worlds were coming to their ends and all they could do now was make small talk. They each could feel the others anxiety and both were powerless to help ease it.

"…I'm hungry." Link said.

He grunted as Midna whacked him upside the head, making his already pounding head hurt more but it was worth it if it could help lighten the atmosphere even a smidgeon. Otherwise they would both cave in under the kingdom-wide….No, world-wide pressure looming over their heads.

With a fierce yank on the bandage wrap and a snap of her teeth she tied off the wrap and mended the final wound on his arm. Eforra stepped back and appraised her work and nodded in self-approval. Hex, now in his beast man form, was covered from the neck down in bandage wraps with a fresh blood dotting several areas.

He grunted as he tried to flex his clawed hand and sent her a glare that spoke "Really?"

"Hey, it was either this or the lavender spring. And that, dear husband, is a good days hike up the ephimer mountains. Or did you WANT to hobble up the winding mountain road?"

She felt him growl as she sat beside him on the couch and saw his resigned features. Tally one more for Eforra!

"Do you think she was able to reach him?" spoke Hex.

"It is…hard to say. I can't feel their warring energies anymore. Everything is still now. I'm certain she has indeed reached him though."

To this Hex raised an unsure brow.

"How can you be so certain?"

Eforra said nothing. Hex watched as she placed her hand over his, entwining her fingers with his and squeezing hard and smiling sweetly at him.

"Sometimes a woman just knows these things."

Hex chuckled and squeezed back, grinning.

Their moment was cut short as a violent tremor shook their home, making everything jump and clatter horribly. Book shelves were knocked over. Chandeliers quivered and smashed onto the floor. Vases were broken and things mounted to the walls trembled with the threat of falling off.

The tremors were so forceful that the ceiling above them split apart, revealing the night sky and the dangerous red hue that mingled with the usual cool blue of night. In the distance, a spiteful roar erupted and tore through the air as sharply as thunder.

From a small table beside him Hex saw the astral key sitting there….with a huge crack running through it. He grabbed it and grimly displayed it for Eforra to see, her eyes narrow and full of worry.

With a remorseful growl, Hex announced, "We…are out of time."

-End of chapter

A/N: Just as it states in my profile, I'M BACK! However…..I'm going to be blunt here. This….feels half-assed. No, I lie. It IS half assed!...At least in terms of length. It's been….too long, and DAMN IT if this stupid writers block doesn't do my mentality in, I dunno what will. A while ago, I asked what everybody thought I should do in regards to the overall story in general. And after receiving a PM from a truly dedicated reader, I decided to tough it out and finish what I started. And I WILL see this through to the end. After the input died down some I sat myself down and began mapping out my work. And though this chapter was short (my apologies btw…) it is still going the course I had originally intended for it. I won't say much in regards to the next chapter (can't give anything away too…prematurely) but I will say that this fic is drawing to its close. Not TOO quickly but its getting' there. Soooo….

As always, review, comment, troll, critique, submit deeply seeded hatred for me , yadda yadda yadda. Hopefully the input will help to keep my thought processor running! X3
