The Brethren Court had disbanded and the pirates filtered out quickly, eager to make the most of their short stay in the notorious town.
Only two remained.
Jack seemed unusually engrossed in reading the codex as Elizabeth opened and closed her mouth several times, looking for the right words. In the end it was Jack who spoke first.
"Sao made you Captain then?"
"Yes. He…he…They attacked the ship."
"Die of his own accord or did you help him make that decision?"
The words cut Elizabeth. Closing her eyes she knew she had deserved that one. Didn't mean it didn't hurt though. She looked at him through eyelashes thick with tears and saw him still, infuriatingly, looking at the codex. So she gave up and walked, no, almost ran the length of the great table and grabbed him, made him listen to her.
"What else was I meant to do Jack? We would all have died, the whole crew and all because of your selfishness! You wouldn't have stayed; you're always running away Jack! Even if I'd given you the choice it wouldn't have given us enough time!"
She was shaking him, tears running down her face but he didn't move an inch, just stared back with unfathomable eyes.
"I brought you back didn't I? I got you back but you know what? I'm still not sorry for what I did, it was the right –
He kissed her.
One moment she was screaming at him and the next they were locked in a fierce embrace, a hand in her hair and another at her waist pulling her close. Elizabeth's eyes widened temporarily in surprise yet she didn't push him away but instead kissed him back with an intense need she had never felt before.
Then his lips left hers, longing for more, and she felt hot breath on her cheek as he whispered to her, turned and strode away.
Elizabeth stood there, arms hanging by her sides with Jack's words ringing in her ears.
"I'm not sorry either."
