To Fall Off the Wagon by NariNari

Todd lay back on his bed in the dark dorm room, causing the be springs to squeak. He quickly checked to see if he'd woken his roommate but found that he could hear the steady breathing of Neil, indicating he was still asleep.

Todd couldn't sleep, however, for his mind was on tomorrow, his birthday. God, how he hated his birthday! Every year he got the same thing from his parents, and every year he took it with false appreciation. How many times can one get a desk set and still looked over joyed to receive it? He loved his parents, he really did but he just wished they'd pay a bit more attention to him.

He chuckled wryly at that thought, it was like Neil's and his parents needed to switch places. No, Neil's father was obviously unstable, not that he'd ever tell that to Neil, he'd like some attention but a dictator was not what he had in mind. Besides, Todd hated Mr. Perry, more for controlling his son as he did, and trying to live through Neil by saying it was what he mother wanted. What good son didn't want to make their mother happy?

Mr. Perry knew the answer to that, and that's why he got Neil every time. Todd just wished Neil could stand up to his father, just once. Now he was being hypocritical, here he was just musing over his own parental dilemma and now he was thinking that Neil should do exactly what he should do.

Todd sighed, it felt like he was on a wagon, a wagon filled with a bunch of other boys, all trying to break free, and be there own person. They were on a bumpy road and every once in awhile they'd hit a few pot holes and someone would go flying off, a grin plastered on their face. Todd wished he and Neil could fly off that wagon, cause such a bump in the road that everyone flew off.

It wouldn't happen though, it couldn't happen. Todd rolled over to face his sleeping roommate, only to find him awake and staring at him.

"What's wrong?"Neil whispered, "You can't sleep, why not?"

"It's nothing," Todd mumbled, "I was just thinking."

"About what?"

Todd snuggled down into his bed and looked Neil straight in the eye before whispering quite clearly, "Wagons."

"Oh?" Neil raised a brow in the dark, even though Todd couldn't see it he knew it happened, "What about wagons?"

"We're on one," Todd murmured, now feeling quite stupid for even saying it in the first place.

"Are we? Well, I hope we don't fall off," Neil chuckled quietly.

"No, we have to fly off," Todd said so quietly Neil almost didn't hear him. There was silence for a few moments before Neil spoke.

"Then we fly." Neils smile was brilliant, even in the dark, and Todd found himself thinking that tomorrow was another day, and maybe tomorrow they'd fall off the wagon.

Together.
